SMIDLEY MINI-SCALE RETROFIT INSTRUCTIONS
!
1.
Before completing the installation of the digital indicator retrofit kit, inspect the overall condition of the scale and complete any cleaning or repairs that are necessary.
2.
After inspecting the scale, place it on a firm, level surface.
3.
Place a piece of 2”x4” lumber under each end of the scale platform. This will hold the platform 1 ½” from the work surface (Figure 1).

5.
Using either a metal cutting wheel or reciprocating saw, remove the hold down lever and its mounting plate. Grind smooth and repaint all bare steel.
6.
Install lower load cell mounting brackets (Figure 4) on both ends of weigh basket. Place the lower load cell mounting brackets inside the scale between the top frame tubes and the weigh basket top side angles. The angle cuts of the mounting brackets should be pointed up and out. Place the horizontal flanges with the slots on top of the weigh basket end tubes. Align slots of angle with the holes of the weigh basket top end tubes, where the lower bearing block used to be located.

7.
Fasten the lower load cell bracket flange to the top tube of the weigh basket with 1/4”x
1-3/4”
bolts, 1/4”
flat washers, and 1/4”
hex nuts with nylon insert (DO NOT TIGHTEN AT
THIS TIME). Check to make sure that the lower load cell bracket is parallel to the edge of
the top tube of the weigh basket.

8. Install the 3”
load cells onto lower load cell brackets with ½”-20 x 1”
bolts, 1/2”
flat washer, and 1/2”
lock washer (DO NOT TIGHTEN AT THIS TIME). The cables of both of the load cells should be routed between the frame and top of weigh scale basket with the free ends towards the same side of the scale.

9. Route the load cell cables to the end of the scale, making sure that the cables will not be accessible to the livestock or are not located in in a position that they could become damaged from abrasion or cuts.

10. Install the top load cell bracket with Indicator Mounting Post. (Figure 8), using the 1/4” x
1-3/4” bolts, 1/4” flat washer, and 1/4” hex nut with nylon insert on the end of the scale where the old dial head was located. Do not tighten hardware at this point. The vertical flange of the top load cell bracket will be on the outside of the vertical flange of the lower load cell bracket.

13.
Check the clearance of the weigh basket to the scale frame at this time and adjust so the weigh basket is centered and hangs straight.
14.
Tighten all hardware. Bend small tabs down on both ends of lower load cell angle and fasten with 1/8”
self-drilling screws. Use 1/8” self-drilling screws to fasten the top load cell bracket to the frame.
15.
Install the load cell cable junction box to the flange of the vertical digital indicator tube, using the 4-40 x 1/2”
machine screw and nut. The junction box should be installed so that the single cable is at the bottom of the junction box and the load cell cables are on the right hand side.
16.
Remove the 2’ x 4's from under the weigh basket at this time.
