Smoke Control Installation Datasheet
The FSSI-U8 (Field Server Simplex Interface) is UL
Listed (UL864) for application in a TAC Smoke Control
System. This data sheet provides information, instructions and restrictions pertaining to the proper application of this specific product in a smoke control system. This data sheet takes precedence over other general product installation and application information for the FSSI and must be used in conjunction with the
“Smoke Control Systems Manual” (0-004-7897-1). The manual provides a system level view of the smoke control application and provides additional information regarding the various products that can be interconnected to form a system. capacity only by the fire alarm panels. The Xenta 401, or other programmable Xenta controller, will typically be used as a Fire Alarm Managing Controller(s) – FAMC.
Regardless of contact or serial alarm input from the
FSSI, the FAMC will programmed to trigger the automated zoned fire/smoke response based on only the first alarm signal and will ignore subsequent alarms until manually reset from the FSCS. The FAMC will insure the applicable zone controllers receive the fire alarm signal.
The FSCS-Managing Controller (FSCS-MC) will typically be programmed to enunciate the alarm condition on the
FSCS panel.
RS232 Simplex Interface
The FSSI provides the Simplex interface via an RS232 serial port positioned on the side of the enclosure. The
RS232 port is presented through an RJ45 modular jack.
An RJ45 modular Cat-5 cable (such as provided with the
FSSI Simplex I/F) extends from the RJ45 RS232 port on the FSSI to the Simplex fire panel. The FSSI cable is terminated with the serial data connections at the
Simplex panel. Refer to the Simplex installation documentation for RS232 connection description.
The RS232 RJ45 jack provides two integral LED indicators which illuminate to indicate activity on the
General Application
The TAC model FSSI-U8 is a UL864 listed version of the
FieldServer Technologies’ Model FS-B2011-01 Simplex
LON Bridge product. The FSSI is a protocol translator gateway between the industry standard LonWorks technology LON network and the proprietary Simplex protocol.
Within the TAC smoke control system, the FSSI may be used to serially receive fire and smoke alarm signals from a Simplex fire alarm panel. The FSSI supports
Simples series 4020, 4100 and 4100U fire alarms panels.
The fire alarm signals used to activate the system’s automated zoned smoke control response may originate from any UL864 listed system via discrete contact closure which can be monitored by any of the Xenta controllers. However, when working with a large system, receiving the fire alarms through a serial interface such as the FSSI can be much more efficient and limited in
RS232 transmit and receive signals. The yellow LED indicates transmission from the FSSI and the green LED indicates receive data to the FSSI.
The integrity of the RS232 Type-3 communications between the FSSI and the Simplex panel is supervised by the FSSI. Upon the detection of a fault, the FSSI shall communicate the condition to the FSCS-MC to audibly and visually enunciate on the FSCS panel.
The RS232 connection to the Simplex panel must not be longer than 20 ft. in length and must be run in conduit.
The RS232 is power limited (+-12V).
Three conductors (1, 4 & 8) of the 8-position RJ45 modular jack on FSSI are connected to Simplex as follows:

Controller Network LON Communications
The FSSI controllers communicate with the Xenta controllers using a common network, LonWorks TP/FT-
10, 78Kbps LON (Local Operating Network).
Rating: Type 3, Max: 5V, .1A, Power Limited,
8850ft @ 16awg cable. See smoke control system manual for table of cable and distance specifications.
The LON port is presented on the side of the FSSI enclosure with a two position plug-on terminal block labeled “Fieldbus”.
The LON communications is Power Limited and should be supervised from the FSCS controller.
LON Network Integrity
In smoke control applications, the LON network communications cable carrying smoke control commands may only interconnect with products that are
UL864 listed. The smoke control system manual identifies the other TAC and 3 rd
party products that may be interconnected in the smoke control system on the
LON with the FSSI.
The communications integrity to the FSSI from the
FAMC is supervised and any fault is reported to the
FSCS controller for audible and visual enunciation on the FSCS panel.
Ethernet Port
The FSSI provides an RJ45 10BASE-T Ethernet port on the side of the unit. This port is used for configuration and maintenance functions and does not participate in the smoke control application.

Miscellaneous Indicators & Switches
The FSSI provides an assortment of LED indicators next to the communications ports and as shown in the following figure. A Service Pin push button (labeled “IP
Request”) is provided on the side next to the LEDs.

Enclosure
The FSSI is housed within a metal enclosure (4.08”W x
3.82”D x 1.7”H) and provides rails along the side with holes for panel mounting. The FSSI should be installed within one of the ENCL-.. series enclosures designated in the smoke control system manual.
