Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
Description
The AKG Model C 414 B/ULS is certainly the most
ubiquitous studio condenser microphone in the United States,
and very likely in the rest of the world as well. It is designed
around dual back-to-back large 1 in. (25 mm) gold sputtered
diaphragms for multiple pickup patterns. The microphone's
pickup patterns are easily switchable among omnidirectional,
cardioid, hypercardioid, and figure-eight. Additional flexibility
in the studio operating environment allows a bass cut of
12 dB/octave below 150 or 75 Hz and pre-preamp attenuation
of either 10 or 20 dB. The self noise of the microphone is a
low 14 dB (A weighted). On-axis sensitivity for all patterns is
12.5 mV/Pa, and for unpadded operation maximum program
level is 140 dB for 0.5% total harmonic distortion.
The C 414 B/ULS is one of the most accurate multi-pattern
microphones available to the engineer. The far-field on-axis
response for all four switchable patterns is remarkably flat,
varying no more than +/-2 dB over the range from 20 to 20 kHz.

Architects and Engineers Specifications
The microphone shall provide at least four switchable pickup
patterns that are nominally omnidirectional, cardioid, hypercardioid,
and figure-eight. The microphone shall have maximum sensitivity
along its radius, and that sensitivity shall be no less than 12.5
mV/Pa for all patterns. The microphone shall provide a switchable
12 dB/octave roll-off at frequencies of 75 and 150 Hz. Pre-preamp
attenuation switches of -10 and -20 dB shall also be provided, and
the self noise floor of the microphone in its unpadded operation
shall be no greater than 14 dB (A weighted). The unpadded
microphone shall operate in a wide-band sound field of 140 dBSPL with no more than 0.5 % total harmonic distortion. The
microphone case shall fit within a rectangular envelope no larger
than 141 x 45 x 35 mm. The microphone shall be the AKG
Acoustics Model C 414 B/ULS.

MicroMic II Condenser Lavalier Microphones
Description
The AKG Model C 417 is an extremely smooth
omnidirectional microphone intended to be worn by speakers
who demand highest audio quality and complete freedom of
movement. It is one of the smallest lavalier microphones
available today and is available in both black and beige
versions for ultimate concealing. Frequency response
extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a 4 dB rise at 8 kHz for
enhanced intelligibility.
The C 417 can handle sound pressure levels of 126 dB
with only 3% THD and operates with phantom powering over
a range from 9 to 52 Vdc. The C417 has a 10 ft. (3-meter)
cable that is terminated in an XLR-M connector for phantom
powering. The C 417/L has a 5 ft. (1.5-meter) cable
terminated in a mini-XLR-F connector for use with the B 29 L
battery power supply/mixer, MPAIII phantom power adapter,
or with PT 40, -61, -80, -81 wireless transmitters.

Architects and Engineers Specifications
The microphone shall be an omnidirectional condenser type,
no larger in diameter than 0.3 in. (7.5 mm) diameter and
0.5 in. (15 mm) length. Finish shall be available in matte black
(beige). On-axis frequency response shall be maintained within the
range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, -8, +2 dB, as measured at
1 meter. Microphone sensitivity shall be at least 10 mV/Pa.
The microphone shall operate in a sound field of 118 dB with no
greater than 1% THD. The microphone shall operate on phantom
powering, covering the nominal limits of 9 to 52 volts. The
microphone shall have provision for personal power supply
mounting, lapel mounting, and a windscreen. The microphone shall
be the AKG Acoustics Model C 417, C 417/B or C 417/L.

APPLICATIONS
The Opus 51 is suitable for studio and stage applications
such as miking instruments and is particular benefit when
used upright or for grand pianos where the microphone
can be placed internally. The Opus 51 can also be used
within a round-table discussions system as well as stage and
film applications for ambience recording.
The microphone element is integrated into a solid metal
plate with a heavy-duty protective surface resisting accidental
damage from kicks or footsteps.
The half-spherical polar pattern of the Opus 51 has a very
wide and even pickup angle and is suitable for miking large
sound sources simplifying the choice of microphone as it is
not dependent on the distance to the sound source.
A power supply is required to power the microphone that
can also be used as an adapter to connect the microphone
to any other phantom power source.

DPA 4006 is one of the most popular types in

In striving to achieve an even cleaner sound,
the 4006-TL is equipped with a state-of-the-art
transformerless preamplifier and is powered
via a standard 48 V Phantom Power supply.
This design increases the sensitivity and
provides an extended low-frequency handling
capability (15 Hz to 20 kHz ±2 dB). All
components in this construction are very
carefully selected to fulfil the demand for optimal neutrality, accuracy and extremely low distortion
even at very high sound pressure levels and at complex passages in the music.
The applications of 4006-TL are numerous: AB stereo pair for symphonic concert hall recordings,
close mic on instruments such as grand piano, guitar, double bass, percussion and speech/
vocals, just to mention a few examples where a 4006-TL will give more detail and more open
resolution.
With the acoustic modification accessories it is possible to gain 7 different frequency responses
and directional characteristics with just one 4006-TL. You simply change a grid or mount an
element over the capsule and it will influence the sound field acoustically without any phase shift,
noise or distortion, that any electrical filter will introduce.
4006-TL is a product for sound engineers with demands for high quality. The precise
reproduction, total transparency and natural-sounding clarity of this microphone will provide you

If you are already a DPA 4011 devotee, you will discover an exciting
alternative in our wide cardioid microphones. The phantom powered
DPA 4015A wide cardioid differs in its polar pattern and is the perfect
fill-in between an omni and a more directional microphone. Sometimes a
conventional cardioid pattern just isn’t quite open enough, such as when
recording instruments with complex radiation patterns. In those

Recording orchestras or other ensembles sometimes requires a
compromise between blending in the room reverberation and a more
precise localization. The wide cardioid (also known as hemispheric)
design covers a greater sound angle and is an excellent choice for grand
piano, guitar, marimba, and percussion, or as a spot mic for groups in a
symphony orchestra. Likewise, it is an excellent speech, dubbing, or

Pressure Microphone) technology, which mounts interference tubes on
the L/C/R omni capsules, and the use of acoustic baffles that further
preserve the accuracy of levels between the discreet analog output
channels.
The 5100’s three front microphones are time coincident to eliminate
comb filtering and ensure paramount frequency consistency when
downmixing to stereo or mono. In contrast, the rear microphones, which
feature standard omnidirectional patterns, are optimally spaced from
both each other and the front array to simulate the most natural time
arrival differences. The LFE (.1) channel is comprised from a L/R sum,
which is then attenuated 10 dB in comparison with the signal from the
main
channels,
in
accordance
with
the
5.1
format.
The end result of DPA’s innovative design approach is a surround
atmosphere that is rich, smooth and fully enveloping, great in its
coherence,
channel
separation
and
localization
accuracy.
The 5.1 output of the 5100 runs through a multi-pin Lemo connector
carrying all six channels electronically balanced, while an enclosed
five-meter (16 ft), six-pair Mogami cable breaks out to six Neutrik XLR-M
connectors.

The DPA 5100 is an exciting new mobile surround microphone whose
compact size and ease of use come at no sacrifice to its stunning sound
quality. It can be regarded as a surround ambience adder, ideal for
bringing truly engaging surround ambience to sport events,
documentaries and other ambience applications for especially HDTV
production. No external signal processing is required. The versatile 5100
can be mounted on a camera or microphone stand, suspended, or

The Gefell UMT70S is a multi-pattern FET microphone that features the
legendary M7 dual-membrane, gold evaporated capsule with a new, stateof-the-art low-noise capsule amplifier for exceptional transient response,
wide bandwidth and a natural uncolored sound. The ultra-slim design
benefits the UMT70S with less acoustic field disruption around the
microphone and greater placement ease when lose mic’ing instruments.

Development
Early on, Gefell combined metal-film diaphragms with FET pre-amps as a
means to reduce microphone self-noise, expand dynamic handling, and
take advantage of the convenience of 48V phantom powering.
Gefell first appeared in America in 1992 after Germany’s Reunification with
the launch of the original M70 Perestroika microphone. This Eastern-Block
‘secret’ was quickly heralded as an incredible bargain with literally
thousands being sold around the world. Almost overnight, the UMT70
became an industry favorite for voice and instruments, and was
immediately honored with a prestigeous 1992 Tec Award nomination.
With the shift to 24bit/96kHz recording a new microphone was developed
that could properly address the demands for lower noise, wider bandwidth
and the need for greater sound pressure handling. The Gefell UMT70S is
the latest version of this ‘classic’ featuring the same highly acclaimed M7
large diaphragm with an improved preamplifier section.
Design Features
The Gefell UMT70S features a stylized slim-body design with a flared head
that houses the capsule and the ‘super-cool’ pattern selector switch. This
diminutive design reduces sound pressure build-up and subsequent
‘vortex’ around the mic while making placement easy when close mic’ing
instruments.
Inside, mounted on Gefell’s unique triangulated pedestal is the legendary
M7 capsule. The Gefell M7 is a pressure gradient transducer, renown for
its warm and natural tone. It features a dual 1-inch (25mm), 24-karat
gold evaporated membrane design with a PVC substrate. The M7 is
considered by many to be the finest capsule ever made. The triangulated
capsule pedestal deflects unwanted body reflections away from the
microphone, reducing phase cancellation and comb-filtering. This of course
benefits with greater source detail, improved upper-harmonic reach, and a
more articulated rendering.
With the advent of digital recording and digital broadcast, the demand for
improved performance set the path to upgrade the UMT70S circuitry. The
introduction of a new transformerless preamplifier with a symmetrical
output stage benefits the microphone with a significant reduction in selfnoise, a broader and more uniform frequency response, and an explosive
transient response that is capable of 149dB.
The UMT70S features a precision-machined pattern selector switch below
the capsule grill that is rotated to select between the omnidirectional,
cardioid and figure-8 polar curves. Mid-way down the body stem are
controls for the 10dB pre-attenuation pad and the smooth low-frequency
roll off (-10dB@90Hz).
Using the UMT70S
As a large diaphragm microphone, the Gefell UMT70S produces a warm
full-bodied sound that is both natural and uncolored. With exceptionally
good on and off-axis response, the side-address UMT70S is equally at
home in the studio or in a live recording environment.
In the omnidirectional mode, a ruler-flat bottom end is combined with a
slight 2dB rise in the 10kHz region making the UMT70S ideal for ambient
recording and orchestral works. In the cardioid and figure 8 modes, the
UMT70S is voiced with a smooth presence rise in the 7kHz region. This
response, coupled with a slight low-frequency roll-off gives the UMT70S its
legendary "shimmer" making it a great choice for voice-over, solo vocal
and instrument. When close mic’ing, activating the low-frequency roll off
gently curbs unwanted rumble and tightens bass by controlling proximity
build-up further adding to the UMT70S’ flexibility.
To reduce noise caused from vibration, the EA21 elastic suspension is
recommended. The ‘clamp-style’ microphone retainer inside the elastically
suspended basket provides a safeguard against damage allowing the mic
to be used at all angles. Hook-up is simple with a standard 3-pin XLR cable
and 48V phantom powering.
Interpretation
By combining the famous M7 capsule with an improved low-noise power
supply, Gefell has once again set a new level of performance in a full
bandwidth studio microphone.
The combination of three well behaved patterns, greater sensitivity,
exceptional signal-to-noise, above average transient response and a wide,
noise free bandwidth housed in a compact body make the Gefell UMT70S a
true ‘desert island’ microphone.
The accurate and colorless sound of the UMT70S opens the door to greater
creativity and freedom, making it a superb choice for recording and
particularly well suited for instrumental and vocal soloists in radio and

he TLM 103 is the ideal large diaphragm microphone
for all professional and semi-professional applications
requiring the utmost in sound quality on a limited budget.
By utilizing the tried and true transformerless circuit found
in numerous Neumann microphones, the TLM 103 features
yet unattained low self-noise and the highest sound pressure level transmission. The capsule, derived from that used
in the U 87, has a cardioid pattern, is acoustically wellbalanced and provides extraordinary attenuation of signals
from the rear.
The TLM 103 is available in satin nickel and matte black.
Delivery includes an SG 1 metal swivel mount and a wooden
jeweler’s box.
Applications
Due to the universal cardioid pattern, straightforward handling, extremely low self-noise level, and finally, the price,
the TLM 103 is predestined for all demanding applications
from home recording to professional broadcasting and
commercial recording studios.
The TLM 103 is equipped with a large diaphragm capsule
with cardioid pattern. By focusing on this pattern – used in
most recording situations – the attenuation of unwanted rear
sound has been optimized.
Off-axis sounds are rendered naturally while isolation is
increased. This also leads to a high feedback suppression
when the microphone is used in live situations or where loudspeaker playback is a factor.
Acoustic features
The TLM 103 is addressed from the front, marked with the
red Neumann logo on the microphone body.
The K 103 large diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87,
well known from the U 67 / U 87 microphones.

TLM 103
Large Diaphragm
Microphone
The capsule has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz,
and above that, a wide flat 4 dB presence boost.
The large wire mesh headgrille protects the capsule from
plosive sounds and effectively prevents pop noises.
These characteristics are achieved without resorting to
corrective resonance effects. Therefore, the microphone
maintains an excellent impulse response and reproduces
the finest details of music and speech without coloration.
Electrical features
With just 7 dB-A / 17.5 dB CCIR the self-noise
level of the TLM 103 is so reduced that even the
smallest signals
are reproduced
basically noisefree. As it is capable of handling
sound pressure levels up to 138 dB
without distortion, the
TLM 103 provides a dynamic range of 131 dB,
according to DIN/IEC 651.
The letters TLM stand for
“transformerless microphone”.
With TLM technology the usual
output transformer is replaced by
an electronic circuit.
As with traditional transformers, it
ensures good common mode rejection,
and prevents RF interference that may
influence the balanced audio signal.
Operational safety
The entire internal construction is elastically mounted to attenuate any structure borne noise that could interfere
with the TLM 103’s operation. Furthermore the capsule is set on an elastic
mount.
The frequency range reaches below
20 Hz and ths even very low bass signals are reproduced without coloration.
Due to this low frequency extension, the
TLM 103 is more sensitive to structure
borne interference and wind noise. For such cases, the elastic suspension EA 1 and the windscreen WS 87 are available as accessories. For close vocal use, the PS 10 or PS 20
pop screens are recommended.

Neumann U89i
The U 89 is a studio microphone for universal applications. The headgrille protects a dual-diaphragm
capsule. A rotary switch below the headgrille selects from five different polar patterns. Therefore the
microphone can be adapted easily to large sound sources, and those that are spread wide apart, or to sound
sources to be recorded at a greater distance.
The amplifier accepts sound pressure levels up to 134 dB without distortion. This figure can be increased to
140 dB. An additional rotary switch activates a filter that changes the low frequency response either below
80 Hz or 160 Hz frequency.
Applications
The U 89 i is similar in appearance to the U 87. It is of smaller size, and lighter weight. It features five instead
of three directional characteristics and a higher maximum sound pressure level which make this microphone
easier adaptable to different applications.
Polar patterns
In addition to the usual directional polar patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure-8, we have added
a hypercardioid and wide-angle cardioid characteristic. When compared to the standard cardioid pattern,
the hypercardioid characteristic suppresses sound from the side more efficiently. The wide-angle polar
pattern is especially useful to record large sound sources.
Acoustic features

has a very smooth frequency response for all polar patterns over a wide acceptance angle. The frequency
response curves are flat up to 10 kHz within a pickup angle of ± 100°. As a result the U 89 i has a very even
diffuse-field response for all polar patterns. This is important in a reverberant environment when more
reflections arrive at the microphone capsule. The acoustic information is not affected in its tonal quality when
recorded by the microphone. This characteristic is achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects.

rotary switch is in the ON position. A low frequency roll-off at 80 Hz or 160 Hz can be activated with another
rotary switch below the headgrille. This filter suppresses low frequency interference, yet maintains an even
frequency response for close-up sound sources, for example, when proximity effect could adversely affect
the program material. A steep high-pass filter in the LIN position prevents the output transformer of
the microphone from being overloaded due to undesired subsonic frequencies.
Operational safety
All exposed surfaces of the microphone capsule, including the diaphragms, are at ground potential.
This technology makes them highly immune to electrical and atmospheric interference and contamination
through microscopic dust particles.

MODEL BETA 52®A APPLICATIONS AND PLACEMENT The most common BETA 52A applications and placement tech-­
niques are listed in the following table. Keep in mind that micro-­
phone technique is largely a matter of personal taste– there is no one “correct” microphone position.

SUPERCARDIOID DYNAMIC INSTRUMENT MICROPHONE GENERAL The Shure BETA 52®A is a high output dynamic microphone with a tailored frequency response designed specifically for kick drums and other bass instruments. It provides superb attack and “punch,” and delivers studio quality sound even at extremely high sound pressure levels. The BETA 52A features a modified supercardioid pattern through-­
out its frequency range to insure high gain before feedback and excellent rejection of unwanted sound. A built–in dynamic locking stand adapter with an integral XLR connector simplifies installa-­
tion, particularly if the microphone is to be placed inside a kick drum. The stand adapter keeps the microphone position fixed and resists slipping, even when subjected to sharp blows and strong vibrations. MOUNTING THE BETA 52A ON A MICROPHONE STAND The built–in stand adapter features a dynamic locking system that permits adjustments to the microphone’s position, but resists slipping when struck or bumped. To mount the BETA 52A on a stand and adjust its position, proceed as follows: 4. If necessary, make minor adjustments to the microphone position without loosening the adjustment knob. 5. UNIDIRECTIONAL DYNAMIC MICROPHONE
OVERVIEW
The Shure SM58® is a unidirectional (cardioid) dynamic vocal
microphone designed for professonal vocal use in sound reinforcement and studio recording. A highly effective, built-in,
spherical filter minimizes wind and breath “pop” noise. A cardioid
pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing
unwanted background noise. The SM58 has a tailored vocal re-
sponse for a sound which is a world standard. Rugged construction, a proven shock mount system, and a steel mesh grille ensure that even with rough handling, the SM58 will perform consistently. Outdoors or indoors, singing or speech—the SM58 is
the overwhelming choice of professionals worldwide.
