The Future of CompactPCI® is Serial!
MEN Mikro Elektronik offers a wide product range of CompactPCI® single-board computers based on Intel® and
PowerPC® architectures for robust industrial and embedded applications. In addition to traditional industrial PC
functions, many boards provide the newest technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet, SATA or GSM/GPS. Mezzanine
slots and FPGA technology allow individual extension of I/O functions.
The CompactPCI® bus has become an established standard for building cost-effective, reliable industrial computers.
Users appreciate its modularity, robustness and economic efficiency.
However, during the last years the parallel PCI bus
technology has more and more been complemented
by fast serial point-to-point connections. For this
reason, the structure of a computer slowly changes
from a bus-based system to a system with a star
topology. CompactPCI® Serial is now supposed
to provide a smooth migration from the current
CompactPCI® standard to the modern point-topoint connections, at the same time supporting all
important serial interfaces.
The PICMG sub-committee is defining two standards to achieve this:

F11S – MEN's latest CompactPCI SBC with Intel® Atom™ and FPGA
PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI® PlusIO is based on and
extends the basic CompactPCI® PICMG 2.0 standard.
CompactPCI®PlusIO now makes it possible to lead
up to four PCI Express® x1 links, four SATA, four USB
2.0 as well as two Ethernet 1000Base-T interfaces to
the backplane.
CPU boards which support PICMG 2.30 (3U as well
as 6U) remain compatible to the CompactPCI® basic
standard without limitations and can also be used in
existing systems.
PICMG CPCI-S.0 CompactPCI® Serial, in contrast to
CompactPCI® PlusIO, is a new independent basic
standard. This standard introduces a completely new
connector, which enables a much higher signal density
and supports even higher transmission frequencies of
12 Gb/s and more. CompactPCI® Serial is consistently based on the mechanics of CompactPCI®, so it
remains 100% compatible to IEC 1101 (apart from
the connectors), but it only supports modern pointto-point connections.

Intel®-based 3U CompactPCI®/ PlusIO / Serial
A highlight of the MEN product range is the Intel®-based 3U CompactPCI® product family. The performance of
these boards ranges from the latest Core 2 Duo (2.2 GHz) down to the ultra low power Celeron® M 373 (1.0 GHz).
Thanks to this family concept, expensive and time-consuming system adaptations are not needed anymore.
The intercompatible Intel®-based boards enable a smooth migration to the next higher processor generation.
Existing system and software solutions can be continued to be used. If the performance of a running system has to
be increased, the existing single-board computer can be replaced by a new, higher-performance member of the MEN
product family. Long-term availability of at least five years from product start guarantees that the user’s project is
future-safe – a requirement in many embedded applications.
What’s special about these Intel® based boards is that their I/O functions can be extended through different side cards.
Depending on the requirements, the latter can expand the performance range by additional legacy I/O, USB, PMC or
XMC interfaces, multimedia functions, Gigabit Ethernet or FireWire for fast data exchange. In addition, the spectrum
of these side cards also includes extensions for CompactPCI® Express as well as the new CompactPCI® Serial systems.

MEN offers a broad range of processor architectures – specially configured for the desired area of application.
Due to their low power dissipation, PowerPC® processors have advantages especially in harsh and mobile
­environments.
The F50C is controlled by an MPC8548 and is embedded into a dedicated CCA frame for conduction cooling. The
5 HP assembly can be used with MEN's conduction-cooled subrack. It is designed for operation in a -40°C to +85°C
environment. For convection cooling, the F50P model is also available, which comes with a tailor-made heat sink
for different temperature requirements.
F50C – Conduction Cooled SBC with MPC8548
The large FPGA on the F50C allows to add additional user-defined functions such as graphics, touch, ­serial
i­nterfaces, fieldbus controllers, binary I/O etc. for the needs of the individual application in an extremely

3U CompactPCI® Industrial Communication and Carrier Boards
Industrial communication – wired or wireless – is an important mainstay in our time. Technologies such as GSM,
GPS, WLAN or Ethernet are used especially in mobile applications. MEN provides a number of CompactPCI®
boards also for this segment. While the F209L, for instance, supports the WLAN IEEE 802.11b standard for WEP
encryption, data transmission and an output power of 20 dBm, the F210 offers a combination of GPS, GSM and
UARTs. With a wide selection of CompactPCI® boards for industrial communication MEN products are also a
­perfect choice for applications in industrial automation as well as in trains, ships, buses or similar vehicles.
For realizing additional I/O or PC functions you can choose from a number of carrier cards from the MEN product
range. The mezzanine slots are based on M-Module™, PMC and XMC mezzanine standards. They offer flexible
and individual extension of analog and binary I/O, fieldbus interfaces, networks or graphics. Using PCI mini cards
or standard PC cards opens up the whole world of current notebook PC extensions, making it a fast and easy way
to extend the range of applications.

MEN also offers a full range of 6U CompactPCI® single-board computers on different performance levels based on
Intel and PowerPC® architectures for rugged industrial and embedded applications.
In addition to state-of-the-art PC functionality, all CPU boards feature industrial functions such as real-time clock,
or watchdogs for temperature and voltage control. Memory and mass storage configuration possibilities include
standard DRAM system memory plus non-volatile SRAM or FRAM, CompactFlash®, NAND Flash and onboard
hard disks for program storage. Many cards also include mezzanine slots for flexible and individual extension by
further I/O functions.
MEN CompactPCI® solutions are completed by a huge number of industrial I/O boards based on the M-Module™,

6U VMEbus Boards
MEN offers a full range of 3U and 6U VME and VME64 single-board computers on different performance levels
based on Intel® and PowerPC® architectures for rugged industrial and embedded applications.
In addition to state-of-the-art PC functionality, all CPU boards feature industrial functions such as real-time clock,
or watchdogs for temperature and voltage control. Memory and mass storage configuration possibilities include
standard DRAM system memory plus non-volatile SRAM or FRAM, CompactFlash®, NAND Flash and onboard
hard disks for program storage. Many cards also include mezzanine slots for flexible and individual extension
by further I/O functions.
MEN VMEbus solutions are completed by a huge number of industrial I/O boards based on the M-Module™,
PMC, XMC and PC-MIP ANSI/IEC mezzanine standards. A growing number of boards are equipped with FPGAs
for implementation of further application-specific functions or 2eSST for a fast data throughput.

Power Supplies for 19” Systems
MEN offers different power supplies to meet the requirements regarding the different voltage inputs in mobile
­environments. The PSU (power supply unit) is controlled by a microprocessor which supervises three external
inputs and three external outputs as well as voltage and temperature. Thanks to the onboard intelligence, the PSU
can also act as an SMBus slave and communicate with the CPU board via the backplane. This allows the PSU to
power-on the system at a programmed date or it allows the CPU card to make status polls with regard to error
messages, time-out, on/off, for example.
The pluggable power supplies in single Eurocard format (3U) were designed for use in 19” systems and need two
or three slots (8 or 12 HP).

SA-Adapters™ – Serial Line Drivers for MEN Boards
SA-Adapters™ are small universal boards providing the physical interfaces for legacy serial I/O, fieldbus interfaces and other small I/O functions. One serial line is provided per adapter, which can be plugged directly to
the CPU board as a mezzanine. Alternatively, the adapter can be connected to the front panel via ribbon cable.
The SA concept allows to add additional I/O interfaces to many of MEN's CPU boards, enhancing flexibility with
regard to the line transceivers and isolation requirements.

SA-Adapters™ can be used on the majority of MEN's CompactPCI®, CompactPCI® PlusIO, CompactPCI® Serial,

Housings and Turnkey Systems
The following pages show examples of individual packaging solutions as well as three different standard housings
that can be used as evaluation platforms together with our 3U CompactPCI® product range – from a PowerPC®
5200 based F12N consuming 1 W up to an Intel ®Core 2 Duo SBC consuming 47 W.
The ultra-small CompactPCI® system 0701-0046 for example can either be used as a desktop device, being
­equipped with support feet. Or it can be mounted on a wall. The 32-bit/33-MHz backplane has three vertical slots
for 3U Eurocards, with the system slot located on the right.
The conduction cooling housing 0701-0054 gives the user completely new application possibilities. This housing
absorbs the heat generated by up to 40 W power dissipation without difficulty – and without the need for separate
cooling. The standard CompactPCI® boards are fitted into a special "CCA" frame (conduction cooled assembly)
and inserted into the system which provides three CompactPCI® slots for one CPU board with a side card and one
I/O board, as well as a PSU slot.
The Hybrid System Rack 0701-0056 is a basic system that allows the configuration with both CompactPCI®
Serial and CompactPCI® cards. It offers an uncomplicated and cost-effective migration solution. The 8-slot hybrid
backplane in this configuration does not need a bridge or an active logic. The four slots on the left are designed
for 32-bit CompactPCI® and rear I/O on P2. The four slots on the right are reserved for CompactPCI® Serial. The
CompactPCI® PlusIO system slot is the fourth slot from the left. Either a standard CompactPCI® 2.0 or a PICMG
2.30 CompactPCI® PlusIO CPU board can be used in this slot.
Whenever required we define and suggest individual packaging tailored to the needs of the application in terms of
performance, functionality and environmental conditions. Only a perfect knowledge of the final application allows
to configure the optimum system from the board-level content to power management, including ­appropriate
testing according to CE and environmental qualification.
A small-footprint system, for example, can just be built around a 2-slot backplane and a pluggable PSU. Programs
and applications may be stored directly on the CPU board in a CompactFlash or on a hard disk instead of using
extra space inside the housing. Even if Intel®-based, such a system can be installed without forced air cooling,
­designed to work in a -40 to +85°C temperature environment. Passive heat sinks take the power dissipation of the
critical parts out of the system.
Larger systems can for example be equipped with backplanes of up to eight slots or more, also supporting rear
I/O via the backplane. Appropriate ventilation, power supplies and additional room for mass storage devices is
considered depending on the application.
Depending on the board combination in the system, power supplies can reach from a low-cost firmly installed ATX
up to pluggable models, delivering between 35 W up to 350 W and more. Depending on the type of ­application,
the technical requirements for the PSU may be different in terms of voltage input ranges, AC or DC supply,
­safety aspects (monitoring, self diagnosis) and environment (operating temperature, shock, vibration, humidity).
For handling and maintenance purposes it may be necessary to use pluggable PSUs.
More complex systems are built for example to support multiprocessing or hardware clusters based on a variety
of tailored backplanes. For safety-critical and mission-critical applications we configure any kind of redundancy
structure like 2oo3 or 2oo4 systems.

MEN's display computers (DC) are based on the DC1 which was the first member of a whole family of display
computers. They are all based on a very flexible modular configuration concept. The DC1 is the basis for all
customized DC versions.
As rugged, fanless and maintenance-free panel PCs, MEN's display computers are used for harsh, mobile and mission-critical applications in transportation, avionics, medical engineering and industrial automation. The robust
stainless enclosure is protected against violent impacts and designed for a safeguarded use in direct contact with
humans, e.g., for infotainment purposes in trains, public buses or airplanes, for human-machine-interfaces, for
video control and ticketing.
The XC2 is a carrier board designed for intelligent display solutions (as the DC1) and offers one ESMexpress®
slot that can be used together with Intel®-based ESMexpress® modules. The XC2 provides physical interfaces and
connectors for nearly all of the modern serial standard I/Os routable from the ESMexpress® connectors to the
carrier board as defined in the specification. The functionality of all connectors depends on the ESMexpress®
module used. The XC2 complies with the EN 50155, class Tx railway standard in order to be used for rugged
infotainment applications in trains, undergrounds and public buses.

Rugged Box Computers
MEN Mikro Elektronik® is taking its expertise in the requirements of harsh and extreme applications also to
­complete systems. The RC1 is our first rugged box computer and a member of the MIPIOS® family of products.
This fanless and maintenance-free box computer was specially designed for mobile applications. It has a robust
220x130x86mm aluminum enclosure, complies with EN 50155 and IP67, and has an E1 approval of the German
Federal Motor Transport Authority. All I/O interfaces of the RC1 are accessible on robust 8-pin M12 connectors
at the front. Through the use of Intel®'s Atom processor the user gets a guarantee for fast performance and a
minimum availability of 7 years.
The RC1 is available in two standard varieties, depending on the type of application: one version without and
one with a 3.5“ 4:3 color display with a resolution of 640x480 pixels, 262,144 colors and touch functionality,
for service purposes. Solid wall-mounting facilities make the unit resist even violent impacts.
Its field of application extends from hot, dry and dusty up to extremely humid or cold environments. In the mobile
arena, this includes commercial vehicles like agricultural or construction machines, but also trains, buses or cable
cars. The RC1 can also be used in the fields of avionics, medical engineering and industrial automation.
What is MIPIOS?
MIPIOS® is a family of extremely rugged modular computer components such as box computers, Ethernet
­switches, PSUs and I/O devices. The units were designed for wall mounting (optionally DIN-rail mounting) – even
in extreme and mobile applications – and communicate with each other using Ethernet. The stainless aluminum
enclosure is dust- and waterproof according to IP67 and protects against violent impacts. With a maximum
power dissipation of 10 W, MIPIOS® products are always fanless; conduction cooling brings the heat to the outside of the housing. All electronic components are soldered to withstand shock and vibration and prepared for
conformal coating. MIPIOS® complies with the EN 50155, class Tx railway standard, and runs in a -40 to +70°C
operating temperature environment.

Rugged Ethernet Switches
Whether in CompactPCI® format or as stand-alone, rack- or DIN-rail-mountable units, MEN Ethernet switches
are an easily customizable, open low-power platform for harsh environments and operating temperatures from
-40 to +85°C.
The rugged Ethernet switches were specifically designed for mobile communication systems. They are fully
­compliant with the EN 50155 railway standard and feature a wide-range power supply (114 to 154 V).
They consume less than 7 W and need no cooling. The PCBs are ready for coating and there are no socketed
­components, hardening the product against shock and vibration.
The switches are available with three types of front connectors (RJ45, M12, D-Sub). The managed models include
their own FPGA-based low-power CPU that integrates the management firmware. In addition, they also support
Power over Ethernet. All of the ports are individually configurable. A service interface is accessible at the front
panel, providing an easy way to configure the switch using an SMB interface on a standard D-Sub connector.
Using a hardware key, a Telnet command line interface or SNMP (Version 3) also makes maintenance very easy,
for example when the switch is used on board a vehicle or in automation applications.

The ESMexpress® Standard has been developed for applications that require high-performance, low-power
­architecture and highly robust electronics to ensure safe and reliable operation even in severe environments, e.g.,
in railways and avionics, industrial automation and medical engineering or mobile applications in general.
The fanless cooling concept of ESMexpress® is prepared for a power dissipation of up to 35 W and supports
both conduction and convection cooling. The CPU PCB is mounted into a frame and completely enclosed in
an ­aluminum housing. If an ESMexpress® module needs additional cooling, the housing is designed for extra
­conduction or ­convection cooling. At the same time it ensures optimum EMC protection for the electronic parts.
To be resistant against shock and vibration, the module is fixed on the carrier card using eight screws and has
a rugged board-to-board connector. The electrical signals are distributed on two 120-pin connectors and are
only defined for the modern serial buses such as PCI Express®, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, SATA, SDVO, LVDS, HD
audio, several utility signals and a single 12V power supply. The pin assignment is fixed so as to guarantee the
i­nterchangeability of ESMexpress® modules.
Its open processor architecture makes ESMexpress® ready for all Intel® platforms as well as PowerPC® CPUs.
And ESMexpress® is compatible with COM Express™. Via an adapter board which complies with the COM.0
Basic Form Factor Type 2 and adapts the mechanics and the pinout, ESMexpress® modules can be used on
COM Express™ ­carrier boards. Vice versa it is possible to prepare carrier boards for both COM Express™ and
ESMexpress® modules.
ESMini™ has identical basic characteristics as ESMexpress®. The first of just two differences is its size.
While ESMexpress® modules are already very compact – measuring 95 x 125 mm –, ESMini™ comes to a mere
95 x 55 mm.
The second difference is the support of FPGA. ESMini™ modules offer all modern serial interfaces via the chipset,
as well as industrial I/O like CAN and UART through the FPGA.
Together with an application-specific carrier board they form a space-saving, semi-custom solution for industrial,
harsh, mobile and mission-critical environments.
For evaluation and development purposes a microATX carrier board is available.

ESM™ Embedded System Modules
ESM™ Embedded System Modules are complete computers on a module (System-On-Module – SOM).
They consist of the hardware (PC or RISC CPU, chip set, memory, I/O) which is not fixed to any applicationspecific function, an FPGA programmed in VHDL code, which provides I/O that is also still independent of a
specific application, and the BSP support – i.e. Linux, Windows® or a real-time operating system.
ESM™ modules are based on PCI. They have two system connectors: J1 has a fixed signal assignment, while J2
is variable depending on the final application-specific configuration of the ESM™ and the carrier board. J2 also
feeds the I/O signals of the functions programmed in the FPGA to the carrier card. Some ESM™ modules include
an additional J3 connector that is used to replace the front I/O connectors to route the signals to the carrier
board or to the backplane of a CompactPCI® or VMEbus system.
ESM™ modules can be used stand-alone, plugged onto a customized carrier card and/or stacked with PCI-104
modules. Serial interface adapters (SA-Adapters™) provide access to additional line drivers on any type of ESM™
carrier board. The FPGA on every ESM™ additionally allows implementation of IP cores tailored to the application.
ESM™ modules have been developed to work also in rugged environments – shock, vibration, drop, resonance,
humidity, chemicals, -40 to +85°C operating temperature.
ESM™ Starter Kits
An ESM™ starter kit allows evaluation of most of the functions of a specific Embedded System Module. The kit
usually consists of the CPU module (the ESM™), an FPGA with additional I/O functions, the carrier card, DRAM
memory, PSU, several cables depending on the ESM™ features, and an adapter for mounting a PCI-104 module.
Each ESM™ starter kit provides versatile mounting options and can also be installed in a standard PC.
After evaluation, the design overhead for each application is limited to I/O. Depending on the application and
quantity, it may be necessary to develop a simple carrier card, choose PCI-based standard components, load additional I/O functions into the FPGA, write software drivers for those additional functions, or design a housing.
Carrier board and FPGA IP core design as well as mechanical design and integration services are offered by the
MEN headquarters and by MEN knowledge centers and partners – all over the world.

MEN offers a range of PCI-based mezzanine modules with computer I/O functions such as graphics, Ethernet,
UARTs, FireWire, TTL I/O, memory and fieldbus, complying with PMC and XMC standards.
PMC (PCI Mezzanine Card) is an IEEE mezzanine module standard used to add rather complex I/O ­functionality
independent of the form factor. The VITA Standards Organization later extended the protocol to include
PCI Express® (XMC), processor PMCs and conduction-cooled PMCs.
MEN boards have been developed to work also in rugged environments – qualified or screened regarding shock,
vibration, drop, resonance, humidity, chemicals, and up to -40 to +85°C operating temperature.
MEN boards have a long-term availability of minimum 5 up to 10 years (and longer according to individual
agreements) depending on the components used.

USM™ – Design your own XMC, PMC, M-Module™
USM main M-Module and PMC
USM™ Universal Submodules make common mezzanine modules more flexible than ever. A "main” PMC, XMC
or M-Module™ gets its specific function through the IP cores implemented inside the FPGA. This function can be
changed at any time through implementation of different IP cores. The corresponding line drivers are realized
on the USM (Universal Submodule) which is simply plugged on the respective main module. The same USM may
be used on M-Modules™, PMC modules or XMCs and conduction-cooled PMC modules. A new design is then
­limited to the USM module and the FPGA content and therefore saves development time and costs. The Nios® soft
­processor implemented in the Cyclone® II FPGA by Altera® provides local intelligence where needed. I/O signals are
led to a 50-pin HP D-Sub connector at the front.

M-Modules™ Mezzanine I/O
M-Modules™, ANSI-standardized since 1997, are a mezzanine standard perfectly suited for adding any kind of
real-world I/O to the system in a flexible way. M-Modules™ are modular I/O extensions for all types of industrial
computers, from embedded systems up to high-end workstations.
The M-Module™ interface – a fast asynchronous parallel interface – offers sophisticated functions like 32-bit data
bus, burst transfers up to 100 Mbytes/s, DMA and trigger capabilities. M-Modules™ offer direct front-panel connection
rather than requiring a separate adapter panel with ribbon-cable connections. This provides a clean path for ­sensitive
signals without loss of data or signal quality – using, for example, shielded D-Sub connectors and coax cables.
A carrier board in double Eurocard format, for instance, can accommodate up to four M-Modules™.
Typical M-Module™ functionality comprises instrumentation, process I/O, motion, robotics, various general-purpose
analog and binary I/O as well as all common fieldbus interfaces.
MEN boards have been developed to work also in rugged environments – qualified or screened regarding shock,
vibration, drop, resonance, humidity, chemicals, and up to -40 to +85°C operating temperature. M-Modules™ have
a long-term availability of minimum 10 years (and longer according to individual agreements).
