SOLAR ACCESSORIES

ASNZS 5033 says that solar module connectors must match brand and type. EG: You cannot plug an MC4 into a KSK4. One solution is to fit your own connectors at the end of each string, however this may void the module warranty (check with your supplier).

OutBack follows up on its original FLEXmax design with another first: an outdoor-rated charge controller with unprecedented thermal management capabilities designed for the most extreme environmental conditions.

The FLEXmax Extreme is engineered around the concept that the strongest chain is one with no weak link. In the case of charge controller design, the weak link is typically the cooling fan. Removing the fan removes the greatest obstacle to long service life and high reliability, as fan problems severely limit power output.

FLEXmax Extreme’s advanced thermal engineering provides full power output from -20 to 45°C without requiring a cooling fan. And because a passively cooled unit can be sealed, circuit boards and other sensitive electronics are protected from dust, dirt, insects, and other external sources of contamination.

Installer features of the FLEXmax Extreme include: “ground-agnostic” design to support negative-, positive-and floating-ground systems, substantial wire-bending space, oversized terminals for easy installation with large gauge wire, and mechanical design that permits servicing and replacing all power components while the unit is mounted on a wall and attached to conduit.

MATE3

The MATE3 advanced systems display and controller offers more comprehensive programming and detail from your OutBack Power system than the previous MATE models.

The expandable SD card memory allows you to increase data logging capacity as well as upgrade units in the field. The MATE3 is an internet enabled device. Simply connecting to the internet will allow remote system monitoring via an easy-to-use web interface.

MATE B and MATE2

The MATE B and MATE2 system display and controllers are complete management tools for your OutBack Power system.

Through the use of a single MATE you can remotely manage and monitor multiple inverter/chargers, charge controllers and monitoring devices.

A built-in clock and calendar function enables timer-based programming of inverter and charger operation. This permits you to set the system to work with time-of-day power rates or to limit a generator’s run time to a specific time period of the day or week.

All of your settings are stored in permanent memory to eliminate the need to reprogram in the event of a system shutdown or battery replacement.

HUB4 and HUB10.3

The HUB system communications managers are the backbone of your networked Outback Power conversion system.

The Outback HUB communicates stacking, load share and power save off/on signals. Interconnection cabling is standard Ethernet

CAT5 with RJ45 modular jacks. Through the use of a HUB, your system is completely co-ordinated and managed by the MATE.

The HUB is available with 4 ports (HUB4) for connection of up to any 4 combinations of Inverter/Chargers, Charge Controllers and

FN-DC’s plus one MATE port or with 10 ports (HUB10.3).

BATTERY CHARGERS

The ePOWER Battery Charger is a fully automatic, “set and forget” charger. It is designed to quickly and accurately recharge your batteries using algorithms that help maximize service life. Multistage smart charging technology enables the charger to be connected to your battery banks permanently. As dictated by battery manufacturer’s recommendations, batteries require a multistage charge sequence for perfect, fast and accurate charging. The ePOWER multistage smart chargers deliver four primary charge stages:-

Stage 1 - Bulk or Boost Charge: The battery is charged at full rated output current of the charger until the battery reaches its final charging voltage, known as its absorption voltage. In this step, around 80% of the battery capacity is recovered as fast as possible.

Stage 2 - Absorption Charge: With the charger voltage held steady, the remaining 20% is replaced allowing the current to drop as the battery approaches its full charge.

Stage 3 - Float: Finally in the float stage, the charger voltage is lowered and held at a constant and safe predetermined level. This prevents the battery from being overcharged while supporting any additional loads connected to the battery, such as DC lighting and refrigerators. This stage allows for the charger to be used as a DC power supply.

Stage 4 - Maintenance: This stage is a regular timed “return to bulk” stage.

After 7 days of constant operation in “float” the ePOWER Battery Charger will switch the charger from float to bulk to agitate the batteries electrolyte helping to provide an extended service life.

BOGART ENGINEERING offers several models of Battery Monitor which are designed to help you

maintain batteries which are periodically charged and discharged such as in solar or wind powered homes, motorhomes or boats.

The TriMetric will be the choice for most battery systems in homes, motorhomes and boats where the owner does not need the greater data logging and analysis capability that the PentaMetric has. The PentaMetric may be appropriate for larger systems or for systems owned by technical users who are interested in more system detail.

Both monitors show you the following:

Flow of energy in or out of the batteries (in amps or watts) so you can check your charging sources or elec-

• trical loads.

Battery volts

Battery state of charge (i.e., how much energy is left in the batteries)

How recently since you fully charged the batteries (which is useful because lead acid batteries (flooded/

GEL/AGM) should not go too long between being fully charged.

Displays replaced percentage of charge, compared to most recent discharge. Many battery company experts are now recommending that when recharging, 110-120% of recently withdrawn energy should be replaced for wet cell

Lead acid batteries to prevent loss of capacity, and 104-

108% for AGM types. This new function makes it easy to know if they have been sufficiently charged.
