Performance

The truck is designed for lowest TCO (total cost of ownership). The drive train has a new designed transmission, part of the gear reduction has moved to the front axle. The new truck is powered by an industrial strength diesel engine, or a high performance high torque LPG engine. Engine power and torque are an optimum combination with low RPM and low fuel consumption.

A specially positioned air-intake behind the operator position and a cyclone air cleaner protect the fuel system and engine against dust and dirt.

Ergonomic operator position

The operator compartment layout is designed to facilitate easy access. It is easy to get on and off the truck. Installed as standard are ergonomically arranged manual hydraulic control (MC) levers and an ergonomical sized steering wheel. A full hydrostatic steering system allows precise steering with low effort. The seat is a full suspension seat with weight and position adjustment controls. The overhead guard has increased torso clearance. All features and functionalities contribute to reduce strain on the operator. Low noise, vibrations, a clear LCD display and additional operator support features reduce the effort to drive and operate the truck.

IPS2 system

Service intervals: 500 hours

Introduction

Productive and versatile

Smart design has resulted in a much shorter truck. Especially for the smallest truck FD/FG40N) the reduction makes it very compact. The addition of a 5.5 ton truck completes the range and fits neatly between the five and six ton capacities.

Safety

Standard on the truck are: a seat with operator restraints and seat belt, backup alarm and an electronic parking brake that is easy to operate and has a audible reminder. The IPS2 system uses a seat switch to prevent hydraulic actions. The parking brake is automatically activated 3 seconds after the operator leaves the seat, provided the truck speed is below 0.4 km/h.

Easy maintenance

Standard service intervals are set at 500 hours. A special counter in the

VCM keeps track of the hours the engine has been running. Daily checks of the truck and engine are made almost effortless and easy to do. The floor plate can be removed without tools in a matter of seconds. The engine cover opens wide for excellent access to engine and transmission components.

The new LCD meter display in the instrument panel informs the operator of maintenance and service requirements. For instance when something is wrong with the truck or the engine, fault codes and/or error codes are displayed. With the error codes trouble shooting is made easier and raises availability and productivity of the truck.

CEOM1343 5

Typical applications

Applications

Our FD/FG40-55N models are designed to function flawlessly in all sorts of applications and environments. The standard truck has a well balanced design for every day work. Adding options will make this productive truck even better suited for special applications in difficult environments. Dust

Prevention and Clogging Prevention option packages offer further protection against harsh working conditions.

Stevedoring

Stevedoring applications are often multiple-shift (24/7), outside and sometimes in coastal areas or sea ports. IC trucks are the preferred product to support this application. Stevedoring applications in the Nordic regions require a panel cabin or full tiltable cabin (factory option).

Timber

Lift trucks on timber yards nearly always operate outside on uneven roads with very wide loads. Productivity (stability and residual capacity) is significantly improved when the truck is equipped with dual drive wheels

(factory option).

Brick and Block

These applications are often dusty and require trucks equipped with additional filters to avoid dust reaching delicate fuel, transmission or hydraulic parts (special air filter, hydraulic filter, brake booster filters, etc.).

Dedicated option packages are available. Dual drive wheels are recommended in situations with uneven floors and high stacking is required.

A side-shifter can provide precise stacking. Some brick and block applications involve dual pallets and require four forks or special clamps.

CEOM1343 6

Applications

Concrete & Clay Pipe

This type of application is often dusty and requires additional filters. A Dust

Prevention option package will help to shield the engine against the damaging effects of dust. Also special attachments (poles) are used in this industry.

Recycling & Metal Industry

In the recycling industry trucks should be protected with a Clogging

Prevention package (option). This package will prevent clogging of the radiator with lint and small parts of paper. It prevents the engine from overheating. Solid pneumatic tires are recommended to shield against punctured tires.

A double air filter can be added to the truck, a Dust Protection package is recommended and combines existing options at a reduced price.

CEOM1343 7

Applications

Bottling Industry

Health and safety regulations in the bottling industry require IC trucks to have low exhaust emissions. The FG40-55N models are equipped with the efficient and high performance TB45 LPG engine with standard a 3-way catalytic converter. On the FD40-50N models with the S6S diesel engines, a catalytic converter is available as a factory option, a particle / soot filter as a

CSM option. Some bottling applications require a double pallet handler, others are pallet-less and require a slip-sheet push/pull attachment.

Paper

Most paper applications require paper roll clamps. In particle-rich environments, large core radiators (less clogging) and extra filters can help reduce downtime. The optional low overhead guard height of 2250mm allows this truck to enter most industrial standard containers.

A special Clogging Protection package is available as an option to prevent fibers and paper particles entering the truck and engine. It is a dedicated combination of existing options offered at a reduced price to provide an adequate protection for the application.

CEOM1343 13

Electronic parking brake

IPS2 system

Operator Position

Parking brake

The parking brake mechanism is of the

‘negative brake activation’ type and built into the transmission unit. The park brake is released by applying hydraulic pressure, without pressure the park brake is activated. Without hydraulic pressure available, a special bolt is needed to mechanically release the park brake.

IPS2

In normal operation your lift truck will drive in a creep mode when the direction lever is placed in the forward or reverse position at engine idle (not pressing the accelerator pedal). The driving interlock system will not allow the lift truck's transmission to stay in the forward or reverse position when you are out of the operator's seat. If the operator leaves the operator's seat for 3 seconds, a switch in the operator's seat activates the driving interlock system. This action causes the system to cut power and to electrically shift the transmission to neutral. The transmission will disengage but the direction lever will not physically move to the neutral position. To reactivate the transmission, sit in the operator's seat and place the direction lever to the neutral position and back to the direction of travel.

The parking brake will work when the lift truck is on level ground, synchronizing with the driving interlock. However, when the lift truck is on an incline, the lift truck will start to move in the direction of the downgrade. Even if the driving interlock system is activated, the lift truck may move in the direction of the downgrade when the lift truck is on a grade. In this case, apply the brakes and sit securely in the operator's seat.

Overhead guard

The overhead guard is designed to protect the operator while allowing maximum forward and upward visibility. The standard overhead guard height is 2296 mm. Compared to the former Kmodel, the torso clearance increased by 16 mm. For applications that require the truck to drive into a standard container, a special low overhead guard is available with 2250 mm height.

CEOM1343 14

Operator Position

Engine cover

The engine cover is well insulated on the inside to reduce noise from the engine compartment and also to soften vibrations. For the Panel Cabin and the DeLuxe Cabin the engine cover is lined with an extra cover of soft coated material.

Frame and body

Halogen front work lights and combination lights

Halogen lights are standard on the Grendia EX trucks with two front work lights, two front combination light and two rear combination lights.

Frame and body

An important first step in designing a strong and durable forklift truck is designing a robust frame. The Finite Element Modelling (FEM) design process used by our designers does just that. FEM utilizes computer programs to model the truck frame. Loads are applied to the computer frame and the computer mathematically calculates the stresses incurred by the frame. Once the stresses are identified, engineers can make changes to the frame “model” to eliminate or reduce the stresses. This process is repeated until a desired frame model is achieved. Then the actual frame is built and further stress testing is done to confirm the computer results.

The complete frame assembly consists of two side frames, tanks, a rear cross-member, a front cross member, front and rear towers to mount the head guard on. The front dashboard is bolted to the frame. A ”unitized” frame construction simply means all of these sub-elements are welded together to produce a one piece welded frame. “Unitize” construction provides exceptional frame rigidity and maintenance free durability. The hydraulic tank is located on the right side while the fuel tank is located on the left side of the frame. Both tanks are completely integrated and are a structural part of the chassis. Three different frames are used for the truck depending on the capacity of the truck.

Counter weight

The counterweight is the weight to keep the fork lift truck in balance with and without load. The counter weight is shaped and sized to provide sufficient residual capacity for the truck with an optimum turning radius.

Airflow through the counterweight is guaranteed for the cooling system. The counterweight does not obstruct the rearward visibility of the operator.

Undercover standard for diesel models and 4 ton

LPG model

Industrial strength 6cylinder diesel engine

Product Details

Undercover (belly plate)

An undercover plate is standard for all diesel engine trucks in the range. The undercover protects against damage from debris and rocks. The belly plate also warrants that a directionally correct clean airflow support sufficient cooling to the engine. The smallest LPG engine powered truck is also fitted with this undercover plate

Undercover screen

For the LPG engine powered trucks an undercover screen is used. This screen protects against debris and also warrants sufficient cooling for the truck. The FG40N is an exception and has an undercover plate.

Truck label

On the dashboard of the truck a label provides mandatory information about the truck model, manufacturer, nominal capacity, nominal engine power, tires and serial number.

Diesel engine

The industrial-strength 6-cylinder in-line Mitsubishi Heavy Industries S6S engine was specifically designed for use in industrial forklift trucks. It offers excellent power and reliability. The Mitsubishi S6S diesel has earned the reputation of an 'environmentally friendly' engine because of its low emissions, low noise, and good fuel economy.

The S6S is a smooth running diesel engine which generates very little vibration. Two important design features contribute to this feature: the crankshaft is precision balanced both statically and dynamically, and specially tuned rubber engine mounts are used at the fan end of the engine to reduce vibration. Inherently a six cylinder engine produces fewer vibrations than a four cylinder (most competitors offer 4-cylinder engines on this class of trucks).

To further increase strength and durability, the crankshaft is bolted to the engine block with seven main bearings. This means that it is supported at each journal of the crankshaft and also at both ends. Collectively, these design features result in a strong, durable and very smooth running diesel engine. An engine label is affixed to the diesel engine by the manufacturer

MHI that states the net engine power.

The S6S is an indirect diesel with swirl-type pre-combustion chamber. Fuel is injected first into the pre combustion chamber for initial combustion of the atomized fuel, followed by complete burning in the cylinder.

CEOM1343 19

Product Details

This design reduces combustion noise, increases torque output at lower engine speeds, guarantees perfect combustion, very low emissions and reduces diesel smell.

Most diesel engines require a water separator to prevent engine fouling due to condensation (water particles) in the fuel. The S6S features an in-line plunger type fuel injection pump; a water separator is not required. In this case, condensation is forced into the pre-combustion chamber and is evaporated during the combustion process.

TB45 Nissan LPG engine electronically controlled

Low emissions and very fuel efficient with high power output

Product Details

LPG engine

The powerful 6-cylinder in-line TB45 engine (4.5 liter, 68.5 kW at 2450 rpm,

280 Nm at 1200 rpm) is designed for high performance industrial applications. The modern multi-port fuel injection system and drive-by-wire throttle control provide engine power while reducing noise and fuel consumption. The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls ignition, 'on-the-fly' timing adjustment and reduces performance in case of overheating to prevent expensive engine damage. Adjustments (for example adjusting airfuel ratio due to dirty air cleaners) are done automatically. In combination with the standard 3-way catalytic converter this engine's exhaust emission values are extremely low (EPA* compliant).

The engine block and cylinder head are made of cast iron for strength and durability. Because both are of the same material, thermo-elastic characteristics are equal, reducing the possibility of cracking.

The TB45 engine features overhead valve design. The intake and exhaust valves are located in the cylinder head as opposed to the engine block and are opened by hydraulic lifters driven by the camshaft within the block assembly. The overhead valve design provides top performance, longer engine life, better fuel economy and generally less repairs compared with the block design. The crankshaft in the TB45 engine is supported by seven main bearings. This type of construction provides excellent strength and durability to the crankshaft and piston rods within the engine assembly.

Standard 3-way catalytic converter on LPG models

Air intake smartly positioned

Product Details

Exhaust System

The exhaust muffler is located between the counterweight and radiator assembly. The muffler is constructed of dual walls with fiberglass insulation between walls to limit exhaust noise.

3-Way Catalytic Converter

(LPG only)

A 3-way catalytic converter is employed in the exhaust system as standard equipment and is used to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

Platinum, palladium and rhodium chemicals react with exhaust gases to reduce CO (carbon monoxide), HC (hydro carbon) and NOx (nitro-oxides). A lambda sensor in the exhaust system provides accurate feedback to the engine management system (ECM module) about the exhaust gases. The

ECM adjusts the fuel-air mixture accordingly ("closed loop" system). The end result is a truck with extremely low emissions, which contributes to a positive working environment.

Air Intake

The air intake helps to minimize dirt and dust entering the fuel system and engine components. The position of the air intake reduces the noise that reaches the operator’s ears. This position also shortens the air intake duct.

The cyclone air filter (double element) cleans the air before reaching the fuel system. The filter can be easily inspected or replaced without extra tools.

PTO

Standard: reliable and low maintenance transmissions

PowerShift transmission with automatic or turtle mode

Product Details

Cooling system

The radiator in the FD/FG40-

55N models is a corrugated wave fin type cross-flow radiator with aluminium core.

Coolant is pumped through the radiator in a uniform flow for maximum cooling efficiency. An oil cooler for the torque converter is built in the radiator.

The oil cooler is of the water cooled type using engine coolant to enhance the cooling efficiency of the torque converter oil. Engine coolant passes through the main core area of the radiator while transmission fluid passes through the separate cooler and is cooled by the engine coolant. The cooling system uses a high speed pusher fan setup to reduce chances of clogging and engine. The fan is driven directly from the engine by a PTO (power take off).

Transmission

A Powershift automatic transmission has two speeds forward and one speed reverse. The driving direction handle is positioned on the left hand side of the steering column. With a switch on the dashboard the transmission can be locked into first gear or turtle mode. The other position allows the automatic switching to second gear for higher driving speeds.

CEOM1343 23

Front axle

Final reduction on front axle with planetary gear wheel units

Product Details

For gear shifting a Powershift mechanism with oil pressure type multi-clutch is used. The direction lever and drive speed changeover switch are electrically connected to the forward-reverse selector solenoid valve and speed change solenoid valve via the VCM (vehicle control module) controller. The inching pedal is connected to the control valve with an inching cable. The transmission housing is a split housing, which separates the transmission from the torque converter housing.

The torque converter is located between the engine and the transmission and connects the engine flywheel to the transmission input shaft, operating as a fluid clutch to smoothly transfer power from the engine to the transmission. With engine load the torque converter can multiply the torque to the transmission, providing increased power on demand, while allowing smooth control maneuvering.

Front axle and final reduction differential.

The front axle assembly is fixed to the frame via supports in a power train full-floating system, which helps absorb power train vibration. The axle housing is divided in reduction differential part, a final reduction part and a wheel hub and brake part.

The final reduction mechanism is a planetary gear wheel unit. The ring gear of the planetary gear system is part of the front axle body.

Furthermore it comprises a sun gear and three planetary wheels.

CEOM1343 24

Pneumatic tires standard

FD/FG55N with solid pneumatic tires

Hydraulic system and brake system share the same oil

Product Details

Drive axle

A full-floating type drive axle is used in the FD/FG40-55N models. The drive axle housing is designed to absorb shocks. The single piece casting eliminates the bolts and seals found on many competitive products.

The rear axle suspension system employs a center-pivot bush mount.

The rear axle housing is built in an I-shape body, which enables the steering cylinder to be easily attached and removed.

The steer axle is fully hydraulic and has just a few linkage points. Fewer moving parts results in higher reliability and steering efforts are very low.

The axle has insulating rubber mounts and uses an industry standard design.

The bearings are of the needle bearing type and greasing can be done through various grease points. King pin grease points allow extra greasing in harsh applications. The tie rods used to connect the steer knuckles to the steering cylinder are fixed in length and require no adjustment.

Tires

Pneumatic tires are standard on the

FD/FG40N through FD/FG50N.

The FD/FG55N models have standard solid pneumatic tires. Pneumatic tires can be ordered on the 5.5 ton model, but these should be high pressure type Michelin or

Continental with tire pressure of 10 bar.

Braking system

The wheel brake system has a set of drum brakes installed at each side of the front axle. The oil used for the hydraulic system is shared with the brake system.

Hydraulic oil from the hydraulic tank is pressurized at the gear pump for the brake system. The pump is installed at the transmission PTO outlet. The wheel brake valve activates the wheel cylinder, the wheel cylinder pressure changes depending on the stroke of the brake pedal.

CEOM1343 25

FD/FG40N-50CN: 60 mm drum brake shoes

FD/FG50N-55N: 100 mm drum brake shoes

Product Details

The brake system employs an internal expansion duo-servo unit. The duoservo unit provides an equal amount of braking force to both forward and reverse drive. The actual drum brake-unit at the wheel consists of a primary and secondary shoe, with hold-down pins on the back plate. An automatic adjuster is employed to keep a well balanced clearance between the brake linings and the drum. The brake shoes are made of non-asbestos lining with good frictional characteristics. The standard drum brake shoes are 60 mm for the FD/FG40N through FD/FG50CN models. The FD/FG50N and

FD/FG55N models have standard 100 mm drum brake shoes.

Replacing drum brakes has been made much easier compared to the Kmodel trucks. The wheel hub does not have to be removed first, which reduces service time. The pictures show the drum brake unit and the internal construction with drum brake shoes.

Parking brake

The parking brake is located inside the transmission and operated electronically with a push/pull button on the dashboard. When the parking brake switch on the dashboard is pulled, the VCM controller transmits an electric signal to the solenoid of the parking brake valve. The solenoid valve opens and the hydraulic oil flows to the parking brake port in the transmission. Inside the parking brake, the brake piston moves and presses the springs to separate the brake disks from each other, thus releasing the parking brake.

Serviceability

The updated FD/FG40-55N models have a competitive service interval of

500 hours. Service costs are minimized by allowing quick and easy access to service areas.

The engine hood and removable floor plate gives good access to engine bay and transmission area. Opening the engine cover causes a switch to switch off the running engine. This is a mandatory safety feature. The radiator can be accessed by removing the radiator cover between the engine cover and counterweight. The layout of the truck interior components and large intercomponent space allow quick and easy inspection without much effort. The quick release battery connector to disconnection the battery reduces the chance of accidental short circuits during service.

Simplex, duplex and triplex masts

Standard MC control with

3-way valve block

Masts

A wide range of simplex, duplex and triplex masts is available. Masts are not interchangeable with the previous K-model trucks. The reasons are that the mast mounting on the front axle is different and also there is a change of the tilt cylinder position. In the Appendix at the end of this manual you will find a table with mast types and mast codes. The standard mast comes with a carriage of 1190 mm wide fork carriage.

Hydraulics

For mast control the minimum amount of hydraulic functions requires two valves, one valve for mast lift and one valve for mast tilt. Additional valves are used for attachments.

Hydraulic pump

The transmission is equipped with a PTO that drives the hydraulic pump for lift/tilt mast functions, attachment operation and the brake system. The hydraulic pump is of the single gear type.

Hydraulic valves block

The standard configuration comes with three valves and FC (fingertip control). The fingertip control system is mounted on a fully adjustable armrest, the valves are controlled electronically. An MC (manual control) control system is optional.

Three-way and four-way valve FC control blocks are available as options.

Three-way and four-way valve cowl mounted mechanical control levers (MC) are also available as option. A five-way valve is available as a CSM option.

CEOM1343 27

Product Details

A priority valve is mounted within the control valve and provides priority oil flow to the steering pump. This ensures smooth, easy steering control during multiple hydraulic functions such as lifting and steering.

The adjustable flow regulator valve is in-line between the lift control valve and the lift cylinders. It restricts the flow of oil returning from the lift cylinders, thereby limiting the lowering speed if needed. The lowering speed can be adjusted by a screw on the valve. This feature allows the customer to tailor the lowering speed for each application.

Auto light control activates the front flood lights when entering dark areas such as containers. The light switch handle is located on the right hand side of the steering column and has a position for auto-light-switch. The sensor is located on the front side of the steering column.

Engine cover switch

A switch is activated when the engine cover is opened while the engine is running. The switch will stop the engine. This is a mandatory safety measure to prevent accidents. A bypass connection can be made for service purposes.

Battery

A ‘Quick disconnect’ is allows for easy and fast disconnect of the negative terminal of the battery and the common ground (frame) of the truck.

This is meant for service to prevent accidental short circuits. LPG engine trucks have a 70Ah battery, diesel engine trucks have a 110Ah battery.

Alternator

Both the LPG and diesel engine powered trucks have a 12V / 50A alternator.

Starter motor

A 12V / 1.4 kW starter motor for LPG engines and a 12V/ 3.0 kW starter motor for diesel engine truck.

Product Details

Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

The vehicle control module controls the main functions of the truck. Safety related functions such as PDS+, hydraulic actions, transmission control, parking brake and automatic lights. The VCM is linked with various input and output signals like the seat switch, directional control switch, transmission solenoid, parking brake, hydraulic control valve, instrument panel and auto light control. Most options also rely on the VCM, like maximum speed settings The VCM is located in the left footstep of the vehicle. The unit is protected against dirt and splashing water by a plastic cover. Its protection class is IP64.

All trucks are equipped with a VCM. There is a specific VCM for manual hydraulic controlled trucks and another one for fingertip hydraulic controlled trucks.

All LPG trucks are equipped with a separate ECM controller dedicated to engine management. The ECM is again connected with various input and output signal. Examples for input sensors are, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, accelerator switch, lambda sensor signal and engine coolant temperature etc.

CEOM1343 29

UP-TIME service and maintenance software with graphical user interface

Product Details

Examples of output signals of the ECM are the ignition coils, the throttle valve and the LPG injector. The VCM and ECM communicate through a

CAN bus. This ensures quick and reliable control; at the same time the CAN bus simplifies the wiring harness in the vehicle.

The VCM allows easy and quick trouble shooting through a serial connection and by using a service tool / laptop. The VCM stores fault codes of the vehicle; it doesn’t store fault codes of the ECM. Through the VCM the condition and values of all input and output of the vehicle and engine can be checked. A list of fault and error codes can be found in the Operations and

Maintenance Manual (OMM).

Service and maintenance software ‘Up-Time’

A special GSE connector is located underneath the cupholder in the dashboard can connect to a personal computer.

Running ‘Up-Time’ software on the laptop computer allows easy communicating with the VCM. The tool can also check the input and output sensors as well as settings on the instrument panel.

This feature reduces down time and allows pinpointing possible faults. Using this software will avoid repairing trucks on a trial and error basis and thus replacing parts that are not failing.

Service interval 500 Service Meter Units

The required 500 smu (service meter units) interval reduces lifetime costs and also down-time related to service. Oil changes, lubrication and adjustments are not required as often on the previous model.

Attachments

A range of attachments is available such as hook-on and integral side shifters, hook-on sideshifter-fork positioners and integral sideshifter-fork positioners.

The mast charts in the Appendix of this document provide residual capacity data for trucks with attachments such as side shifters and side shifter fork positioners.

Two cabin types

Panel Cabin

DeLuxe Cabin

Special Options

Cabins

Two cabin types are available for trucks build at the factory.

* Panel cabin (Option code PCAB)

* Full Tilt-able cabin (Option code FTCAB)

Panel Cabin.

The Panel cabin is based on the High Visibility overhead guard. This overhead guard is designed for the Panel cabin and the starting point for all four optional configurations. It is included when ordering the PCAB option.

The four configurations are:

• FR+TP: High Visibility overhead guard plus a laminated glass front screen and a polycarbonate top. The front screen has a washer and wiper combination. The polycarbonate top is covered with a glass cover to protect against UV-light and influence from the weather..

• REAR: this configuration starts with FR+TP and a rear window of tempered glass is added with washer wiper combination

• PVC: PVC doors are added on the previous configurations

FR+TP+REAR

• STLD: Steel doors with sliding window are added on FR+TP+REAR configuration. The steel doors have one sliding window per door.

The picture below shows the excellent visibility of this cabin (PVC doors featured in this case).

CEOM1343 32

DeLuxe cabin can be fully tilted for excellent service and maintenance access

Wet Disk brakes are sealed brakes oil cooled brakes for heavy duty applications

Special Options

Additional options can be installed on the Panel Cabin such as an integrated heater and/or an air-conditioning unit. The height of the Panel Cabin truck is the same as for a truck with standard overhead guard.

Full Tilt able Cabin

The DeLuxe cabin has an integrated heater and front, tail, stop and indicator lights. The direction signaling-lights are integrated in the large floodlights on the cabin. The cabin doors can swing open wide, offering good service access to the engine area. The cabin is prepared for a radio (mounting holes for DIN sized radio (short 'compact' model preferred) and speakers). The radio is not supplied since this is a serious personal preference. The standard seat on a truck with this cabin is a full-suspension vinyl seat. Total height of the truck with cabin is 2371 mm (standard pneumatic tires, excluding mast). This is the standard ‘h6 dimension’ of 2296 mm plus an additional 75 mm extra for the FT-cabin.

Oil Cooled Wet Disk Brakes (Option code WDB)

The Wet Disk Brake is a completely sealed braking system that has major advantages over trucks with conventional drum brake systems. The WDB’ system is designed for high availability of the truck, low cost of ownership during the life time of the truck, ease of operation for driver satisfaction and higher productivity

The wet disk brake system is ideal in areas where high concentrations of abrasive materials are found. Think of applications in the metallurgic industry, stone quarries and recycling. Also applications in maritime environments like in ports and the fishing industry can benefit from the new functionality on our trucks.

The OCWDB brake system is locked away and cooled with oil, which means that the brakes do not wear due to the abrasive dust. The brakes operate at lower temperatures cooled by oil. This means that glazing of the drum brake shoes does not occur, which is an additional benefits.

CEOM1343 33

Flexcontrol transmission

Protection with four productivity increasing features

Auto-deceleration

Controlled power reversal

Special Options

FlexControl (option code FLEXCTRL))

Flexcontrol (which includes the WDB option) greatly enhances the productivity of a truck. It is also a transmission protection system that will prevent certain operator abuse of the truck and safeguards against driver error that could quickly damage the drive-train. Some operators consider the driving experience similar to a hydrostat system.

Four operation-assist functions are bundled to support the driver to smoothly drive the truck and almost effortlessly control it. These four functions are as follows:

Auto deceleration function

The truck slows down automatically when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal. This is ideal truck behavior when approaching the spot where a load must be picked up or delivered.

The brakes do not have to be used by the operator (or far less) compared to a standard truck. The result is ease of operation, less fatigue for the operator, a more natural truck operation. Three settings, high / medium / low, can be made in the GSE software to tweak the deceleration speed of the truck. The function is activated at speeds of 5 km/h and above, with the accelerator released. If the speed drops below 3 km per hour or the accelerator is touched the truck will revert to the standard behavior.

Controlled power reversal function

Drive wheel spinning is prevented or greatly reduced when the driver shifts from forward driving to reverse (or vice versa) while at full throttle or high speed. The controlled power reversal function will automatically slow down and switch driving direction at a low safe speed, even if the accelerator pedal is still activated. The slow down of the truck and change of driving direction is established within two or three truck lengths. This functionality is highly beneficial for reasons of speed of operation and convenient for the operator. It saves the truck tires and protects the transmission from additional wear or damage. When the direction (FNR) switch is operated and the speed is 3 km/h or below, the actual direction change will take place.

From an investment protection perspective, it prevents damage due to operator abuse to the drive-train of the truck. It means that our already reliable transmission is well protected, so expensive repairs can be avoided.

CEOM1343 34

Hill Hold

Smooth start driving

Value proposition with

WDB and Flexcontrol

Cost savings and productivity increase

Special Options

Hill Hold function:

The benefit of ‘Hill Hold’ is the much improved controllability of the truck on a ramp or gradient. The truck will hold its position on a ramp when the driver applies the brake pedal for more then 0.5 seconds. The WDB brakes are activated in this case and deactivated the moment the operator touches the accelerator pedal again. There is no need to hold on to the brake pedal or apply the parking brake.

Please note that deactivation also occurs when the inching pedal is operated.

A great improvement of truck operation results and it will increase the efficiency with which the driver uses the truck. It can also produce savings in preventing damage to loads, loading docks or racking systems.

Smooth start driving function:

When the truck is at stand-still with the engine running, the truck’s transmission will not shift into gear if the accelerator pedal is not fully released. Smooth start protects the truck’s transmission, it reduces tire wear significantly and tire marks are either prevented at all or vastly reduced.

Overall, there is a reduction in the cost of operation in tires, corrective maintenance to the transmission unit and it keeps the truck operational much longer.

Value Proposition for a Grendia EX truck with WDB and Flexcontrol

For this value proposition, we feature a FD45N / FD50N truck with WDB brakes and Flexcontrol. The truck has a standard mast, regular forks and carriage, no special attachments. The application for the truck is the brick and block industry. The company premises have a patched pattern of surfaces with some smooth concrete, but also gravel and some sandy spots.

For the financial calculation we assume the truck is on a 5 year lease contract with one customer for an average of 1500 hours per year.

The lease price per month is left out of the calculation, since it does not influence the calculation. For the Flexcontrol + WDB option we should add approximately euro 50 to the monthly lease. This includes service and maintenance including normal wear, but excludes tires. In this calculation the Flexcontrol truck is compared to a standard truck without Flexcontrol.

Extra cost of the Flexcontrol truck over the 5 year lease period.

Only the extra costs that are additional to the truck cost are listed below:

Extra WDB and Flexcontrol lease cost (5 year total): euro 3000.- (50 euro per month over 5 year)

CEOM1343 35

Summary of savings and benefits

Special Options

WDB oil change per 2000 hr at 3x euro 250.- = euro 750.- (750 euro over 5 years).

Total extra cost for Flexcontrol is euro 3750 over 5 year

Operational savings can be accomplished with Flexcontrol:

Operational cost savings can be found in tire wear/replacement and drum brake shoe replacements.

Brakes are normally included in the monthly lease contract. Tires are normally not in the lease contract price, since wear depends heavily on the way the truck is driven..

Tires service contracts typically work with one euro per operational hour which translates to 1500hrs x 1.00 euro x 5 year = euro 7500.-

Savings on tires could reach up to 50%, depending on driving surface and mostly on operator behavior or abuse during driving. As an example:

Tire savings of 50% means euro 3750 saved over 5 year

Summarizing cost and savings:

Overall, the extra cost of WDB + Flexcontrol is compensated with savings over the 5 year period. With oil cooled wet disk brakes on a truck the regular brake shoe replacement is not needed anymore. It could mean a lower base truck lease price per month (or it offsets the WDB oil replacements with the savings on brake shoes).

Transmission protection is a major investment protection against abuse. For a business it could mean a highly profitable second life of the truck in short term rental. A repair or revision of a transmission on average costs about

4000 to 5000 euro. A new transmission could amount to 10,000 euro.
