Paper Recommendations

Loading Paper

❒ Do not use ink-jet printer paper because it may stick to the fusing unit and cause a paper misfeed.

❒ When printing on OHP transparencies that have a print side, load them with the print side over on the bypass tray. Not taking this precaution may cause them to stick to the fusing unit and cause misfeeds.

❒ Set the paper as described below

• Tray 1, Tray 2: Print side facing up

• Bypass Tray: Print side facing down

• Paper Feed Unit (Option): Print side facing down

❒ Print quality cannot be guaranteed if paper other than the ones recommended is used. For more information about recommended paper, contact your sales or service representative.

❒ Do not use paper that has already been printed onto by other printers.

Storing Paper

• Paper should always be stored properly. Improperly stored paper might result in poor print quality, paper misfeeds, or printer damage. Recommendations are as follows:

• Avoid storing paper in humid areas.

• Avoid exposing paper to direct sunlight.

• Store on a flat surface.

• Keep paper in the package in which the paper came.

• Press [Maintenance] menu, [Plain Paper] and then [Normal] or

[MidThick].

Click [Plain] or [Plain & Recycled] in the [Type:] list.

❒ Make sure paper is not stacked higher than the paper guides inside the bypass tray.

Not possible

• Print speed for OHP transparencies is slower than for plain paper.

• Paper settings can be set using the printer driver. Setting the paper sizes using the display panel is not necessary when it is set by the printer driver.

• Paper size settings set using the printer driver have priority over those set using the machine's display panel.

• When the printer driver is not used, make settings using the display panel.

• Select the [Maintenance] menu. Press [4C.Graphic Mode], [Text

Priority], and then print.

Special Paper

Printer setup Make the following two settings using the control panel:

• Press [Paper Input] menu, [Paper Type], and then [Special Paper] on the control panel.

• Press [Maintenance] menu, [Special Paper], and then [Special Pa-

per 1] - [Special Paper 4].

❒ From [Special Paper 1] to [Special Paper 4] in the menu, select the paper type according to the paper you are loading.

Printer driver setup Click [Special Paper] in the [Type:] list.

Additional cautions • Check the print side is facing up.

• Check there is no air in the envelopes before loading.

• For better print quality, we recommend the right, left, top, and bottom print margins to be at least 15 mm (0.6”) each.

• Load only one size and type of envelope at a time.

• When loading envelopes, be sure to unfold the flaps and position them opposite to the paper feed direction.

• Before loading envelopes, flatten their leading edges (the edge going into the printer) by running a pencil or ruler across them.

• Some kinds of envelope might cause misfeeds, wrinkles or print poorly.

• Print quality on envelopes may be uneven if parts of an envelope have differing thicknesses. Print one or two envelopes to check print quality.

Paper not supported by this printer

Avoid using the following paper as they are not supported by this printer.

• Paper meant for an ink-jet printer

• Bent, folded, or creased paper

• Curled or twisted paper

• Torn paper

• Wrinkled paper

• Damp paper

• Paper that is dry enough to emit static electricity

• Paper that has already been printed onto, except a preprinted letterhead.

Malfunctions are especially likely when using paper printed on by other than a laser printer (e.g. monochrome and color copiers, ink-jet printers, etc.)

• Special paper, such as thermal paper, aluminum foil, carbon paper and conductive paper

• Paper whose weight is heavier or lighter than the limitation

• Paper with windows, holes, perforations, cutouts, or embossing

• Adhesive label paper on which glue or base paper is exposed

• Paper with clips or staples

❒ If you load paper larger than A3L in the bypass tray, hold it steady so it feeds properly. Paper feed accuracy and print quality may vary according to paper thickness and width. Do a test print to check the paper you want to use gives satisfactory results.

❒ The maximum length of the print area is 457 mm (18”) in the paper feed direction (at 1200

×1200 dpi). If paper exceeding 457 mm (18”) in the paper feed direction is used, the machine may not print properly.

Loading Paper in Tray 2 and Paper Feed Unit Type 7300

Paper of different sizes can be loaded in tray 2 and the 500- and 1000-sheet paper feed units (optional) by adjusting the positions of the side and end guides.

This section describes loading paper in tray 2.

❒ If the side and end guides are in the right positions for the paper to be loaded, they do not have to be adjusted.

Loading Paper in the Bypass Tray

Besides plain paper, you can use the bypass tray to load thick paper, envelopes,

OHP transparencies, paper longer than A3L, and paper that cannot be loaded in the paper trays or paper feed unit.

• Set the size and direction of the loaded paper on the control panel or with the printer driver. Make sure the settings do not conflict. Otherwise, the paper may jam or the print quality may be affected.

❒ The bypass tray can accommodate sheets 90-305 mm(3.5”-12.01”) wide and

148-457 mm(5.8”-18”) long. However, the paper size must be set using the control panel. When using the RPCS

TM

printer driver, sheets of up to 1260 mm(49.61”) in length can be set.

❒ If you load custom size paper or special paper, select the paper size using the control panel. The RPCS

TM

printer driver can select the paper size using the printer driver properties. The paper size selected using the printer driver overrides that selected using the control panel. See

p.31 “Specifying custom size paper for the Bypass Tray” .

❒ If you load thick paper, OHP transparencies, or envelopes, make the settings for thick paper or OHP transparencies using the control panel or printer driver.

❒ The number of pages that can be loaded in the bypass tray differs depending on paper type. Check that the top of the stack is not higher than the limit mark inside the tray.

❒ When loading paper in the bypass tray, use L orientation if possible.

❒ When loading the bypass tray with paper that will be delivered into the top-left tray, load the paper so the side you want to print on faces up.

The screwdriver supplied is used for attaching options and is located inside the front cover.

Detaching and Reattaching the Options

This section describes how to detach or reattach optional finishers and how to open and close the duplex reversal unit. Follow the procedure below when replacing various units or removing jammed paper.

Detaching the SR960 (2 Tray Finisher)

There are times when you may need to detach the 2 tray finisher from the printer to remove misfed paper. This section describes how to detach the 2 tray finisher.

A

Hold the handle at the top of the 2 tray finisher firmly using one hand, pull the 2 tray finisher straight out, and let go when it stops.

The 2 tray finisher is detached from the printer.

B

Use both hands to push it straight back in, and let go when it clicks into place.

The 2 tray finisher is reattached to the printer.

❒ Be sure to attach the 2 tray finisher to the printer after closing the duplex reversal unit. See

p.38 “Opening and Closing the Duplex Reversal Unit”

A

Hold the release lever, and then pull out the booklet finisher.

There are times when you may need to detach the duplex reversal unit to remove misfed paper. This section describes how to detach the duplex reversal unit.

Replacing the Toner Cartridge

Do not incinerate spilled toner or used toner. Toner dust is flammable

and might ignite when exposed to an open flame.

Disposal should take place at an authorized dealer or an appropriate

collection site.

If you dispose of the used toner cartridges yourself, dispose of them

according to local regulations.

Do not store toner, used toner, or toner containers in a place with an

open flame. The toner might ignite and cause burns or a fire.

Keep toner (used or unused) and the toner cartridge out of reach of chil-

dren.

If toner or used toner is inhaled, gargle with plenty of water and move into

a fresh air environment. Consult a doctor if necessary.

If your skin comes into contact with toner or used toner, wash the affected

area thoroughly with soap and water.

If toner or used toner gets into your eyes, flush immediately with large

amounts of water. Consult a doctor if necessary.

If toner or used toner is swallowed, dilute by drinking a large amount of wa-

ter. Consult a doctor if necessary.

Avoid getting toner on your clothes or skin when removing a paper jam or

replacing toner. If your skin comes into contact with toner, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water.

If toner gets on your clothing, wash with cold water. Hot water will set the

toner into the fabric and may make removing the stain impossible.

❒ The actual number of printed pages differs depending on paper type, size, contents, and settings. For details, see

p.161 “Toner Cartridge” .

The color of the lit LED indicates the toner status for each color. A red light indicates the toner cartridge must be replaced.

Replace the toner cartridge if the following message appears on the display:

❒ A combination of one to four colors, yellow, magenta, cyan, black, appears in

❒ If black toner runs out, printing is not possible until the black toner cartridge is replaced.

While pushing the lock button on the upper right cover of the printer ( ), open the upper right cover ( ).

From the end, the toner cartridges are installed in the order of magenta (M), cyan (C), yellow (Y), and black (K).

Remove the toner cartridge for the color you want to replace. Unhook the green hook on the toner cartridge with one hand.

Holding the toner cartridge with the other hand, slowly pull it up and out.

❒ Do not shake the removed toner cartridge. Remaining toner might scatter.

Take the new toner cartridge out of the box.

❒ The black toner cartridge contains more than the other toner cartridges.

Shake the toner cartridge back and forth five or six times.

Replacing the Fusing Unit

The fusing unit becomes very hot. When installing a new fusing unit, turn off

the printer and wait about an hour. After that, install the new fusing unit. Not waiting for the unit to cool could result in a burn.

Touch only the handles, no other parts. The fusing unit gets very hot and

will burn your hands if you touch it.

If “Replace Fusing Unit (Type C)” appears on the display, replace the fusing unit.

Replacing the Dustproof Filter

Cleaning

Cautions to Take When Cleaning

Do not remove any covers or screws other than those specified in this

manual. Some parts of the machine are at a high voltage and could give you an electric shock. Also, if the machine has laser systems, direct (or indirect) reflected eye contact with the laser beam may cause serious eye damage. When the machine needs to be checked, adjusted, or repaired, contact your service representative.

Do not take apart or attempt any modifications to this machine. There

is a risk of fire, electric shock, explosion or loss of sight. If the machine has laser systems, there is a risk of serious eye damage.

When removing misfed paper, do not touch the fusing section because it

could be very hot.

Clean the printer periodically to maintain print clarity.

Dry wipe the exterior using a soft cloth. If dry wiping is not enough, wipe using a soft, wet cloth that is well wrung out. If you still cannot remove the stain or grime, use a neutral detergent, then wipe over with a well wrung wet cloth, dry wipe, and let it dry.

❒ To avoid deformation, discoloration, or cracking, do not use volatile chemicals, such as benzine and thinner, or spray insecticide on the printer.

❒ If there is dust or grime inside the printer, wipe it away using a clean, dry cloth.

Cleaning the Registration Roller

The inside of the printer becomes very hot. To avoid burns, do not touch

parts labelled “hot surface”, otherwise it could cause a burn.

Clean the roller when replacing the black development unit.

Checking the Earth Leakage Breaker

This printer has an earth leakage breaker to prevent electric shock. Normally, the earth leakage breaker will be at the “-” position.

Check the earth leakage breaker at least once a year using the following procedure.

If the earth leakage breaker has tripped, contact your sales or service rep-

resentative. Do not reset earth leakage breaker yourself as you may get an electric shock, the printer may catch fire, or the building earth leakage breaker may trip.

❒ If the earth leakage breaker fails to trip when tested, contact your sales or service representative.

Make sure the printer’s ground is properly connected.

B

Turn off the power.

If the 2 tray finisher or the booklet finisher is attached to the printer, detach it before checking the earth leakage breaker.

Press the earth leakage breaker's test button with a point of an object such as a ballpoint.

Correcting the Color Gradation

Color gradation during color printing various slightly depending on a number of factors. If you print the same file repeatedly or toner was recently replaced, changes may occur in color tones. When this happens, to obtain suitable print results, color gradation can be corrected, although it is not usually necessary to make any particular settings.

❒ If suitable results cannot be obtained after a single operation, repeat the correction several times, as needed.

❒ Corrections to color gradation will be applied to all user jobs.

❒ Use the same paper when printing a run of gradation corrections. If a different type of paper is used, corrections may not be apparent.

❒ This requires the use of the supplied Color Calibration Sample Sheet.

❒ Corrections to color gradation are performed in the following order.

Set the Gradation Correction Value

During printing, you can correct the gradation in two areas: the bright part (highlighted) and the medium part (middle). The correction value for the highlighted and the middle parts are set using “Calibr.1” and “Calibr.2” respectively.

Viewing the Color Calibration Sample Sheet and Gradation

Correction Sheet

The color gradation correction value setting sheet contains two color sample columns: the “Sample 1” column for setting the highlight part and the “Sample 2” column for setting the middle part.

Similarly, there are two gradation correction sheets: “Gradation correction sheet

1” for setting the highlight part and “Gradation correction sheet 2” for setting the middle part. Gradation correction sheet 1 is used for calibration 1, while Gradation correction sheet 2 is used for calibration 2.

Color sample and correction values

The following explains how to use the color sample of the Color Calibration

Sample Sheet and the correction values of the gradation correction sheet.

This explanation uses K (black) as an example. The setting method for M (magenta) is similar. For C/Y (cyan/yellow), the correction value is determined based on combinations of these two colors, although settings are made for each color.

❒ Compare the K correction value (0-6) of gradation correction sheet 1 with the K color sample of the Color Calibration Sample Sheet. Determine the color that matches the color sample the closest, and then set the correction value of that color using the control panel. The currently set correction value is printed in red.

Photographs and other data-rich pages take a long time for the printer to process, so simply wait when printing such data.

❒ To maintain optimum quality, color adjustment is regularly executed during or after printing. Even if printing is not specified, color adjustment is sometimes executed automatically while the power is on.

It takes too much time to resume printing.

The data is so large or complex that it takes time to process.

If the Data In indicator is blinking, data processing is in progress. Just wait until it resumes.

The printer might be in Energy Saver mode. In this mode, the printer has to warm up before printing can start, and this takes time. To change how long it takes before the printer goes into Energy Saver mode or to disable Energy Saver mode, configure Energy Saver 1 or Energy Saver 2 in the

System menu.

Color gradation during color printing changes slightly, depending on a number of factors. If you print the same file repeatedly or toner was recently replaced, changes may occur in color tones. When this happens, to obtain suitable print results, color gradation can be corrected.

Due to sudden temperature change, condensation might appear inside the printer, reducing print quality. If you move the printer from a cold room to a warmer room, do not use until it acclimatizes to the temperature.

To adjust image density, press {Menu}, and select Image

Density from the Maintenance menu.

If paper is curled, correct it.

Curled or folded paper might result in hazy gray print. Curling often occurs with postcards, so be sure to correct it before printing.

When you use certain functions, such as enlargement and reduction, image layout might be different from that displayed on the computer screen.

The printer does not print at

1200 dpi, even if 1200 dpi resolution is selected.

There are color differences in color documents.

You might have selected to replace True Type fonts with printer fonts in the printing process.

To print an image like that image on the computer screen, make settings to print out True Type fonts as an image.

Printing at 1200 dpi is memory intensive. Therefore, depending on memory capacity, you may not be able to print at 1200 dpi. Either add memory to the printer, or reduce the size of data.

After adding a memory unit and set the value of the [RAM

When printing a PDF with a password set, set the password of the PDF file using the [PDF: Change PW] menu in [PDF Menu] or Web Image Monitor.

PDF files not allowed to be printed by the PDF file security setting cannot be printed.

As a result of printing using PDF

Direct Print, characters are missing or misshapen.

Before printing, embed the font in the PDF file to be printed.

The paper size appears on the control panel and printing is not performed with PDF Direct Print.

When using PDF Direct Print, printing will be performed only when paper of the size set within the PDF file is loaded.

When a message indicating a paper size appears, either load paper of the indicated size in the paper tray or perform Form

Feed.

Also, if [Sub Paper Size] on the System Menu is set to [Auto], printing is performed assuming letter size and A4 size to be the same size. For example, when a PDF file set to A4 size paper is printed using PDF Direct Print and letter size paper is loaded in the paper tray, the file will be printed. This also applies to the reverse case.

❒ If the problem cannot be solved, contact your sales or service representative.

Problems

Strange noise is heard.

No e-mail is received when an

Alert occurs and after resolving an Alert.

Solutions

If a supply was recently replaced or an option attached in the area the strange noise is coming from, check the supply or option is properly attached. If the strange noise persists, contact your sales of service representative.

Confirm [Notify by Email] is set to [On] using the System Menu on the control panel. See “System Menu”, Software Guide.

Access the printer through Web Image Monitor, logging on as an Administrator, and then confirm the following settings in

[Notification]:

• Device E-mail Address

• Groups to Notify

• Select Groups/Items to Notify

Access the printer through Web Image Monitor, logging on as an Administrator, and then confirm the settings of the SMTP server in [E-mail].

When the power is turned off before the e-mail is transmitted, the e-mail will not be received.

Check the e-mail address set for the destination. Confirm the printer's operation history using the Web Image Monitor's

System Log menu in [Network]. If the e-mail was sent but not received, it is possible the destination was incorrect. Also check the information concerning error e-mail from the mail server.

The setting for [Notify by Email] on the System Menu was changed from [Off] to [On], but email is not arriving.

After changing the setting, turn the printer's power off and then back on again.

Error notification e-mail was received, but no error-solved email is received.

Solutions

Check that e-mail is set to be sent using Web Image Monitor's [Notification] when an error is fixed. You must click the

[Edit] button of [Detailed Settings of Each Item] in [Notification], and set [Notify when error:] to [Occurs & Fixed] on the displayed page.

Alert Resolving is set for sending e-mail, but no error-solved email is sent.

If the power of the printer is turned off after an Alert occurs and the Alert is resolved during the time the power is off, no error-solved e-mail is sent.

Alert Occurrence and Alert Resolving are set for sending email, but while no error notification e-mail is received, errorsolved e-mail is received.

Alert-notification e-mail is not sent if the problem is resolved before sending. However, an error solved e-mail is sent.

The error-notification timing was changed, but no error notification e-mail was received for that timing.

If an error-notification e-mail is sent before the error-notification timing is changed, another error-notification e-mail for that error will not be sent for the new timing.

When no date information is included in sent e-mail, the mail server has a malfunction.

Make the setting for obtaining time information from the

SNTP server.

Printing using Bluetooth is slow. When using the Bluetooth interface unit, do the following:

• Transmit fewer print jobs.

• Make sure no IEEE 802.11b (wireless LAN) or other Bluetooth devices are in use.

❒ Interference may occur with the IEEE 802.11b interface unit. Such interference may affect the transmission speed and other functions.

• Transmissions between the computer and the printer can be blocked by obstructions. Move the printer or computer if necessary.

Although the duplex unit is installed, the paper is printed on one side only.

❒ When you use a Bluetooth connection, print jobs are transmitted relatively slowly.

Restart the printer by turning it off and back on. If the problem persists, contact your sales or service representative.

If the machine is still not operating satisfactorily, contact your sales or service representative. Consult with the store where the printer was purchased for information about the location of sales or service representatives.

An error message appears if a paper misfeed occurs. The error message gives the location of the misfeed.

❒ Misfed paper may be covered in toner. Be careful not to get toner on your hands or clothes.

❒ Toner on prints made after removing misfed paper may be loose (inadequately fused). Make a few test prints until smudges no longer appear.

❒ Do not forcefully remove misfed paper, it will tear. Torn pieces remaining inside the printer will cause further misfeeds and possibly damage the printer.

Misfeed Recovery

This printer has a misfeed recovery function that sends misfed paper to the standard tray or right cover. Usually, you can remove the misfed paper from one or other of these trays.

Moving and Transporting the Printer

When moving the machine, each person should hold the handle on the

sides, and lift slowly. Lifting carelessly or dropping it may cause injury.

When moving the printer, remember to unplug the power cord from the wall

outlet to avoid fire or electric shock.

When pulling out the plug from the socket, grip the plug to avoid damaging

the cord and causing fire or electric shock.

❒ Basic model printer weighs approximately 83.3 kg (183.7 lb.), duplex unit standard model printer weighs approximately 92.5 kg (203 lb.).

Protect the printer by using the original packaging when transporting.

❒ Be sure to disconnect all cables from the printer before moving it.

❒ This printer is a piece of precision machinery. Take care to avoid damage during shipment.

Moving the Printer

When lifting the machine, use the inset grips on both sides. Otherwise the

printer could break or cause injury if dropped.

Before moving the machine, unplug the power cord from the outlet. If the

cord is unplugged forcefully, it could become damaged. Damaged plugs or cords can cause an electrical or fire hazard.

Moving the printer in the short distance
