Admonishments

Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments — in the form of Dangers,

Warnings, and Cautions — must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence.

Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal

injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal

injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor

personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

General Safety Precautions

Warning: Wet conditions increase the potential for receiving an electrical shock when

installing or using electrically-powered equipment. To prevent electrical shock, never install or use electrical equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm.

Caution: Fiber optic cables may be damaged if bent or curved to a radius that is less than the

recommended minimum bend radius. Always observe the recommended bend radius limit when installing fiber optic cables and patch cords.

Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look

into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end.

Warning: Contact with underground cables or pipes, especially electric power cables and gas

service lines, could interrupt local utility service and cause serious personal injury and extensive property damage. Before digging, check with all local utilities for the presence of buried cables or pipes.

1 GENERAL INFORMATION

The Universal Drop Cable is a 3mm reduced bends radius cable sheathed in an OSP cable. The cable is terminated with a hardened OptiTap connector on one end and a SC/APC connector on the exposed 3mm cable end. The exposed 3mm cable and SC/APC connector is protected with a pulling sock, which can be used to assist when installing the drop cable in a conduit or duct.

Where the drop cable transitions from an OSP environment to an inside environment, the outer sheath may be removed to allowing the 3mm drop to be routed to the ONT. Minimum bend radius should be observed when installing drop cables. 3mm drop cable minimum bend radius is 7.5mm.

Universal Drop Cables may be installed in an aerial, direct buried, or conduit buried applications. Inside, with the OSP cable stripped away, the drop can be installed as a standard indoor drop cable. The Universal Drop Cable can also be configured with a toneable copper tracer, which allows for locating in a buried application. The drop cable is installed with minimal slack at the MST (terminal), with excess slack stored at the customer premise.

The Universal Drop cross section, shown in Figure 1 shows the cable construction. The toneable copper tracer element allows cable to be located in subsurface applications.

2 BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION

This section provides general installation considerations, lists the tools and materials required for drop cable installation, and provides unpacking and inspection procedures.

2.1

Installation Overview

Drop cable installation involves the following main tasks:

• The drop cable must be installed between the subscriber and the MST. Follow local practice for pulling and installing drop cables. Refer to the instructions provided with the mounting system for drop cable entry and routing.

• Remove pulling sock.

• Strip OSP cable sheath. Cable sheath should be removed from the location where the cable enters the inside of the building to the termination point (SC/APC connector).

• Service is enabled by connecting the drop cable connectors to the subscriber distribution ports on the MST enclosure. Refer to Section 5 for instructions.

2.2

Tools and Materials Required for Installation

The following basic tools, auxiliary equipment, and materials are required for Universal Drop

Cable installation:

• Vertical roller reel (if drop cable is mounted on a cable spool)

• 216B key tool (used to open optical port dust cap on MST terminal)

• Hardened connector / adapter cleaning kit

• Connector cleaning kit

• Utility knife or snips

• Flat cable stripping tool i.e. FOD-2000 Speed Slitter (for removal of outer sheath of cable)

2.3

Unpacking and Inspection

This section provides instructions for opening the shipping boxes, verifying that all parts have been received, and verifying that no shipping damage has occurred.

Page 4

ADCP-90-454 • Issue 1 • 3/2010

Use the following procedure to unpack and inspect the cables and all accessories:

1. Open the shipping carton(s) and carefully inspect the cables and the connector.

2. If there are damages, contact ADC (see Section 9 ) for an RMA (Return Material

Authorization) and to reorder if replacement is required.

3 GENERAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION

This section provides general installation information for all Universal Drop Cable Assemblies.

Depending on the length of the cable the cable may be coiled up and placed in box or it may be coiled on a spool.

3.1

Cable Handling Recommendations

Cable Bend Radius Limits: Take care to observe the recommended minimum bend radius limits for the distribution cable. Always maintain a minimum bend radius of 7.5mm.

Pulling the Cable: When pulling the cable, do not exceed a pulling force of 25 pounds.

Caution: Do not pull the 3mm drop cable through conduit without the pulling sock in place by using the attached SC/APC connector as the pulling cable. Internal damage to cable may result.

Coiled Cable Handling: If the drop cable assembly is placed in a box with other cable’s, carefully remove the packaging material to expose the cable coil. Do not cut cable ties and carefully remove coiled cable assemblies.

Spooled Cable Handling: If the drop cable assembly is coiled on a spool, remove spool from the box. Place spool of cable on a vertical roller reel.

Caution: The Universal Drop Cable assembly is like a coiled spring when secured with cable

ties and placed in the shipping box. Be prepared for the cable to unwind with sufficient force to become tangled when the cable ties are cut.

Caution: Use caution when cutting cable ties, do not cut drop cable.

4 INSTALLATION

Universal drop cables are installed the same as standard flat OSP drop cables in aerial and direct buried applications always follow local practices and guidelines. For aerial applications P-clamps or other approved hardware should be used to secure the drop to the pole and / or wall.

Caution: Improper handling can damage fiber optic cables. Do not bend fiber optic cable more

sharply than the minimum recommended bend radius specified by the cable manufacturer. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable than specified. Do not compress the fiber or allow it to kink.

4.1

Pull Universal Drop Cable

When pulling the Universal Drop Cable through a conduit, the drop is pulled from the MST

(terminal) towards the ONT at the living unit. The protective pulling sock at the SC/APC end of the drop is designed with a “loop” which can be used as a tie point for a pull string or “mule tape” which can then be used to pull the drop through the conduit (Do not exceed 25Lbs. of pulling force). Care should be taking to prevent damage by excessive bending, kinking, etc. to the fiber during installation. When cable is installed, minimal slack should be stored at the MST

(terminal), with the slack being stored at the ONT. Always follow local practices and safety measures when pulling cable.

4.2

Grounding Cable

Drop cables equipped with metallic strength members and metal sheath should be grounded. If cable is equipped with a toneable wire it should also be grounded.

The metallic strength members, metal sheath, and toneable wire must be connected to a grounding system (not provided). Install a grounding system that meets all local electrical codes. Check local codes for grounding system installation, use of clamps, wire size, and any other grounding requirements. Typically, #6 AWG stranded copper wire is used for the grounding wire. Leave sufficient slack in the grounding wire to allow it to be routed to the MST following installation and mounting.

5 USING ADC HARDENED CONNECTORS AND ADAPTERS

ADC hardened connectors and adapters provide sealed environmental protection for the subscriber drop cable connector and the SC adapter mounted within the MST optical port. The following sections provide a description of the connector and adapter components and provide instructions for connecting or disconnecting the drop cable to/from the optical ports.

5.1

Connector Components

The basic components of the drop cable connector are shown in Figure 2 . The dust cap threads onto the connector coupling nut. A pair of O-rings on the connector body provide a tight seal when the dust cap is in place. A pulling eye is provided in the end of the dust cap for pulling the drop cable through conduit.

Connecting Drop Cable to MST Optical Port

Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look

into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end.

Use the following procedure to connect a drop cable to an optical port on the MST enclosure:

1. Unscrew the dust cap from the drop cable connector (see Figure 2 ).

2. Inspect the drop cable connector O-rings for dryness and apply O-ring lubricant (MST-

ACC-LUBE1) to each O-ring if dry. Refer to Section 8 for the procedure.

Note: The connector O-rings are pre-lubricated by the factory and should not require additional lubrication for the initial assembly.

3. Use the 216B key tool (accessory) to unscrew the dust cap (see Figure 3 ) from the MST optical port.

4. Clean both the optical port adapter and the drop cable connector (requires accessory kit

FHD-ACC-CLNKIT1) as specified in ADCP-96-067.

5. Align the drop cable connector with the optical port as shown in Figure 4 . The pointer on the drop cable connector should line up with the notch on the optical port.

5.3

Disconnecting Drop Cable From MST Optical Port

Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look

into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end.

Use the following procedure to disconnect a drop cable from an optical port on the MST enclosure:

1. Unscrew the optical port dust cap from the drop cable dust cap (see Figure 5 ).

2. Unscrew the drop cable connector coupling nut from the optical port (see Figure 4 ).

3. Inspect the optical port dust cap O-ring for dryness and apply O-ring lubricant (MST-

ACC-LUBE1) to the O-ring if dry. Refer to Section 8 for the required procedure.

4. Thread the optical port dust cap into the optical port and tighten using the 216B key tool

(see Figure 3 ).

5. Inspect the drop cable connector O-rings for dryness and apply O-ring lubricant (MST-

ACC-LUBE1) to each O-ring if dry. Refer to Section 8 for the required procedure.

6. Thread the drop cable dust cap onto the drop cable connector coupling nut and tighten until finger tight (see Figure 2 ).

Warning: Invisible infrared radiation can seriously damage the retina of your eye. Do not look

into the launching (output) end of an active fiber. A clean, protective cap or hood MUST be immediately placed over any radiating bulkhead receptacle or optical connector to avoid exposure to potentially dangerous amounts of radiation. This practice also helps to prevent contamination of connectors and adapters.

6 PULLING SOCK REMOVAL

Cable assembly is shipped with a black mesh pulling sock that is used for pulling the cable into position. After cable is pulled into position, the pulling sock can be removed using this procedure.

1. Drop cable assembly is shipped with convoluted tubing over the pulling sock and SC/APC connector. Remove convoluted tubing from cable assembly by cuting cable ties that secure convoluted tubing to the cable assembly.

Frequently Answers and Questions

What is a Universal Drop Cable?
A Universal Drop Cable is a type of cable used in FTTP (Fiber-to-the-Premise) networks to connect between the subscriber and the MST (terminal). It is a 3mm reduced bends radius cable sheathed in an OSP (Outside Plant) cable. The cable is terminated with a hardened OptiTap connector on one end and a SC/APC connector on the exposed 3mm cable end. The exposed 3mm cable and SC/APC connector is protected with a pulling sock. The outer sheath may be removed to allow the 3mm drop to be routed to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal).
What are the temperature considerations for the Universal Drop Cable?
The Universal Drop Cable has an operating temperature range of -40°F to +158°F (-40°C to +70°C), an installation temperature range of -22°F to +140°F (-30°C to +60°C), and a storage/shipping temperature range of -40°F to +167°F (-40°C to +75°C).
How do I clean the drop cable connector?
To clean the drop cable connector, you will need a cleaning kit (FHD-ACC-CLNKIT1). Unscrew the dust cap, examine the connector to determine which is the high and low side then use the cleaning tape cassette to clean the connector by sliding the connector end-face across the tape three times with light pressure. You should use a clean tape each time. When the connector is clean, reinstall the dust cap.
