Element Clothing Hosts PreChristmas Shopping Night
The women of East Cork were out in force for Element Clothing’s
pre-Christmas shopping night at Market Green, Midleton. Top
models Emer O’Sullivan & Vivienne Kelly from Lockdown
Modelling Agency kept everyone entertained, displaying this season’s key pieces, with a particular emphasis on dressing for the
Christmas party season.
Guests were treated to Kir Royale cocktails and delicious sweet
and savoury canapØs, as well as great discounts on all stock for the
night.
It’s a busy time for the team at Element. They recently participated in the Irish Cancer Society Fashion Show in the Rochestown
Park Hotel, which had a fabulous turnout.
The shop was also involved with this month’s fundraiser for Fr
O’Neill’s Camogie Club which saw the very popular ex-Cork player, Mags Finn, receive a fabulous makeover by stylist, Avril Geary.
Over 300 women were treated to wonderful cookery, flower and
make-up demonstrations, as well as getting great style and fashion
tips.
Having just launched its website, www.lola.ie, selling contemporary women’s clothing throughout Ireland, this season has certainly been a hectic, but positive one for Element.

SUPER VALU COMBATS
BUDGET-CUT BLUES IN
CORK SCHOOLS:
267K Worth of sports Equipment DONATED THROUGH
KIDS IN ACTION
24th November 2008: Primary school children in Cork have
received 267,000 worth of brand new sports equipment, donated
by local SuperValu stores and their customers through the Kids in
Action programme. A total 1.2 million worth of sports and active
play equipment has been donated by SuperValu in 2008 to primary
schools nationwide.
Launched in 2006, SuperValu Kids in Action is an annual initiative which aims to encourage children to get involved in sport and
active play, while educating parents and children alike on the
importance of a balanced diet. The programme is aimed at children aged between five and twelve years.
In 2008, 83% of primary schools across the country took part in
the initiative - which was supported by both the Irish Sports
Council and the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute. Since the
launch of SuperValu Kids in Action, 3.5million worth of sports
equipment has been delivered to schools nationwide.
Between January and March, SuperValu customers in Cork collected vouchers for Kids in Action with every 10 spent in store.
To further promote healthy eating, double vouchers were given for
all fruit and vegetable purchases. As part of the programme, in
conjunction with the INDI, SuperValu also arranged for a nutritionist to visit participating schools and engage the children directly in discussions around healthy food options.
Said Donal Horgan, Managing Director, SuperValu: This extra
surge in resources for Irish primary schools demonstrates a real
community effort for the benefit of children in Cork and all
involved should be highly commended for their efforts. SuperValu
is delighted to be able to give a little back to the community and
help encourage a healthy lifestyle for primary school children.
SuperValu Kids in Action will be back again in January 2009, with
lots of new initiatives for participants to look forward too.

Have you seen this Bracelet?
On Saturday night November 15th last a young lady visited
Clashmore Village and at some stage during the evening she lost a silver bracelet with Swarovski Crystals - this item of jewellery is of
great sentimental value to its owner. It is believed the bracelet may
have been lost between the grotto and the church or in one of the local
pubs. If you have found this bracelet or know of anyone who might
have please phone the following number where the worried owner is
waiting to hear from you [087] 6332323

for the future.
Open Invitation
Kinsalebeg community group would like to issue an open invitation
to all members of the community to the official opening and blessing
of the extension to Kinsalebeg Hall on Thursday next 27th November
at 2.45pm in Kinsalebeg Hall. Light refreshments will be served, Pat
Tobin will be along to provide the music and all are welcome.
Clashmore - Kinsalebeg through to the Semi Final
A twenty six year famine came to a welcome end on Sunday
November 16th in Ardmore as a very determent Clashmore Kinsalebeg Senior Football team, proved themselves worthy of a
place in semi final of the Senior Football Championship, when they
beat Brickey Rangers in a trilling game of football.
Sean Fleming, Karl O Keeffe, Declan Allen, Brian O Halloran, and
Cathal O Keeffe all contributed to Clashmore score board of 2-10 to
Brickey Rangers 1-6. There was never any doubt- this team has talent
and Sunday’s game was just the confidence boost they needed well
done all!
"WWW" comes to Clos Naomh Mochua
"Nestled in a cosy corner over looking Clashmore Village "Clos
Naomh Mochua" is a just one of the many very successful housing
projects around the country - the brain child of Fr Pat Cogan.
"Respond" is presently Ireland’s largest housing association, providing over 4500 units of accommodation nation-wide. However
"Respond" goes far beyond putting a roof over peoples heads it also
looks after those and cares for the needs of those who live within.
Responds latest project has been the introduction of "I.T in to the
community"- this is a pilot programme at present. It allows Respond
Housing Association residents access to computer and internet facilities in their local community building, by providing a computer with
internet access.
This facility will allow residents safe and secure access to the web,
research projects, Obtain information, check personal emails, bank
accounts, pay bills or just browse!
Initially Respond has chosen just five housing developments to pilot
this project and Clos Naomh Mochua is one of these. On Wednesday
night the team from Respond- Denis Shanahan, Fr Pat Cogan OFM
CEO - Respond Housing Association, Margaret Fenton and Marion
Murphy were in Clashmore to roll out this project and brief residents
and all present on the "Mo Bhaile" project which is also part of the
scheme.
Respond are fully aware of the importance of good IT skills in securing employment and in education, they are also aware of the huge
benefits of a website and this is where the "Mo Bhaile" project comes
in. Respond communities are asked to create a website for their estate
allowing them to make information about their neighbourhood available on the Internet. Residents will be given every help and support
from the Respond IT team.
We are all well aware of the wonderful working being done by the
Clos Naomh Mochua residents association - with special mention of
the very successful after school project. The fact that it has been one
of the chosen five for this latest project - shows the trust and confidence the respond team has for this progressive group of people. Of
course no social evening would be complete without a chat and some
light refreshments and once again the ladies did them selves proud!
Congratulations to all concerned in securing this wonderful facility
for Clashmore, we hope it will be of huge benefit to everyone.

Whiskey flows once more at "The Still"
In recent years our beautiful little village has been struck blow after
blow and just when we had almost lost all hope - a ray of light
returned last weekene as the very popular "Old Still" pub reopened for
business. The warm welcome of the fire, a fresh coat of paint and the
familiar smiling faces behind the bar- within a few hours- patrons
were comfortably reinstated and it was as if it had never closed!
Welcome back Liz, Joe, Mary Anne and all the staff, it’s wonderful to
have this much-loved pub back in business again.
Happy Birthday Tommy
This week we are extending birthday greetings to Tommy Fennell, of
Fennell plant-hire in Leamybrien. Last weekend family and friends of
the very popular Tommy managed to pull off the surprise of a lifetime
with a surprise 50th party for him at Bridgie Terries Congratulations
Tommy and best wishes from all your Clashmore friends.
Clashmore/Kinsalebeg Juvenile GAA.
Under 12 Floodlit Football. This competition was played in
Clashmore last week. We played two matches. One against Ardmore,
which was a good match and we won by 4 points. The second game
was played against Cappoquin, which we won well. We now go on to
play in the Division 1 Final.
School Games. It is a credit to the teachers and mentors of the schools
in the parish that all three schools took part in their respective
Football Finals during the past week. Ballycurrane’s match ended in a
draw at full time. Extra time had to be played with the result remaining the same. Unfortunately Kinsalebeg lost to Grange, but
Clashmore beat Ring by two points. The Club is delighted to see such
work being done with such good results. These young boys and girls
will be our players of the future.

PUBLIC OPEN DAY FOR ’STATE
OF THE ART ENTERPRISE
CENTRE’, YOUGHAL
An impressive 600,000 state of the art enterprise centre aimed at
nurturing indigenous small business will open for public viewing
on Friday 28th November 2008 from 2.00pm - 7.00pm in
St. Mary’s College, Emmet Place, Youghal.
Offering over 3,500 ft of dedicated office space, this enterprise
project is designed to provide a supportive environment to local
enterprises, while encouraging them to innovate and grow. Once
fully operational the centre will house in excess of 14 small local
companies.
The centre is designed to maximise the provision of space for
micro-enterprise start-ups, and is aimed at fostering an enterprise
culture in Youghal and its environs. Crucial to this project is the
competitive pricing structure - recognition that initial start-up
phase is often the most difficult task for every business especially
in today’s current economic environment.
A key feature of the facility will be the inclusion of eight ’hot
desks’ - individual work stations which can be rented from only
55(+vat) per week . A ’hot desk’ is the ideal environment for
many start-ups. Shared business facilities can be accessed through
renting a desk at a very affordable rate, thereby lessening the risk
associated with capital expenditure. ’Hot desks’ also provide a
temporary solution to larger businesses with over-flow problems
at busy periods.
Facilities also include an array of 1, 2 and 3 person ’own-door’
offices, fully furnished to the highest of standards. All rooms will
have access to full presentation equipment and broadband, and
shared reception services. The impressive hi-spec boardroom suitable for meetings or as a training facility has capacity for up to
ten people.
Town Clerk Liam Ryan welcomed the opening of Enterprise
Youghal commenting: "Youghal Town Council is keen to develop
home-grown business to fuel local economic growth.
Fundamentally it is about growing local business in order to promote the employment of local people."
Funding partners in the project include an array of organisations:
Youghal Town Council, Cork County Council, Enterprise Ireland,
Pobail, South East Cork Area Development, South Cork
Enterprise Board and Youghal Credit Union.
Meeting rooms will also be available to any group, business or
general public for ’once-off’ meetings or presentations at an agreed
rate. The Centre will open for public viewing from 2.00 pm - 7.00
pm on Friday 28th November 2008.

Under 16 League
Youghal 18 pts. - Sundays Well 0
Our under 16’s continued their good start to the league when they
travelled to Musgrave Park to take on Sunday’s Well recently.
Youghal were quick to settle down in this game and had the better
of the early exchanges after some good running by Danny O’Brien
and Aaron Daly. Newcomer Sean Meredith scored a great try near
the corner flag to give the seasiders a deserved lead.
The home team pressed hard for an equaliser but it was the
seasiders who extended their lead with a 40 metre penalty kick
from Dylan Power. This made the half time score 8 pts to nil in
Youghal’s favour.
In the second half Youghal wrapped up the points with further tries
from Dylan Power and winger Andrew Curtin to run out deserving
winners. Best for Youghal were Danny O’Brien and Jack Hall in
the forwards, while newcomers Sean Meredith and Andrew Curtin
tried hard in the back line.
Under 14 League
Youghal 12 pts. - Muskerry 5 pts.
Our under 14’s travelled to Muskerry recently and followed up on
their recent big win over Old Christians with another fine win over
a tough Muskerry XV. Youghal had first half tries from Killian
Ansbro and James Morley while Ciaran O’Brien added the conversion points for one of the tries.
In the second half Muskerry had a very good try to narrow
Youghal’s lead but what looked like a perfectly legitimate try from
Killian Ansbro was ruled out for an earlier infringement. There
was no further scoring in the match with Youghal holding on for a
narrow but deserved win. Best for Youghal were James Morley,
Killian Ansbro, Andres Long, Elton Ruxton and Conor Finn. The
under 14’s next game is away to Midleton. Anyone interested in
playing at under 14 or under 16 level can contact Ivan Flynn on

YOUGHAL GAA NEWS
No matches to report on this week as the season draws to a close.
The Intermediate Hurlers have qualified for the league final where
they face Blarney in the decider but it looks like this game might
not take place until 2009 as Blarney are still involved in
Championship and available dates are very thin on the ground.
The fundraising committee have had a busy few weeks organising
a Car Boot Sale in the Club. The first of which took place on
Sunday last the 23rd. Stall holders started to arrive from 7:30am
to get the best vantage point with the first bargain hunters following shortly after. Over 500 people waded through the 40 plus stalls
that were set out in the Hall and braved the horrific weather to
barter with the 10 stalls set up outside. It was disappointing that
the weather was against the stall holders that braved the elements
and some of these packed up early, but on went the poking rustling
and haggling in the Hall until 4: 30. Organisers were happy
enough with the Day and Stall Holders seemed content enough
with proceedings and expressed their admiration for the facilities
as they are normally stood in muck and puddles at other venues. It
was a trial run to revive what was one of the biggest Car Boot
Sales in Munster at one time when it was held in Sweetfield where
Perks now stands and it is hoped to make this a Monthly Market.
The next date for the Market is January 11th but there is a
Christmas Craft Fair booked in for December 14th. Stalls for this
will be at a cost of 30 Euro and advertisements for same will be
appearing over the next couple of weeks. There will be a limited
number of stalls available for this event and further details can be
got from 086 3800052. Booking is essential as already there are
craftspeople putting their names down and no advertisement has
been done. Thank you to all who helped out on the Day as over 20
Club Members gave of their time through the Day martialing traffic and stall holders, manning the gate and providing much needed refreshments for punters on a bitterly cold Day.
PHIL COULTER
The Club are hosting the Rotary Concert featuring Phil Coulter on
Thursday night next the 27th of November. Mr. Coulter is one of
the biggest stars in the Country and it is hoped that a large crowd
will turn out to support both He and the very worthy Rotary Club.
Year after Year the Rotary Club bring an International star to
Youghal which is always very well supported. Tickets for the show
are on Sale at the usual outlets and your support is vital to the
endeavours of the Rotary Club.
JUVENILE CLUB
After a very long Year the Juvenile Club will host their A.G.M. on
Friday night next the 28th of November at 7:30pm in Club Aras.
Your support for this is crucial and all members and coaches are
requested to attend as planning for next Year will be the main point
of discussion.
DOWN MEMORY LANE
The hunt for a suitable piece of land was now underway and 1899
saw the once famous Youghal Cricket Club become defunct and
seeing the potential in this field Club officers opened negotiations
with the trustees of the Cricket Club for the use of the grounds at
Copperalley. The property situated at the Northern end of Town
consisted of four acres, three roods and twentysix perches and was
owned by Miss Avis Hilda Bennett of Castledouglas in Scotland
and was part of the Allen Estate. With the good will and support
of Dr. Murphy and Francis Ronayne who were Trustees of the
Cricket Club negotiations on the transfer of the tenancy agreement
were undertaken, but the owner of the land was very reluctant to
negotiate with the Gaelic Club. It is true to say that the Association
in the early Days did not endear itself to the upper class or the
absentee Landlords. To get over this problem Dr. Murphy agreed
to retain until his death some connection with the property for the
sole purpose of receiving rent from the Club and thus leaving the
youghal Gaelic Club as unofficial tennants of Copperalley.
Next up is the early 1900 s and further dips into the History Books
will follow.

SANTA SET TO MAKE A
SPLASH IN YOUGHAL!
Youghal is set to sparkle this
Saturday 29th November 2008
with the switching on of the
town’s Christmas lights.
It
marks the opening of the 2nd
Annual "I Believe .." Youghal
Christmas Festival organised by
Youghal Chamber of Tourism &
Commerce.
The highlight of the programme
however promises to be the
sight of Santa sailing into
Youghal’s Quayside from the
North Pole via the Blackwater River on Saturday 6th December
2008.
Speaking in advance of the launch of the Christmas Festival at
Youghal’s Aura’s Leisure Centre, on Tuesday 25th November,
Youghal Chamber President Eddie Irwin commented:
"Our events will be sure to make the run-up to Christmas a far
more enjoyable shopping experience for locals and visitors alike.
With free parking in all our car parks, as well as a wide range of
new restaurants and shops having opened recently in Youghal, we
are confident Youghal can provide everything for the Christmas
Shopper".
The festival kicks off on Saturday 29th November with an array of
activities in the town centre. Events include performances from
Youghal Choral Society, live music and dance performances on
Barry’s Lane, balloon art and face-painting as well as ’Barty’s
Music Show’. Youghal Pipe Band will signal the turning on of the
Christmas Lights.
On Saturday 6th December the quayside in Youghal is the place to
be! Watch Santa arrive on board local Sailing School, Aquatrek’s
new boat ’Nightvision’ before he hops on board the Youghal Fire
Engine en-route to Merrick’s Department Store.
Other highlights of the Festival include the ’Star of Youghal’ competition taking place on Saturday 13th December, organised in
conjunction with Foroige. Taking place all along the North Main
Street and with two categories, primary and teens, and with great
prizes to be won, this competition is sure to generate a wonderful
’buzz’ of excitement on the streets.
So, it certainly looks like Youghal is the place to be this Christmas
season. With free parking in all the town car parks, a now with an
even wider range of new shops, and restaurants it seems it’s not
just the kids that will have all their needs catered for in the run up
to this Christmas!
Application forms for the ’Star of Youghal Competition’, along
with full details of the festival are available from Youghal

COOKING THE PERFECT
CHRISTMAS TURKEY
Stuffing
The Christmas turkey experience wouldn’t be the same without a
flavourful stuffing or two. Pan-frying or roasting the stuffing separately, rather than stuffing the bird, is the safest way to make a
stuffing because, in an unstuffed bird, the hot air of the oven is
able to circulate easily inside the cavity of the bird, reducing the
cooking time, and the possible incidence of bacterial contamination.
If you decide to stuff the body cavity, don t overstuff. Pack the
stuffing in loosely, to allow the hot air to circulate. An alternative
is stuffing the smaller cavity of the neck-end of the bird. Always
be sure add the weight of the bird and the stuffing together to calculate the correct cooking time.
TIP
Just put the stuffing in buttered, ovenproof dishes and cook for an
appropriate length of time. That way you save on cooking time, eat
safely - and get a nice crisp crust on your stuffing.
Cooking guidelines
Cover the bird loosely in foil before placing it in the oven. This
will allow the air to circulate and ensure even cooking without
overbrowning. Remove the foil for the last 40 minutes of cooking
time to allow the skin to brown.
Fan-assisted ovens tend to cook food more quickly because of
increased air circulation. Be sure to take this into account and
check the manufacturer’s guidelines.
To test to see if the bird is completely cooked, insert a clean skewer into the thickest part of the thigh. If the juices run clear the
turkey is cooked. If the juices are still pink cook for a little longer.
Allow the turkey to stand for at least 15 to 20 minutes before carving.
Remember on Christmas Day power may be reduced slightly
because of a surge on the grid. This and regular opening and closing of the oven door will also reduce the heat, so you may need to
adjust cooking time accordingly.
When roasting your bird, try putting it upside down on its breast
so the juices from the back and legs run down to the breast keeping it moist.
If you’re cooking a free-range bird, consider cooking the legs
(which cook more slowly) separately from the breast. The legs of
free-range birds tend to be tougher and cooking it this way means
that you won’t end up with dried-out breast and cooked legs - or
perfectly cooked breast and raw legs.
Check the FSA website for their poultry cooking timings calculator and for more advice.

Christmas Fruitcake Biscuits

450g (16oz) Nuts, (Hazel, Brazil, Pecans), chopped
340g (12oz) Sugar
225g (8oz) Margarine
225g (8oz) Red GlacΠCherries, cut in quarters
225g (8oz) Green GlacΠCherries, cut in quarters
225g (8oz) Pitted Dates, chopped
2 Eggs ,1 tsp Baking Powder,1 tsp Cinnamon ,‰ tsp Salt
In a large bowl, cream the butter, gradually adding sugar, beat until
light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Combine the flour, salt,
baking powder, and cinnamon. Gradually add to creamed mixture,
beating well. Fold in remaining ingredients, to produce a stiff batter. Drop teaspoonfuls of the batter onto a lightly greased
baking tray.
Preheat oven to 180 C: 350 F: Gas 4.
Bake for 10-14 minutes or until lightly browned.
Allow to cool for a minute, remove biscuits to wire racks to cool.
Christmas tree cupcakes:
Have a bit of fun when decorating them - these are sprinkled with
edible glitter that’s available from many cookshops,You could try
any number of small Christmas decorations, such as a sprig of
holly (I recommend you don’t eat it though!). The cakes can be
made in advance and frozen; you’ll just need to defrost and decorate before you serve them."
175g caster sugar
175g unsalted butter, at room temperature
125g self-raising flour
50g cocoa powder
For the Vanilla Icing
200g unsalted butter, at room temperature
400g icing sugar, sifted
100g dark chocolate, melted
3 large eggs
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Beat together the sugar
and butter, using an electric mixer or food processor until it is
light and fluffy. Give this plenty of time, as the creamier the mixture, the lighter the cakes will be. Add 1 egg at a time with a
spoonful of flour to stop the mixture from curdling. Sieve the
remaining flour with the cocoa into the cake mixture and beat
briefly to combine. Spoon the cake mixture into 12 muffin cases
sitting in a muffin tin. Place in the oven for 20 minutes, until the
cakes have risen and are lightly golden.Remove from the oven
and cool on a wire rack. While the cakes are cooling, beat together the butter and icing sugar until it is light and creamy. Beat in
the chocolate. Place in a piping bag with a wide star nozzle, pipe
a generous swirl on top of each cupcake and decorate. If using a
food processor to make the cake, then it is worth adding 1tsp
baking powder to the mixture to ensure the cake rises nicely

STRESS FREE SHOPPING
Stress-free shopping is that an oxymoron?
New research shows that it s women who are most stressed out by
Christmas stressed women spend more than 48 hours shopping
in the building up to Christmas more time than they spend enjoying themselves. Despite half saying that it was their least favourite
task, women shoulder the burden of Christmas, trying to please the
whole family.
However the research shows that 47 million people across the
UK would rather have more family time and forgo some present if
it meant less hassle on the High Street.
Here s a list of helpful hints to ease the stress of Christmas.
1. Start shopping early and spread your spending.
2. Set a realistic budget and stick to it.
3. Make a list of what you need and who you need to buy for.
4. Shop around and compare prices.
5. Only take with you what you can afford to spend.
6. Get receipts for everything and keep them safe
7. Know your rights on refunds and exchanges
8. Keep gift vouchers safe and make sure you cash them in after
Christmas.
9. If you have anything left over after Christmas, why not buy next
year s cards and wrapping paper in New Year sales?
10. If you do get into debt, try to pay it off as early in the new year
as you can.

YOUGHAL COMMUNITY
BUS UPDATE
We welcome you to browse
at your leisure
By Michael Twomey
The Youghal Community Transport Group wished to express their
appreciation for the recent support they received in their quest to
secure a community bus for the disadvantaged and marginalised in
the town and its environs. The Flag Day on the 18th of October
raised 2,397.23 toward the venture. The work applied by those
who participated is greatly appreciated by the group. The response
to the group’s aim has been very rewarding with Mervyn Scott and
singer, John Schmid raising funds at the Town Hall and Youghal
Vintage Club also donating generously to the cause. Chairperson,
Tony Phelan explained what the next step is for the group. We are
very grateful to everyone. The proceeds of the flag day and the
donations will go directly to the community bus. We will look at
a needs assessment and from there look at prospective partners to
attain our goal. We want to inform the people of the town where
their contributions are going and we feel the best way to achieve
this is by publishing a regular update in the Youghal News, he
said. Tony also wanted to remind readers of the group’s remit. As
opposed to a general use for a community bus he cited a number
of specific users. The bus will be for those with a disability, old
age pensioners and the disadvantaged, young and old.

Stay Safe in the
Kitchen this Christmas
ARE you sure you know how to prepare your turkey this
Christmas? The Food Standards Agency says many of us don’t and
poor preparation and cooking can lead to food poisoning.
December is the worst month of the year for food poisoning.
One in five of all cases can be traced back to under-cooked poultry such as chicken or turkey. So here are some of the things the
FSA wants to warn against:
- Don’t cook the stuffing inside the turkey. This can prevent either
from cooking through properly, so they should be cooked separately instead.
- Do not wash the turkey before cooking: this can spread bacteria
around the kitchen and lead to cross-contamination. Correct cooking will kill all bacteria.
- Ideally a frozen turkey
should be defrosted in the
fridge. Two thirds of people
defrost at room temperature
but again this can cause
problems.
- Cook your turkey for 18 to
20 minutes per pound in
weight. An undercooked
turkey can result in food
poisining.
Christmas dinner is the
biggest meal many of us
will cook. We’re often

preparing meals that we wouldn’t normally make - and we frequently buy more food than we can store in the fridge.
The FSA s head of microbiology says, "The ad campaign
encourages people to think about how to prepare, cook and eat
safely, most food poisoning incidents are easily avoided and with
a little bit of extra thought everybody can enjoy the festive season."
One of the problems is catering for higher numbers, the average Christmas cook will be serving dinner for at least seven
people. And we all seem to be guilty of buying a bigger turkey
than necessary, the average weight of the Christmas bird is 12
pounds and that’s enough to feed up to 18 people, but however big
it is, you should use up all leftovers within 48 hours.
But the agency’s advice is simple: plan a realistic amount of
food, store raw meat in the bottom of your fridge, wash utensils
used on raw meat and make sure the bird is fully thawed and
cooked thoroughly to ensure you stay healthy this Christmas.

Safety at Christmas
Christmas lights are beautiful and much safer than candles, but all
that electricity can cause problems if not used properly. Christmas
lights can get hot enough to burn or ignite other decorations. The
cords can fray, leading to a short. Decorating with lights often
requires the use of a ladder, and improper use could lead to an
injury. Practice ladder safety when you are putting up Christmas
lights. When you put up Christmas lights this season - or holiday
lights during any season - be sure to follow these Christmas light
safety tips.
Choose Christmas lights that have been tested and deemed safe
by a reputable testing laboratory, the best are UL or ETL.
Christmas lights listed as safe by these laboratories will note that
on the packaging. Try to use the cooler-burning "mini" Christmas
lights as opposed to the traditional larger bulbs. The older style
burns much hotter. Only use Christmas lights that have fuses in the
plugs. Inspect each set of Christmas lights - old or new - for damage. Return or throw out any set with cracked or broken sockets,
frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Replace burned out
bulbs promptly with bulbs of the same wattage.
Never hang Christmas lights on a metal tree. The tree can become
charged with electricity and shock someone. The tree can also
short out the Christmas lights and cause a fire.
Want Christmas lights outdoors? Use outdoor Christmas lights.
The packaging will note whether the lights can be used indoors,
outdoors, or both. All outdoor electrical decorations should be
plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). You can
buy portable units for outdoor use, or you can have them permanently installed by an electrician. Use extension cords properly.
Outdoor cords can be used inside or outside. Do not overload
extension cords - they can get hot enough to burn.
Stay away from powerlines or feeder lines (these go from the pole
to the house).Secure outside Christmas lights with insulated holders (never use tacks or nails) or run strings of lights through hooks.
When you leave or go to bed at night, turn off your Christmas
lights. Never pull on a string of Christmas lights, it stresses the
cords and can lead to fraying. Store Christmas lights loosely
wrapped for the same reason.
Safety first when buying toys
"What should I look out for when buying toys?"There are various
safety regulations about toys sold in the EU. These offer some
protection to consumers - and to the children who will be using
these products - but remember that safety
standards alone can’t guarantee the
safe use of toys. That’s where common sense comes into play. Carefully
examine any toy you buy. Bear in
mind that a gift to an older child can
sometimes prove lethal in the hands
of a smaller child. Always respect
age warnings (for example, "Not
suitable for children under three
years old"), and any instructions or
advice on safe use of the toy. This
means, for instance, that a
chemistry set intended for a
10-year-old shouldn’t be
given to a threeyear-old.

Day two of the East Cork Championships will be held in
Carrignavar on 14th December where the overall club results will
be announced. In the meantime the Munster B Championships
will be held in Killeagh on 30th November. We have a good number of athletes entered in this competition and we also have 13 athletes who have qualified for the All Ireland Cross Country
Championships in Bally haise, Cavan on 7th December. Training
for Cross Country will continue Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in
Tower Park at 7pm and there will also be a training session on
Saturday 29th November for those going to Cavan.
EVEN AGE ALL IRELAND CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
TRAMORE RACECOURSE - 23RD NOVEMBER, 2008
Youghal AC had a very successful outing in Tramore winning a
total of 6 All Ireland medals. Jennifer Hennessy and Emily O’
Keefe ran up an age group in the Girls U/12 Cork team. Cork
came third in the inter-county section. Jennifer Hennessy finished
in 35th position and was the fourth scorer on the Cork tean. Emily
was just pipped of a Cork bronze medal as the fifth and sixth Cork
scorers were just in front of her 56th position. Both girls put in very
impressive performances in a huge field. They will both run for
Munster, Cork and club teams in their U/11 age group in Cavan
on 7th December next and should do well.
Fearghal Curtin also running up an age gave a tremendous performance and finished in 11th position winning an individual
medal. He was the third scorer on the Munster team and the second scorer on the Cork team both of which came second thus
securing a further two medals. Fearghal will also run on the
Munster and Cork teams in Cavan in his own age group.
Lorraine Bernard ran in the Cork team in the Girls U/14 team.
Lorraine was assigned a difficult starting gate in the inside, therefore she had a very bad start, but she turned on the style and came
through to finish in 49th place. Lorraine will be no doubt featuring again in Cavan as she runs on the Girls U/15 Club team and
also the Cork team.
Next up was the Girls U/16 all running up an age . The Youghal
team was Emma Hennessy 41st, Emma Flavin 42nd, Ciara
Broderick-Farrell 99th and Patricia Curtin 110th. Both Emma
Hennessy and Emma Flavin won bronze inter-county medals as
Cork came third. The girls ran very well in an extremely high
class field. The girls will now be joined by Lorraine in attempting
to win National honours in Cavan in the U/15 event.
Niamh O’ Regan ran in the Junior Ladies event on the Cork team.
Niamh was the fourth scorer for Cork. Niamh ran a very gruelling
4000 metre race in a class field. Again it shows what great character Niamh has to come out and run for the Cork team despite her
intensive academic committments

EAST CORK CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 1
Youghal AC hosted day one of the East Cork Championships on
Sunday 16th November. Weather conditions were favourable.
Many thanks to Peter and Sally O’ Sullivan who once again generously provided the Club with the use of their land . Thanks also to
all the Committee members and parents who helped lay out the
course and who helped on the day. Youghal AC had a successful
day with the Girls section leading and the Boys section in joint
lead with Midleton AC at the end of the day’s competition. The
club also had a number of athletes who were competing for their
first time and very well done to all these athletes.
The team results were as follows;

Flavin 11th, Catherine Broderick 13th, Niamh Hughes, 14th,

U16 Boys Coaches Step Down - November 21st, 2008
The coaches of the U16 schoolboys team, Eugene Crotty and
Jamie Lawton, step down as coaches of the under 16 team on
Thursday night, Nov. 20th, due to personal reasons.
Jamie, who is only 18, is sitting his leaving cert, and has done an
outstanding job with the team for a person so young. His knowledge of the game and his coaching was outstanding and his departure will leave a void in the team.
The club would like to thank both coaches for the time they put
into the squad and wishes them the best and would like to wish
jamie the best of luck when he sits his leaving cert next June.
The club are inviting any person wishing to coach the team to contact the club or any committee member as it is vital to keep this
team together.

C.I.T 0 - YOUGHAL UNITED 5.
Another comfortable win for united who were always in control of
this game and if the game had gone its course it cold have been a
bigger score line.
CIT should have taken the lead early in the game but David
Kearns made a fine save from the in rushing forward. This gave
Youghal the wake up call they needed and three goals in that first
half saw united take control of the game. Youghal kept up the pressure and two more goals early in the second half was not surprising the way youghal were playing. The home side just had no
answers to united and looked a very poor side. Sean Kenneally
was about to score the 6th goal when the flood lights failed and the
ref had no choice but to abandon the game. It would be surprising
if united did not get all 3 points as they were so far ahead and well
in control.

MSL DIV. 1 EVERTON PARK SAT. NOV. 15TH
EVERTON 0 - YOUGHAL UNITED 0.
The points were shared in this game and both teams can be happy
with that although both might feel they could have got all three.
The first 15 minutes were even enough but Everton came more
into the game and it took three very good saves from Peter Geary
in the united goal to keep them in the game in that first half.
Playing down hill in the second half united slowly got into the
game and started to be the better team but just could not put the
vital finish to the moves. As the half went on one goal would have
done it but with both teams trying it never came and the game
petered out to a scoreless draw.

SKIBEREEN 9 - YOUGHAL UNITED 4
Youghal came up against a very strong skibbereen team as the
result shows but never gave up. Early goals from the home side
were aided with a very strong wind and united were from that
always fighting a uphill battle. Half time 5-1. United did score two
early goals in the second half but a few mistakes were to cost them
and skib went on to score four more to round off what has to be
said a fine display from them.

In every loving memory of my dear husband David,
Late of 1, O Reilly Terrace
Who died on Nov. 19th 2000 - Masses Offered
Eight years on still filled with sorrow, O how I wish I could see you tomorrow.
To hear your voice, your laugh once more, even to argue as we did before.
I often lie awake at night when others are asleep.
I take a walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheeks.
Some people say as time goes by the heartache will subside.
But the pain inside my heart today is the same as the day you died.
Always loved and missed by your wife Pearl.
There is never a waking moment when I don’t think of you.
The way we used to sit and talk and things we used to do.
At family gatherings you were always there telling stories,
full of cheer. Singing songs and having the craic, roaring up the
Rebels, we’ll be back. For no one knows my loss for you
And a few would see me weep. I shed my tears of a broken heart
As I lay me down to sleep.
Sadly missed by your daughter Angeline and
granddaughters Katie and Laura xxx
Gone are the days we used to share
But in our hearts you are always there
The gates of memory will never close
We miss you more than anyone knows
With tender love and deep regret
We who loved you, will never forget
Loved and missed always by your daughter Bridie, son-in-law
John, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
His charming ways and smiling face
Are a pleasure to recall
He had a kindly word for each
And died beloved by all
So much has changed since you’ve been gone
Through ups and downs our lives move on
But as time rolls by one thing remains true
We will always love and remember you
Always remembered by your son Sean and family
Though his smile is gone forever
And his hand I cannot touch
I still have so many memories
Of the Dad I loved so much
His memory is my keepsake
With which I’ll never part
God has him in his keeping
I have him in my heart
Love you always Dad
Sadly missed by your daughter Ann, son-in-law Anthony
and grandchildren
Every time I close my eyes
I see your face so dear
I feel your hands across my cheek
As you wipe away my tears
I hear your voice so soft and sweet
Telling me you are near
And every time I need someone
I know that you’ll be there
Love always Dad.
Loved and remembered by your daughter Pearl,
son-in-law Mike, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Remember him with a smile today
He was not one for tears
Reflect instead on the memories
Of all the happy years
Recall to mind the way he spoke
And all the things he said
His strength, his stance, the way he walked
Remember these instead.
Always loved by Sharon, Michael, Chloe and Amy
Eight years have passed without you, the saddest I have known.
The special things you did for me that only I have known.
I thought I knew what heartache was, but I had not a clue.
I found out the hard way Dad, the day that I lost you.
To me you were one in a million, thoughtful, kind and true.
You will never be forgotten Dad, I thought the world of you
Always loved and missed by your daughter, Catherine,
partner Ger, grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer,
Aisling, Ali and great granddaughter Lucy.
I treasure all the memories
In which you’ve played a part
From the first I can remember
Until we had to part
A loving nature, a heart of gold,
The best father this world could hold
A laugh, a joke, a pint or two
Dad, that is how I remember you.
Loved and missed always by your daughter Aileen and Mike

Our lives are so much different now,
Sometimes even new,
But a special place within our hearts,
Is always kept for you.

NEW BOAT EXTENDS
AQUATREK’S VISION
By Christy Parker
Aquatrek, Youghal’s excellent sail training and leisure service
unveiled Nightvision,’ the latest addition to its fleet, amidst a wintry chill at its base at Nealon’s Quay on November 22nd.
The Excalibur Rib was designed and built by Joe Collam of Cork
company Gale Force ventures. Joe is naval architect with 15 years
of Rib design experience. Aquatrek founders John Innes and John
Griffin developed and co-ordinated the advance onboard electronics themselves.
In appearance a blue & yellow hued glamour craft, Nightvision is
a seriously capable and highly advanced vessel. With an estimated value of 65,000, it boasts two, twin controlled 75 hp engines,
modified slightly to hit a top speed of 38 knots.
Built to carry four, seated crew, the safety attributes meet all
recruitments for Marine Department P6 (Passenger) Licence. "Her
two electric pumps can shift 4,000 litres of water an hour, as well
as a manual pump," says John Innes. A tacho system enables
engine trimming to allow the craft’s hull to rise or dip according to
conditions, thus contributing to fuel economy, comfort and safety
Hydraulic steering is facilitated by a twin tank fuel system that
carries a total of 220 litres, giving a 160-mile sailing range, with
facility to carry spare fuel also. A hand held chart plotter doubles
as an extra onboard guidance tool alongside a built-in colour chart
topper, with radar overlays.
The more scientific strata of safety features includes VHF DSC
radio, magnetic compass, colour depth sounder and, most impressive and of all a top radar system. Digital Selective Calling, which
operates like a text messaging system, automatically informs
Coastguard services and all craft in the area similarly equipped of
the boats exact position once a button is pressed. A ’killcord device
attaches each passenger or crew member to the boat and immediately shuts down the engines should he or she fall overboard.
Aquatrek acquired Nightvision on a double incentive. "Its
immensely important for our Advanced Powerboat Course, which
is proving every popular," John explains. "That’s where the radar
comes into its own. All commercial skippering has to have that
qualification and it includes use of radar technology. We teach regular boat users in the skill too, including high speed night navigation in closed waters."
A secondary initiative will see Nightvision convey its crew on
what John calls, with the air of a man casually envisioning white
knuckles and stomachs hitting chins, "thrill rides." Basically this
John Griffin and John Innes from Aquatrek pour champagne over the new boat at
the launching ceremony at Nealons Quay
John and Mary Griffin with John and Laura Innes and their children Jason age 3
and 8 month old baby Katie with the newly christened boat
John Griffin and John Innes from Aquatrek ’Nightvision’
probably translates as unfortunate lunatics -perhaps desperately
trying to re-ignite waning love interests or something- bouncing
their way in and out to Capel Island during their ’holiday’ in
Youghal. The Killcord will mean they are immediately hauled
back inside if they fall -or jump!- overboard. That means they can
return in one piece to throw up on the pier, collapse in a heap and
get dumped for being wimpish!
Following its official champagne-spraying christening,
Nightvision completed its inaugural day’s, with a highly impressive showcase display in the harbour. A successful series of sea
and fuel trials via a trip to Ballycotton ensued.

ON COURSE FOR A TASTY
RHINCREW CHRISTMAS
By Christy Parker
As every turkey knows, Christmas is synonymous with the kitchen
but there are good ways and disastrous ways to prepare a meal. So
it’s just as well that Oonagh Poynton of Rhincrew Cookery Classes
is around to advise on the difference. Since initiating her venture
some six months Oonagh has discovered the appetite for her service has been both eager and unrestrained. "I’ve been very pleasantly surprised and it’s also heartening to know that people are still
very conscious about eating properly," she says.
Seasonal demand sees Oonagh now running a series of Christmas
courses. Each day-long event facilitates up to 10 people. The 100
cost also includes lunch, dinner and refreshments. "We divide the
class into pairs and each pair will cover four courses, from starters
to turkey and ham, Christmas cake, puddings, mince pies and so
on," Oonagh explains. "So its very much hands-on. I also try to
include some alternative recipes, like baked aubergine and red
cabbage, for example. Everyone gets to learn from what everyone
else’s preparations too and of course they can take all the recipes
home with them," she adds.
Inherently good humoured and humorous, Oonagh is the daughter
of the late, renowned butcher Dick Power and the recently
deceased Ann. Her commitment to cuisine derives from her childhood. "I used to love helping my grandmother, Kitty, making
stews, casseroles and puddings at home. She was particularly good
at making lamb dishes," she recalls.
In 2005, the former hairdresser undertook a 12-week course at the
culinary temple known as Ballymaloe, under the priestess of all
plates, Darina Allen. The intended beneficiaries were expected to
be family and friends but armed with ability and driven by ambition, Oonagh also began nurturing what is now a very successful
presence on the farmer’s market circuit. "I mostly sell homemade
chutneys, jams, pates, soups, quiches and various cakes," she says.
"I use only Irish produce," she adds. If the proof is in the eating,
the guarantee is in the ingredients. "Its crucial to use good quality.
It always shows," she states categorically.
From the outset, legal abeyance required Oonagh to install a commercial kitchen for her burgeoning business. "So eventually I
decided to capitalise on that by running cooking courses as well,"
she informs.
A Jamie Oliver devotee, the mother of four generally runs
Saturday ’entertainment’ catering courses. Succulent aromas
across Rhincrew emanate from vegetarian, pasta, fish and chicken
dishes, across starter, main dishes and desserts.
Men and women, aged 18 to 80, of various abilities and none, have
been seen to roll up their sleeves. Most share a common trait -fear!
As their tutor notes, "Most people regard others as better cooks
then themselves and so are afraid to cater for anyone outside their
own family. Then they find it’s actually quite easy to make food
that tastes so lovely."
And so this is Christmas. With two entertainment and one
Christmas course booked out, places remain on one Christmas
offering, with the possibility of another transpiring. Entertainment
courses resume on January 10th. Meanwhile Course gift vouchers
are obtainable and Oonagh will also construct and deliver personally defined gifts or hampers from her wide range of homemade
produce. Inquiries: (024) 91838; Mobile: 087-6899861

Niamh Walsh and Mary O’Keeffe finished 10th and 16th respectively in this event. Niamh also competed in the Munster novice
cross country and came home in 16th position. well done to both
ladies. It’s great to see some of our senior women representing the
club at cross country events.
Marathons:
The club has been represented in the marathon arena both at home
and abroad over the last few months. Anne Moloney completed
the Berlin Marathon in a solid 4:20 and is currently in training for
her next 26.2 miles! Huge congratulations to Paul Curley who
recorded a personal best of 2:53 in Dublin. He smashed his previous record of 2:57 (Amsterdam ’07). 4 minutes was a huge time
reduction from the flat course of Amsterdam to the challenging
hilly terrain of Dublin. Great running Paul! George Bulman flew
the flag stateside, completing the New York Marathon in a time of
3:56. Well done George.

SUPER VALU FIRST FOR
IRISH HILL LAMB
SuperValu has announced the arrival of Irish Free Range Hill
Lamb to selected SuperValu stores. The lambs will be the first to
carry the new Bord Bia LQAS quality assured logo. SuperValu is
the first retailer in Ireland to have Irish Free Range Hill Lamb in
stores and to offer the new Bord Bia standard.
SuperValu is the biggest seller of Irish lamb in the country and one
of the biggest supporters of Irish sheep farmers. In 2008 SuperValu
and its network of independent retailers will sell almost 30 million worth of Irish lamb.
The physical differences between hill and lowland lamb can be
characterised by smaller, lighter and leaner carcasses, and a deeper colour meat. However, it is in the flavour, brought about by
their upland rearing, that their most significant point of difference
emerges. Hill lambs graze over a much broader and more varied
landscape than the lowland varieties. Their meat is coloured by the
diversity of the flora that they feed on
heathers, hill flowers,
herbs and various grasses give the meat a sweet succulent flavour.
An additional feature is its late seasonality hill lamb is available
from early autumn to early Spring. Not only do these lambs offer
a wonderful eating experience, they play an important environmental role, contributing to the eco-balance of Ireland s upland
region.
SuperValu has a policy of sourcing and selling only 100% Irish
meat which ensures superior quality and farm to fork traceability,
which is second to none. This long standing commitment to secure
supply from local Irish producers has ensured consumer confidence in the SuperValu meat offering, which is served up by expert
butchers, across the network of 192 stores, giving SuperValu the
biggest butchery network in the country.
SuperValu offers a wide range of lamb products, including joints
and lamb cuts that are prepared in store by the team of qualified
butchers. This is also complimented by an extensive pre-pack
range. The pre-pack range offers great choice in terms of product
depth, from a value offering (Family Value Range) to a more easy
to prepare and cook option (Just Cook & Supreme).
Commenting on the announcement, Donal Horgan, Managing
Director, SuperValu said; SuperValu is committed to providing
the Irish consumer with top quality Irish fresh foods whenever it is
possible. We pride ourselves on the quality of our fresh foods
offering, and we strive to provide the best. In addition to our 100%
sourcing of Irish lamb, we also stock 100% Irish beef, pork, and
chicken. Indeed, across the entire range, 75% per cent of everything sourced by SuperValu, is either produced or sourced in
Ireland
representing a commitment to Irish suppliers of more
than 1.7 billion.
