Microchip Technology has introduced a
stand-alone, integrated high-voltage line
driver, which designers can use to increase
the signal-to-noise ratio in advanced
projected-capacitive touch screens.
The MTCH652, which features an
integrated boost converter, can interface to
any touch controller via SPI to drive up to 19
Transmit channels at selectable voltages up
to 18V. An improved signal-to-noise ratio
makes the system more robust in noisy
environments, allows for the use of thicker
cover lenses, and reduces the number of
samples and the time required by the touch
controller to scan large displays.

Aavid Thermalloy has acquired Nuventix, the
manufacturer of fanless thermal
management solutions for LED lighting
applications. Nuventix is well known for its

reliable SynJet fanless air movers use
oscillating diaphragms, rather than frictional
parts, to create a constant flow of air over
the fins of compatible heat-sinks.

PRoC BLE (Programmable Radio-on-Chip
Bluetooth Low Energy) includes a 32-bit,
48MHz ARM® Cortex®-M0 core and a Bluetooth
Low Energy RF transceiver. The chip also
provides for CapSense® capacitive sensing, and
includes a 12-bit ADC, eight PWM modules, 36
GPIOs, an LCD controller, and a choice of I2C,
SPI, UART or I2S interfaces.
Cypress has equipped PRoC BLE with a
royalty-free BLE stack and BLE profiles
conforming to the Bluetooth 4.1 specification.
The Cypress solution offers three advantages
over other manufacturers’ BLE offerings. First, it
supports PSoC Creator, an easy-to-use, fully
integrated design environment for developing,
programming and testing a BLE application.
This includes an intuitive graphical user interface
with which the designer can configure the BLE
protocol stack and the required Bluetooth
profile in minutes.
In addition, the PRoC BLE, which includes an
integrated balun, only needs two external
components, whereas competitors’ BLE
devices require as many as nine. This means
that the RF circuit and antenna matching
network are much easier to design when using
the PRoC BLE.
Secondly, today’s Bluetooth devices such as
remote controls and mice often require a touchsensing input. With PRoC BLE, touch-sensing
control is fully integrated, and is
based on Cypress’s proven,
reliable capacitive sigma-delta
technology with GUI-based
configuration. The PRoC BLE
CapSense implementation
includes SmartSense Auto-tuning
and built-in two-finger gestures,
and provides market-leading
signal-to-noise ratio and water
tolerance.
The third advantage is the
built-in support for low-power
operation. Five easily configurable
power modes enable the
designer to optimise the system
design and prolong battery life.
The current in Deep Sleep mode
is just 1.3µA, and the device
draws an average of just 18.9µA
during a connection lasting 1s.
PRoC BLE is available in
56-pin QFN (7mm × 7mm) and
68-ball WLCSP (3.52mm ×
3.91mm) packages.

adds features and improves analogue
ATMEL
Atmel has introduced a new generation
of low-power 8-bit megaAVR MCUs,
based on its AVR® enhanced RISC
architecture. The first part to be
introduced, the ATmega168PB, is
available now, featuring 16kbytes of
Flash, 512bytes of
EEPROM and
1kbyte of RAM.
Additional
versions – the
ATmega48PB,
ATmega88PB and
ATmega328PB – will
be released in the first
half of 2015.
All new MEGA PB
MCUs include an AVR
core running at 20MHz and
featuring low-power picoPower
Technology. They also feature a 10-bit,
15ksamples/s ADC, a rail-to-rail analogue
comparator, real-time counter, and an RC
oscillator accurate to ±2% over the full voltage
and temperature range.
The new megaAVR MCUs also offer a
number of features not found in the existing
range of megaAVR devices:
• Unique serial number readable from
application code
• Wake-up from Power-down mode on receipt
of data at the USART interface
In addition, the ATmega328PB
also offers:
• QTouch peripheral touch
controller for buttons,
sliders, wheels and
proximity sensing

analogue
performance. For instance, at
±2% over the full voltage and temperature
range, the internal voltage reference is more
accurate. In addition, the analogue comparator
has a reduced offset at low signal levels, and
can deliver its result via GPIO.

Ultra-fast 600V IGBTs ideal for welding equipment

coefficient for easy paralleling. They also
feature a maximum junction temperature of
175°C and low EMI emissions.

the IRGP66xx, a series of highperformance 600V IGBTs. Featuring
extremely low conduction and
switching losses, the rugged, reliable
new family of devices is very well
suited to welding applications.
The IRGP66xx parts’ low conduction and
switching losses are attributable to the trench
thin-wafer technology used in their fabrication,
and contribute to the high efficiency with

Melexis has introduced an improved
version of its MLX92242 Hall-effect
switch/latch IC which enables easier
implementation and saves board space.
The MLX92242, which offers end-of-line
programmability and support for two-wire
operation, is widely used for position control
and position sensing, and as a contactless
switch. Accurately detecting the presence of a
magnetic field, it can be configured to switch in
magnetic fields ranging from 1mT to 64mT. A
magnetic latching range of -64mT to +64mT is
also achievable. The device’s built-in temperaturecompensation circuit counters the effects of
magnetic drift.
In the new version of the MLX92242, Melexis
has integrated a capacitor, so that the device can
be implemented directly into a design without
additional external components. The new
device is housed in the same industry-standard
TO-92/UA package as the original MLX92242.
The MLX92242 includes a Hall sensing
element, a voltage regulator accepting inputs of
2.7-24V, and a current sink-configured output

which end-of-line programming can be
executed, enabling the user to set magnetic
thresholds appropriate for the application.
In the new version of the MLX92242, the pin
ordering has been changed to provide for simpler
connection. The supply voltage and ground
pins are spaced 2.54mm apart so that they
match legacy fitting configurations, while also
simplifying assembly directly to lead frames and
insert-moulded connectors. This means that lead
forming, which could potentially compromise
the device’s operation, is not necessary.

arrangement, while still delivering full diagnostic

The ACPL-302J features an integrated flyback
controller for DC-DC converters and a full set
of fail-safe IGBT diagnostics, protection and
fault reporting, providing a complete and costeffective gate-drive solution. With a 2.5A railto-rail output, the device is ideal for driving
IGBTs and power MOSFETs in industrial power
inverters and motor drives.

AC-DC power supplies offer
improved no-load performance
CUI INC
CUI has expanded its VOF series of
compact, open-frame AC-DC power
supplies with new 100W, 120W and
150W models.
This second generation of open-frame power
supplies provides a number of improvements
over the company’s previous offerings,
including higher efficiency, improved no-load
performance and a boost in power.
The power supplies
can accommodate a
wide universal input
voltage of 90-277V AC
from a 47-63Hz supply,
offering compatibility
with mains power
worldwide.
The new VOF power
supplies are available
with a choice of output
voltages: 5V, 12V, 15V,
24V, 36V and 48V.
All models include output-voltage adjustability
of ±5%, set via an on-board potentiometer.
The VOF-100 is rated for operation at 100%
load and across a temperature range of -20°C
to 50°C with 6.7 cubic feet/minute of forcedair cooling. This load must be de-rated by
50% for operation at 60°C. The VOF-120 and
VOF-150 models operate with convection
cooling at 100% load from -20°C to 40°C,
also de-rating the load by 50% load at 60°C.
Operating at up to 90% efficiency, the new
VOF series features no-load power
consumption as low as 0.25W.
The VOF-150 model is equipped with active
power factor correction.
All models are packaged in industrystandard footprints. The VOF-100 measures 4”
x 2” x 1.32”, while the VOF-120 and VOF-150
models measure 5” x 3” x 1.32”.

powdered-iron-based Wireless Power
Consortium (WPC) compliant
transmitter coil, intended for use in
Qi-branded wireless charging pads.
The IWTX-4646BE-50 transmitter coil is a
complement to Vishay's WPC-compliant
wireless receiver coils. It provides an excellent
alternative to larger ferrite-based solutions,
which can become saturated in the presence

Atmel has expanded its SmartConnect
wireless portfolio with two new Wi-Fi®
System-on-Chip (SoC), and four new
modules featuring these SoCs. The
devices are ideal for battery-powered
Internet of Things (IoT) designs.
This can be controlled by any resourceconstrained MCU, since its application
programming interface only occupies a very
small memory footprint of 4kbytes Flash/ 1kbyte
RAM. The ATWINC1500 connects easily to
any Atmel AVR® or Atmel SMART MCU.
The most advanced mode supported by the
ATWILC1000 and ATWINC1500 is a single 1x1
802.11n stream providing up to 72Mbits/s
throughput. Both devices feature a fully
integrated power amplifier, low-noise amplifier,

The ATWILC1000 is a single-chip
IEEE® 802.11b/g/n link controller. The
ATWINC1500 is a single-chip IEEE

The ATWILC1000 link controller is
the ideal Wi-Fi companion to an
embedded processor, thanks to its
high-speed SPI and SDIO interfaces.
Users who want to implement their
own network stack on a host

ROHM has released the BD9901x, a
family of AEC-Q100-qualified synchronous buck converters which draw a
very low quiescent current of just 22µA
over the entire operating temperature
range of -40°C to 105°C.
The BD9901x devices include MOSFETs with
a typical low on-resistance of just 170mΩ for
the high-side P-channel MOSFET and 130mΩ
for the low-side N-channel device. The devices
can sustain a continuous output current of 2A
from a recommended supply range of 3.6-35V.
The BD99010 provides an output voltage of
3.3V, and the BD99011’s output is 5V.

Load Mode (SLLM) control scheme which

Infra-Red (IR) array which enables

data and detailed heat signatures

The improved FoV enables a single MLX90621
to simultaneously measure the temperature

driver, when the device is positioned on the
centre stack of the dashboard.
In control systems for air-conditioning units
in buildings, IR sensors have traditionally been

mechanical scanner, sweeping the target
cooling area. Because of the MLX90621’s
greater FOV, mechanical scanning is not
required and a single fixed device can measure
the whole area. This enables reductions in
cost, measurement time and system

applications operating at frequencies up

The BFU520, BFU530 and BFU550 series are
NPN silicon RF transistors for high-speed, lownoise applications housed in a plastic, four-pin,
dual-emitter SOT143B package. The devices
are also suitable for applications that feature
high supply voltages and high breakdown
voltages.
The typical minimum noise figure of the
BFU520 is rated at 0.65dB at 900MHz. In the
BFU530 and BFU550, it is 0.7dB also at
900MHz.
Maximum stable gain at 900MHz also
varies from device to device. In the BFU520,
it is 20dB, in the BFU530 it is 21.5dB, and in

TrenchFET® Gen IV N-channel
MOSFETs with an integrated driver

Capable of producing current higher than 60A
per phase, the SiC620 family operates at
switching frequencies as high as 1.5MHz. The

Connector for outdoor LED lighting carries IP67 rating

TE Connectivity has released an
extension to its SlimSeal SSL family of
connectors, a one-position, free-hanging
plug and receptacle assembly.
The low-profile connector was developed for
LED lighting applications, providing an IP67sealed, daisy-chained power connection
between multiple LED modules in a single light
fixture and the power source. Applications in
which this IP67-rated connector is useful include
street, tunnel, wall-wash, spot, flood and billboard
lighting fixtures. The connector is also suitable
for use in commercial refrigeration lighting.
Polarised connections eliminate the possibility
that the connector could be incorrectly mated.
Positive integral latching prevents inadvertent
unmating of connectors.
The SlimSeal SSL connector family is now
available in one-, two-, three- and four-position
variants in free hanging, wire-to-wire and wireto-board configurations. The connectors accept
18-20AWG and 22-24AWG stranded wire.

HIROSE
Hirose has introduced the DF61 series
to meet demand for compact, highpowered wire-to-board connectors
offering high reliability when used in
power supplies.
The connector range consists of headers,
sockets and crimp contacts that have the
capacity to handle currents of up to 5A.
The DF61 series has been designed with
space saving in mind: the
connector only occupies a
board footprint of 38mm², and
the profile is 2.38mm. This
small unit can handle the 5A
maximum rating per contact
even when connected to
AWG22 wire.
Hirose’s unique ‘Swing
Lock’ double-locking
mechanism offers a secure
connection. During the mating
operation, the receptacle is
inserted into the header at a
slight angle by offering the cable end in first.
This engages with a positive lock. The mating
operation is then finished by swinging the other
end of the receptacle in to engage with the
friction lock, which provides a tactile click
sensation to confirm correct mating. It also
prevents the receptacle from floating.
The positive lock can withstand a minimum
of 10N of cable-pull force, ensuring that the
socket cannot be accidentally removed from
the header. A small lever makes the un-mating
process quick and easy. A contact mating
length of 0.4mm ensures good electrical
continuity.
Blade contacts, renowned for their strength,
are used in the header to prevent damage
when subject to cable-wrenching forces. The
contacts are completely isolated to allow for a
long creepage distance and a high voltage
rating of 350V.
The termination contacts are fully moulded
into the insulator to prevent solder wicking.
The cable socket uses crimp contacts which
are positioned within a strengthened housing
lance, to ensure that the contact is retained in
the housing.

MultiTech Systems: A ‘Universal Machine’ for the industrial
Internet of Things
MULTITECH
‘Universal Machine’, a theoretical basis for all modern
computers, is a term that MultiTech is employing to
encapsulate the functionality and flexible performance of its
new MultiConnect® Conduit™, a visionary platform specifically
designed to enable the industrial Internet of Things (IoT).
The MultiConnect Conduit gateway is fully certified and carrier-approved
as an end-device. What distinguishes it from other gateway products is
the platform architecture, which was developed to meet a number of
criteria of high importance to developers and manufacturers of industrial
IoT devices.
The application is represented by a flow chart, and the code that
performs the various actions is embedded in an icon. These icons are
used to create associations between objects and to invoke various types
of actions. Icons can be edited in various ways, including:
• setting conditional statements
• reporting data to a preferred cloud platform, Dropbox or Twitter
• sending simple SMS/text-message confirmations
Open Development Environment
The platform is open not only on the hardware side, through the use of
interchangeable mCards, but also from a software and configurability
perspective. To meet the needs of a wide user group of software
engineers, systems integrators and IT professionals with different skill
sets and preferences, the Conduit platform features two main
development paths, as shown in Figure 2.
Advanced Wireless Connectivity
Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication has traditionally employed
Ethernet and other wired technologies. However, wireless technologies,
such as RF cable-replacement, have become an attractive alternative.
The Conduit gateway can be optimised for application connectivity by
populating the gateway with the appropriate mCards™, extension cards
that offer a variety of connectivity options, including both traditional wired
technologies such as Ethernet and serial cable, as well as advanced
wireless options such as Semtech’s LoRa™ long-range, low-power RF
technology.
LoRa technology offers important competitive benefits:
• robust performance even in noisy RF environments
• deep penetration into buildings and industrial structures
• extended battery life
The key advantages of deploying the Conduit with LoRa connectivity
include duplex communication and intelligence in the end points, known as
mDots™. Access to the mDot provides the ability to change the parameters
of the device, update firmware, and confirm the device is fully operational.
Intelligence in the mDots is provided to optimise data transmission.
Robust Management
Conduit provides an online application store for industrial things as a
platform for both developers and IT personnel to configure, deploy, and
manage their gateway and associated sensors and devices. The online
application-store model, on which this platform is based, has proved to
support an efficient distribution and management process.
Advanced Configurability
The graphical user interface gives individuals the ability to create
complex IoT applications quickly and easily using drag-and-drop icons.
With defined requirements, the user is able to develop the application
using an interface which is fast, intuitive, and similar to the other tools they
use to resolve networking problems. It is a visual design environment
which incorporates IBM’s Node-RED technology, as shown in Figure 1.

Open Linux: This environment encompasses a diverse group of IoT
applications and software developers. This development path is
extremely flexible to meet almost any application or developer need;
however, it also requires significant knowledge and programming skill.
• Environment comprised of core packages, utilities, drivers, an OS
distribution and customisation tools
• Supports C/C++, Python, Ruby, Pearl, C#, and a Java SDK
• Ability to port existing Linux applications with strong language
preferences
• Access to advanced utilities, custom drivers, and open-source
applications
Web Developer/IT: This environment is the simplest, from a
development perspective, and provides much native functionality.
• Contains core routing functions and features, browser-based
configuration, remote management functionality, and a development
sandbox
• Development sandbox exposes core device functionality through a
JavaScript API, along with graphical development tools
• Quickest and most cost-effective way to develop a typical IoT
monitoring and control application
Summary
MultiTech identified that machine-to-machine communications platforms
were approaching an inflection point. It recognised that for broad
adoption, platforms had to be flexible and affordable, which it enabled
through a comprehensive portfolio of plug-in mCards designed to
integrate with the MultiConnect Conduit gateway.

The interface makes it easy to wire together flows using the wide range of nodes in the palette. Flows
are then immediately pushed to deployed hardware.
In addition, it was important to meet the diverse needs of the softwaredevelopment community, while also enabling web developers and IT
personnel to easily create or modify applications using a drag-and-drop
interface. In doing so, MultiTech created a process that provides end-toend management of the edge network and its functionality. Finally, it
implemented the first online application store for industrial things to
accelerate IoT innovation, simplify deployment, and expand the
connected world.

Application Spotlight
A few years ago, the state of the art in user interfaces was
exemplified by the touchscreen, perfected in devices such as the
Apple® iPad®. Now it seems that a new shift is under way, and
that gesture control might be the next big thing in user interfaces.
This new trend is marked in this Application Spotlight by the
3DTouchPad from Microchip, as
featured below, a 2D multi-touch
input-sensing with 3D-gesture
sensing demonstration platform
for end-products such as
computer peripherals which
makes use of Microchip’s GestIC®
gesture-recognition technology.
The GestIC technology gives
devices the ability to accurately
track the movement of the user’s
hand or finger in the air.
‘Cool’ in the eyes of consumers, of course, but of great
functional benefit too. In industrial controls, for instance,
operators will be able to control electronic equipment while
wearing safety gloves. In hospitals, health professionals will be
able to use high-tech medical equipment without the risk of
picking up infections by touching the display screen.
The GestIC technology is based on near-field (e-field) sensing.
This Application Spotlight also shines a light on other types of
contactless technology for user interfaces. For instance, the
VL6180X module from STMicroelectronics, on page 22, is a
proximity sensor which measures the time taken for light
emitted by its integrated LED light
source to return to its light sensor.
Alternatively, the AS5600 from ams,
on page 19, uses changes in the
magnetic field sensed by on-chip Hall
elements to measure rotation. This is
being implemented in a new generation
of contactless knobs and dials,
replacing the old variable-resistance
technology found in potentiometers.
Potentiometers are notoriously prone to
failure due to mechanical wear and
contamination affecting the contacting wiper. A contactless pot
based on a combination of the AS5600 and a cheap two-pole
magnet is immune to contamination and wear, and provides a
quick and accurate response to user inputs.

World first as development platform combines
support for 2D multi-touch and 3D gestures

Microchip has introduced the
3DTouchPad, a development platform
for 2D multi-touch and 3D gestures
which functions as a PC peripheral.
The 3DTouchPad includes a 6” diagonal sensor
board with Microchip’s 2D and 3D gesturesensing components integrated
into a circuit board on the
underside. The touch pad
comes with a USB cable for
connection to a PC and a
development software package
to enable designers to
experiment with built-in
gestures and to develop
gestures of their own.
The 3DTouchPad’s robust 3D
capability is based on
Microchip’s GestIC® technology,
which detects 3D gestures over
a range of up to 10cm. The
3DTouchPad also benefits from
Microchip’s highly responsive
projected-capacitive 2D multi-
touch circuitry, which supports up to ten touch
points and multi-finger surface gestures.
In the 3DTouchPad, the 2D multi-touch
capability is backed by Microchip’s new
capacitive touch-screen line driver, the MTCH652.
The new 3DTouchPad includes driverless,
out-of-the-box features for the Windows® 7
and Windows 8.x and the Apple® MacOS® X
operating systems. The product is also provided
with a free downloadable GUI and a software
development kit with application-programming
interfaces.

NFC tag IC connects an MCU to any
NFC phone or reader wirelessly

The M24SR64 from STMicroelectronics
is a dynamic NFC/RFID tag IC with an
I2C interface and embedded EEPROM
memory.
This same memory can be accessed by an
NFC phone or reader and by an I2C host, such
as a microcontroller. This means that the
device can be used as a bi-directional,
contactless bridge between an
MCU-based system and an RFID
reader or NFC host device, such
as a smartphone or tablet
computer.
The M24SR64’s RF interface
is based on the ISO/IEC 14443
Type A (RFID) standard. The
device is also compatible with
the NFC Forum Type 4 tag
specifications, and supports all
the relevant commands.
The M24SR64 uses the NFC
forum NDEF message protocol,
which can launch an instruction
to a smartphone to act.
Such actions can include:
• to go to a specific internet address (URL)
• to send an email to a specific address
• to launch an application and exchange data
The I2C interface uses a two-wire serial
interface consisting of a bi-directional data line
and a clock line. Each M24SR64 device carries
a built-in 4-bit device-type identifier code in
accordance with the I2C bus protocol.
The device behaves as a slave in an I2C
system. The management of the interface
selection is controlled by the M24SR64 itself.

Position sensor offers durable, contactless
replacement for potentiometers

The new AS5600 from ams is a
magnetic rotary position sensor which
makes it easier than ever before to
replace a traditional potentiometer with
a more reliable contactless alternative.
To appeal to manufacturers and users of
potentiometers, the AS5600 features a
ratiometric output, mirroring the output of a
potentiometer, which is a variable resistor. This
means that users of a potentiometer do not
need to change the application code running
on their microcontroller when they replace it
with a design based on an AS5600. Offering
precise 12-bit resolution over a full 0-360°
rotation, the AS5600 can measure angular
displacement in any application currently using
a potentiometer, including rotary knobs and
dials.
By pairing the AS5600 with a low-cost twopole magnet, design engineers can implement
an angle-measurement system at a similar
cost to that of a mid-range potentiometer.
At the same time, the contactless sensing
method used in the AS5600 offers superior
reliability to a potentiometer’s contacting
method. Unlike a potentiometer, in which a
mechanical wiper slides along a conductive
armature, a magnetic position sensor senses
rotary motion by measuring changes in the
magnetic field generated by the paired magnet.
This field-sensing method is unaffected by
dust, dirt, humidity, moisture or vibration
conditions which all tend to distort or disable a
potentiometer’s measurement operations.
While offering better performance and reliability
than a potentiometer, the AS5600 has also
introduced new power-saving modes which
enable it to rival the low power consumption of
a potentiometer. It implements four powersaving modes, and automatically switches to
the lowest-power mode after one minute of
inactivity. In this mode, the AS5600 draws a
maximum of just 1.5mA.

The PCAL95xx from NXP
Semiconductors is a series of lowvoltage 8- and 16-bit General Purpose
Input/Output (GPIO) expanders for I2C
or SMBus applications.
NXP’s GPIO expanders provide a simple
means to add I/Os while keeping
interconnections to a minimum. In addition to
providing a flexible set of GPIOs, a wide
supply voltage range allows the PCAL95xx
devices to interface with the latest
microprocessors and microcontrollers, which
have relatively low-voltage power circuits, as
well as 3.3V or 5V devices.
The PCAL95xx devices contain a set of four
pairs of 8-bit configuration, input, output, and
polarity-inversion registers.
Some also have Agile I/O, which adds features
such as:
• programmable output-drive strength
• latchable inputs
• programmable pull-up/pull-down resistors
• maskable interrupt
• interrupt status register
• programmable open-drain or push-pull
outputs
The device outputs have 25mA sink capabilities
for directly driving LEDs while drawing a low
device current.
NXP also supplies the PCAL6408A and
PCAL6416A, GPIO expanders which have a
built-in level-shifting capability. This makes the
devices flexible when used in mixed-signal
environments in which communication
between incompatible I/O voltages is required.
Their wide supply-voltage range of 1.65-5.5V

Sensor module captures reliable proximity and

The new VL6180X module from
STMicroelectronics provides a complete
solution for implementing accurate
proximity measurement and ambient
light sensing.
Combining an infra-red emitter, a range sensor
and an ambient light sensor in a ready-to-use
package, the VL6180X is easy
to integrate and saves the endproduct designer the need to
make long and costly optical
and mechanical refinements.
The VL6180X is the latest
product to be based on ST’s
patented FlightSense™
technology. This is a method
which allows absolute distance
to be measured without
distortion caused by the target’s
reflectance.
Unlike other methods which
estimate proximity by measuring
the amount of light reflected

from the object – which is heavily influenced by
its colour and surface characteristics – the
VL6180X measures the time the light takes to
travel to the nearest object and return to the
sensor. This time-of-flight method provides for
more reliable proximity measurements.
The module is designed for ultra low-power
operation. Ranging and ALS measurements
may be automatically performed at userdefined intervals. Multiple threshold and
interrupt schemes are supported to minimise
calls on a design’s host controller.

of MEMS motion sensors, the
LIS2HH12 offers full-scale
measurement ranges of ±2g, ±4g or
±8g. It can measure acceleration at
output data rates from 10Hz to 800Hz.
Sensitivity when measuring over a
full scale of ±2g is rated at a typical
0.061mg/digit. The typical 0g level
offset of ±30mg can be eliminated by
enabling the built-in high-pass filter.
Intended for use in battery-powered
and handheld devices, the LIS2HH12
makes efficient use of power, drawing
just 180µA even when sampling at the
maximum 800Hz data rate. In powerdown mode the device draws just 5µA.

user to check the functioning of the sensor in
the final application before shipping.

The PTN3460 from NXP Semiconductors
is an embedded DisplayPort (DP)-toLVDS bridge that enables connectivity
between an embedded DP source
and an LVDS display panel. It
processes the incoming DP stream,
performs DP-to-LVDS
protocol conversion, and
transmits the processed
stream in the LVDS format.
The device has two high-speed
ports: a Receive port facing the
DP source, such as a generalpurpose processor or graphics
processor, and a Transmit port
facing the LVDS receiver, such as an
LVDS display-panel controller.
It can receive a DP stream at link rates
of 1.62Gbits/s or 2.7Gbits/s, and can support
one- or two-lane DP operation.
In addition, the PTN3460 supports single-bus
or dual-bus LVDS signalling with colour depths
of 18 bits per pixel or 24 bits per pixel, and a
pixel-clock frequency up to 112MHz. LVDS
data packing can be done either in VESA or
JEIDA format.

Accelerometer/gyroscope system-inpackage supports always-on sensing
Since power consumption is as low as 0.6mA
in normal operation, the LSM6DS3 can provide
always-on sensing while benefitting from the
low-noise measurement capabilities of the
gyroscope and accelerometer.
In human-machine interface designs, engineers
can use the LSM6DS3 to detect orientation
and gestures. This provides application
developers with features and capabilities more
sophisticated than today’s simple display
orientation in portrait/landscape mode.

The new six-axis LSM6DS3 from
STMicroelectronics is a system-inpackage featuring a high-performance,
three-axis digital accelerometer and a
three-axis digital gyroscope.
For instance, event-detection interrupts enable
efficient and reliable motion tracking and
contextual awareness. The device can support
the hardware recognition of free-fall events, 6D
orientation, tap and double-tap sensing, activity
or inactivity, and wake-up events.
The LSM6DS3 can efficiently run the sensorrelated features specified in the Android™
platform, saving power and enabling faster
reaction time. In particular, the LSM6DS3 has
been designed to implement hardware features
such as significant motion, tilt, pedometer and
time stamping, and to support the dataacquisition functions of an external
magnetometer.
Like ST’s other MEMS sensor modules, the
LSM6DS3 draws on robust and mature inhouse manufacturing processes. In addition,
the various sensing elements are manufactured
using special micro-machining processes, while
the IC interfaces are based on CMOS
technology, which allows for the design of a
dedicated circuit trimmed to better match the
characteristics of the sensing element.
The LSM6DS3 is available in a plastic land
grid array package measuring 2.5mm x 3.0mm
x 0.83mm.
