An “iesy” wide range DC/DC converters
Series iesy SMC
A complete line of high quality DC/DC converters in a compact housing.
This series is eminently suitable for applications requiring stability, a modest
development of heat and above all a low energy consumption.
An ever-increasing amount of electric equipment is being used on vehicles
and boats. Because most low voltage equipment, such as navigation and
radio equipment, mobile telephones or car hi-fi systems, is designed for 12
Volts, “iesy” supplies DC/DC converters which deliver a stable 12 Volt
supply from a 24 Volt system. These products are also distinguished by high
efficiency, together with absolute safety.
An inferior supply can cause irreparable damage to your 12 Volt system, but
the use of an “iesy” voltage converter prevents such problems.
Next to the standard (non isolated) converters from 24 V to 12 V, a wide
range of other models is available.

The „iesy“ SMC 5, 20, 30 and 60 can also be used as a 13.8Vdc battery
charger, to charge from a 24V system a 12V starter or accessory battery.
Two units SMC 60 can be connected in parallel to obtain a 120 A battery
charger!

iesy DC/DC-converter and battery charger: Because most
equipment is designed for use on a 12V board system it
is necessary to use a converter on 24V board systems
(trucks, busses etc.) to convert the 24V to a reliable and
safe 12V. It is important to use as little energy as possible
and produce as little heat as possible in this process,
making it fuel-efficient and therefore environmentally
friendly.

The SMG-series is a unique series galvanic isolated high quality DC/DC converter. The
inlets and outlets feature complete galvanic isolation which makes them completely
interference-proof. The converter uses the “switch mode” technology, which results in a
lightweight compact housing, safe, reliable and efficient unit. The unit generates little heat,
which makes it easy to find a convenient location for installation.
This series is eminently suitable for applications requiring stability, a modest development
of heat and above all a low energy consumption (stand-by current <25mA)!
Protections: over current / overload, over voltages, overheating, reverse polarity
connection.

The iesy SMGCH 12A (12V=>27,6V/12A) is an 24 Volt battery charger with
galvanic isolation; SMGCH 10A to charge a 6V battery from a 12V system.
To charge a 24V battery from a 12V system. With this type the output voltage is
adjustable with a potentiometer. Input 9 – 18 V, output 27,6 V, current limit 12 A, fan
assisted cooling. To charge a 6V battery from a 12V system=> SMGCH 10A

The SMG 3A is an galvanic isolated converter with a very wide input range, suitable for
both 12 V and 24 V systems, and a fixed 12,6 V output.
Input 7 – 35 V; Output 12,6 V; Current limit 3 A, current decrease linearly from 3 A at 18
V to 1,5 A at 7 V.

input voltage range and a wide range of fixed output
voltage. Therefore, these converters also serve to
stabilize the supply voltage for the connected
equipment! Also, for example, car radios, navigation or
mobile (phone) adapters, the 12 volt models are
available in great variety. The same equipment for 24
volts are much more expensive relative to reduced
supply. For these purposes, are the iesy SMG
converters an affordable and easy to install solution for
operating the 12 volt equipment in trucks, buses and
construction equipment.

The iesy Trailer Converter TDC 650 IP65 provides a
Series iesy TDC/TBC
12V (boat) trailer to a 24V system (truck or towing vehicle) to
connect the lighting of the trailer with the correct voltage. For
this purpose, six independent inputs and outputs are
available. Each will transform the 24V to 12V, independent
of each other. Every output can deliver 5A max.

For example, the Trailer BOOSTER can convert from a 12V
system to a 24V system (2nd battery set) to keep th voltage
on 24,5V if the dynamo/motor is running. With the
CHARGER is the output voltage higher, so the 2nd set (semitraction) batteries charging, for example truck tail lifts/gate
with cyclic loading.

Prevention of electrolytic corrosion
Galvanic corrosion (rust) occurs when two dissimilar metals in electrical
contact are simultaneously exposed to an electrically conducting fluid.
Seawater and, to a lesser extent, fresh water are such fluids. In
general, the more active alloy of the couple corrodes preferentially
while the less active (more noble) material is cathodically protected.
The rate of galvanic corrosion is a function of several variables
including area ratios, conductivity of the fluid, temperature, nature of
the materials, etc.
It is a misunderstanding that galvanic corrosion occurs only in metal
and aluminium hulls. In fact it can occur on any boat as soon as a
metallic part (the shaft and propeller) is in contact with water. Galvanic
corrosion will quickly dissolve your sacrificial anodes, and attack the
shaft, propeller and other metal parts in contact with water as soon as
the boat is connected to the shore-side supply.
It might therefore be tempting not to connect the ground conductor: this
is however extremely dangerous because GFCI’s will not work nor will
a fuse blow in case of a short circuit to a metal part on the boat.
In practice, for example, the ships in the circuit between the different
metals by the combination of the grounding line of the land connection
with the metal parts of the ship (earth) is necessarily closed. This leads,
as described above, to galvanic corrosion. Ship between the metal
(metal parts such as propellers, the drive shaft or the metal shell) and
the metal to country (sheet piling, dock lines or even in addition to
ships), a current flows. In this way will, the anodes, the propeller or the
vessel, to be attacked. By placing the galvanic isolator iesy GI-16 this
damage can be avoided.

Battery Monitor-Watch
Series iesy BW-01 & BW-02 (LED)
"iesy" introduces the revolutionary Battery Watch, a smart piece
of equipment which monitors the status of the battery and
displays it in an intelligent way. The smart design with a minimum
of components gives a broad range of information at the glance of
an eye.
If the Battery Watch is connected to a voltage between 7 and
32V, it will detect the battery voltage before displaying the status
of the battery.
At start-up the red LED is activated as a sign of power up. After
half a second the system is ready with the initialisation and
processing the necessary data to choose the battery system.
After initialisation the Battery Watch checks the battery voltage
and displays this with help of three LED's and a buzzer as
following:

voltage is higher than 13,3 Volt => green/yellow/red ( WALKING LIGHT )
voltage is higher than 12,4 Volt => green

START-/STOP system for a generator. Through the alarm output from the UBA,
it is possible to connect for example a generator or battery charger. In case of
under voltage, it will start and if the battery is full, stopped.

Battery Combiner Schottky Diode to guarantee continuous DC power
Series iesy BCD
Battery Combining Diode
“iesy” diode battery combiners are used to guarantee continuous DC power to
mission critical equipment, such as an electronic engine control system. With a
diode battery combiner two or more DC power sources can be used in parallel
to supply the mission critical load. Failure of one source will not interrupt power
to the critical load. The iesy battery combiners feature a low voltage drop thanks
to the use of Schottky diodes:
at low current the voltage drop is approximately 0,3 V and at the rated output
approximately 0,45V.
Application
With "Emergency" consumers who cannot without voltage or without a short
voltage drop, for example at the start of the engine. So whenever sufficient
voltage is needed on the consumers. This one does not need ”the hand switch”
between 2 or 3 batteries. The total battery capacity is the sum of all the
batteries which are connected.
Examples consumers: VHF marine radio, navigation, on board computer,
emergency equipment and an electronic engine control system.

The iesy Diode battery isolators allow simultaneous charging of two
or more batteries from one alternator, without connecting the
batteries together.
The battery isolator can be used for example in boat’s, recreation
vehicle’s, trucks etc. where beside a starter battery also one or two
accessory batteries are present. Discharging the accessory battery
for example will not result in also discharging the starter battery.
The iesy battery isolators feature a low voltage drop thanks to the
use of high efficiency Schottky diodes: at low current the voltage
drop is approximately 0,3 V and at the rated output approximately
0,45 V.
All models are fitted with a compensation diode that can be used to
slightly increase the output voltage of the alternator; this
compensates the voltage drop from the diodes inside the isolator at
the output.

Note: Simply inserting the battery isolator in the cabling
(current circuit) between the alternator and the batteries will
slightly reduce charge voltage. The result can be that
batteries are not charged to the full 100% and the age of
batteries will be shorten.

No voltage loss! (universal=> auto voltage detection 12/24V)
The iesy Battery Separator/combiner (BS) is a microprocessor controlled battery
connect- and disconnect-relay for use in systems with more than one battery for
example in boats, caravans and campers. It safely charges the auxiliary battery
and prevents starting problems.
Also the BS can be used as a voltage dependent switch, connected on only one
(start) battery.
The BS is a microprocessor controlled high power mechanical switch. The BS
waits until the battery connected to the active charging source reaches 13.2V
(26,4V) for at least 7 seconds before paralleling and charging the auxiliary
batteries. Normally the accessories are connected to the auxiliary battery. The
system disconnects if the battery voltage reaches 12.8V (25,6V) for at least 60
seconds. This way the starter battery stays charged. The Battery Separator is an
excellent alternative for a diode or FET (battery) isolator.
The main feature is that there is virtually no voltage loss so that the output voltage
of alternators or battery chargers does not need to be increased. Another
advantage is that the Battery Separator can be mounted without changing the
existing circuit. That makes the Battery Separator not only very easy to install, but
is sometimes the only option because some alternators do not accept a Battery
Isolator between itself and the the battery.

(preventing of flip-flop effect)
The iesy BS 100/140/160IP/500IP Universal automatically detects the system
voltage (12V or 24V). To prevent that this relay is switching by a short voltage
drop or a voltage spike, is built a small delay between switching “on” and “off”. By
switching “on” the relay remains at least 60 sec. “on” (charging), to prevent the flipflop (on/off/on etc.) effect by a deep discharged second (auxiliary) battery.
Prioritising the starter battery

In a typical setup the alternator is directly connected to the starter battery. The
accessory (auxiliary)battery, and possibly also a bow thruster and other batteries
are each connected to the starter battery with iesy battery separators/combiners
(BS). When a BS senses that the starter battery has reached the connect voltage
it will engage, to allow for parallel charging of the other batteries.
Bipolar-switching (Bidirectional voltage sensing and voltage supply
from all batteries)
The iesy Battery Separator/combiner (BS) has a second unique feature. If a
charger is connected to the second battery, for example in boats and campers,
and the battery reaches 13,2V (26,4V) for at least 7 seconds the switch will
connect the starter battery, so this will be charged also. This is an advantage if
you lie/stand still for a longer time. This way the starter battery also stays in
optimal condition. As the charger is removed and the voltage drops to 12,8V
(25,6V), for at least 60 seconds, the switch will open again.
iesy Start help (Parallel connection in an emergency)
The iesy Battery Separator / combiner (BS) has an extra connection for the
optional start help. If this connection is connected to the starter contact, the
Battery Separator will switch on and the second battery will assist starting the
engine. But be aware that large diesel engines can have very high start currents
which can damage the switch. Use for this feature the BS500.

New: Universal Battery Separator UBS IP67, is a
separate relay control board with 5 programs
All the types have a protection of the second battery and it's connected equipment
of over voltage due to a damaged voltage regulator of the alternator. If the voltage
will become too high the Battery Separator switch will open immediately and
connected equipment is saved.
The UBS can easily be connected to a normal relay, to make
a microprocessor controlled battery relays (Battery
separator). Voltage depend switching and start help also
possible.
Voltage dependent switch (user can be switched via relay)
In some cases it is desirable to have a connector that is only powered when the
vehicle is running. For this kind of application the BS is also useful. Connect the
primary battery connection to the starter battery and the other connection to the
equipment. If now the engine is started the starter battery will reach 13,2V (26,4V)
and the Battery Separator will connect the equipment to the battery. So, you
don’t need necessarily 2 batteries!
Because the switching process takes place without signal
lines from the vehicle, iesy BS relays can easily be
connected, even in modern vehicles with CAN-BUS system is
possible!

Battery Guard Undervoltage protection for your battery
Preventing deep discharge of the battery!
The iesy universal programmable Battery Guard/Protect,
disconnect (without relay) the battery from non essential loads
before it is completely discharged (which would damage the
battery) or before it has insufficient power left to crank the engine
and protects electronic appliances against over voltage.
Fully programmable
The battery guard / protect can be set to engage / disengage at
several different voltages. The BG is microprocessor controlled
and is having 10 different programs to be chosen off.
Overvoltage protection
To prevent damage to your sensitive loads due too over voltage,
the load is disconnected whenever the DC-voltage exceeds 16V
(12V mode) or 32V (24V mode).
Ignition proof
No relay but MOSFET switches, and therefore no sparks!
Delayed alarm output (starting genset or battery charger)
The alarm output is activated if the battery voltage drops below
the preset disconnect level during more than 12 seconds. Starting
the engine, genset or battery charger will therefore not activate
the alarm. The alarm output is an open collector output to the
negative (minus) rail, max. current 500 mA. The alarm is typically
used to activate a buzzer and / or lamp.
A second application of this output is with the use of a relay. In
this application the BG should be programmed in programposition 12 (default is position 11). This way the relay will be
activated at alarm and when it reaches the upper voltage
threshold it will be deactivated again. This way the relay can be
used to activate a charger or generator.
BG 100 (100A, auto voltage detection 12/24Vdc)
Delayed load disconnect
Only 1 minute after the alarm has been activated the load will be
disconnected, but if the battery voltage increases to the connect
threshold within this minute (after the engine, genset or battery
charger has been started for example) the load will not be
disconnected.
iesy Battery Guard BG 10/18
The new Battery Guard BG10/BG18 (hereafter called BG) is an
intelligent, micro processor controlled, Battery Guard. The unit
has four faston connections, 2 Input and 2 Output connections,
to guarantee low losses. A yellow LED shows the status
(ON/OFF). In program- mode it shows the program position. The
BG has an 'Automatic Board system Detection'; the BG detects
which battery voltage (12 or 24V) is used. This does not need to
be programmed manually. There is a choice out of 10 on/off
threshold voltage programs, for both 12V and 24V, which can be
programmed in a simple way. The BG uses very little current.
During under voltage the BG uses just 2mA or less!

The new Battery Guard BG40/60/100/200 (hereafter called BG) is an

sensor (not included). The unit has two bolts as connection for the
Input+ and the Output+ to guarantee low losses. Other connections,

SmartFuse
(no relay but MOSFET switches, and therefore no sparks!)
The iesy SmartFuse is an Battery Guard/Protect + „Fuse“ which can detect
under voltage, over voltage, over current (overload) and disconnect the
circuit. The voltage- and current values are programmable. The SmartFuse
can be used with a (little) remote switch as a Battery(Main)Switch. Instead of
three different individual products, you have with one SmartFuse a reduction
in costs in purchasing and installation time.
After shutdown (SmartFuse) the consumers by under voltage from the
battery, the SmartFuse let charge current through to the battery from the
charger, while load is disconnected. For example, by a “combi” inverter
(inverter/charger/AC transfer switch combination) so that the battery can be
recharged. Only when the “on” voltage has reached from the SmartFuse,
then is it possible to get again current/power from the battery.
SmartFuse properties:
 Battery Guard/Protect which can detect under voltage, over voltage,
over current (overload) and disconnect the circuit.

 To connect the equipment safely without any spark at the battery

PIR (sensor) DC-Switch (PDS-10):
The iesy PDS-10 is a motion activated switch
for 12 and 24 Volt systems for which a
Passive Infra-Red Detector (PIR) is used. On
the output a load (e.g. lights or other
consumers) can be connected of max. to 10A
(continuous) in 12 or 24 V systems. Some
examples are: light on truck loading areas,
buses and ships.
In addition to the basic functions, the PDS-10
is to prevent some security features, like
disconnecting the load by overvoltage, under
voltage and overcurrent. Only for indoor use.

The iesy PLS-1 is a motion activated LED lamp for 12

Battery Equalizer
The Battery Equalizer is designed to provide a battery of
24 volts, which is composed of two batteries of 12 volts,
just to keep them equal in voltage.
Similar types of batteries, could be have after a while
different voltage values. Such (different) voltage can be
caused in part by different temperature of the batteries, or
modified the capacity. The Battery Equalizer ensures that
this problem is detected and corrected in time, prolonging
the life of the battery. Operation: this BE 24/1 "would
transfer" higher energy from one battery to another battery
with lower energy level, so the battery with the higher
"energy level" will not be overcharged!
PowerMonitor PM04/3:
The iesy PM04 is designed to check in series placed batteries. The
PM04 is suitable for 24 and 48 Volt systems. Hence 2 to 4 in series
placed batteries can be measured. The PM04 can produce an alarm
when an under- or over voltage occurs or an unbalance in the series
placed batteries. Also batteries that are charged can be checked
(Charge sensing), so in case of a failure the charge alarm is
activated.
The PM04 will keep the alarm status. In this way the mechanic can
establish the problem. Then the PM04 can be reset.
The PM04 is microprocessor controlled and can be (not free)
reprogrammed with different settings.
The PM04 gets its supply from the measured batteries and does not
need a separate power supply.
The PM04 has several potential free alarm contacts with which for
example a GSM system could be switched on.

What is the difference between linear and iesy switched-mode types DC / DC Converters?
For years, linear voltage reducers have been used to convert 24VDC to 12VDC. Linear reducers are technically
quite primitive, being, in effect, little more than a resistor. This method of reducing voltage has the disadvantage
of being very inefficient and, as a result, at least 50% of the input power is wasted and given off in the form of heat.
To deal with the heat a heat sink is required, increasing the overall size of the reducer and restricting the positioning
of it.
iesy Switched Mode Converters, however, work in a much more sophisticated and efficient way. At the input is a
switch (power FET) which converts the input voltage into a square wave. The square wave has a 50% duty cycle
(50% on, 50% off) and, when this signal is put through a rectifier with a capacitor, the output voltage is 50% of the
input voltage.
Because the resistance of the switch is low, power loss is reduced and efficiency as high as 95% can be achieved.
The greatest practical benefit of switch-mode reducers can be clearly shown as follows:
Example 1: 20 Amp linear converter supplying an average load of 50% (10 Amps):
Input power: 24Vx10A = 240Watts
Output power: 13,5Vx10A = 135 Watts
Power loss = 105 Watts
This means that, over the course of an 8 hour working day, 840 Watts of power is wasted.
Example 2: 20 Amp 85% efficient switched-mode converter supplying an average load of 50% (10A):
Output power: 13,5V x 10A = 135 Watts.
Input power: 135 Watts : 85 (% efficiency) x 100 = 158 Watts
Power loss = 23 Watts
The difference between linear and switched-mode reducers of the same power output is significant and, when
running at maximum load, switched-mode converters become even more efficient. In the above examples, the
switched-mode would use 82 Watts per hour less energy than the linear. Over the course of the year, the saving in
fuel costs alone would be considerable.
Other benefits of switched-mode converters are as follows:
-smaller size due to less need for heat dissipation;
-greater flexibility in choice of installation location;
-increased battery life
-longer life of the converter itself;
-low standby current drain.
A common problem with many switched-mode converters is that they create significant amounts of radio
interference, especially around 27MHz., the frequency used for CB radio. iesy converters are all heavily filtered and
are guaranteed not to produce such interference.
Difference, with or without galvanic isolation
Safe isolation. You have the choice. The iesy voltage converter with common ground of input and output (Not
Isolated) are of simple construction and therefore particularly compact and inexpensive.
Some vehicle manufacturers, however, require that the voltage converter must be against "mass loss" protection.
This means that the output voltage must not be exceeded, even if the mass on the supply and / or the output side is
no longer available. This request requires the isolated converters. Also prevented the isolated structure that can
occur in the event of an internal defect, a direct connection between input (e.g. 24V) and connected to the output
12V device.
