4 Install Sophos Anti-Virus
You must be logged on to the computer as root. If you have already downloaded the installer, you can go straight to step 2.
1. If you haven't already downloaded the installer, do as follows: a) Go to http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools.aspx
b) Find Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux Free Edition and click Download. Follow the instructions to download the tarball to a temporary directory, for example
/tmp
.
2. Change to the temporary directory and untar the tarball:
tar -xzvf tarball
3. Run the install script:
./sophos-av/install.sh
4. The installer guides you through the installation:
■
■
When prompted for the type of auto-update you want, select Sophos.
When prompted for the version you want, select Free.
Sophos Anti-Virus is installed in the directory that you selected.
You have finished installing Sophos Anti-Virus. Sophos Anti-Virus will update itself automatically from Sophos. By default, it will do this every 60 minutes, provided that the computer is connected to the internet.
By default, Sophos Live Protection is turned on. This checks suspicious files against the latest information in the SophosLabs database to decide whether they are malicious. If you want to turn off Live Protection, see the Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux configuration guide .
Sophos Anti-Virus also sends product and platform information to Sophos to help us with product development. See Sophos Knowledgebase Article 121214 .

5 Check on-access scanning
On-access scanning is your main form of protection against viruses. Whenever you open, save or copy a file, Sophos Anti-Virus scans it and grants access to it only if it is safe.
By default, on-access scanning is active. If you want, you can check that it is active and start it if necessary.
Note: To use the commands in this section, you must be logged on to the computer as root.
This document assumes that you have installed Sophos Anti-Virus in the default location,
/opt/sophos-av
. If you have not, when you run a command, you must substitute the installation directory that you are using.
5.1 Check that on-access scanning is active
■
To check that on-access scanning is active, type:
/opt/sophos-av/bin/savdstatus
5.2 Start on-access scanning
To start on-access scanning, do one of the following:
■
Type:
/opt/sophos-av/bin/savdctl enable
■
Use the appropriate tool to start the installed service sav-protect. For example, type:
/etc/init.d/sav-protect start
or
service sav-protect start

6 Scan the computer now
We recommend that you scan the whole computer for viruses right after you install Sophos
Anti-Virus. To do this, you run an on-demand scan.
Note: This is especially important if the computer is a server and you want to minimize the risk of spreading viruses to other computers.
■
To run an on-demand scan of the computer, type:
savscan /
startup guide
7 What happens if viruses are detected
Regardless of whether viruses are detected by on-access scanning or an on-demand scan, by default Sophos Anti-Virus:
■
■
Logs the event in syslog and the Sophos Anti-Virus log.
Sends an email alert to root@localhost.
Sophos Anti-Virus also displays alerts according to whether the viruses were detected by on-access scanning or an on-demand scan, as explained below.
On-access scanning
If on-access scanning detects a virus, Sophos Anti-Virus denies access to the file and by default displays a desktop pop-up alert like the one shown below.
If the desktop pop-up alert cannot be displayed, a command-line alert is displayed instead.
For information about cleaning up viruses, see the Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux configuration
guide..
On-demand scans
If an on-demand scan detects a virus, by default Sophos Anti-Virus displays a command-line alert. It reports the virus on the line which starts with
>>>
followed by either
Virus
or

8 Upgrade to the supported product
You can easily upgrade from the Free Edition of Sophos Anti-Virus to the supported product, if you have a license.
To upgrade, you change your updating settings, so that your computer or computers will download the supported software from now on.
The steps depend on whether you want to:
■
Upgrade a standalone installation. This is the type of installation you have now.
■
■
Upgrade to installations managed by Sophos Cloud. This lets you manage multiple computers from a web-based console.
Upgrade to installations managed by Enterprise Console. This lets you manage multiple computers from a console on your server.
8.1 Upgrade a standalone installation
Before you start, ensure you have your license details.
You use the Sophos savsetup tool to upgrade your installation.
1. To run savsetup, type:
/opt/sophos-av/bin/savsetup
2. Select the option to display the Updating configuration.
3. Select Sophos as the update source.
In version 9.11 and later, you can specify primary and secondary update sources. For a standalone installation, you don't need to enter anything in the secondary update source.
4. When prompted, enter details of the proxy needed to access updates (if applicable).
5. To upgrade to the supported product, enter the username and password included with your license.
You have finished upgrading.
8.2 Upgrade to installations managed by Sophos Central
You can upgrade Sophos Anti-Virus so that it can be managed centrally by Sophos Central.
To upgrade:
1. Log in to Sophos Central.
2. Go to the Protect Devices tab.
3. Under For your servers, click Linux to download the Sophos Cloud installer.
11
Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux Free Edition
12
4. Run the installer.
This detects your existing installation of Sophos Anti-Virus and enables Sophos Central to manage it.
8.3 Upgrade to installations managed by Enterprise Console
You can upgrade Sophos Anti-Virus so that it can be managed centrally by Sophos Enterprise
Console.
To upgrade, you must:
■
Subscribe to managed Sophos Anti-Virus.
■
■
Set computers to auto-update with managed Sophos Anti-Virus.
Start managing computers centrally.
8.3.1 Subscribe to managed Sophos Anti-Virus
You use Sophos Enterprise Console to sign up for managed Sophos Anti-Virus.
If you don't have Enterprise Console
Install Enterprise Console on a Windows server. During initial setup, ensure you select protection for Linux. For details, see the Enterprise Console quick startup guide .
Then go to the next section.
If you already have Enterprise Console
1. On the View menu, click Update Managers.
2. In the Software Subscriptions pane, click the Add button at the top of the pane to create a new subscription.
3. In the Software Subscription dialog box, select Linux. In the drop-down list of available versions, accept the default Recommended version.
Then continue to the next section.
8.3.2 Set computers to auto-update with managed Sophos Anti-Virus
On each computer, use the Sophos savsetup tool to configure updating.
1. To run savsetup, type:
/opt/sophos-av/bin/savsetup
2. Select the option to display the updating configuration.
3. Select From own server. Then enter the location of the folder on your server where Enterprise
Console puts updates.
Tip: To see the location of this folder, in Enterprise Console, on the View menu, click Bootstrap
Locations. The location for each operating system is displayed.
startup guide
4. In version 9.11 and later, you can enter a "secondary" update source. Sophos Anti-Virus will update from this source if it can't contact the primary source.
Note: The secondary source can be another folder on your network where Enterprise Console puts updates or it can be Sophos.
8.3.3 Start managing computers centrally
This section assumes you have already set up a group or groups of managed computers in
Enterprise Console.
1. In Enterprise Console, in the Groups pane, click on the Unassigned group.
2. Find the Linux computer or computers you have upgraded. Drag them onto another group.
Enterprise Console will manage the computer or computers and will apply the policies you have set for that group.

DOC software is open-source, freely available software, you are free to use, modify, copy, and distribute—perpetually and irrevocably—the DOC software source code and object code produced from the source, as well as copy and distribute modified versions of this software. You must, however, include this copyright statement along with any code built using DOC software that you release. No copyright statement needs to be provided if you just ship binary executables of your software products.
You can use DOC software in commercial and/or binary software releases and are under no obligation to redistribute any of your source code that is built using DOC software. Note, however, that you may not misappropriate the DOC software code, such as copyrighting it yourself or claiming authorship of the DOC software code, in a way that will prevent DOC software from being distributed freely using an open-source development model. You needn't inform anyone that you're using DOC software in your software, though we encourage you to let us know so we can promote your project in the DOC software success stories .
The ACE , TAO , CIAO , DAnCE , and CoSMIC web sites are maintained by the DOC Group at the
Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) and the Center for Distributed Object Computing of Washington University, St. Louis for the development of open-source software as part of the open-source software community. Submissions are provided by the submitter "as is" with no warranties whatsoever, including any warranty of merchantability, noninfringement of third party intellectual property, or fitness for any particular purpose. In no event shall the submitter be liable for any direct, indirect, special, exemplary, punitive, or consequential damages, including without limitation, lost profits, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Likewise, DOC software is provided as is with no warranties of any kind, including the warranties of design, merchantability, and fitness for a particular purpose, noninfringement, or arising from a course of dealing, usage or trade practice. Washington University, UC Irvine, Vanderbilt University, their employees, and students shall have no liability with respect to the infringement of copyrights, trade secrets or any patents by DOC software or any part thereof. Moreover, in no event will Washington University,
UC Irvine, or Vanderbilt University, their employees, or students be liable for any lost revenue or profits or other special, indirect and consequential damages.
16
startup guide
DOC software is provided with no support and without any obligation on the part of Washington
University, UC Irvine, Vanderbilt University, their employees, or students to assist in its use, correction, modification, or enhancement. A number of companies around the world provide commercial support for DOC software, however. DOC software is Y2K-compliant, as long as the underlying OS platform is Y2K-compliant. Likewise, DOC software is compliant with the new US daylight savings rule passed by Congress as "The Energy Policy Act of 2005," which established new daylight savings times (DST) rules for the United States that expand DST as of March 2007.
Since DOC software obtains time/date and calendaring information from operating systems users will not be affected by the new DST rules as long as they upgrade their operating systems accordingly.

Medusa web server
Medusa was once distributed under a ‘free for non-commercial use’ license, but in May of 2000
Sam Rushing changed the license to be identical to the standard Python license at the time. The standard Python license has always applied to the core components of Medusa, this change just frees up the rest of the system, including the http server, ftp server, utilities, etc. Medusa is therefore under the following license:
Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this software and its documentation for any purpose and without fee is hereby granted, provided that the above copyright notice appear in all copies and that both that copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting documentation, and that the name of Sam Rushing not be used in advertising or publicity pertaining to distribution of the software without specific, written prior permission.

CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER RESULTING FROM LOSS
OF USE, DATA OR PROFITS, WHETHER IN AN ACTION OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE OR
OTHER TORTIOUS ACTION, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE USE OR
PERFORMANCE OF THIS SOFTWARE.
Sam would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the folks who supported Medusa over the years by purchasing commercial licenses.
OpenSSL Cryptography and SSL/TLS Toolkit
The OpenSSL toolkit stays under a dual license, i.e. both the conditions of the OpenSSL License and the original SSLeay license apply to the toolkit. See below for the actual license texts. Actually both licenses are BSD-style Open Source licenses. In case of any license issues related to
OpenSSL please contact [email protected].
