Anniversary Catalogue
Haarlem, The Netherlands
Dear Nextimers,
In 2010, NeXtime celebrates its 40th year anniversary. I am also 40 years old so I
know how that feels. A 40 year anniversary calls for a party but many people who
turn 40 do not like to celebrate this milestone as it reminds them of how old they
are. Age of a company on the other hand is thought of as positive, probably as it is
dependent on its management as much as on outside factors too like luck and the
global economy.
Many of us have experienced the effects in their own business of the downfall of the
financial market. My personal view is that one learns from the bad times more than
the good times; and that you can use this to prepare for the times to come. Now is
the right time to recognize new and positive developments.
Hans and Hannie Frie
One of these developments is the increasing awareness of the environment.
NeXtime has the same ‘green’ responsibility and at the same time we need to
deliver a higher level of service, increase product quality demands, packaging
requirements and continuously monitor cost. I call this ‘Survival Of The Smartest’
and it is a transformation that NeXtime is going through on all levels: from design, to
manufacturing, to sales.
It is with pride that we present our new 2010 collection in this anniversary catalogue.
We give you a glimpse of our company history and photos of our former and current
staff from around the world. I am confident that our continued focus on clocks will
ensure another 40 years of NeXtime success.
See you NeXtime!
Alain Frie

The colors spectrum of the Test-page is world wide known on television. This multi-color image became an icon in every
interior. The idea behind this clock is to give you a sentimental moment of recognition with a sense of humor. We are
always in a hurry; we look at a clock to see whether we are on schedule. This clock makes you realize that there is time:
“One moment please!”. Never run too fast against the time, because it never stops. Live your time because time has to
be lived, it is beautiful.

HENK STALLINGA
Dutch designer Henk
Stallinga challenges
our relationship
between product
and perception,
imagination and
experience.
Stallinga’s wide
range of products
is conceived as a
whole of which the
technical, functional
and materiality of the
objects are related
and fused together.
The clocks designed
by Stallinga, such
as Focus, Quispel
and Clockwork are
clear examples of
this. These quirky
well-considered
differences set
Stallinga apart.
The Clockwork (Orange) alludes
to two parts working in unison.

NeXtime Wins Designer Prize in Paris
At the Trade Fair Maison et Objet, NeXtime received a prize
selected by auFeminin.com (www.aufeminin.com); a French
website that aims to showcase products for the modern women
according to the latest trends. The “Chef” (2925), designed by an
American designer Steve Buss, was selected as Prix Découverte
(Discovery 2009). The clock was selected based on original
and simple design. AuFeminin.com found the “Chef”a great
gift idea, particularly for homes with retro decor.

with an unexpected
twist. He celebrated
his success with his
“Clock & Roll” roll-up
cuckoo clock design.
2988; Wall clock, 41x21 cm, plastic, “Cuckoo weeble”
designer: Walter Jonker
Walter Jonker sees it as a challenge to redefine traditional objects and shapes in an unexpected way.
Examples are the old clocks on which the ‘Frisian’, ‘Cuckoo’ and ‘Cuckoo-Weeble’ are based. These clocks
have a long tradition in which the shape is narrowly defined and have an exact meaning or expectation that we
all recognize. In these clocks, this expectation is made loose from the shape, which brings lightness and
playfulness. Walter Jonker - creating the unexpected -

Our history....
In 1970, Hans and Hannie Frie (yes, the parents of our current CEO, Alain) established the company, Alma, in which during that time the clock industry was highlighted by beautiful
hand-made mechanical clocks. Alma was acknowledged to be among the best in the world with their collection of typically Dutch mechanical clocks like “ Zaanse”, English
table clocks as well as with French style “comtoises” and planetarium clocks, examples of fine craftsmanship.. The outstanding craftsmanship and strong designs of Alma’s
mechanical clocks and of its exclusive brand “Christiaan Huygens” soon received international recognition. This small, family-owned Dutch company was soon selling clocks
around the globe, including Japan and U.S.A..
When Alain joined the family business he started at the bottom, literally speaking. He worked on the production floor, which was located downstairs from the main office. He
learned every aspect of making a clock. As he was going through all the aspects of his parent’s clock making business he realized that the clocks industry was rapidly developing
and shifting focus from the traditional mechanical clocks to strong contemporary clock designs. It was the beginning of the transformation from Alma into the company, as we
know it today, NeXtime.
History
|
41
From the start of NeXtime we worked with designers who brought creativity to the collection of clocks that have made a signature mark on the company it has evolved into
today: glass clocks like “Spinning Time” and “Test Page” and everlasting designs like, “Plug Inn”. One of our trademark clocks, “Beauty”, beautifully encompasses our 40 year
anniversary with it’s mechanical movement in a contemporary design, designed by our founding father: Hans Frie.
Now trading in more than 60 countries and our own offices spanning the globe, our design led clocks and our 40 years of manufacturing experience will continue to significantly
contribute to the clock industry. NeXtime fully embraces the latest technologies, the use of the internet and our company’s responsibility to it’s environment with our “GreenTime
Initiative”; NeXtime is committed to design and manufacture clocks that will guarantee “watching time pass” for another 40 years, a worthwhile moment in our time.

The original idea was to have a serious looking image of a city-scape with one small church-clock. This was
changed into a world-clock that shows different time zones. The different cities are melted together. Then a small
Godzilla was placed into Tokyo as a joke. This was further developed and the clock was filled with all sorts of extra
figures and joke’s making it a humorous, lively, global one-world-picture that also tells the time.

Plug-inn is a clock which is a balance of modern and classic design. It is a timeless design, a sustainable design for any time.

The outward way of j-me thinking always looks at word association, therefore the saying “time is
money” naturally links a clock with money. They used the 4 major global currency symbols (knowing
that NeXtime is an international brand) and developed an eye catching interface, modern and
appealing to those who value their time & money!
A timeless piece of design!

JACK
WEISSELBERGER
Jack is a Dutch
designer with a longstanding involvement
in clocks. Jack gets
his inspiration from
the art movements
like “de Stijl” and
“Bauhaus”: their
unique use of honest
form’s, materials
and colors. Jack
owned, participated
and worked the
past 25 years for
companies like Art in
Time, Karlsson, B&W
clocks and since
2005 for NeXtime.

B2006011; Wall clock, 40x40 cm, glass, “Square Roman Silver”
designer: Jack Weisselberger
Jack spent the past 25 years designing and developing clocks - always in search of different forms and shapes. Instead of the classic
round he chose a square, which suited better in its habitat, a room. This clock is like a chameleon assumes the color of its background and through it’s simplicity, doesn’t disturb the atmosphere in the room. The result is the ‘SQUARE EASY’ and along the same
line came the ‘SQUARE ROMAN’ with it’s transparent Roman numbers.

ALAIN FRIE
Creating clocks is
something Alain was
born with. As a kid he
helped after school
at the assembly
line or packing the
clocks. 25 years
later he came
into the business
and changed his
fathers company
into a modern clock
producer. Alain’s new
clock concept and
ideas is something
that happens during
countless visits to
the factories and
his permanent hunt
for new materials,
shapes and artwork.
His designs have to
be innovative, clean
and fun.

Radio-controlled clocks always display the exact time, since they receive regular time updates over the air via a constantly broadcast
long wave radio signal. The change from summer to winter time is also completely automatic. Our radio-controlled clocks receive the
signal that is transmitted from Frankfurt (Germany) which has a radius of 2000 km.

Clocks over the years
1970 | 602 Zaanse Clock
1973 | 613 Het Schippertje
1975 | 600 Frisian Tail Clock
The ”ZAANSE CLOCK” represents one of the
most stylish timekeeping pieces of Dutch history.
It derives its name from the region of Holland
near Amsterdam: “Zaanland” where it was first
manufactured around 1720. Alma produced
thousands of “Zaanse clocks” and it was this
clock that was the founding product for Alma.
“Het SCHIPPERTJE” is a smaller version of the
old Frisian Tail clock and was built to fit the limited
space in a ship’s cabin and was technically
adjusted so the movement of the ship had no
influence on the clock’s accuracy. This ship clock
is a good example of one of many models that
contributed to Alma’s success.
The “FRISIAN TAILCLOCK” originated in the
period around 1800 and the hand painted face
exemplifies the important role water plays in Dutch
life. Friesland, the northern part of The Netherlands,
was the most important centre of the production for
these types of clocks. The “Frisian Tail Clock” was
manufactured in large numbers for many years.
History
|
1978 | 703/719 Comtoise
1980 | 609 English Table Clock
1983 | 1402 Christiaan Huygens
The comtoise is a French clock built in the
Jura by farmers and became the signature
French traditional clock. The movements are
big and bulky and the exterior was brass and
ornate. Alma owned the exclusive rights of a
comtoise movement produced in the Black
Forest in Germany which was in great demand
as popularity of this type clocks grew in the late
‘70s.
Ever since the 17th century table clocks with
functions as calendars, planetarium and moon
faces; in beautiful wooden cases are very popular.
Alma extended her range of table clocks regularly
with new popular models and this small English
table clock was the start of a prestigious range of
table and mantle clocks.
In the beginning of the ’80 s Alma bought a
prestigious clock brand called Christiaan Huygens.
This range of clocks was a big range of very highend models. The dials were complicated pieces of
art and each clock of this range was manufactured
with great care and eye for detail. This planetarium
clock is a beautiful example of fine craftsmanship.
105
1984 | 1004 Amsterdammer
1985 | 1368 Frisian Tail
1988 | 217 Quartz clock
1990 | 262 Jan des Bouvrie
Christiaan Huygens–During the golden age
the Dutch produced these big grandfather
clocks for the beautiful houses along the
canals in Amsterdam. After buying the
brand Christiaan Huygens, Alma started
to reproduce copies of the very high-end
models produced in Holland during the
colonial times when Holland was one of the
most important trading nations in the world.
Christiaan Huygens–Another fine
example of a reproduction of clocks
produced during the golden age in
Holland.
It was a shock to the traditional
clock industry to experience
the increasing popularity of the
quartz movement and its impact
was devastating. This was the
beginning of the end of the
traditional clock industry. A new
clock era was born...
The famous Dutch designer Jan
des Bouvrie designed one of the
first NeXtime glass clocks. This
model has been extremely popular
for many years.

1993 | 279 Wooden Wally
1995 | 2287 Inflatable clock
2000 | 2610 Plug-inn
This clock is a success story! In the beginning
of the 90’s Alma klokken acquired a small
brand called NeXtime which was only sold in
Holland at the time. Alma first professionalized
the production and soon NeXtime clocks
became the company’s main activity with new
designs into the range.
The inflatable clock was designed by Alain
Frie.It was a big hit during the hype of
inflatable products. It was also the time that
Alma gradually moved their production to
China.
The Plug-inn, designed by Frits Vink is a world famous
clock. It is NeXtime’s all-time bestseller. Plug-inn is a clock
that shows a balance of modern and classic design.
At the turn of de millennium the company was about
to launch itself into the new century with a new name:
NeXtime. With Alain Frie as the new CEO it continued a
journey of timeless clock designs, designs for any time.

This type of clock originated in the 17th century in the period of Louis XIV (1643-1715),
le Roi Soleil, who reined France in one of its most blooming period of culture. The
nickname ‘SUN KING’ is dating from the ancient Egyptian cult, believing that the Faraos
descended from the sun. Thus one honored Louis XIV’s divine and godly leadership by
producing timekeeping pieces in a ‘sunny’ cadre.

PAOLO RENNA
Paolo Renna designs
from a strong inner
passion: respect and
love for nature and
the beauty of life.
He believes that real
beauty comes from
the inside and that
people show their
true selves through
what they wear.
For each person
is unique and has
a desire for love,
friendship and
harmony. That is
Paolo Renna’s
basic principle for
designing timeless
style elements that
each represent a part
of a personality.

MARK KOOIJ
Mark Kooij has
a broad range of
interests and that
reflects itself into a
divers spectrum of
advertising concepts,
inventions and, in
this case, industrial
designs. Funny,
bizarre, simple or
complex. If there
is anything typical
about his designs, it
could be the fact that
they always seem to
stand, maybe just
a little, out of the
ordinary. Like the
designer himself.

2915zi; Wall clock, 43 cm Ø, metal, gold, “Gash”
designer: Rike Beekman
Rike found the inspiration for the “Gash-clock” at a bakery store, where they used
paper coasters in the cake boxes. The simplicity of the pattern cut out in aluminum
transformed an old-fashioned paper product into a modern clock.
