Engineering and installations for wind power industry System integration
As an engineering company and system integration company MEYLE offers products from a single
component up to complete system solutions for wind power industry. System solution mainly focus on
pitch control systems, metrological measurements, industrial ethernet connection of wind parks,
inverter and PLC control systems.
Wind power Components
For wind power applications MEYLE offers a wide range of sensors, switches and safety products.
Incremental and absolute encoders are one of the most important products in this field and are used in the
generator and pitch control. MEYLE offers heavy duty incremental encoders for use in generator control and
absolute multiturn encoders for pitch control applications in combination with pitch drives or blade control.
The absolute multiturn encoders use a mechanical multiturn gear to avoid any influence of electromagnetic
fields
Metrological instruments such as wind speed and wind direction sensors are available as cup versions
or ultrasonic anemometer versions from standard temperature ranges up to ice free devices for cold
climate regions.
Rotary limit switches are used in the area of yaw control (azimuth control) and pitch control. In yaw control
applications they are used to avoid twisted cables. The rotation of the nacelle is monitored and if necessary
the movement can be blocked in one direction to prevent the twisting of the hanging cables. For this reason
also the term cable twist sensor is used.
If rotary limit switches are used in the area of pitch control it is possible to have accurate monitoring of the
rotor position. This is usually achieved through the integration of a MEYLE high resolution encoder or
potentiometer.
The rotary limit switch is always connected with the gear box of the nacelle or the rotor respectively, using a
specially designed pinion gear. The pinion gears can be supplied according to customer specification, in
order to integrate the machine into the existing structure.
The switch offers many advantages as opposed to other technical solutions. The end positions are secured
through the switch contacts of cam switches. In addition to the limiting of the end position, it is possible to
determine positions exactly using the evaluation of encoder or potentiometer signals. In this way a diverse
function of great importance can be accommodated in one housing unit. The housing of the rotary limit
switch has a protection degree of IP65, which allows for it to be used under harsh conditions.
Personal safety and descending devices are used for the descending of persons from high work
locations. MEYLE offers certified complete sets consisting of a descender device, rope, hook, harness
and bag of highest quality.
Another product for wind energy are the slip ring collectors available in different models. The power
transmission is transferred from a rotating to a fixed part using the slip ring collector.
For repair purposes every nacelle in a larger wind energy facility is equipped with a service crane. This
hoisting device is controlled using a pendant control switch which we can offer from our range of crane
control components.

Configuring the datalogger, as well as the datalogger V. LT, is accomplished by means of a WINDOW S®
95/98/NT/2000/XP based P C-software. H ereby t he ch annel l ayout f or all i nput s is supp orted b y a data bas e, comp rising
data of all com mon sen sors . Conf igur ation an d connection is displayed and stored and printed out, if required.

cert ain amou nt, f or example 1 gram, of water out of the soi l; it s uni t is k Pa). D urin g equil ibrium, the matric potential between neighbouring sections of soil is equal, independent from
parti cle s ize c onfi gurat ion, humus cont ent, d ensit y etc.. The eq uiten siomet er takes advantage of this characteristic by getting a ceramic equilibrium probe with known soil moisture
char acter ist ic c urve in contac t with the soi l to be meas ured. Aft er detec tion of the probe’ s
water c ontent by means of th e TDR -principle, the matric potential is directly determined.

1.2
Initial operation
Wind can be represented by a vector quantity. For a complete
description of the wind it is necessary to specify its speed and
direction. The two components are subject to spatial and temporal variations; thus, strictly speaking, they are valid only for
the site where the measuring instrument is put up. We therefore
recommend to select the place of installation very carefully.
1.1
Because the installation takes place in a dangerous height, the assembly personal must follow
the rules for prevention of accidents.
1.2.1
Generally, wind measuring instruments should not measure
the specific wind conditions of a limited area, but indicate the
typical wind conditions of a wider area. The values measured
at different places must be comparable. Thus, when installing
the sensor you should make sure the place of installation is
not under the lee of great obstacles. The distance between the
obstacles and the sensor should be 10 times the height of the
obstacles (this corresponds to the definition of an undisturbed
terrain).
If the sensor must be installed on a roof top the place of installation must be in the middle of the roof to avoid predominant
wind directions. If you want to measure both wind direction
and wind speed, install the sensors at the same measuring
point, if possible, and make sure to avoid any mutual influence of the sensors. A wind sensor pair easily meets this
requirement since the sensors are set up side by side. Their
horizontal distance should be approximately 1.5 m. The two
sensors must be staggered vertically so that the lower edge of
the upper wind speed sensor is 0.1 to 0.5 m above the upper
edge of the lower wind direction sensor.
Mast or pipe mounting
Make sure the device is easily accessible so that you
can set up the north direction for the wind direction
sensor and perform eventual maintenance works.
For access to the sensors use a ladder of the appropriate length or a telescope working platform of
the appropriate height, if applicable.
Selecting the place of installation
If an undisturbed terrain of this kind does not exist the sensor
must be put up at a height of at least 5 m above the obstacle
height.
Installation
Ladders or other lifting helps must be absolutely in order and must be guarantee a secure
support! Follow the rules for prevention of accidents.
Masts or tubes (grounded) suitable for mounting have an
outer diameter of Ø 48-50 mm. A mast adapter (see accessories) is necessary.
Mounting of the adapter at the wind sensor:
1. Remove both thread nuts from the sensor.
2. Insert the sensor into the bore (Ø 30 mm) of the adapter.
3. Fasten the sensor with the flat side of a detached nut from
the lower side. Tighten with a suitable tool (wrench size
36), until a twisting safety of the sensor is given.
Mounting of the wind sensor at the mast:
1. Install the cable for supply of the sensor electronic and
transmission of the sensor signal inside the mast.
2. Put the sensor on the mast (tube). With regard to the wind
direction sensor the north mark on the sensor must be
aligned to the geographical north direction acc. to 2.6.4.
Afterwards fasten the locking screw in the mast adapter
to give the sensor a fixed and torsion-free fit.
Proceed analogously when mounting the sensor on a tube
traverse.
1.2.2
Mounting on traverse with bore hole
At each end of the traverse there are slotted bores with a
diameter of 30 mm.
1. Remove the lower nut from the sensor.
2. Put a sensor sidewise into the bore.
3. Fasten the sensor with the flat side of the detached nut
from the lower side. Tighten with a suitable tool (wrench
size 36), until a twisting safety of the sensor is given.

Generally mounting in bores
1.4
Material thickness for installation of the sensor between the
nuts may be max. 10 mm. Mounting is to be made in the following steps:
Electrical connection
Wind sensors X367 are connected to a data measuring
system via the open cable end. Normally the sensors have
5 m cable.
1. Remove the lower thread nut from the sensor.
2. The sensor has to be inserted into the bore and fastened
by the opposite side with the loose nut (removed as under 1.).
With regard to the wind direction sensor the north mark
on the sensor must be aligned to the geographical north
direction acc. to 1.3 before finally fastening the nut.
1.3
The connecting cable is suitably led along the mast between
the data evaluation device (indicating instrument or data
acquisition system) and the sensor. The cable must be fastened using appropriate cable ties (their length depends on
the mast diameter).
Tip: Lead the cable in a wide curve from the mast to
the bottom of the casing so that you can later easily
dismount the cable.
North alignment of wind vane
For wind direction measurements the north mark on the sensor
must be aligned to the geographical north direction.
To set up the sensor’s north orientation select a landmark
which is as far as possible up north with regard to the final
position of the wind direction sensor.
The reference point can be selected using a topographical
map (1:25000). The exact position of the reference point is
determined using an amplitude compass that can be adjusted
horizontally on a stand.
Alternatively the connection cable can be laid also completely
in the pipes of a mast if the mast is accordingly prepared.
Please make sure the cable is protected from humidity on the
side of the data processing system. Generally, Pg sockets
that use a rubber joint to prevent humidity from penetrating
into the terminal box of the data processing system provide
sufficient protection.
You have to turn the wind vane’s marking exactly over the
marking at the sensor shaft. When you have aligned the
marks, you may fix the wind vane with e.g. a piece of adhesive
tape. When you have fixed the wind vane you can locate the
reference point by aiming at it over the axis. Now you must
turn the sensor casing on the mounting tube until the tip of the
wind vane points to the reference point in the north.
This requires that the sensor is easily turnable on the mounting
part. The sensor has to be fixed in this position.

Forceful turning of the mounted sensor can damage the
instrument! After alignment the adhesive tape has to be
removed.
To reduce the risk of inductive interference the
sensor must be properly grounded (screening
on both sides).
For precise north alignment compass declina-tion
have to be considered!
Note: Follow all safety instructions while setting up
the sensor onto a mast.

Maintenance
The sensor design permits long periods of maintenance-free
operation. We therefore recommend a regular visual verification of the north setup of the wind direction sensor as well
as a sensor calibration of both sensor types in intervals of
2 years. With problems, which cannot be solved by you,

The bores at the cup rotor are so attached that the cup rotor
can only in a certain, clear position to be installed. All 3 screws
must be used and the cup rotor with it be fastened. Thus the
correct direction of rotation is guaranteed. The necessary
wrench is included in delivery.
Ladders or other lifting helps must be absolutely
in order and must be guarantee a secure support!
Follow the rules for prevention of accidents.
Mount the sensors at the top of grounded tube with an outer
diameter Ø 48-50 mm. The mast adapter (see accessories)
is obligatory.
1. Remove both thread nut from the sensor.
2. The sensor with cable-plug connection is led without cable
into the bore.
3. Attach the sensor with the flat side of detached nut from
the lower side. Tighten with a suitable tool (wrench size 36),
until a twisting safety of the sensor aligned to the north is
given.
You can also use masts that can turn around their vertical
axis or masts consisting of individual segments or telescoping masts that you can secure after setting up the north
direction.
If wind speed and wind direction are measured at the same
time, the measurement generally takes place not only at the
top of a mast but also at the ends of a cross arm. The arms
must stay torsion-free and vibration-proof even at high wind
speeds and they must be accessible for you to perform mounting and maintenance work.
When you install the connecting cables make sure
not to excessively shorten the cable leading to the
connector in the lower part of the sensor casing so
that you can later maintain or dismounting the sensor.
Put further a cable loop as sensor protection against
water under the sensor.
Tip: Install the sensors on ground to the traverse and
align you the wind vane parallel to the traverse. You
go only then upward, in order to accordingly align the
sensors with traverse under assistance of a partner
on ground.

II. Traverse with bore

At the traverse at each end are bores with a slot and with
a Ø 30 mm.
1. Remove the lower nut from the sensor.
2. Put a sensor with assembled cable sidewise into the
bore.
3. Attach the sensor with the flat side of detached nut from the
lower side. Tighten with a suitable tool (wrench size 36),
until a twisting safety of the sensor aligned to the north is
given.

Please make sure there is no magnetic deviation
of the compass.
When the north direction is set up for the wind direction sensor,

Remove any adhesive tape.
If you cannot select a northern reference point owing to local
conditions, you can proceed analogously using a reference
point in the south. In this case, however, you have to make
sure the north mark on the sensor does not point to the reference point but in the opposite direction.
Heating
The sensor disposes of an electronically controlled 18 Wheating within the sensor head.
The heating is supplied together with the sensor electronics.
(On request a separate supply of the sensor electronics and
the heating by a fixed cable is possible.)
Under most climatological conditions
the heating prevents blocking of the
moving sensor parts (see illustration). The cup rotor or the wind vane
are not heated. In case of icing or
formation of ice at the moving sensor element the function is restricted for the period of icing.
Maintenance
The sensor design permits long periods of maintenance-free
operation.
We therefore recommend a regular visual verification and
functional test of the wind sensors as well as a sensor calibration of both sensor types at intervals of 2 years.

The warranty does not cover:
Mounting of the cup rotor and the wind vane at the
sensor
The bores at the cup rotor and the wind vane are attached in
such a way that they can only be installed in a certain clear
position. All 3 screws must be used to fasten the cup rotor
resp. the wind vane. Thus the correct direction of rotation is
guaranteed. The necessary wrench is included in delivery.
1. Mechanical damages caused by external impacts (e. g.
icefall, rockfall, vandalism).
2. Impacts or damages caused by over-voltages or electromagnetic elds which are beyond the standards and
specications in the technical data.
3. Damages caused by improper handling, e. g. by wrong
tools, incorrect installation, incorrect electrical installation
(false polarity) etc.
4. Damages which are caused by using the device beyond
the specied operation conditions.

Initial operation
The wind can be represented by a vector quantity. For a
complete description of the wind it is necessary to specify
its speed and direction. The two components are subject to
spatial and temporal variations; thus, strictly speaking, they
are valid only for the site where the measuring instrument is
put up. We therefore recommend to select the place of installation very carefully.

Selecting the place of installation

Generally, wind measuring instruments should not measure
the specic wind conditions of a limited area, but indicate the
typical wind conditions of a wider area. The values measured
at different places must be comparable.
Thus, when installing the sensor you should make sure the
place of installation is not under the lee of great obstacles.
The distance between the obstacles and the sensor should
be 10 times the height of the obstacles (this corresponds to
the denition of an undisturbed terrain).

If an undisturbed terrain of this kind does not exist the sensor
must be put up at a height of at least 5 m above the obstacle
height.
If the sensor must be installed on a roof top the place of installation must be in the middle of the roof to avoid predominant
wind directions.
If you want to measure both wind direction and wind speed,
install the sensors at the same measuring point, if possible,
and make sure to avoid any mutual inuence of the sensors.
A wind sensor pair easily meets this requirement since the
sensors are set up side by side. Their horizontal distance
should be approximately 1.5 m. The two sensors must be
staggered vertically so that the lower edge of the upper wind
speed sensor is 0.1 to 0.5 m above the upper edge of the lower
wind direction sensor.

Maintenance
The sensor design permits long periods of maintenance-free
operation.
We recommend a regular visual verication and functional test
of the wind sensors as well as a sensor calibration of both
sensor types at intervals of 2 years.

Principles of installation
Setting up the North Direction
for the Wind Vane
Attention!
Because the installation take place in a dangerous height, the assembly personal must follow
the rules for prevention of accidents.
Make sure the device is easily accessible so that you
can set up the north direction for the wind direction
sensor and perform any maintenance work. To reach
the sensors use a ladder of the appropriate length
or a telescoping working platform of the appropriate
height.
Ladders or other lifting helps must be absolutely
in order and must be guarantee a secure support!
Follow the rules for prevention of accidents.
For wind direction measurements the north mark on the sensor
must be aligned with the geographical north direction.
You have to turn the marking exactly over the marking at the
sensor shaft. When you have aligned the marks, you may x
the wind vane with e.g. a piece of adhesive tape. When you
have xed the wind vane this way you can locate the reference
point by aiming at it over the axis. Now you must turn the sensor casing on the mounting tube until the tip of the wind vane
points to the reference point in the north.
To set up the sensor’s north orientation select a landmark
which is as far as possible up north with regard to the nal
position of the wind direction sensor.
The reference point can be selected using a topographical
map (1:25000). The exact position of the reference point is
determined using an amplitude compass that can be adjusted
horizontally on a stand.
I. Traverse with slotted bores
Please make sure there is no magnetic deviation
of the compass.

At the traverse at each end are bores with a slot and with
a Ø 30 mm.
1. Remove the nut from the sensor.
2. Put a sensor with assembled cable sidewise into the
bore.
3. Attach the sensor with the at side of detached nut from
the lower side. Tighten with a suitable tool (wrench size
40), until a twisting safety of the sensor aligned to the north
is given.
When the north direction is set up for the wind direction sensor,
you can mounting it as under point "Principle of installation".
Remove any adhesive tape.
If you cannot select a northern reference point owing to local
conditions, you can proceed analogously using a reference
point in the south. In this case, however, you have to make
sure the north mark on the sensor does not point to the reference point but in the opposite direction.
II. Mounting into bores
Material thickness for installation of the sensor between the
nuts may be max. 10 mm.
1. Remove the thread nut from the sensor.
2. The sensor with cable-plug connection is led without cable
into the bore and fastened by the opposite side with the
loose nut as under I.3.
When you install the connecting cables make sure
not to excessively shorten the cable leading to the
connector in the lower part of the sensor casing so
that you can later maintain or dismounting the sensor. Put further a cable loop as sensor protection
against water under the sensor.
Tip: Install the sensors on ground to the traverse
and align you the wind vane parallel to the traverse.
You go only then upward, in order to accordingly
align the sensors with traverse under assistance of
a partner on ground.

Electrical connection
Electrical connection
The sensors are connected to a data measuring system via
the open cable end (see drawing on the right side).
The connecting cable is suitably led along the mast between
the data evaluation device (indicating instrument or data
acquisition system) and the sensor. The cable must be fastened using appropriate cable ties (their length depends on
the mast diameter).
Tip: Lead the cable in a wide curve from the mast to
the bottom of the casing so that you can later easily
dismount the cable.
Please make sure the cable is protected from humidity on the
side of the data processing system. Generally, Pg sockets
that use a rubber joint to prevent humidity from penetrating
into the terminal box of the data processing system provide
sufcient protection.

Alternatively the lead can be laid also completely in the pipes
of a mast, if the mast is accordingly prepared.
To reduce the risk of inductive interference the
sensor must be properly grounded (screening
on both sides).
Heating
The sensor disposes of an electronically controlled 18 Wheating within the sensor head. The heating is supplied
together with the sensor electronics. (On request a separate
supply of the sensor electronics and the heating by a xed
cable is possible.)
Under most climatological conditions the heating prevents blocking of the moving sensor parts

Introduction
The X050.000M is a very robust, compact and extremely reliable wind sensor. The system is specially
designed for use under extremely low temperatures.
Optimized heating construction with regard to
flow
rangement of sensors next to each other easily meets
this requirement.
The X050.000M includes experience in development
and production of wind sensors of more than 140
years.
The system measures and processes the following
meteorological parameters: wind speed and wind
direction.
The sensor must not be installed onto transmitting plants or antennas or close to them. A minimum distance of 2 m is to be kept for interference-free
signal transfer.
All measuring parts and the other system components
are integrated in the sealed, water-proof housing.
2.2
Tools and installation aids
The X050.000M wind sensor is particularly designed
for use under icing climate conditions. The 125 Watts
heating allows the operation of the sensor within a
wide temperature range of -40 to +70°C even under
icing conditions.
There are no special tools or materials required for the
installation works. All work can be carried out with
standard tools available in a regular workshop.

At the input connector the sensor requires a 24 volt
nominal DC power source (20…28 VDC) for operation.

Generally mounting in bores
Material thickness for installation of the sensor between the nuts may be max. 10 mm.
Ladders or other lifting helps must be absolutely in order and must guarantee a secure support!
Follow the rules for prevention of accidents.
Mount the sensors at the top of grounded tube with an
outer diameter Ø 48-50 mm. The mast adapter (see
accessories) is obligatory.
1. Remove both thread nuts from the sensor.
2. The sensor with cable-plug connection is led without
cable into the bore.
3. Attach the sensor with the flat side of detached nut
from the lower side. Tighten with a suitable tool
(wrench size 36), until a twisting safety of the sensor aligned to the north is given.
You can also use masts that can turn around their
vertical axis or masts consisting of individual segments or telescoping masts that you can secure after
setting up the north direction.
If wind speed and wind direction are measured at the
same time, the measurement generally takes place
not only at the top of a mast but also at the end of a
cross arm. The arms must stay torsion-free and vibration-proof even at high wind speeds and must be
accessible for you to perform mounting and maintenance work.
When you install the connecting cables make
sure not to excessively shorten the cable leading to
the connector in the lower part of the sensor casing so
that you can later maintain or dismount the sensor.
Further put a cable loop as sensor protection against
water under the sensor.
1. Remove the lower thread nut from the sensor.
2. The sensor with cable-plug connection is led without
cable into the bore and fastened by the opposite
side with the loose nut as under chapter 2.6.1
point 3.
3. The loose nut is now to be touched with the flat side
first over the cable in order to fasten the sensor as
under chapter 2.6.1 point 3.
2.6.4
North alignment of wind vane
For wind direction measurements the north mark on
the sensor must be aligned with the geographical
north direction.
You have to turn the marking exactly over the marking
at the sensor shaft. When you have aligned the
marks, you may fix the wind vane with e.g. a piece of
adhesive tape. After alignment the adhesive tape has
to be removed. When you have fixed the wind vane
you can locate the reference point by aiming at it over
the axis. Now you must turn the sensor casing on the
mounting tube until the tip of the wind vane points to
the reference point in the north.
To set up the sensor’s north orientation select a landmark which is as far as possible up north with regard
to the final position of the wind direction sensor.
The reference point can be selected using a topographical map (1:25000). The exact position of the
reference point is determined using an amplitude
compass that can be adjusted horizontally on a stand.
Compass declination has to be considered!
Tip: Install the sensors on ground to the traverse and align the wind vane parallel to the traverse.
Only then go upward in order to accordingly align the
sensors with traverse under assistance of a partner on
ground.
When the north direction is set up for the wind direction sensor, you can mount it like under point "Installation variants".
A functional check at three rotated 90° directions is
recommended.

Power and signal connection

The
X050.000M sensors dispose of separate connections for the heating supply and for the supply and
signal transmission of the sensor.
2.6.5.1
Connection of sensor electronic
Sensors X050.000M are connected to a data measuring system via the open cable end (see next page).
The connecting cable is suitably led along the mast
between the data evaluation device (indicating instrument or data acquisition system) and the sensor. The
cable must be fastened using appropriate cable ties
(their length depends on the mast diameter).
2.6.5.2
Connection of heating
The supply of the sensor heating is connected via an
extra cable which is lead out on the sensor side.
The cable routing should be arranged in accordance
with the installation site. Make sure that the cable is
secured by suitable cable binders.
For further details about the electrical connection of
the sensor please see paragraph „Dimensional drawings and electrical connections“.
As the sensor is often mounted at considerable heights, the appropiate safety instructions need
to be observed in the course of mounting.. During
electrical installation works the respective AC/DC
must be switched off.
The housing must not be opened by unauthorized
personnel!

Maintenance

Transports
In case it is necessary to ship or to transport the sensor, the same must be carefully packed to prevent
eventual transport damages.
Tip: Lead the cable in a wide curve from the
mast to the bottom of the casing so that you can later
easily dismount the cable. Please make sure the cable
is protected from humidity on the side of the data
processing system. Generally, cable sockets that use
a rubber joint to prevent humidity from penetrating into
the terminal box of the data processing system provide sufficient protection.

Static Weather Sensor (X3865)
1.1
Advantages of the sensor:
Introduction
The sensors of the X3865 family are very robust, compact
and extremely reliable. When developing these sensors
particular consideration has been given to highest quality for
fulfillment of meteorological requirements.
The system acquires the horizontal air flow and processes
the measuring data to the meteorological parameters wind
speed and wind direction. Furthermore the weather-module of
the X3865sensor acquires the meteorological parameters air
temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure. Based
on the measured data the sensor calculates the dew point
temperature and provides for its serial output along with the
measuring data.
The X3865 sensor disposes of a pulse input for connecting
different MEYLE precipitation sensors optional.
The sensors and further system components are mounted in
a splash water- and dust proof metal housing.
The measuring data are automatically transmitted via serial interface RS 422 in talker mode, when power supply is
switched on.
Due to its shock- and vibration proof construction the sensor
X3865 is particularly qualified for use under severe environmental conditions. The housing is made outof anodised seawater resistant aluminium.
An electronically controlled heating device enables the sensor
to operate in between the wide range of -40 up to 70 °C.
1.2
Advantages of the static measuring principle
The sensor X3865 is a modern system to carry out precise
and reliable measurements under even hardest application and
environmental conditions. The wind measurements take place
according to the principle „TAV“ (thermal aura field variation),
i. e. static, without moving parts.
Static measuring principle for wind measurements means:
•
Determination of data works without moving measuring
elements, i.e. none abrasion, least maintenance and none
recalibration because of this method.
•
The wind parameter can be measured also in winter time
accurate and precise, because of the electronic controlled
heating for the immovable measuring elements. This
heating is particularly effective against ice and snow in all
climatic zones.
•
•
Lightweight mass and immovable measuring elements to
enable very low starting values, distance- and attenuation
constants as well as a very high repetition accuracy.

measuring principle minor changes from the angle of pitch

compact housing also contains built-in sensors for air
temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure.

enclosure, can perform cyclic self-testing and notify the
user of erroneous data or failure.

The compact design of this sensor with 5 meteorological
parameters is eliminating the traditional cabling and installation work significantly. Distribution boxes, power supply
units and other accessories can be reduced to a minimum
expense.

Setting to work
Wind can be represented by a vector quantity. For a complete
description of the wind it is necessary to specify its speed
and direction. The two components are subject to spatial and
temporal variations; thus, strictly speaking, they are valid only
for the site where the measuring instrument is installed. We
therefore recommend selecting the place of installation very
carefully.
2.1
Installation conditions
2.1.1
Generally
For professional wind measurements location and height of
the wind sensor are important for accurate, correct results and
representative wind conditions. Ideally, the sensor should be
installed in 10 m above the ground on a mast. This may be
buildings, trees, tall towers, lifting cranes, moving vehicles,
aircrafts, helicopters and other obstructions. In case of mobile
measurements at vehicles often above mentioned conditions
are not practicable. Then you have to find compromises.
Generally, wind measuring instruments should not measure
the specific wind conditions of a limited area, but indicate the
typical wind conditions of a wider area. The values measured
at different places must be comparable. Thus, when installing
the sensor you should make sure the place of installation is
not under the lee of great obstacles. The distance between
the obstacles and the sensor should be 10 times the height
of the obstacles (this corresponds to the definition of an undisturbed terrain).
If an undisturbed terrain of this kind does not exist the sensor
must be put up at a height of at least 6 m above the obstacle
height.
If the sensor must be installed on a roof top the place of installation must be in the middle of the roof to avoid predominant
wind directions. If you want to measure both wind direction
and wind speed, the sensors should be avoided. The sensor
X3865 easily meets this requirement.
The sensor must not be installed onto transmitting
plants or antennas or close to them. A minimum
distance of 2 m is to be kept for interference-free
signal transfer.

The installation of the sensor involves 3 steps:
(1) Mounting the cable at the sensor and if necessary
draw the cable through the mast.
Unpacking the sensor
The sensor is packed in a separate box, carefully protected
against mechanical influences during transport.
(2) Mounting the sensor at the mast, but before
tightening the screws you must align the sensor to
the north.
Please verify that the following parts and documents are
enclosed:
(3) Attaching the cable to the power supply and the
signal acquisition system.

Please thoroughly check the delivery with regard to completeness and eventual transport damages. In case of eventual
claims please contact us in writing immediately.

Power supply
The sensor requires at the input connector a 24 volt nominal
DC power source for operation. The sensor-heating has to
be supplied with 24 volt DC and has a power consumption of
70 W (max. 3 A).
2.7
Mounting
The sensor can be installed on a standard pipe with an outer
diameter of 50 mm and an inner diameter of maximum 40 mm.
Before tightening the two 8 mm-socket screws and attaching
the sensor you have to draw the cable through the pipe and
align the sensor into driving direction.
For this purpose the housing is marked accordingly (see drawing). Before the screws of the sensor are tightened, the sensor
is adjusted to north. Please pay attention to a firm mounting
of the sensor at the mast!
In addition the sensor has a pin for the north direction. You can
put this pin into the nick at the mast (if available). If needed
you can turn in or unscrew the pin by means of allen key.
2.7.1
North alignment of wind sensor
For wind direction measurements the north mark on the sensor must be aligned with the geographical north direction.
To adjust the wind sensor in a firm and correct manner into
the north direction this item is equipped with an integrated
mounting aid. Inside the inner bottom of the sensor a small
bolt pointing to the north is integrated to be set into a corresponding slot of the mounting pipe (if available). Thus the
sensor is safely attached. If needed you can turn in or unscrew
the pin by means of allen key.
To set up the sensor’s north orientation select a landmark
which is as far as possible up north with regard to the final
position of the wind direction sensor.
The reference point can be selected using a topographical
map (1:25000). The exact position of the reference point is
determined using an amplitude compass that can be adjusted
horizontally on a stand.
Compass declination has to be considered!

To align the sensor ahead (on ships) locate a point outside
the ship in the landscape which is located in the ship ahead
direction respectively in the centre line or in case of the sensor is mounted far away from the middle line a line parallel to
the centre line.
2.7.3
Because the wind sensor often is mounted on exposed locations in dangerous heights the installation
personnel has to pay attention to the relevant safety
regulations for such works. During the electrical
installation and termination works the external circuitbreaker must be switched off.
Once the sensor is adjusted, it can be fixed with the two hexagonal screws. Finally the earth screw has to be connected to
the ship’s ground. Acid-free contact grease is recommended
to protect contact surfaces against corrosion.
Note: Follow all safety instructions while setting up
the sensor onto a mast.
2.7.2
Power and signal connection
The X3865 sensor requires a 12-pole CONINVERS plug connector of the series designation „TC“ (Ordering No.: TC-12
S1N128055). The cable shield should be connected with
both ends at the ground wire (PE).
It is not permitted to open those housings by unauthorized persons!

Maintenance
3.1
Regular maintenance and calibration
The sensor X3865 is service reduced and designed for a very
long lifetime. Recommended a regular visual check regarding
dirt of surface caused by the weather and if so, to clean up.
To reduce the risk of inductive interference the sensor must be properly grounded (screening on both
sides).
If reference measurements should be necessary
stringently must be noted that a comparability of the
measured values is given only if the measurements
take place under same conditions. I.e. the reference
equipment must be used very closed to the sensor!
The external connection is via central connector which is
located in housing base. For further details about electrical
connection please see chapter „Connecting diagrams“.
The sensor is a measuring instrument and thus apply user
specific standards regarding period of recalibration.
If the sensor is mounted in correct manner and connected
with the right cable (accessory), you can attach the wires to
power supply and signal outputs to data acquisition equipment
(computer).
The typical power supply requirements of the X3865 static
sensor are 24 Volts with a maximum current drain of 2.5 A.
The input range is 20...28VDC. The heateing of the X3865 is to
be supplied with 24 VDC and has a heating power of 70 W
(max. 3 A).
The serial digital output of the sensor uses differential line
drivers with high common mode noise rejection. The signal levels and timings conform to the requirements of EIA/
RS-422 / Talker. The line drivers are capable of transmitting
data over cable lengths up to 1,220 meters (4,000 feet). This
maximum distance will vary depending upon the ope-rational
environment, the wire gauge used, and the baud- rate of the
attached devices.
When the power supply of the sensor is switched on, after
30 seconds (in order to reach operating temperature) the
sensor cyclically starts sending data protocols.

3.2
Visual check and cleaning
The use of the sensor under the respective environmental
conditions requires certain steps. It is thus recommendable
to clean the outside of the housing and shelter within specific
intervals. The intervals are dependant on the environmental
conditions and the degree of soiling. We recommend a regular
sight and functional check.

Each impulse increases the value by 0.1. If the value 10 is
exceeded, the value is reset to 0.1. The momentary amount
of precipitation is always the difference of predecessor value
and current value. This is valid for sensors with a 2 cm3-tipping
bucket. With sensors with a 4 cm3-tipping bucket the instantaneous value is to be multiplied by 2.
