DATUM U100 Pump Level Controller
The DATUM U100 controller provides non-contacting,
maintenance-free level control and indication in liquid and
slurry applications
As a dedicated pump control unit it offers a wide range of
basic features, such as variations in pump duty, standby
cycles and alarm strategies.
The unit has been designed for maintenance-free
'fit and forget' performance in applications where its
standard pump control routines provide real end-user
benefits.
Three user-definable relay set points ensure maximum
versatility.

Display
Alarm Functions
A high-clarity, back-lit l.c.d. is fitted as standard. This has a
6-digit level indicator, a 12-character text display and a
bargraph with direction indicators. The clarity of the display
makes reading the level easy and setup from the front of the
unit is very simple using the integral keyboard.
A number of standard alarm functions are included to advise
you when a problem has occurred:
• High or Low level
• In or Out of band
• Rate of Filling or Emptying
• High or Low Temperature
• System Failed
High Accuracy
A small blocking distance of 300mm (11.8 in.) and a narrow
beam angle of 10° give an overall accuracy of:
0.25% of measured range
or 6mm (0.24 in.), whichever is the greater
and a resolution of:
0.1% of measured range
or 2mm (0.08 in.), whichever is the greater
Configuration
The DATUM U100 can be configured in one of three ways:
• the front panel via the integral keypad
• an external infrared communicator
• via a PC using the RS232 port
Isolated Outputs
All settings are password-protected to prevent tampering.
The DATUM U100 is fitted, as standard, with an isolated
analog output (either 4 to 20mA or 0 to 20mA), three form 'C'
(SPDT) volt-free contacts rated 5A at 240v a.c. and a full
duplex RS232 digital output for PC configuration.
Echo Processing
The DATUM U100 utilizes in-built 'DATEM' technology (Digital
Adaptive Tracking and Echo Mapping). This technology has
been developed to give the DATUM range the advantage
when identifying the 'true target level' where there are
obstructions in whatever vessel you are measuring.
Pump Control
Up to 8 different pumping strategies are available to simplify
control of your plant:
• Fixed duty assist
• Fixed duty back-up
• Alternate duty assist
• Alternate duty back-up
• Duty back up and assist
• Service ratio duty assist
• Service ratio duty back-up
• FOFO (alternate First-On-First-Off) duty assist
Hot Keys
There are 3 'Hot Keys' on the keypad which are used to view
parameters quickly while in the run mode (e.g. pump usage,
signal strength). This also enables an operator or engineer to
display the level in different units.

Temperature Compensation
The wall-mounting version, protected to IP65 (NEMA3) as
standard, is housed in a tough, polycarbonate, flame- resistant
case making it ideally suitable for use in harsh industrial
environments.
As the temperature of surrounding air varies, its density also
changes. Once a system is calibrated any variation in air
density affects its accuracy. The transducer, with integral
temperature compensation, takes these changes into account
and modifies the calibration automatically.
The panel-mounting version can also be supplied with a cover
bringing it up to IP65 for use in hosedown areas.
Power Supply
The unit can be supplied suitable for either 115V or 230V a.c.
50/60Hz power supply. As standard, a battery back-up facility
is built-in to enable the unit to continue to operate from an
18 to 36V d.c. supply in the event of a mains supply failure.

The maintenance of level in a water tower is a very simple application but one that can require some sophisticated control, which can be
undertaken remotely from the tower. In the example above the DATUM 100 provides a 4 to 20mA level signal which is used as the input to
a Digital Control System to control the pumps. Alternatively, the DATUM U100 can control directly using the standard pump strategies and
inbuilt 5A relays.
The DATUM U100 has been designed for use in basic water applications, e.g. simple low-cost pump control of up to three separate pumps
with in-built pump-cycling software.

A wet well is typically used to hold waste water temporarily. When the liquid level reaches a specific point the well is pumped down and the
water is transferred to another part of the treatment process.
The DATUM U100 can control up to three pumps. The pumps could be configured for alternate duty assist, i.e. they operate alternately
to share the workload. For example, Pump 1 switches on at 1.4m (4.55 ft) liquid depth and pumps down to 0.5m (1.6 ft). The set points are
then transferred to pump 2 which switches on first next time.
If the volume is such that Pump 1 cannot cope, Pump 2 switches on when the liquid level reaches 2.0m (6.5 ft) and both pumps continue
to pump until the level reaches 0.5m (1.6 ft). If both pumps cannot cope, a high alarm is triggered at 2.4m (7.8 ft) to advise the operator that
the pumps have insufficient capacity.

A reservoir is used typically to hold water temporarily as a supply for drinking water to houses or industrial processes. The main criteria for
a reservoir level control system is to maintain a sufficient capacity and refill the reservoir when the level runs low. The reservoir is filled using
two pumps set to alternate duty assist, i.e. they come on alternately to share the workload. During normal operation, Pump 1 comes on
at 0.6m (1.95 ft) and pumps up to 1.7m (5.5 ft). The set points then shift to Pump 2 which becomes the first pump next time.
During peak times, when Pump 1 cannot cope, Pump 2 comes on when the level falls below 0.4m (1.3 ft) and both pumps pump up to 1.7m
(5.5 ft). If the level continues to fall to below 0.4m (1.3 ft) a low alarm relay will switch on and advise the operator that the pumps have
insufficient capacity.
