Plug power cable to any three-prong AC power outlet.
Unscrew y-cable connector and install the Waterproof Connector Cap when charging is complete.
Note: You can leave the board on-charge perpetually, as the charging circuitry will shut itself off after charging is

remove the Nose Stop and tighten the hand screws fully, then re-install the Nose Stop.
Turning your Device On and Off
To toggle your device between On and Off simply press the ON/OFF Button. The illuminated green light indicates
the board is powered on. It will take up to 10 seconds for the board's bluetooth module to become available for
connections. Battery level is only available via the Android Application.
Activating the Big Fin Scientific Application
Note: The tablet and fish-board will be paired and tested together before the kit is shipped to you, so you may never need to
do the steps in this section. Activation may become necessary should you uninstall the application from your tablet or make
system changes to your tablet.
1.
Power up your Android tablet or phone and open the Big Fin Android Application.
For help, write to: [email protected] or call 512-808-0FIN (0346)
 Page 11
 Getting Started
2.
Turn your fish-board on and select “Activate” at the screen shown below. If you don't have your fishboard available, you can also use the Register function to allow 30 days of use on the tablet before it
becomes necessary to connect the tablet to continue using the application. Both "Activate" and "Register"
start a 30-day count-down, after which application will not start. The count-down resets each time the
Application recognizes a Big Fin fish-board of any type. The Register function allows a single 30-day trial.
3.
Selecting "Activate" causes the Application to search for Bluetooth devices and a list of nearby Bluetooth
device names will appear.
NOTE: Your fish-board's bluetooth "name" is located on the side of the device facing you.
For help, write to: [email protected]com or call 512-808-0FIN (0346)
 Page 12

4.
5.
Select your device’s name whenever it appears in the list.
A dialogue box may appear on your tablet, asking to confirm a pair key, if this is the first time the tablet
has connected to the fish-board. In this case, select "yes" or "confirm", no matter the number shown.
6. The application will notify you when it connects with a pop-up message (example: "Connected to DFS/2
Tarpon") as well as a "Application Activated!" message. The messages disappear in a few seconds. The
connected Fish-Board name will be located in the upper info bar of the Application. You may need to
select "Study Settings" to get past the main menu and see the info bar.
7. If an error occurs and you don't get the Application Activated message, try turning off the fish-board,
restarting the application, turning the fish-board back on and trying the Activate button again. If you can't
get the application to activate, take note of any error messages and contact us (contact info below).
Connecting the DFS/2 to the Big Fin Scientific Application
1. At the first use, the Application will start with the Main Menu showing (accessible via the triple-bar icon in
upper left of the screen.) Select "Study List" so that you can access the top info-bar of the Application.
2. Tap on "Connected Board: None" in the top info-bar. This brings up a dialogue box in which any detected
Bluetooth devices are listed. Select the name which corresponds to the Fish-Board you wish to connect.

 Page 13
 Getting Started
3. A success message and a "board ID" with a bunch of numbers will briefly show after connection to the
board. In addition, the top info-bar will now display the Fish-Board name next to "Connected Board:".
The battery level and firmware level of the board will soon show in the top info-bar, after some initial use.
4. You can test the connection by placing the measurement stylus down in the center stripe of the board and
looking for a "stylus down" indicator in the lower right corner of your screen (looks like a pencil).
5. Connection to the Fish-Board may take several attempts, especially if the Fish-Board has been recently
disconnected. This appears to be a limitation of the Bluetooth wireless protocol and is considered
normal. Power-cycling the Fish-Board and re-attempting to connect may solve connection problems. In
rare cases, turning off the Bluetooth radio in the tablet, then re-starting the radio is required.
