Videorecording
Whataremyprofessionalresponsibilitiesformaintainingconfidentiality?
Youarerequiredtocollectconsentformsfromstudentsandotheradultswho
appearinthevideoclip(s)foryouredTPA.Thisisaprofessionalresponsibilitythat
shouldnotbeignored.Respectingstudents’privacyandprotectingyourselfand
yourcooperatingteacherareimportantconcerns.Yourprogramwillprovideyou
withaconsentformtouse.Itisalsovitallyimportantthatyouonlyusethevideofor
thepurposeofcompletingyouredTPAandthatyoudonotshareitwithothers
publicly.VideoofyourteachingshouldNEVERbepostedinpublicvenueslike
YouTube,Facebook,etc.,orsharedwithpeoplenotinvolvedwiththeedTPA
assessment,asthisviolatestheconfidentialityofthechildrenyouteachandtheir
families.
WhatarethefeaturesofaqualityedTPAvideo?
Thereisnorequirementorexpectationforyoutocreateaprofessional‐‐‐quality
production.Theuseoftitles,openingandclosingcredits,amusicalsoundtrack,or
specialeffectsmustbelefttoHollywood,asreviewerswillbeexaminingonlywhat
thevideoshowsyouandyourstudentsdoingwithinthelearningsegment.
However,whileitisnotnecessarytobetechnicallyperfect,itisimportantthatthe
qualityofthevideo(i.e.,clarityofpictureandsound)besufficientforscorersto
understandwhathappenedinyourclassroom.ReadyouredTPAhandbookcarefully
tobesureyourclipsaretheappropriatelengthandthattheyfeaturetheteaching
andlearningemphasisforyoursubjectarea.
HowdoIpreparemyedTPAvideorecordingsformylearningsegment?
• Adviseyourcooperating/masterteacherandtheprincipalatyourschoolof
yourneedtovideorecordlessonsforyourlearningsegment.Althoughitis
oftenunnecessary,discusswiththemanyarrangementsforacameraoperator.
Ifyouuseacameraoperator,looktopeoplewhoalreadyhaveapprovaltobe
inclassrooms(e.g.,yourcooperatingteacheroryouruniversitysupervisor).
• Collectthenecessaryconsentformsfromaparent/guardianofyourstudents
(or,ifeligible,fromthestudentsthemselves)andfromadultswhomight
appearinthevideo.Respectingstudents’privacyaswellasprotecting
yourselfandyourcooperatingteacherareprofessionalresponsibilitiesthat
shouldnotbeignored.
• Makearrangementsforthenecessaryvideo/audioequipmentwellin
advance.Ifyoudonothavereadyaccesstovideoequipment,reachoutto
peers,familymembers,yourcooperating/masterteacher,university
supervisor,ortechnologystaff.

locatedintheclassroomduringtheactivitiestobeshowninthevideo.What
evidencedotherubricscallforthatthecamerawillneedtocapture?Where
willthecamera/microphonesneedtobeplacedinordertooptimizesound
quality?Trytoplanaheadandminimizetheneedforacameraoperatorby
scoutinglocationsinadvance.Inparticular,thinkaboutwheretoplaceany
learnerwhodoesnothavepermissiontobefilmed,sothats/he
canparticipateinthelessonoff‐‐‐camera.Ifyoudoneedacameraoperator,
meetinadvancetosharethelessonplanandvideoneeds.
PracticevideorecordingBEFOREteachingthelearningsegment.Thiswill
provideachancetotesttheequipmentforsoundandvideoquality,aswellas
giveyourstudentsanopportunitytobecomeaccustomedtothecamerain
theroom.
TrytorecordtheENTIREsetoflessonsinyourlearningsegment.Thiswill
provideyouwithplentyoffootagefromwhichtochoosetheclip(s)thatbest
providetheevidencecalledforinthecommentariesandrubrics.
Benatural.Whilerecording,trytoforgetthecameraisthere(thisisgoodto
explaintoyourstudentsaswell),andteachlikeyounormallydo.Ifpossible,
recordotherlessonspriortothelearningsegmentsothatthecameraisnota
novelitemintheclassroom.Ifusingacameraoperator,advisehimorhernot
tointerjectintothelessoninanyway.
Besurethatthevideoclip(s)youselectandsubmithavequalityaudiosothat
thoseviewingtheclip(s)canhearindividualvoicesofstudentsastheyare
workingonataskorwitheachother.Itisoftenhelpfultowatchthevideo
eachday,soyoucancheckforaudioqualityandnote,withtimestamps,
possibleexamplesofevidenceforlaterconsiderationinchoosingtheclip(s)
yousubmit.
WhatresourcesdoIneedtoconsider(equipment,software,andtutorials)?
edTPAdoesnotspecifytheuseofanyparticularequipment,software,tutorials,etc.,
althoughthereareformattingrequirementsoutlinedintheEvidenceChartinthe
edTPAhandbooks.Anexpensivecameraisnotnecessaryforthedemandsofthis
assessment.Manylow‐‐‐endcamerasarecapableofproducingapictureandsound
qualitythatissuitableforyourvideoneeds.However,certainsituations(e.g.,
groupingswherethestudentsarenotfacingthecameramicrophone,lotsofambient
noise)maynecessitatetheuseofsomekindofexternalmicrophone.Theonlyway
toknowforsureistotesttheequipmentwhileteaching.
Videoequipmentandeditingtutorials.
Sincetheclip(s)yousubmitforyouredTPAmustconsistofacontinuousscene
withoutanyedits,youwillneedtouseeditingtoolstoextractaclipfromthelonger
videoyourecord.Ifyouarenewtovideorecordingortothecamerayouareusing,
besuretoreadtheinstructionmanualthatcomeswiththecamera.Evenifthe
manualhasbeenlost,mostmanualsareavailableonlineatthemanufacturer’s
website.Manufacturersmayalsohaveonlinetutorialstohelpyoulearnhowtouse
thecamera.YouTubehasaplethoraofvideosthatdemonstratehowtosetupand
operateacamera.
Assoonasthevideorecordingisfinished,makeabackupcopyofthevideoonahard
drive,aUSBdrive,oraCD/DVD.
Thefreevideoeditingsoftwarethatcomeswithmostcomputersisperfectly
adequateforpreparingandsavingtheclip(s)intheformatrequiredinyouredTPA
handbook.PCshavetheprogramWindowsMovieMaker(foundintheSTARTmenu
underPROGRAMS),whileMacsprovideyouwithiMovie.Therearemanyonline
tutorialsthatwillsupportyouinlearninghowtousetheseprograms.

Whichvideoformatsareacceptable?
Savingyourvideoinanacceptableformatisnecessaryforasuccessfuluploadwhen
yousubmityouredTPA.Thereareanumberofformatsthatareacceptable:.flv,.asf,
.qt,.mov,.mpg,.mpeg,.avi,.wmv,.mp4,and.m4v.Eachoftheseformatswillupload
successfullytotheedTPAsubmissionplatformandscoringsystemifyourvideohas
beenproperlysaved.Ifavideoclipisnotinthecorrectformat,youwillreceivean
errormessageandbeaskedtoresubmitthevideoclipproperly.Whenyouare
preparingavideoclipforyouredTPA,followthedirectionsprovidedwiththe
editingsoftwareyouareusingtosaveitintheproperformat.Youreditingsoftware
maygiveyouafewchoicesorperhapsjustone.Forexample,WindowsMovieMaker
savesinonlyoneformat(.wmv),butitisaformatthatiswidelyusedandis
acceptableforanedTPAsubmission.Othersoftwareprogramsmaysaveina
differentformat,andthatformatisusuallyexplainedinthehelpfilesthat
accompanyanysoftware.Ifyouwanttobesureyourvideoclipissavedcorrectly,
simplyrightclicktolookatthefileproperties(orusethe“Getinfo”commandona
Mac)andchecktoseeifoneofthefilesuffixeslistedaboveispresentattheendof
thefilename.
