INTRODUCTION
The TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager supplies all of the necessary features and functionality for today’s high-end audio/video components. Years of research and development have provided the most superior power management system to protect your valuable equipment.
FEATURES AND TECHNOLOGIES
IMPORTANT NOTE
All statements in this owner’s manual that refer to
“TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager” are applicable to the
TX500. Features or procedures that are specific for either unit are clearly noted.
AC LINE SURGE PROTECTION
For the most effective and long-lasting AC surge protection, the TRIBUTARIES ®
Power Manager is designed with Silicon Avalanche Diodes (SAD). The SADs are highly modified silicon diodes that can absorb up to 20 amperes of current, and recover within 2000 nanoseconds while still maintaining 100% effectiveness for years of safe trouble-free operation. Designed to function with “Half-Wave
Protection™”, the SADs will protect connected components from an over-voltage that occurs within one-half of an AC line cycle. This design assures you that in the event of an AC line spike, your components will be protected. Rest assured that there are no metal oxide varistors (MOV) used in this product. These devices are used in many competitive products and have been known to fail without warning leaving your expensive components completely unprotected.
7
8
RF INPUT SURGE PROTECTION
The TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager provides surge protected RF inputs and outputs for Cable TV, Satellite Receivers, and RF Antenna Systems.
The RF inputs have the bandwidth capability to pass satellite, cable or standard terrestrial TV signals without loss.
PHONE LINE SURGE PROTECTION
The TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager provides a surge protected telephone input and two telephone outputs. This permits the connection of one incoming phone line to two devices such as a Cable Box and a Satellite
Receiver.
10 PROGRAMMABLE OUTLETS
Each pair of the 10 outlets provided on the rear panel can be individually programmed for one of 4 different operational states: always-on; on, when the front panel POWER BUTTON is pressed or the triggering circuit is activated; on, with a 5 second delay; or on, with a 10 second delay.
Programming is easily accomplished by dip-switch settings located on the rear panel. This system provides you with the ability to choose whether you would like your components, such as a Cable Box or a Satellite receiver, to be “always-on”, or have a sequenced turn-on for those components that are normally off after use. Processor driven equipment, such as Preamplifiers,
Audio and Video Processors, DVD and CD Players, Video Displays, D-VHS
Recorders, etc, should be turned on first, followed by Receivers and Power
Amplifiers. Programming a sequenced turn-on of all your components prevents a possibly damaging instantaneous AC line power surge that would result if all components were turned on simultaneously.
EXTERNAL DC POWER-ON TRIGGER
External Triggering is available through 3.5mm mono jacks. Providing a DC trigger voltage at this point allows the unit to be turned on by an external device. Two TRIGGER INPUT jacks are provided, as well as one TRIGGER
OUTPUT jack, for daisy chaining a second TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager or TRIBUTARIES ® Power Strip. This feature permits the remote turn-on of the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager by one or two other components provided they have trigger outputs.
AC LINE FILTERING and CONDITIONING
TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager provides AC line filtering and conditioning never before offered in a consumer product. TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager engineering features three sets of 15 ampere Twin-T Noise Filters designed to protect both sides of the AC line. Featuring extremely sharp roll-off slopes in excess of 12dB per octave, TRIBUTARIES
®
Twin-T Noise Filters assure that any noise on the incoming AC line will be eliminated. By effectively isolating the
AC outlets on the rear panel from one another, the Twin-T Filters also act as a
“Noise Firewall” preventing unwanted, harmful noise from being generated by connected components or from passing to other connected components.
Separate filters are provided for ANALOG, DIGITAL, and AMPLIFIER Power.
FRONT PANEL INDICATORS OF OUTLET STATUS
Blue LED indicators are provided on the front panel of the TRIBUTARIES ®
Power Manager to identify the selection and timing of each outlet pair. Each numbered blue LED represents a numbered pair of rear-panel outlets. As each outlet pair turns on, the corresponding blue LED will illuminate.
Conversely, when the outlet pair turns off, the corresponding blue LED will turn off.
VOLTAGE METER
A voltage meter is provided on the front panel to indicate the voltage of the incoming AC line. The meter is illuminated with a soft blue light that may complement other lighted components in your system. The meter will only illuminate when the POWER BUTTON or the TRIGGER function is used to turn on the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager. The meter will always register a correct reading providing the unit is connected to an operating wall outlet.
UL ® 6500 LISTING
The TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager has been issued a certification by
Electronic Testing Laboratory (ETL) for compliance with UL ® Standard 6500
Second Edition w/revisions and CAN/CSA-C22.2. This ensures that when operated according to this manual, these products meet all the safety requirements of the National Electrical Code.
1800 WATT / 15 AMPERE RATING
The TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager is designed to deliver 1800 Watts (15
Amperes at 120 Volts AC) of clean, filtered and surge suppressed power to
.
your audio & video system components.
POLARITY FAULT INDICATOR
The illumination of the front panel blue POLARITY FAULT LED indicates that the white and black AC wires of the outlet into which the
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager is connected are reversed. DO NOT
OPERATE YOUR TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager WITH A LINE
PROBLEM. IF THE POLARITY FAULT LED DOES ILLUMINATE,

PLANNING YOUR SYSTEM
Think about which components need to work together, and place them in close proximity to one another. You may also want to consider putting frequently handled components in the most convenient locations.
Decisions about triggering options for your TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager will depend on many factors including the type of components in the system and whether they are self-controlled or part of a multi-room or whole-house system. By carefully planning the system’s architecture in advance, your
TRIBUTARIES you choose.
® Power Manager can be integrated into any configuration
IMPORTANT NOTE
All components in a system must be connected to a
Power Manager in order for the system to be protected from electrical disturbances and to achieve maximum noise and AC line conditioning benefits. This includes
AC power cables, coaxial connections, and telephone cables used with pay-per-view systems. Failure to do this will degrade system performance and leave it vulnerable to electrical damage.
PLACEMENT
It is recommended that the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager be placed in the same location as your other audio/video components so it can be easily reached when manually operating the other controls in the system. There should be a clear line of sight between the operator and the unit to allow easy user feedback of system status. The TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager should be placed on a flat, stable shelf or platform.
The TRIBUTARIES ® the TRIBUTARIES ®
Power Manager can also be rack-mounted. To prepare
Power Manager for rack-mounting, remove the rackmounting hardware from the plastic wrap. Unscrew the 8 large #2 Philipshead screws on the left and right side (4 screws on each side) of the chassis. Position one piece of the hardware against the chassis lining up the four screw holes in the hardware with the four holes in the side of the chassis. Using the four removed screws, fasten the hardware onto the chassis. Repeat the process for the other side of the chassis. The
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager is now ready to be rack-mounted.
PROGRAMMING YOUR AC CONNECTIONS
CONNECTING YOUR COMPONENTS TO THE TRIBUTARIES
®
Power
Manager
IMPORTANT NOTE
You may connect the AC plug of any of your components into any outlet on the rear panel of the
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager. All outlets provide the same level of filtering and surge protection.
11
Using the guidelines in the following paragraphs, connect the AC power cables from your components to the appropriate outlets on the
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager.
Plug the AC from your analog devices, such as, AM/FM Tuners, VCRs, etc, into the ANALOG outlets on the rear of the Power Manager. Plug the AC from your digital devices such as, DVD player, AV Processor, etc, into the
DIGITAL outlets. Plug the AC from your Receiver or Amps into the
AMPLIFIER’S outlets. To minimize speaker pops and thumps during system power-up, program the AMPLIFIER’S outlets to turn on 5 seconds after the
DIGITAL outlets. For details, see below.
Each outlet can be programmed for one of four different turn-on states:
1. Always-on, or
2. On, when the POWER BUTTON is pressed or when the TRIGGER
INPUT is activated, or
3. On, with a 5 second delay, or
4. On, with a 10 second delay.
Determine which components will be “Always-On”. Generally, these will be any components that have a clock-readout such as a VCR, Cable TV Tuner,
Set-Top Box, or Satellite Receiver. For programming convenience, connect the AC plugs from all the “Always-On” components to adjacent pairs of AC receptacles on the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager.
IMPORTANT NOTE
To successfully program the turn-on delay states, the
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager must be disconnected
(unplugged) from the AC line.
12
PROGRAMMING THE TURN-ON DELAY STATES
The TURN-ON DELAY programming module, accessible through an opening in the rear panel of the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager, contains
10 small levers, 2 for control of each rear panel AC outlet pair, numbered 1-
5. Programming for each pair of AC outlets is accomplished by positioning the switch levers to either “A” or “B” for the appropriately numbered outlet pair. Positioning a switch lever to the left corresponds to an “A” setting.
Positioning a switch lever to the right corresponds to a “B” setting.
Consequently, each pair of switches, reading from top down, can be positioned as AA, AB, BA or BB. Each pair’s positions corresponds to a specific state for the appropriate numbered outlet pair as follows;
AA - Always On
AB - On with Power Button or Trigger Input
BA - On with a 5 second delay
BB - On with a 10 second delay
To set the switch levers use a small pointed device such as the provided
TRIBUTARIES
® screwdriver.
Your TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager has been pre-programmed at the factory for this typical set-up of the TURN-ON DELAY module:

Power Manager connected to an AC wall outlet, observe the front panel LED indicators.
a) If the blue LED labeled “POLARITY FAULT” is illuminated, immediately disconnect the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager from the AC wall outlet.
The illuminated LED indicates a reversal of the “hot” and “neutral” wires in the wall outlet to which the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager was connected.
DO NOT OPERATE THE POWER MANAGER UNDER
THIS CONDITION. Contact a licensed electrician to repair the outlet.
b) If you have programmed one or more outlets to be “Always On”, check that the LED(s) corresponding to the programmed outlet number(s) are illuminated indicating that they are “live”.
c) Press the POWER BUTTON once.
IMPORTANT NOTE
If the POWER BUTTON is pressed twice within 10 seconds, the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager will immediately power down all outlets except those that were programmed “Always
On”.
d) This will initiate the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager processor sequence. The front panel LEDs denoting the rear AC outlets, should illuminate according to your programming of the TURN-ON DELAY module.
e) To turn your TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager off, simply push the
POWER BUTTON once. The rear panel outlets will turn off in the reverse sequence of the turn-on programming. The front panel LEDs will follow the turn off sequence.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Operating the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager using the
POWER BUTTON defeats the function of the TRIGGER
INPUT. To re-establish the use of the TRIGGER INPUT, the AC power cable must be disconnected from the AC wall receptacle for 15 seconds. After reconnecting the AC power cable, the
TRIGGER INPUT will become operative.
B. WITH THE TRIGGER INPUT SYSTEM CONNECTED
IMPORTANT NOTE
Once you turn on the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager using the
TRIGGER INPUT(S) the “POWER BUTTON” will become inoperative. To re-instate the operation of the POWER
BUTTON, the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager power cord must be disconnected from the AC wall receptacle for 15 seconds, the trigger cable(s) must be disconnected or the component(s) that provide the trigger signal(s) must be turned off.
15
16
For best results, use TRIBUTARIES ® DCT100 Trigger Cables. With a trigger cable connected from one or two components to the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power
Manager and both components powered off, you are ready to initiate the system power-up procedure. Simply turn on one of the components that is connected by a triggering cable to the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager.
When that component turns on, it will start the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power
Manager processor sequence. The front panel LEDs will illuminate according to the programming of the TURN-ON DELAY module.
If you have only one component connected to the TRIGGER IN of the
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager, turning that component off will initiate the turn off program. The rear panel outlets will turn off in the reverse sequence of the turn on programming. The front panel LEDs will follow the turn off sequence.
NOTE: If you have two components connected to the TRIGGER IN of the
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager, powering either one “on” will power the
TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager “on”. However, to power the
TRIBUTARIES powered “off”.
® Power Manager “off”, both connected components must be
C. WITH THE TRIGGER OUTPUT SYSTEM CONNECTED
The TRIGGER OUT jack can be used to connect the TRIBUTARIES
®
Power
Manager to another TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager, power strip or another component that has a trigger input and operates when it senses a 5 VDC and 200ma triggering signal. For best results, use TRIBUTARIES ® DCT100
Trigger Cables. When the originating TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager is powered-on using either the POWER BUTTON or the TRIGGER IN, a 5
VDC signal is generated. If the connected unit is configured properly, it will turn on when it senses the voltage generated by the originating
TRIBUTARIES
®
Power Manager. Conversely, when the originating
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager generating the triggering signal is powered off, the connected units will turn off.
IMPORTANT NOTE
It is not recommended to interconnect the AC function of 2-
TX500s either together or to one another. If more than 10 outlets are required, install a 2 nd Power Manager.
TROUBLESHOOTING
TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager does not power-up. There is no power to the connected equipment.
• Check that the unit is plugged in and that there is power at the wall outlet.
• Check the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager’s fuse located on the back panel. Replace if necessary.
• Disconnect the AC power cable from the back of the TRIBUTARIES ®
Power Manager or from the AC wall outlet. Wait 15 seconds and reconnect the AC power to the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager and turn it on.
Trigger cable(s) are attached, but the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager will not power up.
• First re-check the trigger cable(s) to ensure a positive connection. Then check that the trigger cable(s) is connected to one of the TRIGGER IN jacks on the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager.
• If all connections are properly made and the TRIBUTARIES ® Power
Manager fails to respond, it is most likely that the trigger signal voltage is below 5 volts DC or the current is less than 50 milliamperes (ma).
• Check the trigger source to be sure that the signal is 5-12VDC and the current is at least 50ma.
The POLARITY FAULT light on the front panel of the TRIBUTARIES ®
Power Manager lights up.
• This indicates that the wall outlet has a line problem such as polarity inversion. This is common, especially in older homes.
• DO NOT operate the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager with a line problem. Call your electrician to have the line repaired.
The fuse on the TRIBUTARIES
• Your TRIBUTARIES ®
® Power Manager continues to fail.
Power Manager is equipped with a 15 Amp 3AG fuse to provide overload protection. This fuse will allow up to 1800 watts of power (120VAC@15A) to pass through the TRIBUTARIES ® Power
Manager to your components. If the fuse continues to fail after being replaced, there may be a short in the system. If no short is apparent, or the problem is intermittent, the failure of the fuse indicates that the components are drawing more than 1800 watts. Check with your
TRIBUTARIES ® Dealer or installer to see what other Power Managers may be used in addition to the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager to provide sufficient power for your system.
There is an audible "thump," "click," or "pop," coming from the loudspeakers during the power-up function of the TRIBUTARIES ®
Power Manager.
• Many components will produce electronic “thumps,” “clicks,” or “pops,” audible through the loudspeakers, when the system is initially turned-on.
This occurs while the component’s power supply “settles in” which usually takes a few seconds. This is common, and while annoying, it usually will not harm the loudspeakers. If you have a separate
17
18
Processor and Power amp(s), and you would like to minimize or eliminate “thumps,” “clicks,” and “pops,” connect the Preamplifier and/or
A/V Processor to the DIGITAL outlet and the Power Amplifiers to the
AMPLIFIER outlets. Then, program the TURN-ON DELAY module (page
12) so that AMPLIFIER outlets turn on either 5 seconds or 10 seconds after the DIGITAL outlets.
AC outlets don’t turn on in the proper sequence.
• Disconnect the TRIBUTARIES
® Power Manager from the AC wall outlet.
• Reprogram the TURN-ON DELAY module (page 12).
• Reconnect the TRIBUTARIES ® initiate the turn-on.
Power Manager to the AC wall outlet and
Power button does not operate.
• First, check the VOLTMETER on the front of the TRIBUTARIES
® Power
Manager.
• If the VOLTMETER reads between 110-125 volts, the unit is receiving the proper power.
• If the VOLTMETER reads less than 110 volts, check that the power cord is properly connected to the back of the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager.
• If the VOLTMETER continues to read less 110 volts contact your local
TRIBUTARIES ® Dealer for assistance.
• If a trigger cable or cable(s) are connected to the TRIGGER INPUT(S), first disconnect the trigger cable(s). Then, disconnect the power cord from the AC wall receptacle. Wait 15 seconds and reconnect the power cord to the AC wall receptacle.
• If the POWER BUTTON still does not operate, contact your local
TRIBUTARIES ® Dealer for assistance.
Programming does not hold its memory.
• Disconnect the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager from the AC wall outlet.
• Reprogram the TURN-ON DELAY MODULE (page 12).
• Reconnect the TRIBUTARIES ® Power Manager to the AC wall socket and initiate the turn-on.
