Profile
Arts Centre Washington is located in the new town of Washington which sits in a position of equal
distance between Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. The area has its roots in mining, the last pit
closing in the area in the 1980’s. Going even further back, the ancestors of George Washington
who lived locally gave the area its name and one of the most famous north east legends, The
Lambton Worm, supposedly took place a stones throw from the arts centre.
th
The arts centre itself is a converted 19 century farm, a ruin rescued at the time of the development
of the new town in 1972 when it was decided that a centre for arts and culture should be included in
the vision for the area. Originally called Biddick Farm Arts Centre, it has gone through several
incarnations to become what is now a vibrant multi-arts centre that hosts a theatre, gallery, rehearsal
rooms, artist’s studios, recording studio, café and award winning bar. It is now owned and managed
by Sunderland City Council.
Arts Centre Washington has a very distinct character. The Gallery, which forms the central creative
hub of the building, is a light and airy raftered space whilst the 110 seat theatre is converted from the
main barn and retains its original stone walls and unique atmosphere. Another barn has been
converted into a multifunctional space that is used for a variety of purposes whilst the cowsheds now
serve as a block of artist’s studios. The café/bar in the courtyard allows customers to spill out into
the sunshine on hot, summer days.
Arts Centre Washington exists to provide a mixed programme of artistic events and activities for all
members of its community to experience and participate in the arts. Events
include theatre, music, dance and comedy with Saturday nights in the Low Barn playing host to the
award winning Davy Lamp Folk Club. On Wednesday evenings the arts centre is taken over by
young people on the Remix programme which offers a whole range of arts activities for13-19 year
olds. Budding musicians are also able to take advantage of the Community Music Space which
offers free practise rooms and technical support whilst older members of the community are frequent
visitors to the weekly Tea Dance and fortnightly Nifties group. There is also a packed programme
of Classes and Courses - activities for all ages to take part in from salsa to sequence dancing;
model making to messy play.
Arts Centre Washington’s main funder is Sunderland City Council with funding for special
programmes and projects provided by Arts Council England and the Northern Rock Foundation.

THEATRE
The Theatre or High Barn is a converted barn with stone walls and high beamed
ceiling, from which the LX grid, various luminaires and black cloths are suspended.
The playing area is on ground level and is boxed on all sides with black cloths to
mask the stone walls and access doors, and there are moveable half-tabs that can
be removed upon request. A fixed remote controlled projection screen is also
suspended from the grid midstage, with an HD projector suspended in the
auditorium. There is a control room at the rear of the auditorium containing LX
power distribution units, LX control, AV equipment and control for projector and
screen. We have a house PA and various audio facilities. The backstage area is
large and easily accessible via two barn doors at ground level and we have black
flats available for masking. The auditorium has retractable seating for 120 people
and various access locations and as such can be used in a number of different
layouts with portable staging units and chairs/tables available on request. We have
a large dressing room which can be divided into two. We have a showering facility
and washing/drying/iron for laundry. Other equipment such as plinths/AV
equipment/piano and gels are available upon request.
NOTE TO TECHNICIANS / STAGE MANAGERS;



The Theatre does not have a suspended grid in the traditional sense. Due to
the nature of the space there are outlets and scaff bars attached to the
wooden A frame beams. This therefore limits placement of luminaires. Any
references to the ‘grid’ in this document should be read as scaff attached to
beams.
Any reference to the stage simply means the performance space in a
traditional configuration of ‘end on ‘
There are also no wings but instead two entrances from the corridor stage
left. Please see diagrams.
Get In/Out;
…Is very easy, usually through large barn doors which lead directly to the scene
dock and on to the performance area. If you have particularly large pieces of set,
please refer to the metrics on the plan or contact us to confirm access.
There is ample onsite parking that can accommodate most vehicles.

For more technical information on specific items please follow the links
provided.

LOW BARN
The Low Barn is also a converted barn space with a beamed roofspace to which
the LX outlets/scaff and various luminaires are fixed. It is a multi functional space
without fixed seating or staging. There are several access points to the space and it
has licensed bar and toilet facilities within it. For the purposes of live recording there
is a fixed multi-channel connection to the recording studio making the space ideal
for capturing studio quality live performances. The room has curtains along two
walls to reduce reverberation, which also serve to blackout two windows at the rear.
LX is controlled via a small adjacent storage room. We have various AV and PA
equipment available for use in the space and an upright piano upon request.
