PRECAUTIONS FOR ALUMINIUM CABLE USAGE IN KLEMSAN TERMINAL BLOCKS N EUTRAL VASELİNE • Precautions against oxidation should be taken while using aluminium cables. • There are several special products against oxidation, however the most practical and easy solution is using vaseline. • Application of vaseline on the stripped parts of the aluminium cables that contacting the terminal block, will prevent oxidation. Otherwise, the bare cable ends contacts the air and will start a rapid oxidation in the terminal block. Voltage values will drop consequently 2 N EUTRAL VASELİNE • If cutting the oxidized cable end is not needed, the oxide layer can be cleaned manually with a knife carefully to not affect the cable cross-section. • Vaseline is applied to the surfaces after the cleaning process. 3 • Aluminium cables are not flexible as copper cables, therefore they are mostly in solid and stranded form. • While using aluminium cables, especially the stranded types, conductive materials should be carefully watched against braking and cracking. Otherwise, the cross-section of the cable will decrease and terminal temperatures will increase as a result. 4 • Conductivity rates of aluminium cables are lower than copper cables. • Rated current values indicated in the terminal block data sheets should not be considered while using aluminium cables. While using aluminium cables, the current rate indicated for copper cables should be multiplied by 0.7, the result will give the maximum current value which should not be exceeded unless otherwise indicated. 5 • Maximum torque values indicated in the technical specifications should not be exceeded while using aluminium cables. • Users should check the tightening process every other day according to the torque values indicated in terminal block data sheets and make sure that the screws are correctly tightened in the given maximum torque value. • Aluminium cables get softer in time and this cause the connection loose. Connections should be checked regularly as indicated above 6 • Stripping lengths indicated in the terminal block data sheets are quite important especially for aluminium cable connections. • Aluminium cables without insulation can easily become oxidized. + 7 • Narrow curves or corners should be avoided while using aluminium cables within panels and wiring ducts, wiring ducts corners should be as wide as possible. Otherwise, risks of cable braking, bending or cracking possibilities will increase. 8 CORRECT ANGLE WRONG ANGLE • It is recommended to use Al/Cu type insulated cable terminals with stranded aluminium cables. 9
