DESCRIPTION:
The IEC ‘Mini Lab’ Signal Generator is a multi purpose and low cost instrument for the
electronics laboratory. The frequency range is limited, however it provides the technician or
student with a very convenient multi purpose instrument.
The ‘Mini Lab’ includes two analogue meters scaled from 0 to 20, that can be selected to be
either voltmeters or ammeters. In either mode, each meter has 2 ranges. Also includes a
well regulated power source from 1.5 to 12V.DC. at 1 amp, a signal generator (1Hz to
10kHz) and an audio amplifier with inbuilt speaker. The signal generator output is
selectable to be either sine or square, the output level is fixed at 10V.p/p and the maximum
permissible current is 50mA.

The new curricula requires electronics to be taught including the application of
‘Photonics’. To provide this equipment, IEC developed this low cost and more basic
equivalent to the famous ‘Tri Mode’ high power signal generator. This small
instrument can be used for general electronics but particularly with the IEC
‘Electronics and Photonics’ experiment set (EM1765-001).

Input:
12V.AC or DC by PlugPak (mains adaptor) 50/60 Hz. at 0.5A max.
Protection:
Internal fuse. 1Amp.
DC METERS: These two DC analogue meters are very useful for monitoring circuits on
any of the Electronics or Photonics Trainer Kits. Using the small slide switches provided,
the two meters must be selected to be either volts or amps, then the range must be selected to
be either 0-2V, 0-20V or 0-20mA or 0-200mA.. The meters are then connected into
circuits like normal bench meters.
POWER SUPPLY:
For general electronic work, DC power output is provided.
DC. Output: Regulated output, fully adjustable from 1.5 to 12 Volts DC at 1A max..
Regulation:
Better than 20mV from no load to 500mA.
Ripple:
Better than 10mV RMS.at 500mA.
SIGNAL GENERATOR:
Range:
1.0 Hz. to 10kHz. over 2 ranges of 1 to 100Hz and 100 to 10kHz.
Modes:
Waveform can be selected to be either Sine or Square.
Distortion:
Sine.
Within 2%
Square.
Rise time less than 1 microsecond at 10V. peak to peak.
Output:
Fixed at 10V. peak to peak. Maximum current 50mA.
The output is current limited by the impedance of the applied load up to a maximum of
50mA. Current limit is automatic by reducing the output voltage as the current rises.
AUDIO AMPLIFIER:
The IEC ‘Mini Lab’ is complete with an inbuilt speaker and is
provided with a volume control. There is a choice of 2 input sensitivities and an output that
can supply an oscilloscope. The CRO waveform may be observed without the distortion
normally associated with having the speaker connected.
Inputs:
15mV.max. via 3.5mm phone jack. OR 150mV max. via 4mm socket terminals.
Output: To oscilloscope (CRO) via 4mm socket terminals. Internal speaker is always
connected but cannot distort the signal to the CRO.
IMPORTANT NOTE:: If the gain control of the amplifier is turned to ‘full gain’, a small
signal may be heard from the speaker that changes with the signal generator frequency. This
faint sound is caused by unwanted pickup of electrical ‘noise’ within the wiring of the
instrument. There is no internal connection from the signal generator to the audio amplifier.
If it is intended for the amplifier to monitor the output of the signal generator, the
input to the amplifier must be connected by cables to the output of the signal generator.
The output level from the signal generator is 10V.p/p, so the amplifier volume control must
be set VERY close to minimum to avoid distortion. Do not over-drive the audio amplifier
and the internal speaker to distortion.
