The Analytical Power of Video in Retail
ScanSource Networking and Security Focus FALL 2017
It’s a wondrous thing to behold. Your
customer agrees with every one of your sales points.
He agrees with your reasoning and the value of your
solutions. Then, when it comes time to sign on the
dotted line, close the deal, and get started…he
hesitates. Too often, this is the case when resellers
recommend to their customers that they upgrade to
cloud-based networking.
And, unfortunately, we can’t control them all. But,
there are many things we do to combat potential
outages. For one, high availability and redundancy
is accomplished via the use of multiple datacenters.
And, in the event that connectivity to the cloud is
lost, the Aruba network will continue to perform,
and will be locally manageable via a built-in console
port on all Aruba Instant Access Points (IAPs).” He
added, “This is a feature that is unique to Aruba.”
Typically, the customer understands the concept
that an intelligent cloud solution greatly simplifies
network operations. They also grasp that it enables
administrators to see how a network is performing
and to manage it easily from anywhere. They see
the value in a system that can be easily scaled
and they agree that cloud networking allows IT
to easily distribute responsibility for different
locations in order to provide better overall network
management support.
In addition, Aruba has taken steps to ensure that
intelligent software features have been added to
their cloud solution. For instance, AppRF provides
the visibility needed to view app and web traffic by
the percentage of use throughout the day and over
time. Administrators can then fine-tune the network
for video, versus voice or data, based on timeframes
of heavy use.
Yet, still, there are concerns. Much of that stems
from the fact that although cloud discussions have
become part of our everyday life, cloud networking
is still a relatively new concept. And as customers
explore making the shift from traditional network
management to a cloud-based model, there are
always concerns, mostly centered on security and
cloud outages.
CLOSING THE DEAL:
CLOUD-BASED NETWORK
MANAGEMENT FROM ARUBA
We asked Trent Fierro, Director of Software
Marketing for Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise
company, how they help quell their customers’
concerns about the cloud.
As organizations reprioritize what their IT staff is
responsible for, rethink how budgets are being
spent, and strategize on how to most quickly adapt
to changing business demands, the idea of a flexible
cloud networking model is becoming more popular.
It offers everything they are looking for, namely:
reliability, scalability, and flexibility.
Cloud-managed networks are the answer to many
of your customers’ needs and challenges. It’s up to
you to provide them with the information — and, at
times, the guidance — they need to make the move.
“Security is a key concern, whether talking about
wired or wireless networking solutions,” he
said. “When it comes to cloud networking, other
considerations such as administrative access and
data encryption also come to mind. To alleviate
concerns, Aruba Central uses secure HTTPS
to establish connections. Tiered administrative
privileges and an option to trigger multi-factor
authentication per administrator role and additional
attributes are also available.”
What about outages? “There are a number of
factors that can contribute to potential outages.

TRUE OR FALSE: THE AVERAGE COLLEGE
STUDENT BRINGS THREE WI-FI DEVICES TO
CAMPUS.
False. There’s no such thing as an “average” college
student.
The other part is false as well. While most students
bring a laptop, tablet, and smartphone, that’s
just the beginning. You can add to that e-readers,
gaming consoles, wireless printers, Wi-Fi speakers,
AppleTVs, smart TVs, Blu-Ray players, and more.
Just for fun, you can also add in wearable devices
such as smart watches and fitness bands. So, while
the three device rule might have been accurate a
few years ago, that number has since gone out
the window. According to a re:fuel Agency’s 2015
College Explorer report, the average college student
brings seven internet-connected devices to campus,
and upgrades devices frequently.
BIG WI-FI
ON CAMPUS
Today’s college students
aren’t that
different from the college students of the past. They’re
inspired by hope and plagued with fears. Their
ambition is often clouded by ambiguity. And they’re
simply trying to find their way in the world. Where they
do differ, however, is in the slew of wireless devices
they bring to campus and in their absolute insistence
that the Wi-Fi network be spot on 24/7.
Students come to campus expecting that all of their
devices will connect easily. They want to watch
movies, visit social media, play videogames, and, oh
yeah, get homework done at lightning-fast download
speeds. And if they don’t get it, they complain, loudly,
and across several media. Twitter, Instagram, and
Snapchat are common ground for students to vent
their frustrations about network issues.
In a survey conducted for the State of RESNET Report
2016, 73% of Business and Housing Officers said that
they consider “at home” quality network connections
important to attract and retain on-campus students.
To ensure your network isn’t one that they complain
about, we invite you to take the following pop quiz on
college campus Wi-Fi Networks.
5 | ScanSource Networking and Security Focus FALL 2017
EXPLAIN WHY ADDING ADDITIONAL ACCESS
POINTS IN HIGH-DENSITY AREAS IS A BAD
CALL.
If you said something to the effect of “It costs more
money and creates more interference,” you get full
marks. While adding APs to a Wi-Fi deployment can
add capacity to a point, if you add too many, they
become counter-productive. Basically, the top source
of Wi-Fi interference is…other Wi-Fi signals! Adding
more APs often worsens the experience by introducing
additional interference and increasing the likelihood
of more than one AP communicating with the same
device over the same channel.
Erik Heinrich, Education Technology Evangelist at
Ruckus, points out that a single Ruckus R720 Access
Point can replace more than one legacy AP due to
its greater performance and capacity, which in turn
reduces related costs of additional APs. “Additionally,
the R720 offers support for multi-gigabit backhaul
over existing Cat5e Ethernet cabling, to support Wave
2 Wi-Fi speeds that can exceed the limits of 1GbE,”
he adds. “By upgrading to the R720, end users can
drastically improve performance, capacity, reliability,
and do so without upgrading cabling. By upgrading
to an R720, customers are adding future protection
and delivering a premium experience to all the latest
end-user Wi-Fi enabled devices.”
WHY IS WAVE 2 BETTER SUITED FOR COLLEGE
CAMPUSES THAN WAVE 1?
While we will also accept “because it is.” The more
correct answer is: Wave 2 offers improvement in user
experience through increased speed and capacity,
solving the top two challenges facing campus Wi-Fi.
Among the most important Wave 2 technologies is
the addition of a fourth spatial stream, which is akin to
adding another “lane on a freeway” to pass more data
to more clients.
You get a bonus point if you mention that with the
addition of Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO), which
enables each of these four streams to service a
different client simultaneously as opposed to being
served in sequence, the R720 improves the experience
for all users in a high density environment.
BONUS: WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING BEST
DEFINES THE TERM “COVERAGE” FOR
COLLEGE CAMPUSES?
1. Coverage = devices can see the Wi-Fi network.
2. Coverage = devices can see and connect to the
Wi-Fi network.
3. Coverage = devices can see, connect to and
consistently access the Wi-Fi network.
If you answered anything other than 3, maybe this
isn’t the field for you. Wi-Fi “coverage” simply isn’t
coverage unless devices can consistently access the
Wi-Fi network. And, while increasing an APs transmit
power makes it more likely to consistently send data
to devices, it does absolutely nothing to make it more
likely to receivwe data from devices. That’s because
increasing AP transmit power does not increase
device transmit power. And without an increase in
both, true coverage won’t be improved.
So, how’d you do? Unfortunately, when you’re out in
the field, you’re not being graded on a curve. It’s a
straight-forward Pass/Fail, so you better be prepared.
Our children’s futures are in your hands. No pressure.

BECOMING THE BANDWIDTH HERO
The great news
about today’s video
surveillance technology and solutions is that they
provide clearer and more detailed video and images
than ever before. The cameras are linked into the
company’s network, so they can be operated remotely,
and data can be shared instantly. The challenge, of
course, is that the high-resolution video take up a fair
amount of network bandwidth and storage. And the last
thing your customers – especially their IT managers –
want is video footage slowing down the entire network
and taking up too much storage space.
So, where’s the tradeoff? Your customers will say they
want both: HD video and lower bandwidth usage.
The IT managers have other needs and uses for
their networks bandwidth, but realize the value and
need for high definition network video. The common
denominator is that they’re all looking to you to be the
hero with all the answers.
13 | ScanSource Networking and Security Focus FALL 2017
The easy answer is for your end user customer to pay
for greater bandwidth and more storage. But, once that
gets shot down in committee, there are a few other
paths you can take to lower the bandwidth usage for
your HD cameras and system.
You can start by selecting a compression format that
best suits your needs. For example, if you want to
increase your storage, you may choose to go with the
h.264 compression format. Most HD video surveillance
users are partial to h.264 over M-JPEG because of the
way the compression works. It doesn’t capture each
frame as a separate entity like M-JPEG. This results
using less bandwidth and storage space without
sacrificing image detail.
Another approach is to lower your frames per second.
Just because you have the ability to record at a higher
fps rate these days, doesn’t mean you have to use it.
The industry standard is about 5-7 frames per second,
which, in most cases, is going to give you what you need
while dropping a significant amount of bandwidth usage.
Axis Communications, in response to this need for
higher resolution and lower bandwidth, has developed
Axis’ Zipstream Technology. This technology reduces
the overall bit rate by automatically applying a low level
of compression to the regions of interest in a scene and
applying a greater amount of compression to areas
of less interest. If nothing is happening in a scene,
users have the option for further bandwidth savings by
reducing the framerate until an event does occur. Many
of Axis’s top selling M, P, and Q series cameras feature
Zipstream Technology built right into the cameras.
Ryan Zatolokin, Senior Technologist at Axis
Communications, Inc. explains further. “Compatible
with just about every product category in Axis’ portfolio
as well as with our software and our partners’ video
management software (VMS), users can choose
bandwidth and storage saving products from our fixed
cameras, thermal cameras, fixed dome cameras, and
more! Cameras with built-in Zipstream Technology can
be added into any existing security solution. They are
easily integrated with existing VMS because the bit rate
reductions happen in the camera and not the software.”
He summarized the value by saying, “On top of a
savings of up to 50% or more on storage, users of
Axis’s Zipstream Technology can save tons on network
bandwidth, another one of those costs that make
installing a new or updated video surveillance system
seem out of financial reach.”
The advances, it seems, in video technology don’t only
focus on sharper definition and higher frame rates. The
manufacturers are taking into consideration the whole
solution and the full network. These advances allow
you to maximize efficiency as well as performance, and
act as the hero you always knew you were.
