GETTING TO KNOW YOUR APPLIANCE

The appliance you have just bought, marked by the symbol , can be used for freezing fresh and cooked food, making ice cubes and storing frozen and deep-frozen food. For best use of your applaince, please read these instructions carefully. They contain a description of your appliance and useful tips for storing food.

DESCRIPTION OF THE APPLIANCE (Fig. 1)

A) Control panel

1. Operation LED (green light)

2. Temperature alarm LED (red light)

3. Internal temperature adjustment knob

(thermostat)

4. Open door acoustic alarm switch

(if provided)

B) Drawers for freezing fresh food and storing frozen food.

C) Drawer for storing frozen food only.

Some models are provided with ice packs: remove them from the back of the drawer (C) and position them next to each other inside the drawer.

INSTALLATION

Ensure that the appliance is not damaged.

Any transport damages must be reported to the dealer within 24 hours of delivery of the appliance.

Install the appliance in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from heat sources such as stoves, cookers, direct sunlight, etc. If this is not possible, the following side distances must be respected:

a) between appliance and coal or paraffin stoves: minimum 30 cm

b) between appliance and gas or electric cookers: minimum 3 cm.

It is also possible to place insulating sheets (sold in specialist shops) between the appliance and the stove. The appliance must be installed on a stable and flat surface as indicated in the instructions given on the rear of the template provided with the appliance.

Wait two hours before switching the freezer on: in the meantime clean the interior with a sponge dampened in a solution of water and vinegar, and fit any accessories provided.

Important: The connection socket must be accessible even after installation, so that the appliance can be unplugged if necessary. If this is not possible, connect the appliance to the mains supply by means of a two-pole switch with minimum break distance between contacts of 3mm, fitted at an easily accessible point.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION AND OPERATION

Ensure that the voltage indicated on the appliance data plate corresponds to the mains voltage.

Earthing of the appliance is compulsory by law. The Manufacturer declines all liabilities for injury to persons or damage to property resulting from failure to observe these regulations.

When the appliance is plugged in, if the thermostat knob is not set to symbol • , the green and operation. The red alarm LED remains alight until the correct operation temperature has been reached. It lights up again when the temperature inside the freezer rises due to frequent or prolonged door opening, and when the appliance has been loaded with fresh food to be frozen.

TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT

The thermostat (see Fig. 1) is used to adjust the temperature inside the appliance. Position indicates that the operation of the appliance is interrupted. The ideal storage temperature of

”. Ambient air temperature, the amount of food stored and the location of the appliance and frozen food for a long time is -18°C. In normal conditions (ambient temperature between +20°C and +25°C), it is advisable to adjust the thermostat knob to a middle position. To obtain colder or warmer temperatures than -18°C, turn the thermostat knob to the highest setting or to position

“ the frequency of door opening can affect freezer temperature adjustments. The setting of the thermostat may have to be varied to allow for these factors. To check the temperature of the food stored, place the thermometer (if provided) under the food; if it is placed on the food it will indicate the temperature of the air that does not correspond to that of the food stored.

USING THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT

This appliance is equipped with an acoustic alarm (if present) which sounds when the door is left open.

FREEZING (Fig. 6)

The amount of fresh food which can be frozen in

24 hours at an ambient temperature of 25°C is stated on the rating plate.

Do not place hot food in the freezer; never re-freeze even partially defrosted foodstuffs.

Wrap foods in aluminium foil or cling film or place them in specific containers. Ensure all packs placed in the freezer have a label indicating the date of freezing and content. In the event of a power cut, the freezer compartment will maintain the correct storage temperature for about 15 hours; however, it is advisable to avoid opening the compartment door during such periods.

Note: thanks to the efficient door seal, the freezer door will not re-open easily immediately after closing; wait a few minutes before re-opening.

MAKING ICE CUBES

Fill the ice cube trays 3/4 full and place them in the top drawer.

If the trays stick to the compartment, do not try to detach them with sharp or pointed objects that could damage the appliance, but use a spoon handle.

Important: Do not eat ice cubes or ice lollies immediately after taking them out of the ice cube compartment - risk of “cold” burns. Do not store liquids in glass containers in the freezer.

STORING FROZEN FOOD

When purchasing frozen food products, make sure that the package is intact, i.e. it is not swollen and has no damp patches. Place the frozen foods in the freezer immediately to avoid excessive temperature increases during transport compromising freshness. In any case productsmust be used within the date indicated on the packs.

THAWING

Some tips:

Vegetables to be cooked: do not thaw, but simply put into boiling water and cook as normal.

Meat (large cuts): thaw in the refrigerator without removing the original package. Leave at ambient temperature for about two hours before cooking.

(small cuts): thaw at ambient temperature or cook straight away.

Fish: thaw in the refrigerator without removing from package or cook when half defrosted.

Pre-cooked food: cook in the oven straight away without removing the aluminium container.

Fruit: thaw in the refrigerator.

DEFROSTING

Defrost the appliance at least once a year or when the ice on the walls reaches a thickness of about 3 mm.

In between one defrosting and the next, remove frost from time to time from the freezer grids using a spatula. Do not use sharp or pointed tools. Any damage to the appliance resulting from failure to observe these instructions is not covered by the guarantee. Defrost the appliance preferably when the amount of frozen food is minimal or when the appliance is empty. The frozen food must be wrapped in sheets of newspaper (or a cover) and kept in the refrigerator or a cool place.

Adjust the thermostat control knob to position • , unplug the appliance from the mains and leave commercially available: they may contain harmful substances. After defrosting the appliance, rinse and dry carefully. Reconnect the freezer. Replace the frozen food in the freezer.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

A periodic and proper maintenance will ensure a longer life to your appliance.

Before any operation, unplug the appliance from the mains supply.

Clean the interior periodically with a solution of warm water and vinegar. Rinse and dry.

Do not use abrasive products or detergents.

From time to time clean the door seal with water and then dry well. Do not use oil or grease.

After cleaning, reconnect the appliance to the mains supply.

VACATION

If you are going away for some time, unplug the appliance from the mains and empty it completely.

Clean the inside and leave the door open.

Do not switch off the appliance for brief periods of disuse.

AFTER-SALES SERVICE

The incorrect operation of the appliance is not always due to a fault but it may also result from incorrect installation or use. To avoid unnecessary service calls for which you will be charged, we recommend you consult this troubleshooting guide:

1. If the red LED is permanently on or blinking, the internal temperature is too high.

Check that:

• the door shuts properly

• the thermostat knob is set correctly (see section “Temperature

Adjustment”)

• the freezer is not near a heat source

• air circulates freely in the air vents

• there is not an excessive build-up of ice

If your appliance is fitted with a drawer situated on the bottom left hand side (see Fig. 11), remove it and clean the inside with a soft brush.

2. The compressor operates continuously. Check that:

• the ambient temperature is not too high

• the door is not being opened too frequently.

3. The appliance is excessively noisy. Check that:

• the appliance is level.

4. The appliance is not working at all. Check that:

• the thermostat knob is not set to position

• there is no power failure

•

• the plug is correctly inserted into the socket

• the domestic mains switch is not disconnected and that the fuses have not blown

• the power supply clable is not damaged (see Note).

Note: If the power supply cable must be replaced, unplug the appliance from the mains and replace the cable making sure that new cable is connected correctly. If, after performing the above checks, your appliance still does not work properly, contact the After-sales Service

(contact information can be found in the guarantee and telephone directory); explain the problem, specifying the model and serial number of your appliance.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION

1) For Great Britain only

Warning – this appliance must be earthed

Fuse replacement

If the mains lead of this appliance is fitted with a

BS 1363A 13amp fused plug, to change a fuse in this type of plug use an A.S.T.A. approved fuse to BS 1362 type and proceed as follows:

1. Remove the fuse cover (A) and fuse (B).

2. Fit replacement 13A fuse into fuse cover.

3. Refit both into plug.

Important:

The fuse cover must be refitted when changing a fuse and if the fuse cover is lost the plug must not be used until a correct replacement is fitted.

Correct replacement are identified by the colour insert or the colour embossed in words on the base of the plug.

Replacement fuse covers are available from your local electrical store.

2) For the Republic of Ireland only

The information given in respect of Great Britain will frequently apply, but a third type of plug and socket is also used, the 2-pin, side earth type.

3) Socket outlet / plug (valid for both countries)

If the fitted plug is not suitable for your socket outlet, please contact Whirlpool Service for further instruction. Please do not attempt to change plug yourself. This procedure needs to be carried out by a qualified Whirlpool technician in compliance with the manufactures instructions and current standard safety regulations.
