The Maxview high quality 75ohm Contract UHF TV Aerials are available in either 10,

14 or 18 element grouped (A, A37, B, C/D, E) or wideband (WB) yagi configuration.

They are manufactured from high quality corrosion resistant aluminium and have radiused and flanged elements. Their compact construction results in reduced wind loading. The waterproof insulator housing has screw terminals for easy connection and installation.

All Contract UHF TV Aerials come complete with a good quality folded tubular dipole for the driven element, aerial clamp and a reflector. The 18 element models also have a centre mount for extra support and to allow centre or rear mounting. All models have been performance measured and tested in accordance with BS5640 Part 1:1984.

We recommend that these brackets are installed in accordance with the latest CAI code of practice. The use of mortar courses for fasteners should be avoided when mounting. The brackets should be fixed with at least four expansion type bolts, or through bolted.

The Cradle Chimney Bracket description gives the length of contact to the chimney stack. The Double Lashing Chimney Bracket description gives the distance that the brackets holds the mast from the chimney.

We recommend that these brackets are installed in accordance with the latest CAI code of practice. The top of the lashing bracket should be at least 3 courses of brickwork from the top or not less than 250mm from the top of the stack.

The Maxview range of Masthead Bandpass Filters has been specifically designed for digital installations. They are available in grouped (A, B, C/D, E, Part K) or wideband

(WB) versions. All models are fully screened to EN50083-2 and are designed and optimised specifically for use as high performance passive front-end filters for both

MATV and domestic UHF TV systems. The filters have low insertion loss and sharp roll off outside the band edges. They are intended to greatly reduce any unwanted signals just below or above the wanted UHF TV group so as to provide clean interference free

(off air) analogue and digital UHF TV signals for the distribution network.

All of the Masthead Bandpass Filters are designed for indoor or outdoor use and for mounting close to the aerial. They are designed for mast fixing with the releasable cable tie provided or for wall fixing using the drill out tabs. The snap lock latches and cable guides on the weatherproof outer housing and ‘F’ type RF connectors on the diecast inner housing ensure a quick, easy and precise installation.

The Maxview range of UHF wideband Masthead Amplifiers have been designed to improve signal performance in weak UHF TV signal areas. They are optimised for all analogue and digital terrestrial UHF TV system applications with low noise figures and good UHF input and output signal handling characteristics for a large dynamic range.

The ‘PRECISION’ models are fully screened to EN50083-2 and suitable for use in either professional MATV or domestic systems. They are designed for mast fixing with the releasable cable tie provided or for wall fixing using the drill out tabs. The medium gain 13dB gain amplifier provides excellent performance in domestic and all MATV systems. For longer cable runs in either small or larger systems, the high gain 23dB amplifier is ideally suited. The high gain amplifier is also provided with a cascade line power option for extremely weak signal or longer cable run installations.

The Maxview Grouped Masthead Diplexers provide separate high and low channel grouped UHF TV inputs. The high and low channel inputs are combined using very high performance diplexer filters. The frequency response on the low channel input extends down to Band I, making it ideally suited for precombined VHF FM signals.

The passive diplexers are designed for combining UHF TV signals from two different channel groups and are intended for indoor or outdoor domestic use, mounted close to the aerial. Through line powering from the output to either or both channels is available as an option thus allowing low noise amplification to be added for weak UHF

TV signal reception areas or installations with longer cable runs.

The modular MATV amplifier range from Maxview has been designed and optimised specifically for use as high performance DTT and analogue split band signal amplifiers in small and medium sized VHF/UHF MATV systems, or as final high level head amplifiers in a channelised MATV system. The VHF and UHF amplifier products provide the combination of very low noise figures and high output signal handling together with 20dB of gain adjustment correctly located for DTT applications after the input stage. Because of the low noise figures and good signal handling characteristics, all the amplifiers have excellent input and output dynamic range, allowing them to be connected directly to the aerial. Alternatively, if the aerial is some distance away from the main headend distribution amplifier they can be connected via a low gain

Masthead Amplifier using the built in selectable +12V d.c. line power option.

All the VHF amplifiers can be cascaded, are fully screened to EN50083-2 and are designed for indoor use and require a +12V d.c. regulated power source from the associated PSU350 power supply. System flexibility is assured and costs minimised as both the MATV amplifier and +12V d.c. regulated power supply PSU350 are available as separate replacement items.

If a system requires more than one UHF headend amplifier e.g. dual trunk headend feeds to be employed, and the combined d.c. power consumption is less than 350mA at +12V, then an optional 2 way d.c. phono splitter lead is available.

For example:

A Single PSU350 Power Supply is capable of powering any of the following MATV

Amplifier modules/Masthead combinations.

1. Any Maxview 22dB, 32dB or 38dB Amplifier module + UHF Masthead requiring

130mA or less at +12V.

2. Any permutation of 2 x 32dB UHF or VHF amplifier modules + UHF Masthead requiring 50mA or less at +12V using the 2 way phono splitter lead BP4063

(separate PSU for each amplifier can also be used if desired).

3. 1 x 22dB, 32dB or 38dB UHF module + 1 x MAA32V VHF/UHF module +

MHA9U/S 9dB or MHA13U/S UHF Masthead (25mA) using the 2 way phono d.c.

splitter lead BP4063 (Separate PSU for each amplifier can also be used if desired).

N.B One PSU350 is not capable of powering 2 x 38dB Amplifier modules, two separate PSU350’s must be used.

They are intended for indoor use only and the 2m long d.c. lead enables optimum positioning of the associated MATV amplifier module. The PSU350M comes complete with mounting bracket.

The PSU350L and PSU350M are fully electronically interchangeable and mechanically compatible with the Maxview LPI350 Line Power Injector Unit. When these two units are used together they produce a fully screened single output high current regulated Power Supply Unit (MHPL1/350) which provides +12V regulated d.c. voltage at up to 350mA of current. The Maxview range of high performance indoor Splitters has been specifically selected for use with digital satellite and digital terrestrial UHF TV systems (MATV,

SMATV, CATV and IRS).

All the Splitters have a frequency range of 5-2300MHz and are housed in a die-cast fully screened alloy casting to EN50083-2 with ‘F’ type RF connectors and mounting lugs. All models have an earth bond provision and are for indoor use only.

The splitters are available in 2 and 4 way versions. The splitters have excellent output to output isolation and low insertion losses. The MAS2 and MAS4 have power pass on input to output port 1 only. The MAS2PP has power pass on input to both outputs.

The 1.1kg compact, easy to use meter comes complete with mains and vehicle charger/adaptor and removable side pocket for tools and accessories.

2 Way Phono d.c. Splitter Lead - If a system requires more than one MATV headend amplifier e.g dual trunk headend feeds to be employed, and the combined d.c. power consumption is less than 350mA at +12V, then an optional 2 way d.c. splitter lead is available.

Line Power Injector Unit - It is 5-2300MHz fully screened and can be used together with the PSU350L and PSU350M Power Supply Units to produce a single output high current regulated Power Supply Unit (MHPL1/350) which provides +12V regulated d.c.

voltage at up to 350mA of current.

The Maxview HGB range of high gain signal boosters include 1, 2, 3 & 4 outlet models. The switched gain is located after the 1st gain stage making the amplifiers ideal for DTT applications, for boosting weak UHF TV and FM/DAB radio signals. The amplifiers are designed for continuous indoor use and are fitted with a mains lead and plug enabling them to be located away from the mains socket.

The amplifiers are fully screened, comply with the EU safety (LVD) and EMC

Directives and are suitable for professional MATV and domestic systems. For optimum screening performance all unused outputs should be fitted with 75ohm coaxial loads.

The 5-65MHz return path on 2 outputs of the Digital Signal Booster is compatible with equipment returning an RF return path with d.c. powering and s/c protection such as

Sky Digi-Eye/Digi-Box installation. The baseband IR return path on 2 outputs provides full compatibility with most IR extender systems.

The Maxview DSB1 is a medium gain booster with a low noise figure, designed specifically to boost weak digital terrestrial UHF TV signals. It is ideal to use with a set top UHF TV aerial to supply digital terrestrial television signals to a TV not already receiving the digital signal from an external aerial. It is designed specifically for continuous indoor use and it comes complete with separate 12V regulated plug-in style power supply.

The Maxview PSBL range of VHF/UHF amplifiers have fixed gains and provide excellent performance in smaller distribution systems utilising relatively short cable runs. The amplifiers are designed for indoor continuous use and come complete with mains power lead fitted with a moulded mains plug.

A broadband VHF/UHF response and built in low loss splitters make them perfect either to boost UHF TV, FM and/or DAB VHF radio signals up to four outlets or as building blocks in much larger networks. All models have low noise figures combined with good signal handling capability which aid excellent TV and radio reception. All the VHF/UHF amplifier models are fully screened, and comply with the EU Safety

(LVD) and EMC Directives and are suitable for use in professional MATV and domestic systems. For optimum screening performance all unused outputs should be fitted with

75ohm coaxial loads.

The Maxview high level, variable gain, VSB1-4 VHF/UHF distribution amplifier models provide excellent performance in small headend or domestic systems, or those systems utilising longer cable runs. The Variable Gain Amplifier models provide excellent performance in small and medium sized distribution systems. The Variable

Gain Amplifiers are broadband making them ideal to boost UHF TV, FM and/or DAB

VHF radio signals through up to four outlets. The combination of high gain with excellent signal handling together with built in precision 75ohm variable attenuator which provides up to 20dB of gain adjustment, allows reception to be optimised under very strong signal conditions.

They are designed for indoor continuous use and come complete with a power lead fitted with a moulded mains plug. The Variable Gain VHF/UHF Amplifiers are fully screened, comply with the EU Safety (LVD) and EMC Directives and are suitable for use in professional MATV and domestic systems. In order to achieve optimum performance and to provide the best interference free reception we recommend that these guidelines are followed when installing VHF/UHF

Domestic or MATV systems.

A. VHF AND UHF AERIALS

1. Mount the aerial combination as high as possible with a clear line of sight towards the transmitter.

2. Always place the largest aerial at the bottom, with the smallest at the top. This reduces bending forces and the stresses on the mast and will provide the best mechanical installation. See CAI Codes of Practice for SMATV/MATV Systems.

3. Place the lowest aerial on a mast at least half wavelength distance above the roof of the house. At Band I this distance is 1.6m, at Band 3 80cm, Group A 32cm and 17cm

Group D.

4. For multi aerial installations it is essential to maintain a minimum distance between two UHF aerials on a mast in order to minimise interaction between them. See table

‘Recommended minimum distances between aerials’, for further guidance. This does not apply to aerial arrays where two or more aerials of the same type are deliberately coupled together to improve reception problems in more difficult reception areas. If masthead amplifiers are used it may be necessary to increase the minimum distance accordingly.

B. MASTHEAD FILTERING AND AMPLIFICATION

1. In order to minimise potential pick up, install the aerial combination and coaxial downleads away from mobile radio transmitting aerials or other sources of electrical interference such as overhead signal, telephone or power cables.

2. Use only fully screened masthead filters and amplifiers that comply with

EN50083-2.

3. The use of a high rejection masthead bandpass filter such as the MHF series, positioned close to the UHF aerial, before any other amplifiers or filters in the system, will minimise any unwanted out of band interference being picked up by the UHF aerial.

4. If the installation requires a masthead amplifier, for the best results fit the masthead amplifier no closer than 50cm and no more than 1m from the associated aerial.

5. In very weak analogue signal areas, masthead amplifiers can be cascaded. Ensure that there is a minimum of approx. 10-15m of cable between amplifiers connected in cascade.

C. DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL DOMESTIC AND MATV INSTALLATIONS

INTRODUCTION

Before commencing any DTT/Analogue MATV installations or system planning we strongly recommend that the reader is familiar with the essential DTT reception information contained in the following DTG publications: a) R-Book 2: Installing Digital Terrestrial Television - Domestic Systems b) R-Book 3: Installing Digital Terrestrial Television - MATV Systems c) R-Book 4: Installing Digital Television - Integrated Reception Systems

The DTT signals are typically transmitted 15-25dB below the power of the analogue signals from the same site, but in some circumstances, the difference in transmitted power level can be significantly greater.

N.B. Due to propagation effects etc, the difference in received power levels at the aerial may be higher or lower than the theoretical figures quoted for the transmitter.

The importance of correct DTT system planning cannot be over emphasised, the digital levels quoted are correct at the time of compiling this guide. However the levels and C/N may be subject to change.

30 a) If you have not got sufficient signal level or C/N when measured at the aerial output then the installation is not suitable for DTT reception. Either the size of the

UHF TV aerial and/or position of the aerial will need to be changed.

b) You MUST use a meter specifically designed and calibrated for DTT when measuring DTT levels and C/N. E.g. TDA6UK Terrestrial Digital/Analogue Signal

Meter available from Maxview. It is also very desirable to use a meter with a spectrum analyser display in order to check channel flatness and help identify interfering signals, overload effects and so on. Most meters are calibrated to read accurately when connected directly after the aerial. You will need to contact the meter supplier to obtain the correction factors when measuring C/N immediately after a masthead amplifier.

c) A useful indication of signal level and signal quality on a channel by channel basis can be obtained by using the set up menu of the DTT receiver.

C/N of 30dB is required.

** The terms fail, marginal and pass indicate the likelihood of a reliable picture.

A pass should give reliable, fault free reception. A marginal C/N could produce a reliable picture much of the time, but break up (in the form of blocking) to no picture at all under adverse conditions. Fail indicates at best frequent disturbances to reception, or no service at all.

The C/N directly off the aerial can never be improved by adding an amplifier after the aerial, only the system C/N or the C/N at the outlet plate/STB can be improved. Consider the example of a Group C/D DTT signal and an installation with relatively high downlead cable loss.

If the TV aerial is some distance away from the main head-end distribution amplifier then cable losses between the aerial and MATV amplifier will degrade the system C/N.

In such situations we recommend the use of a low gain UHF Masthead Amplifier with high signal handling capabilities such as the 13dB Masthead MHA13U/S with 2ch

3. DTT SYSTEM PLANNING AND COMPONENTS

Plan the amplifier gains, signal handling and system losses (cable downleads, taps etc.) to achieve the target DTT signal levels and C/N at each outlet plate in the system. One of the best and most cost effective ways to achieve the target levels and C/N at the outlet plate is to use wideband UHF Digital MATV amplifiers such as the MAA range.

It is advisable to plan the network step by step as follows:

a) Measure the levels and C/N at the aerial. If you have not got sufficient signal level or C/N at the aerial output then the installation is not suitable for DTT reception.

Either the size of the UHF TV aerial and/or position of the aerial will need to be changed.

b) Check the flatness of each DTT channel using a good spectrum type meter.

c) The aerial should have a balun and have good gain and directional properties.

d) In adjacent DTT coverage areas where the same channel number is used, it will be necessary to use an extremely directional aerial such as the ALP28W Log Periodic.

e) Use grouped equipment if ALL DTT and analogue channels are within the same

UHF group.

f) Use a high performance fully screened bandpass filter such as the Maxview MHF range after the aerial to remove unwanted out of band signals e.g. mobile radio,

Tetra signals etc.

g) Reduce the passive system loss either by using lower loss cable or multiple trunk cables with separate amplifiers, this will give improved C/N at the Outlet plates.

h) Use lower gain Digital MATV amplifiers designed for DTT systems with low NF that provide BOTH excellent INPUT and OUTPUT signal handling e.g. the Maxview MAA range.

i) De-rate amplifiers for more analogue channels using the 10 log (N-I) rule, e.g. for 5 channels de-rate output level by 6dB.

j) Use a low gain (<15dB), fully screened high signal handling Masthead to improve system C/N if losses between UHF aerial to headend are significant or if more system gain is required for larger MATV networks.

k) Use good quality screened cable that complies with BS EN 50117 for the coaxial downleads and to BS EN 60966 for the coaxial flyleads throughout the installation.

l) Typical Coax cable loss in dB/100m at 800MHz for DS81 = 23dB CT/DS100 = 18dB

CT125 = 15dB CT165 = 12dB.

m)Use fully screened outlet plates and accessories that comply with EN50083-2 n) Install broadband Taps or Splitters that operate up to 2.3GHz, such as the MAT and

MAS range. This and the correct coaxial trunk cable will help to ensure that the

MATV system is IRS ready.

Do not forget to keep the analogue levels between 60 and 80dBuV at the outlet plate.

At some outlet plates it may be necessary to fit an inline attenuator to prevent overloading the STB or iDTV if the analogue TV levels are above 80dBuV.
