Frequently Asked Questions
What is ADP?
ADMIRALTY DIGITAL PUBLICATIONS (ADP) is a digital version of the paper
Nautical Publications. ADP consists of three product groups: Admiralty Digital
List of Lights, Admiralty Total Tide and Admiralty Digital Radio Signals. They
are fully vectorised applications which can be licensed as a data service on
subscription rather than per edition and can be automatically updated. . ADP
is widely accepted as meeting SOLAS carriage requirements for nautical
reference guides, and contains the same information as their paper
equivalents.
Can I install ADP on a
networked PC?
ADP is designed to be installed on standalone computers. Each ADP licence
is suitable for a Main and Back Up computer with a common Start Up Key
and separate Activation Keys.
How do I add extra
products and/or
services to my licence?
To add extra geographic areas or another ADP product, users need to contact
their Admiralty Chart Agent who will add the new products and/or services
and then provide them with new Activation Keys to be installed in their PC(s).
How do I get an
Activation Key by email?
The Activation Key request must come from the PC on which ADP is
installed. The request captures codes from the host PC which links the
subsequent Activation Key to the one PC.
If you have email facilities from the PC on which ADP is installed
When running the ADP Program without an Activation Key the “Licence Key

I received a Start-Up Key
for ADP but it expired
before I installed the
software - how can I get
an Activation Key?
The Start-Up Key can always be used to install ADP, even if the Key has
expired. However, the Start-up Key will not allow you to display any
information beyond its one-month expiry date and it will not allow you to apply
any ADLL or ADRS updates. You can get an Activation Key at any time after
installing your Start-Up Key on ADP by email. Since ADP V14.1, you can
activate your software directly over the internet (please see ADP Start Up
Guide and relevant Activation FAQs for instructions).
When I open ADLL or
ADRS, why can’t I see a
list view or a filter view?
This problem occurs when these views have been removed. To insert new
views, select Windows from the Top bar, then select Windows > Filter
Windows from the ADLL, ADRS 1, 3, 4, 5, ADRS2 or ADRS6 toolbar.

Which flag States
have approved ADP as
meeting the carriage
requirement?
Why can’t I apply ADP
updates received from
my ADP data provider
such as ChartCo?
Please see the 'Flag States Approval' Tab under each ADP product (i.e.
ADLL, ADRS 1, 3, 4, 5, ADRS2, ADRS6, ATT) contained on the UKHO
website:
http://www.ukho.gov.uk/ProductsandServices/DigitalPublications/Pages/ADLL
.aspx
If updates have been applied using your data provider and the error message
“This update file cannot be used because it does not follow on from
your current data” is displayed, you will need to update your system with one
of the UKHO ADP updating options using the Data Updating Wizard.
Unlike the ADP updates, ChartCo updates are not cumulative and have to be
applied week by week. To correct the problem, update your ADP using one of
the UKHO ADP updating methods then continue to use the ChartCo service
on a weekly basis
Why do I only have
one Start-Up Key when I
have purchased five
products?
There is only 1 Start-Up Key supplied for ADP which contains ADLL, ADRS 1,
3, 4, 5, ADRS2, ADRS6 and ATT. You only need to install 1 Start-Up Key in
your computer to be able to view all five products.
Does ADP meet SOLAS
requirements?
ADP is produced using official data and is designed to meet SOLAS
requirements. See the UKHO website to ensure it is accepted by the
appropriate
flag
State:
http://www.ukho.gov.uk/ProductsandServices/DigitalPublications/Pages/ADLL
.aspx
What do I need in the way
of a backup for ADP?
ADP allows 2 installations on independent PCs, some flag States may permit
or require other options; therefore ship owners should consult their national
maritime administration for specific advice.
Can I use ADP
paperless?
Provided you are operating dual systems with independent power supplies
and have carried out a risk assessment according to the guidelines laid out
by your Flag State - Yes.
Does ADP include T&P
NMs?
Yes. T&P NMs are applied to ADLL and ADRS2 where necessary and
annotated accordingly on the display. ADRS 1, 3, 4, 5 and ADRS6 do not
have T&P NMs.
What is the average size
of the weekly update
files to download?
The maximum you should expect to receive is 1.25Mb.
How many devices may I
use?
Each vessel will be able to install two devices under each licence. For
additional copies more licences should be purchased.

I have installed ADP.
Why do I only have
access to the sample
data?
You need to enter the Start-Up Key supplied by your Admiralty Chart Agent. If
you have purchased an ADP Licence and the ADP V14/V14.1/V15 CD was
supplied to you without a Start-Up Key, you should contact your Admiralty
Chart Agent to be supplied a Start-Up key and then add it as follows:
Following the installation of ADP on your computer, the Window “Licence
Key Wizard – New System” will appear.
1) Click Next
2) A new window ’Licence Key Wizard – Add Key’ then appears
3)
A box will then appear where you can then enter the string of letters and
numbers of your Start Up Key appearing on the CD or provided by your
Chart Agent
Tip: Use Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) to enter the key details. If you
enter the details incorrectly the Licence Key Wizard - Unable to Add Keys
screen will appear and you will need to re-enter the details.
Select Next.
The Licence Key Wizard – Start-up Key Only screen appears, showing
your current Start-Up Key expiry date.
If you then want to request an Activation Key, select Request or Add an
Activation Key and follow the instructions on the screen
To exit the wizard, select Close.
I have replaced or
upgraded my computer.
How do I reinstall ADP?
Load the latest version of ADP on your PC. Select Start > Programs >
Admiralty Digital Publications > Licence Key Wizard from the menu bar.
Use the Licence Key Wizard and enter your original Start-Up Key in the
Window „Licence Key Wizard – New System‟ and generate a new
Activation Key request from this machine. Make sure that you have selected
the appropriate type of computer, Main or Backup.
Under normal conditions, your request will be scrutinised and authorised and
a replacement Activation Key automatically generated and emailed back to
you within a few minutes.
Occasionally, Activation Key requests may be refused by our server. If this
happens you will need to contact either your Admiralty Chart Agent or the
UKHO Customer Services team at customerservices@ukho.gov.uk
explaining the situation and enclosing your Start-Up Key, Activation Key and
computer name.
When the new Activation Key has been installed, update your area data files
(if ADLL or ADRS have been licensed) using the Update Data Wizard and the
latest ADP weekly update CD.

I have a message saying
that the “Key cannot be
decoded correctly” when
my ADP program was
working previously and I
have already entered an
Activation Key?
Generating an Activation Key request captures hardware details about the
host PC. This locks the Activation Key to that PC. If you have made any
changes to your hardware or changed your PC since generating your
Activation Key request, this will invalidate your Activation Key. You will now
need to request a new Activation Key.
If the incorrect Start Up or Activation Keys were installed in the wrong PC, you
will need to:
1)
First delete the incorrect key from your computer as follows: From Start
menu
Select Programs > Admiralty Digital Publications > Licence Key
Wizard
The 'Licence Key Wizard - Activated' window will appear Select Obtain
or manually add another Activation Key The 'Licence Key Wizard Valid Keys' window will appear Select the invalid key using the dropdown
menu
Highlight the key and press the Delete button on your keyboard
You will then get a warning 'Are you sure you want to delete this key?'
Select Yes
Now select Close
Go back into the 'Licence Key Wizard - Start-Up Key Only' window
Select 'Request an Activation Key' and then Next
2)
Then follow the instructions to Request your Activation Key directly by
email
Under normal conditions, your request will be scrutinised and authorised and
a replacement Activation Key automatically generated and emailed back to
you within a few minutes.
Occasionally, our server may refuse an Activation Key request. If this
happens you will first need to contact either your Admiralty Chart Agent or
the UKHO Customer Services team at customerservices@ukho.gov.uk
explaining the situation and enclosing your Start-Up Key, Activation Key and
computer name.
If you are running a Main and a Backup system, ensure that the correct Key is
used on the correct PC.
