Selecting the Right UPS
Eaton's Powerware power management solutions are based on protecting the nine most common power problems present
in any environment. This unique approach makes your product selection decisions about power protection much simpler.
The nine power problems listed below are potentially harmful to both your data and your hardware. Powerware products
offer three levels of power protection: Series 3, Series 5 and Series 9. Based on the parameters defined by your application,
you can select an uninterruptible power systems (UPS) from the series that best matches your power protection needs. To
provide maximum power protection, Eaton offers a full line of Powerware Series 9 UPSs with both single-phase and threephase models in the Series 9 family.

The Powerware Series 3 UPS primarily protects against three of the nine power problems
including power failures, power sags and power surges. This essential, cost-effective protection
is necessary in order to prevent damage such as data loss, file corruption, flickering lights,
hardware damage and equipment shutoff. For example, if your utility fails you could lose all
of your work-in-progress. The Series 3 UPS offers a degree of protection against the remaining
power problems and is most commonly used to protect single workstations and point-of-sale
(POS) equipment.

Powerware Series 5 UPS are most effective against five power problems (power failures, power
sags, power surges, under-voltage and over-voltage) and offer a degree of protection against
other power problems. Some of the damages you risk by not using a Series 5 UPS include

loss and system lockup. Series 5 UPSs are recommended for small network systems - all the

single phase UPS solutions. The following are just a few

Power Density
Powerware rackmount UPSs provide optimal, highdensity power protection for critical loads - delivering
more performance in smaller packages. Our space saving
models allow valuable rack space to be freed up for other
essential equipment.
ABM® Technology
Most UPS manufacturers on the market today offer
constant trickle-charge batteries. This process degrades the
battery's internal chemical composition, reducing potential
battery service life by as much as 50 percent. In contrast,
Powerware ABM technology uses sophisticated sensing
circuitry and an innovative three-stage charging technique
that extends the useful service life of UPS batteries while
optimising the battery recharge time. It also provides
advanced notice of the end of useful battery service life
to allow you ample time to hot-swap batteries without
ever having to shut down connected equipment. ABM
technology is available on Powerware 5115, 5125, 9120,
9125, 9140, 9155 and 9170+.
Extended Battery Runtimes
Your application may require several hours of backup
time and Powerware solutions can deliver it with Extended
Battery Modules (EBMs) and other battery solutions.

Load Segments
Using Powerware LanSafe™ power management software,
you can independently control load segments, which are
groups of receptacles on the rear panel of the Powerware
UPS. This feature, available on Powerware 5115RM, 5125,
9120 and 9125 models, enables you to manage scheduled
shutdowns and sequential startups of protected loads.
During a power outage, you can shut down power to noncritical devices, thereby extending battery backup time
available for critical devices. Additionally, when the load
segments of the Powerware 9125 are used in combination
with Powerware ConnectUPS connectivity cards, users
can remotely reboot locked-up network equipment.
Simply link to the ConnectUPS connectivity card via the
network and toggle the password-protected Load Segment
Controller to get your network back online.
Load Segments
To preserve battery power for selected equipment connected to
Load Segment 1, you can schedule Load Segment 2 supporting
less critical equipment to shut down. As a result, less critical
devices do not drain battery power.

The Powerware 5110 UPS uses Automatic Voltage
Regulation (AVR) to smooth out wide fluctuations
in input voltage. The Powerware 5110 UPS accepts
this inconsistent voltage and delivers clean,
consistent output for protected equipment. AVR
enables you to work through even the most
frequent brownouts and power sags.
Unlike typical line-interactive systems, the
Powerware 5110 UPS does not switch back and
forth to battery power to accomplish this voltage
regulation - which would shorten battery life and
increase battery replacement costs. As a result,

The Powerware 5125RM provides advanced power
management for servers and communications
equipment and is the most flexible UPS in the 16kVA power range. Featuring capabilities often
found in higher kVA units, the 5125RM has load
segments which enable scheduled shutdowns and
load shedding, and offers advanced communications
with Powerware's complete power management
Software Suite for extensive control and monitoring.
The 5125RM provides high power density, with
output ratings at 0.9 power factor to provide more
rack power for power factor corrected loads such as
those found in high-end servers.

Powerware BladeUPS is the first product on the
market to offer a "Hybrid" power technology. This
innovative design takes into consideration the
design capabilities of the actual computer power
supplies in such a manner that the UPS furthers that
capability in order to provide an extremely efficient
and robust protection solution without generating
additional heat.
The Powerware BladeUPS is a rack-mounted
three-phase input and three-phase output
uninterruptible power system. Each 12kW module
can be paralleled to achieve a maximum 60 kW
N+1 system. Paralleling can be accomplished for
either redundancy or capacity purposes. Each 12
kW module is identical and can be converted from
a single stand alone UPS to a system capable of
being paralleled by simply changing the power cord.
The BladeUPS is designed for computer data centre
installations.
Paralleling of the BladeUPS modules takes place
in the BladeUPS bar, which is mounted separately
in the rear of the IT rack. This bar provides the
required input and output power connections for
the BladeUPS modules. Each BladeUPS bar comes
equipped with full 60 kW rated input and output
lugs within a designated wiring area.

The STS100 and STS300 systems are static switches
controlled by thyristor modules to feed critical AC
loads without interruption.
Units switch between different AC input lines
according to priority criteria and technical
characteristics of the input voltage. If the input lines
are synchronised, the exchange from one line to the

The basic STS100 is a single phase product, mounted

The Multi-Server Card provides out-of-band serial communication with LanSafe software
when Ethernet connectivity is not available or required. Load Segment control is mapped

Powerware® Surge /Power Filters
Selecting Protection Equipment
While the key issues in selecting appropriate protection
equipment vary according to the specific needs of the
installation, the following guidelines apply to most
instances:
1. Protect the point-of-entry. This protects the
switchboards and building wiring from externally
generated surges and also provides a degree of
protection against internally generated surges and
spikes from equipment at the site.
2. Protect sub mains. Protection at this level usually
involves filtering and surge protection to further
reduce surges and spikes to acceptable levels for
medium-sized non-critical loads.
3. Protect equipment. This involves protecting individual
items of equipment against surges, spikes and other
electrical noise. In the case of operation-critical
equipment such as computers, process control,
medical equipment and security equipment, protection
against power failure is usually required in the form of
an Uninterruptible Power System (UPS).
Protection Categories
Eaton manufactures a complete range of power protection
components. These components fall into a number of
categories, depending upon where they are utilised in an
electrical installation. The 3 main categories are, according
to AS/NZS1768-1991:
Category A: Long final sub circuits and power outlets
Category B: Major sub mains & short final sub circuits
Category C: Point of entry
In addition to these categories, there are 2 more
categories which simply extend the Category C rating:
Category D: Point of entry, high exposure
Category E: Point of entry, very high exposure, critical load
Equipment listed in this catalogue is referenced by
category to make the selection of correct components
easier.
Selecting protection equipment for Point of Entry
- Category C
Basically, all installations should at least be protected
at the point of entry. The starting point for protection
is the surge diverter. Surge diverters effectively clamp
the incoming lines to neutral or earth, protecting
switchboards, contactors, transformers and motors from
burnout due to extreme voltages. A properly installed
surge diverter can limit surges to below 2000V.
If the main load in an installation is critical of high voltages
(computers, communications systems, test equipment
etc.), or generates electrical noise (variable speed motor
drives, high-frequency welders etc.), a Surge/Power Filter
(SPFi) should be used. In an SPFi, surge diverters are
utilised in conjunction with low-pass filtering to reduce
the surge voltage and remove noise. In normal operation,
an SPFi can be expected to reduce surge potentials to
less than 1000V whilst providing up to 40dB of noise
attenuation.
Method
Firstly determine whether or not you require filtering or
just surge diversion. If selecting a surge diverter, select a
device appropriate for the protection category. The MSDi
is suitable for 3 phase industrial applications and the SPFi
range is suitable for smaller installations, including large
domestic installations, and is available in single and three
phase models. It also provides installation compatibility
with modular DIN switchboards. The MSDi and SPFi range
are both suitable for Categories B & C. In extremely
exposed situations, multiple SPFi modules may be
connected in parallel to increase surge lifetime.
If the site requires filtering at the point of entry, select an
SPFi with the appropriate current rating for the load, then
select the model appropriate for the protection category.
SPFi’s are available to suit categories A to E depending
upon current rating.
Minor sub mains and short final sub circuits – Category B
Once past the main board, most protection involves
both surge diversion and filtering. Non-critical loads such
as lighting and general-purpose power circuits don’t
necessarily require protection.
Method
For large 3-phase loads such as mainframe computers or
computer-controlled machinery, select an SPFi appropriate
for the load. In this case the protection level required
is usually taken as ‘one step’ below the protection level
applied to the point of entry. For single-phase loads up
to 63A, the DSFi and MSFi filter ranges are suitable (for
current < 25A, the CSFi filter also provides installation
compatibility with modular DIN switchboards). Generally,
filters should be mounted as close as possible to the
equipment being protected.
Long Final Sub circuits and Power Outlets - Category A
When protecting final sub circuits and power points there
are 2 options. Either fit hard-wired filters to the circuit or
use plug-in filters on the equipment to be protected. This
choice will be determined by the load (plug-in filters are
only rated up to 10A), and whether or not there is space
for a plug-in filter adjacent to the equipment. With large
computer networks, many administrators prefer not to use
plug-in filters as they can be accidentally unplugged by
the operator’s foot, causing network problems. For small
servers however, a plug-in filter provides extra protection
at the computer for ‘insurance’.
Method
Firstly select whether a hard-wired or plug-in filter is to
be used. If selecting a hard-wired filter, the DSFi range is
suitable for currents up to 32A (for currents < 25A, the
CSFi filter also provides installation compatibility with
modular switchboards). For plug-in filters, the POD and
SSFi provide high levels of protection with good filtering.
The POD also provides protection for ancillary devices
such as phone/fax, network and coaxial cables - ideal for
protecting video TV systems in domestic applications.

The SSFi is designed to provide secondary protection against power surges caused by external sources such as lightning strikes and
substation switching, as well as providing a measure of protection from surge events generated on the secondary side of the filter. The unit
has been designed in accordance with AS3100, AS1768, IEC61643-1, IEC61000-6-1, 2, 3, 4 and other standards and codes as applicable.
The SSFi is a 3-stage protection unit utilising primary and secondary MOV protection in conjunction with a Low-Q LC filter. The unit
provides filtering of the line harmonics, noise and RF transmitters with a cut-off frequency of <10kHz and a minimum attenuation of 40dB
above 1Mhz. The operation status of the SSFi is indicated by lamps on the front panel. The "OK" light indicates that power is applied to

The CSFi is a 3-stage protection unit utilising primary and secondary MOV protection in conjunction with a Low-Q LC filter. The
unit provides filtering of the line harmonics, noise and RF transmitters with a cut-off frequency of <10kHz and a nominal attenuation of 45dB.
All CSFi units are provided with indicators showing power and protection status. Alarms are indicated on the front panel of the
unit. The alarm function provides a summary alarm output for protection degradation as well as power failure. The protection
alarm is configured to alarm on partial protection failure. The summary alarm relay contacts provide remote signalling to other
equipment.

The MSDi surge diverter is designed to provide point-of-entry protection against power surges caused by external sources
such as lightning strikes and substation switching. Common-mode protection is available for sites remote from the M.E.N.
point including industrial sites and rooftops in multi-storey buildings. An ideal device for all Category locations.
The MSDi surge diverters utilise MOV protection for both differential and common-mode protection. Multiple MOV devices
are used in parallel for primary circuit redundancy. The status of protective devices is continuously monitored and displayed

The PWSF8R-U and PWSF1510i are designed to protect equipment against power surges and electrical noise
whilst providing a convenient combination of power outlets to suit most applications. A unique mounting system allows mounting in many different modes to suit crowded racks. Even if no rack space exists, the units may
be mounted externally on the front or rear of the rack. For horizontal mounting, the units require a single 1RU
rack space for installation. For vertical mounting, the unit requires 3RU (132mm) of rack space. The unit may
also be flush mounted to either side of a rack or cabinet.

The PWCAT5 Network Transient Protector (NTP) is
designed to provide protection for CAT5 computer
networks up to 100 MHz. The unit provides
protection for all signal pairs of a CAT5 cable.
The unit is simply used in place of the existing
patch cable from an RJ45 network connection to
workstation or peripheral network device. The
device protects workstations, printers, servers,
hubs or any other protocol-compatible device
from potentially damaging or dangerous voltages,
regardless of their source. The device cannot
protect against data errors caused by an interfering
source.
The PWNTP24 has been designed to provide transient
protection for multi-port CAT5 network devices such
as hubs, routers, and other arrays (individual ports
may also be used to protect individual pieces of
equipment). The unit protects only pairs 1/2 and 3/6,
allowing non-network use for the remaining pairs
such as telephone, video, intercom etc..

The device provides protection by providing a
shunt path to earth for surges and electro static
discharge. When an abnormal voltage appears, the
circuit switches on and diverts the surge to earth.
Normal network traffic is unaffected as the device
only operates during a surge event.
The unique mounting system allows mounting in
many different modes to suit crowded racks. Even
if no rack space exists, the unit may be mounted
externally on the front or rear of the rack. For
horizontal mounting, the unit requires a single 1RU
(44mm) rack space for installation. For vertical
mounting, the unit requires 3RU (132mm) of rack
space. The unit may also be flush mounted to either
side of a rack, cabinet or trolley.

Every ferroresonant power conditioner is

The ferroresonant power conditioners protect

the complete loss of power. They excel at tightly
regulating the voltage, providing superior noise

the harshest electrical environments.
Possessing no moving parts, ferroresonant power
conditioners are virtually maintenance free.
What is Ferroresonance?
Simply put, ferroresonance is the property of
a transformer design in which the transformer
contains two (2) separate magnetic paths with
limited coupling between them. The output contains
a parallel resonant tank circuit and draws power
from the primary to replace the power delivered to
the load.
Note that "resonance" in ferroresonance is similar to
that in linear circuits with series or parallel inductors
and capacitors, where the impedance peaks at a
particular frequency. In a non linear circuit, such as
a ferroresonant transformer, "resonance" is used to
reduce the changes in supply voltage and provide
more constant voltage to the load.
A magnetic device is non linear. Its reluctance
changes abruptly above a certain magnetic flux
density. At this point, the magnetic device is defined
as being in saturation.
Typical Model 200 or 210 Performance
The design of the ferroresonant transformer allows
one magnetic path to be in saturation, while the
other is not. As a result, further change in the
primary voltage will not translate into changes in
the saturated, or secondary voltage, and voltage
regulation results.

3kVA to 22kVA Power Conditioners
The extension of Sola ferroresonant power conditioners
continues through to 22kVA. These units are mostly suited to
hardwired, fixed installation applications for providing smooth
stepless control of the output voltage, attenuation of harmful
impulses or surges and other power line disturbances. Sola 200
power conditioners are ideally suited to provide protection in
computer rooms, regulation for scientific instrumentation, plus
protection and regulated power to sophisticated computer
based factory process equipment. To simplify installation, all
units are free standing and fitted with castors (excluding 22kVA)

The flexibility of Sola 200 power conditioners is increased on
units between 7.5kVA and 18kVA. These units can be field
configured for single phase or three phase operation with 230
Volt taps provided as standard on 240 Volt In/Out models. Sola
200 power conditioners (3 to 22kVA) incorporate approved
surge withstand capabilities, as required by ANSI/IEEE C62.411980.

Frequently, power transformers are incorporated
with process equipment to provide specific voltages

malfunction or fail. The Sola 26 range of power
conditioners provide an immediate answer to this
inconvenience, by suppressing and isolating power
line interference and regulating the output voltage
to ±5%. These hardwired power conditioners provide
the unique feature of selectable input tap for
greater versatility and output voltage taps are also
provided. These features make the Sola 26 power
conditioner the ideal choice for a regulated power
supply where a three phase source is provided
without a neutral line.
The Sola 26 power conditioner provides superior
noise rejection, exceeding 120 dB common mode and
60 dB transverse mode noise rejection. By nature of
design, this product is a true, ultra isolation device.
The Sola 26 is available from 120VA through to

Eaton's range of Powerware dry type transformers
includes single phase isolation or auto transformers
from 10 to 63kVA and three phase isolation or
auto transformers from 10 to 1000kVA capacities,
all meeting the requirements of AS2735. Coils are
wound with high quality winding wire, assembled
onto a cut and stacked lamination of high grade
core steel and impregnated with isonel varnish.
Terminations are provided via nickel plated brass
studs for smaller transformers, or direct onto
aluminium tags for larger kVA sizes.
Standard transformer designs are supplied in sheet
metal enclosures offering IP21 degree of protection
for either commercial or industrial applications. If
required, transformers can be supplied as open type
varnished assemblies with base mounting channels
suitable for mounting in load centres, motor control
centres or special enclosures. Special purpose
enclosures can be designed to meet customer
requirements.
Standard options available include input tappings,
electrostatic earth screens and output distribution
boards fitted with circuit breakers.
Powerware also provides custom magnetic designs
for special applications such as transformers for
harmonics mitigation and current limiting reactors.

Follow the column down until you find the figure indicating your desired backup time (in minutes unless otherwise indicated).
The leftmost column shows you the correct UPS for the task.
Make sure the UPS you found is in the right protection category (for example, Series 3 only protects against 3 types of power
anomalies - refer to the 3-5-9 protection philosophy). If this is not the case, continue down the column until you find a
