Noise levels in hospitals have
doubled in the last few years.
Research confirms that noise creates patient anxiety. Hospital noise levels reach
72dB during the day and 60dB at night, far exceeding the WHO standard of 40 dB.
Passive acoustics enables the absorption and blocking of sound within and between
spaces. The provision of the right acoustic performance from a suspended ceiling
can help patient privacy through sound insulation between spaces and the control of
reverberation times within spaces.

instructions and dispensing
increase as noise levels go up.
Noise affects communication between nurses and doctors, nurses and patients. For
effective communication the patient and hospital staff needs to be heard clearly at
normal volume without difficulty or stress. A better speech intelligibility is achieved
by having the correct amount of sound absorbing material within the space for its
intended purpose.
Noise causes up to 30% of patient
awakenings.
Sleep is absolutely crucial for recovery. It's when we regenerate, when we rebuild
ourselves, and when the quality of sleep is degraded, and so is our recovery. The
sound reduction performance of separating elements, which may include ceilings, is

CHALLENGES IN HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
Hospitals look antiseptic.
Creation of a warm and welcoming environment is essential to healing. Most of
visitors are restricted within few of the area in a hospital. These high traffic areas
include reception areas, waiting rooms, patient rooms and Out Patient Departments
(OPD). While the key attribute of these areas is acoustic intelligibility/ comfort,

Lighting systems also have a positive impact and effect on a building’s occupants.
While natural daylight is a very important factor for patients and staff, high
reflectance ceilings systems that provide a softer, more evenly distributed light can
help create an environment of visual comfort in a space, reducing eyestrain and
increasing employee effectiveness.

controlled.

1. In relation to hygiene, the control of bio contamination and disinfection are of
prime importance, to prevent the spread of infectious gents
also the deveopment of fungi/mould or yeast. Acoustic ceilings that
prevent the build-up of bacteria, mould and yeast must be used.
2. A very high level of control in air quality and air pressure in hospials,
clean-rooms and associated controlled environments as well as in
food-preparation areas must be achieved. Limitation of dust and
microbial development has become critical. Ceiling product that resist
the settlement of micro-organisms that land on the surface of the tile
must be used.
3. Washability, stain resistance and water repellency are key in the
choice of materials for maintenance. Ceiling products which provide
excellent water-repellency allowing for frequent cleaning with a wet
cloth or sponge or where required with high pressure water must be
fitted.

To promote occupant well-being & quicker recovery of patients. At the

Design all occupied spaces in the building to meet the acoustical, sound
insulation and noise control requirements as per National Building Code
(NBC) part 8, Building Services Section 4 - Acoustics Sound Insulation

STANDARD NORMS FOR HEALTHCARE PREMISES
The French norms for Healthcare premises are the most
stringent in Europe and, perhaps, the whole world. The
standard classifies 4 zones based upon the level of risk of
infection to which a patient is exposed.
Areas most sensitive to contamination, such as operating

The Challenge:
The challenge here was to maintain good acoustical comfort
along with high hygiene levels.
The Solution:
Ultima Vector was used in the corridors and Bioguard
Acoustic in all other areas. Ultima Vector with NRC of 0.7
& Dncw of 37 dB proved to be the right choice for corridors
as it provided the much required acoustic comfort along
with high light reflectance (LR ≥ 90%) and high humidity
resistance (95% RH). With its patented “DURABRITE”surface
which makes the surface highly scratch resistant and its
elegant design makes Ultima an ideal selection.

To create the "wow" effect in the entrance lobby with a high
atrium, yet achieve the perfect balance between aesthetics
and the right acoustics while simultaneously coordinating
the design of the ceiling and the walls.

“The 30ft high, double height and 280 foot long entrance
lobby ceiling necessitated acoustic treatment, since this is
an area where patients’ relatives spend a great deal of time.
Intelligibility during registration, over the noise created, was
also a concern as was the need for a maintenance friendly
aesthetic material, available both for ceiling and wall to
