This Introduction into Service manual presents the new
S-Class in model series 222.
The purpose of this brochure is to acquaint you with the technical highlights of this new vehicle in advance of its market
launch. This brochure is intended to provide information for
people employed in service, maintenance and repair as well
as for aftersales staff. It is assumed here that the reader is already familiar with the Mercedes-Benz model series currently
on the market.
WIS is updated continuously. Therefore, the information
available there reflects the latest technical status of our
vehicles.
The Introduction into Service Manual provides initial information on the on the new S-Class, model series 222. The
Introduction into Service Manual is not stored in this form in
WIS. The contents of this brochure are not updated. No provision is made for supplements.
In terms of the contents, the emphasis in this Introduction
into Service Manual is on presenting new and modified components and systems.
We will publicize modifications and new features in the relevant WIS documents. The information presented in this
Introduction into Service Manual may therefore differ from
the more up-to-date information found in WIS.
This Introduction into Service manual is not intended as an
aid for repairs or for the diagnosis of technical problems. For
such needs, more extensive information is available in the
Workshop Information System (WIS) and Xentry Diagnostics.

Brief description
Vehicle concept
July 2013 will see the launch of the new S-Class in model series 222, the successor to model series 221.
This charismatic touring sedan differs from its predecessor
in its pioneering design and numerous technical innovations
throughout the vehicle that, either by themselves or in their
combination and expression, set new standards in the new
S-Classes.
At the market launch the following three models will initially
be available:
• S 350 BlueTEC with 6-cylinder diesel engine
• S 400 HYBRID with 6-cylinder gasoline engine
• S 500 with 8-cylinder gasoline engine
Dimensional concept
The larger rear compartment provides even greater levels of
comfort, especially on long journeys.
Compared to the predecessor model 221, the exterior dimensions of the new S-Class have grown by 20 mm in length, 28
mm in width and 10 mm in height.
For this interior this results in significant enlargements in the
dimensions of headroom, shoulder space and elbow room.
The new S-Class provides rear-seat passengers with greater
legroom, depending on the installed rear seat variants, producing additional comfort benefits.

Compared with its predecessor, the new S-Class is characterized by a more upright front end, which enables it
to meet the legal requirements for pedestrian protection.
Nevertheless, the standard-equipment full LED headlamps,
the redesign of the lower air intakes and the traditionally elegant chrome-plated radiator grille have managed to create a
perfect balance between dynamics and elegance.
Rear end
The rear end of the new S-Class has a more rounded shape.
This effect is underscored by the curved rear lights that stand
apart from the trunk lid. The sweeping rear view continues
the elegant lines of the vehicle as a whole.

Side view
In spite of its longer rear overhang, the new S-Class gives the
impression of being more compact than its forerunner. Its dynamic overall appearance is the result of the opposing curves
of the lines with a dropping line towards the rounded rear and
front and rear lights that a drawn further around the sides.
A luxurious quality is lent to the new S-Class by its slimmer,
specially adapted outside mirrors in a new design.

Panoramic sliding sunroof
Available as special equipment is an electrically powered panoramic sliding sunroof which includes an opaque roller blind
system carried at the sides. The front and rear roller blinds
can each be controlled separately.
All the sliding roofs for model series 222 are two-piece modular systems of which Module 1 is identical in all body variants. Module 2 is the adapter for the different variants. The
panoramic sliding sunroof has an internal mechanism. All its
elements move in a dry area, which is a great advantage in
terms of preventing dirt.
An innovative glass roof control system provides the best
possible aeroacoustic levels when the roof is tilted even at
high driving speeds.
When the glass module is moved to the tilt position while driving, its height is automatically adjusted to the optimum position for the noise level according to the vehicle speed. The
tilt of the glass panel is dynamically reduced in three stages.
When in the tilt position, the glass panel is lowered automatically if it starts to rain (dynamic rain closing function).
The lowering sequence depends on:
• the driving speed and
• the intensity of the rainfall.
The dynamic rain closing sequence can be manually aborted
by pushing or pulling the roof system switch. If aborted manually, dynamic rain closing starts again automatically after a
short waiting period when all the function requirements are
satisfied.

MAGIC VISION CONTROL
The fully heated wiper/washer system MAGIC VISION
CONTROL, that first appeared in the new SL-Class, model
series 231, is available as special equipment for the new
S-Class.
The washer fluid is distributed directly onto the windshield
through outlets in the wiper blades according to the motion
of the wiper arms. The washer fluid reservoir, the hoses and
the wiper blades are heated in order to ensure a clear view
even in sub-zero temperatures.
The principal advantage of this system is the targeted use of
the washer fluid to improve cleaning performance while simultaneously reducing consumption. It also means that there
is noticeably less obstruction of the view during the cleaning
sequence and the entire wiper blade is kept free of ice.

The luxurious appearance of a touring sedan is maintained
throughout the overall design of the interior compartment.
Circular air outlets, a high-quality analog clock and the generous use of wood trim parts round off the image. Aluminum
controls and metalized switch surfaces in three pearl-effect
colors convey a sense of high value.
Instrument panel
The focal points of the instrument panel are the central display and the instrument cluster with its ambiance backlighting. The 30.7 cm (12") color screen allows all the relevant
information to be displayed in a new format. The double-S
curve from the predecessor model series has been adopted
in the layout of the instrument panel. Wood is used almost
exclusively for the trim pieces.
One particular highlight in terms of comfort in the new
S-Class is the introduction of heated armrests in the center
console and in the doors, which are available as a component
of the Warmth & Comfort Package.

In model series 222 the instrument cluster and the central
display are positioned to provide one continuous screen area.

A heated armrest above the stowage compartment is additionally available as special equipment in the Warmth & Comfort
Package. LED technology is used for the stowage compartment illumination. The ambiance illumination consists of
many different lighting elements. Four of these are integrated
in the center console.
One particular highlight of the business center console are
the integrated tables which the passenger can swing out and
set in various positions. Another new feature of the rear center console in the S-Class is the introduction of temperaturecontrolled cup holders (optional) for the rear seats, which
enable drinks to be cooled or heated by means of a heating/
cooling system. The temperature-controlled cup holders can
also be used to store snacks.

The seats in the new S-Class have been greatly enhanced
over those of the forerunner model.
Standard equipment includes seat cushion length adjustment, electric head restraint height adjustment and 4-way
lumbar support integrated in the backrests of the driver and
front passenger seats, which guarantees optimum support for
the spine. A new feature in the S-Class is the ability to adjust
the head restraints in the horizontal direction too. It allows
the distance between the head and the restraint to be adjusted so as to considerably reduce the risk of whiplash injury to
the neck in the event of an accident.

Chauffeur Package
The Chauffeur Package includes the chauffeur position for
the front passenger seat, the EASY ADJUST head restraints
for driver and front passenger, the folding and removable
head restraint on the passenger side and a footrest on the
passenger side.
The chauffeur seat can be moved further into the front footwell compared to the predecessor model.
The front passenger rear seat leg rest switch can be used
to extend and retract the leg rest under the front passenger
seat for the rear-seat passenger.
In vehicles with rear entertainment system, the inclination of
the passenger-side rear display in adjusted according to the
backrest angle of the front passenger seat when it is moved
to the chauffeur position in order to provide the best viewing
angle for the rear passengers.
The extended recline position is available in combination with
the Chauffeur Package. This allows the front passenger seat
to be adjusted to a completely flat position, producing a continuous surface from the front passenger seat and rear seat.

One comfort seat variant and one reclining seat with leg rest
are available for the new S-Class. A business center console
is optionally available. The front passenger seat can be operated from the rear.
Rear head restraints
An 8-way luxury head restraint for the outer seats is available

Depending on the special equipment installed, heated armrests at the front and rear on the side doors and center
console are available for the first time in the S-Class with the

The standard seat heater consists of one heat mat for the
backrest and one seat cushion.
Seat heater PLUS
The seat heater PLUS is only available with the Warmth &
Comfort Package or combined with the Seating Comfort
Package. It consists of mats with two separate heater circuits
under the seat cushion and in the backrest.
The seat heater PLUS has different heating behavior, enabling
the seats to be warmed more quickly, which considerably
increases the comfort of the seat.
The balance of the seat heating can be coordinated via the
COMAND control panel, allowing the ratio of backrest to seat
cushion to be varied.
Dynamic multicontour seat
When a multicontour seat is chosen, and in the combination
with the Seating Comfort Package and the seat heater PLUS,
it offers the additional function of “ENERGIZING Massage”.
Seat ventilation
The seat ventilation system is used to ventilate the seat
cushions and backrests in three stages.
Seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger is only
available in combination with the standard seat heater. At
the rear it is available for the W222 only in combination with
the electrically adjustable rear seats and rear seat heaters or
with the climate-controlled front seats (in the V222 only in
combination with electrically adjustable rear seats).

Massage function
The S-Class features an extensive ENERGIZING Massage
function package for the driver and front passenger on front
seats with the Seating Comfort Package. For the rear seats
this is available via the multicontour seat.
The ENERGIZING Massage function allows the customer to
appreciate the principle of a “hot-stone massage” in the programs with activated heat. After a “preliminary massage”, the
occupants feel as if they have “hot stones” placed all over
their back.
The backrest contains a massage mat consisting of 14 air
chambers, which inflate or deflate via switching solenoid
valves according to a programmed sequence. The massage
heat pads are arranged over the middle air chambers and are
coordinated by an electronic control system. Fast-switching
solenoid valves allow each of the 14 chambers to be inflated
with air or deflated individually.
The occupant of the vehicle can choose any of six massage
programs, which differ in terms of the massage sequence,
i.e. the inflation sequence of the air chambers, and in terms
of speed and therefore effect. The intensity of each program
can be varied from “strong” to “weak”. Two of the six programs offer an additional heating effect in conjunction with
the air chambers. The ENERGIZING Massage programs last
for between 12 and 15 minutes. All of the programs can be
operated by means of menus in the COMAND control panel.

Maintenance strategy
The current Mercedes-Benz maintenance strategy is also
applicable to the model series 222. It is therefore entirely
integrated in the ASSYST PLUS maintenance system of the
Extended Maintenance Strategy.
There is a fixed maintenance interval of “every 25,000 km/
12 months” (ECE), with the exception of any potential country-specific kilometer intervals that vary. Furthermore, the
A and B Services continue to apply alternately, as well as a
“PLUS Package” that the customer can choose at any time.
The familiar interval from the Mercedes-Benz maintenance
strategy of “every 250,000 km/15 years” for replacing the
fuel filter and coolant in gasoline engines has now been replaced by the new interval of “every 200,000 km/10 years”.
Optimized workshop procedure
The maintenance procedure for cars has been revised along
the lines of the 2010 workshop process. This eliminates
duplication and optimizes unclear and obsolete procedures
and methods. These improvements enable an efficient and
reliable maintenance procedure to be achieved that meets
the high standards of Mercedes-Benz. In addition to the familiar vehicle-specific service sheet, a standardized reception
report applicable to all model series will in future form part of
the maintenance procedure.

New technical features
The BlueTEC models of model series 222 are now equipped
with an external filling feature for topping up the AdBlue®.
However, in spite of this external filling feature, filling with
AdBlue® remains a constituent part of the A and B Services.

Predictable costs and reliable planning: Mercedes-Benz
passenger car service contracts
Which service contract suits me best? The vehicle-specific
service contracts enable the car customer to choose individual protection while also allowing him to select the best of
the different product variants available to him.
The warranty extension is available to purchase as an entrylevel product, and is aimed at safety-oriented, price-sensitive
customers. These customers are protected against unexpected repair costs in the long-term even after the manufacturer
warranty expires.
With a maintenance contract, the focus is on cost transparency and reliable planning. In this case, all maintenance
costs are covered for the agreed term. The services include
all maintenance operations as per the service booklet including additional operations that are “subject to separate
invoice”.
The full service contract, as a premium product, combines
the aforementioned maintenance and repair work with all
wear-related operations. With this all-in-one protection package, the customer can be sure that their Mercedes-Benz
will stay in top form for a long time.
The availability and product names for the Mercedes-Benz
Service Contracts are defined on a country-specific basis.

Additional calibration drive for initializing the Night View
Assist Plus
Night View Assist Plus in the S-Class features an additional
infrared camera for long range mounted behind the radiator trim. Calibration of the long-range camera required an
additional calibration tool (see “Special tools” chapter). The
calibration tool includes electrically heated targets for the
long-range camera, which are supplied by the 12 V power
outlet in the vehicle.

Ethernet diagnosis over IP
The S-Class is the first vehicle with Ethernet vehicle access
for programming large data quantities in the telematics
systems. The bandwidth of 100 Mbit/s makes it possible to
program the Digital Owner's Manual at the factory and to
program the COMAND Online and the MOST components during servicing directly via the tester without a separate DVD.
When commissioning the COMAND Online, it is absolutely
essential to program the Digital Owner's Manual at the same
time. The software for the Digital Owner's Manual is not installed on the tester, but must be ordered through the EPC
according to the delivery configuration of the vehicle.
For general diagnosis on the S-Class, a Star Diagnosis unit
with SDConnect or an XENTRY Kit is required. Programming
of the Digital Owner's Manual, the COMAND unit and MOST
components via a Star Diagnosis unit additionally requires an
“SDConnect DoIP”. In is not possible to program the systems
via Ethernet in WLAN mode! For this reason, the SDConnect
DolP must be connected to the Star Diagnosis unit with the
green cable when programming these components.

Diesel misfueling safeguard
The diesel version of the new S-Class is the first to feature a
diesel misfueling safeguard. This prevents incorrect fueling,
e.g. with gasoline. The diesel misfueling safeguard is located
in the filler pipe and uses a flap mechanism at the tank opening to prevent it from being filled with the wrong type of fuel.
The flap can only be opened with the larger-diameter diesel
nozzle, so it is only possible to refuel with diesel fuel. The flap
closes automatically after refueling.

The S 500 is equipped with the advanced 8-cylinder engine
M 278.
The principal features of the engine include:

Cooling system
The new S-Class contains two independently operating
coolant circuits: a high-temperature (HT) circuit that cools
the turbochargers and EGR valves as well as the engine
and the cylinder head, and a low-temperature (LT) circuit
for regulating the temperatures of the charge air, the transmission and the power electronics in vehicles with hybrid
powerplants.
In the supercharged diesel and gasoline engines OM 642 and
M 278 the two circuits are entirely independent.
In vehicles with the M 276 HYBRID, however, there is a connection between the two circuits which can be deliberately
opened or closed via a thermostat according to the coolant
temperature.

The exhaust system consists of:

Exhaust aftertreatment
A new feature in the S-Class is the external AdBlue® filling
feature on the BlueTEC models, with a filler connection
behind the fuel filler door. The AdBlue® tank with delivery
module is located on the right behind the fuel tank. It has a
capacity of 31.7 liters.
A water-cooled AdBlue® metering valve (Y129) for metering
the AdBlue® reduction agent is installed on the exhaust pipe
immediately after the diesel particulate filter.
The connecting points are located upstream of the oxidation
catalytic converter and upstream of the SCR catalytic converter. For repairs, it is possible to make a connecting point
upstream of the rear muffler so that the SCR catalytic converter and the rear muffler can be replaced separately.

The connecting points in models with engine M 276 are located upstream of the switchover valve. With engine M 278,
connecting points are provided in front of the firewall catalytic converter and before the center muffler. For repairs on
vehicles with both engines, it is possible to make a connecting point upstream of the rear muffler so that the center and
rear mufflers can be replaced separately.
On vehicles with engine M 278 there is a pneumatic exhaust
flap inside the left and right rear mufflers at the muffler outlet, which is actuated by the engine control unit via a switchover valve.

7G-TRONIC PLUS
All models are equipped with the optimized 7G-TRONIC PLUS
automatic transmission including ECO start/stop function.
The 7G-TRONIC PLUS has been optimized by developments
to the torque converter and the main transmission. It features
a new generation of torque converter which offers improved
dynamic response characteristics combined with reduced
fuel consumption.
The consumption-reducing measures include a reduction in
drag through a new bearing at the oil pump, as well as a new
automatic transmission fluid (FE-ATF).
The oil change intervals have been extended because the
transmission fluid is subjected to less energy due to the minimization of drag.
Fully integrated transmission control (VGS4-0)
With the advances in its hardware components and the optimization of the implemented software, the introduction of
the more powerful transmission control brings the following
benefits:
• Lower fuel consumption
• Higher shift quality
• More accurate determination of measurements relevant
to shift operations and faster evaluation of the measured
values
Automatic transmission mode button
Two different transmission modes can be selected with the
automatic transmission mode button:
• Economy mode “E”: Moving off in 2nd gear except in
shift range one. The gearchanges occur at lower engine
speeds.
• Sport mode “S”: Moving off in 1st gear in all driving
situations.

The hybrid drive system comprises the control systems for
the combustion engine, for the power electronics control unit
with the electrical machine and for the high-voltage system
with the battery management system control unit. The master
control unit is the engine control unit that contains the operating strategy and the major assembly coordinator, which it
uses to coordinate all the torques in the hybrid drive system
to produce the lowest possible system losses and the best
possible fuel economy. The powertrain control unit contains
the high-voltage energy management system and coordinates
all the energy flows in the hybrid drive system. The engine
control unit acts as the interface (gateway) between three
CAN bus systems (the hybrid, powertrain and engine CANs)
and connects with the following components in the CAN:
• Power electronics control unit
• Battery management system control unit
• Fully integrated transmission control unit
• Electronic Stability Program control unit
• Powertrain control unit
Function
The functions of the components in the hybrid drive system
include the following:
The power electronics control unit monitors and controls the
electrical machine. It transforms the three-phase AC voltage
generated by the electrical machine into 126 V DC and vice
versa. Integrated in the power electronics module is a DC/
DC converter in the form of a bidirectional DC voltage converter producing high and low DC voltages and transferring
them between the high-voltage system and the 12 V onboard electrical system.
The battery management system control unit monitors the
high-voltage battery that is integrated in the high-voltage
battery module and acts as an energy store for the 126 V
direct voltage. In order to charge the high-voltage battery,
the combustion engine drives the electrical machine, which
then generates AC voltage. This voltage is transformed into
126 V direct voltage by the power electronics. To recover
kinetic energy or produce requested braking torque, the
electrical machine is operated as a generator and converts
kinetic energy into electrical energy which is then stored.
The control unit of the “fully integrated transmission control”
is responsible for monitoring and controlling the automatic
transmission.
The engine control unit is responsible for controlling the
timing of the combustion engine and for calculating the specified axle torque by prioritizing the external torque requests
and implementing it. To produce the drive torque, either the
combustion engine only is used (conventional mode), or the
electrical machine only (electric mode), or the electrical
machine in combination with the combustion engine (hybrid
mode). The electrical machine provides motor torque when
boosting or operates as a generator in the regenerative braking phase.

The design of the front axle has been adopted from the predecessor model series 221 and improved. It is based on the
principle of the 4-link axle. The steering knuckle connecting
the upper and lower steering planes is a forged aluminum
part on the new S-Class. The integral carrier is made of highstrength aluminum sheet and is bolted directly to the body.

As the ball joints are not self-inhibiting, the control
arms can be removed from the steering knuckle without using special tools.
Camber and caster are corrected using different repair bearings from the predecessor.

The design of the rear axle has also been adopted from the
predecessor series 221 and developed. The kinematics and
elastokinematics of the axle have been adjusted in the following respects:
• Neutral to slightly understeering self-steering behavior
• Optimized fine tuning of the wheel control elastomer bearings to improve vehicle dynamics.
When spring control arms are replaced, of generally whenever the bolted connection between the suspension strut and
the spring control arm is undone, it is absolutely essential to
observe the correct installed position of the suspension strut.
Failure to do so will result in premature wear of the strut.

The existing special tool W 221 589 00 43 can continue to be used for removing/installing the rear axle
and the suspension subframe carrier. An adapter plate
has merely been added to this set in order to press in
the rear suspension subframe carrier.
The rear axle spring control arm has two holes for
fastening the suspension strut. The suspension strut
must be mounted at the appropriate hole according to
the body variant.

AIRMATIC with continuous damping control
The new S-Class is fitted with an air suspension system with
continuous damping control as standard equipment. The
AIRMATIC system is the combination of air suspension with
continuous damping adjustment in which the damping at
each wheel is adapted individually to suit the nature of the
road surface and the driving style.
The driver can set a custom driving level by pressing the vehicle level button on the Audio/COMAND control panel.
The air suspension system has bee revised and developed.
The principal new features are as follows:
• The air spring bellows harden only slightly, which improves ride comfort.
• The continuous damping control provides significantly
greater potential for automatic adaptation of the damping
characteristic in individual driving situations.
• Better tuning from the aspects of comfort and
responsiveness.
• The dampers have one stepless proportional solenoid
valve for the compression stage and one for the rebound
stage. This reduces the oscillations in the oil column inside the damper resulting in less operating noise.
• The air suspension struts on the rear axle are connected
to the body with decoupling bearings. This reduces rolling
noise.

each side of the rear shelf which must be cut along
the perforations and folded up in case of repairs. The
insulation under the rear shelf is perforated in order

The new MAGIC BODY CONTROL is based on the proven
ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension.
the vehicle's deviation from its lane. When the wheel loads on
each side of an axle are different, the toe-in settings of the
front and rear axles generate a rotary motion in the vehicle
that counteracts the crosswind.
The MAGIC BODY CONTROL system is a fully supporting
suspension system, i.e. the system is capable of actively adjusting the forces at each wheel with the aid of four hydraulic
suspension struts.
Pressing the vehicle level button on the Audio/COMAND
control panel selects between normal level and a raised level,
depending on the vehicle speed, with each press of the button changing to the other level.
In addition, a stereo multifunction camera is located in the
center of the windshield at the top.
The stereo multifunction camera captures images of the road
and calculates a height profile according to the lane for the
left and right sides of the vehicle. The stereo multifunction
camera transmits the data over the chassis FlexRayTM to
the MAGIC BODY CONTROL control unit. With the aid of this
data, the suspension can be preemptively adjusted to suit
the anticipated condition of the road. The Road Service Scan
function is not available in Sport mode “S”.
Crosswind compensation function
Using the calculated lateral force produced by the crosswind,
the suspension can be actively tightened in order to reduce

Electric power steering (ES)
The new S-Class is equipped as standard with an electromechanically assisted steering gear.
The electric power steering consists of the rack-and-pinion
steering gear, the electric power steering torque sensor,
the electric power steering actuator motor and the electric
power steering control unit. The electric power steering provides stepless speed-dependent regulation of the steering
assistance.

Brake system
The brake system is designed as a hydraulic dual-circuit
brake system with ADAPTIVE BRAKE control as standard.
The S 400 HYBRID has a brake system featuring the regenerative braking system (RBS). RBS is a modular braking and
vehicle dynamics control system (in the event of failure, only
the affected functions are shut down). It is a development of
the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and contains several
functions including those of ESP and regenerative braking.
Regenerative braking is braking torque that can be split via
software according to requirements. Depending on the driving situation, the ESP control unit splits the total braking
torque commended by the driver into a regenerative component (to be provided by the drivetrain) and a hydraulic component (to be provided by the wheel brakes) and requests the
regenerative component from the engine control unit. The
regenerative braking component always involves the recovery
of braking energy.
In the hybrid vehicles, the Premium ESP system has been
modified so that, when the regenerative braking system is
operating properly, the hydraulic connection between the
master brake cylinder and the rear axle brake circuit is closed
via a separation valve integrated in the ESP system. This means that the rear axle can be braked either via the electrical
generator or via the hydraulic unit. The additional intake hose
shown in yellow supplies brake fluid for the autonomous pressure buildup by the ESP system at the rear axle. If the hydraulic unit or the master brake cylinder is replaced, this hose
must be bled with the aid of Xentry Diagnostics.

Composite brake disk
The new S-Class is fitted with new composite brake disks.
The composite brake disk is in two parts and consists of a
profiled sheet steel casing on the inside and a toothed brake
plate made of cast iron. The combined anticorrosion concept
that has been developed for this
involves galvanic coating of the metal casing with additional
painting of the entire component.
Advantage
The weight saving per component is around 1 to 1.5 kg, depending on size, compared to a conventional brake disk.
Electric parking brake
As in the model series 166, 172, 231 and 246, the parking
brake is electrically operated. It makes use of a combined
floating brake caliper with electric parking brake function.

When handling the brake disks, shock loads on the
metal casing, or on the brake plate in the installed
state, are to be avoided. The brake disk should be
handled only by the friction ring. Each replacement
composite brake disk is separately boxed.

Overview
The systems in the vehicle must be networked in order to allow the necessary information to be exchanged.
Chassis FlexRay™
A new feature introduced in the S-Class is the chassis
FlexRay™, which replaced the previous chassis CAN.
The following data bus systems are used for networking:
• Controller Area Network (CAN)
• Chassis FlexRay™ (Flex E)
• Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
The chassis FlexRay™ is a serial, deterministic and errortolerant bus system. The chassis FlexRay™ consists of one
twisted two-wire data line that transmits differential signals
in order to improve the resistance to interference. Each connected control unit can send or receive data in the form of
voltage pulses. In contrast to the CAN, the individual control
units are not connected to the potential distributor. The different branches come together at the electronic ignition lock
(EZS). The control units within the branches are connected
in series. The lines are diagnosed in a guided procedure via
Xentry Diagnostics by means of a resistance measurement.
The starting point is always the EZS gateway. In order for
the chassis FlexRay™ to operate correctly, both the EZS and
either the ESP control unit or the electric power steering control unit must be operational. Furthermore the terminating
resistors in the control units of the branch concerned must
be complete.

At the positive terminal of the battery there is a pyrotechnical
separator (pyrofuse) that isolates the starter line from the
battery in the event of a crash.

The energy management system manages the provision and
consumption of electrical energy. The aim is to ensure that
the engine can be started at any time and that all electrical
consumers receive a reliable power supply. In hybrid vehicles
(S 400 HYBRID) there is also an interrelationship between the
high-voltage and low-voltage on-board electrical systems.
In the new S-Class a 230 V socket will be available as special
equipment (code U67). This does not apply for all national
versions; some (e.g. USA/CDN) feature a 115 V socket.

Exterior and interior lights
In the new S-Class, all the exterior and interior lights, from
the glove compartment illumination to the headlamps, are
LEDs. Incandescent bulbs are no longer installed anywhere in
the vehicle.
In the special equipment variant of full LED with Intelligent
Light System in combination with the optional Night View
Assist Plus, there is also an infrared LED module installed in
the headlamp.
Headlamps
The new S-Class is the first car to feature static full LED
headlamps as standard.
In all variants, all the light functions are performed by LEDs.
Dynamic full LED headlamps with Intelligent Light System
(ILS) are optionally available. These include:
• Dynamic curve illumination
• Cornering lights
• Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS
• Extended fog light function
• Motorway lights
Thermal management of front lamp unit
The front lamp units are fitted with one sensor for each light
function, which registers the temperature in the vicinity of the
actuated LED. The sensor actuates fan motor 1 and fan motor 2 of the left or right lamp unit.
Adaptive Highbeam Assist PLUS for the first time allows the
high beam headlamps to be kept on permanently while driving by masking out other road users detected in the beams'
cone of light. This system also uses the new stereo multifunction camera. If the imaging system detects a oncoming traffic
or a vehicle ahead, it actuates a mechanism in the headlamp
module. This masks the relevant area in the light cone of the
LED headlamps so that the other driver is not dazzled. The
system detects the any glare resulting from the increased use
of the high beams and highly reflective signs at the roadside,
and dims the headlamps specifically to avoid this.

Rear lights
All the light functions of the rear lights are performed by
LEDs. The turn signal lights and the left and right brake lights
have different intensity settings for day and night in compliance with the legal requirements. The advantage of this is
that the brightness of the light functions is always adequate
for following vehicles according to the traffic situation.
The taillights/side marker lamps (USA/Canada) are distinguished from the brake lights by the different red shades of the
LEDs.
Rear fog light
The LED rear fog light is located centrally at the bottom in the
bumper.
Third brake light
The LED third brake light is mounted inside the upper area of
the rear window.
Interior lights
These lights are actuated by the instrument cluster. In addition, the overhead control panel contains a light strip with
five LEDs.
Extension of ambiance illumination
The ambiance illumination provides indirect illumination of
the vehicle interior. The intensity of the illumination, its color
and the zones lit by the ambiance illumination can be adjusted via a menu in the COMAND Online controller unit.
The coronas around the instrument cluster and central display are illuminated whenever the setting "Display" or "All" is
selected.
The intensity of the illumination can be adjusted in five
brightness levels and seven colors. The driver can choose to
illuminate the zones Front, Display, Rear and All. When the
ambiance illumination is activated, the footwell lamps, the
door inside handle illumination and the upward lighting use
the same color and brightness settings.
The components of the ambiance illumination are actuated
at the set intensity when the central locking is unlocked.
Opening a door causes the ambiance illumination to be actuated at 100 % of the possible illumination intensity, with the
exception of the corona, which maintains its original intensity.
When the doors are closed, the ambiance illumination components return to their previous intensity settings.

A 2D hand scanner is essential for commissioning the
LED headlamps. This hand scanner is already used
to scan the injector codings for engine OM 651. The
scanner can be ordered as a special tool.

PRE-SAFE® Impulse seat belt buckle tensioners
The tightening of the seat belts on both sides is triggered by
one centrally located gas generator. At the belt buckle end
the EVO tensioner features a belt force limiter function. In the
even of high forces in the region of the lap belt, this releases
the belt strap in a controlled manner to reduce the loads
on the occupants. The EVO tensioner seat belt buckle together with the reel tensioner form the so-called PRE-SAFE®
Impulse system.
Pedestrian protection
The new S-Class is available with a further improvement of
the pedestrian protection system. This pedestrian protection
system can reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a
collision with a pedestrian. The engine hood hinges in the
area of the A-pillar are raised quickly in order to enlarge the
space between the hood and the components underneath.
This means that the pedestrian does not impact the components under the engine hood directly.
The belt airbags expand the seat belt itself and reduce the
risk of injury in the chest area. The rear belt airbag squibs are
triggered by the supplemental restraint system control unit.
Belt airbags
An innovation in the new S-Class is the first use of a belt
airbag for the outer rear seats in combination with the active
belt buckle. The belt airbag is a 3-point seat belt system in
which the belt strap is woven in one piece with tear seams. In
the event of a crash, the inflatable inner part is inflated by a
gas generator at the anchor fitting and deploys along the tear
seams.

Active belt buckle
Another new feature in the S-Class is the active belt buckle,
which is available in combination with the optional rear PRESAFE® system.
Reversible PRE-SAFE® belt tensioning at the rear
The active belt buckle is adjustable vertically to different positions. To take up the slack in hazard situations, it is moved
away from the standard position to the PRE-SAFE® position.
The height-adjustable belt buckle heads on the outer rear
seats perform the following comfort and safety functions:
• Extending the belt buckle head when the corresponding
door is opened
• Illuminating the belt buckle head by means of an LED
optical fiber
• Lowering the belt buckle head to reduce slack after the
belt is fastened
• Extending to the offering position after an accident
• Reversible PRE-SAFE® belt tensioning at the rear by
further lowering the belt buckle head
The occupants are held on their seats in order to optimize the
protective effect of the belt system in a potential collision. If
the car rolls over, the reversible belt tensioning function is
also triggered. Depending on the situation, the strap of the
seat belt is tightened at different speeds and different
strengths by adjusting the position of the belt buckle.
When the PRE-SAFE® action is complete, a reversing
sequence is initiated to release the increased belt tension
(except in the case of a rollover).

General information on PRE-SAFE® PLUS
The PRE-SAFE® PLUS function extends preventive occupant
protection in the vehicle in the case of an imminent rear-end
collision. The traffic situation behind the system vehicle is
monitored via the radar sensor located in the center of the
rear bumper. By evaluating the closing speed and the remaining distance to the vehicle behind, the system calculates the
time remaining until a collision. On the basis of this, various
measures are initiated to mitigate the potential consequences of a collision for the passengers.
The possible measures are illustrated chronologically in the
diagram below:

If a vehicle is detected behind by the rear radar sensor and
evaluated as critical, its driver is initially warned by the actuation of the rear turn signal lights on the system vehicle.
If the radar sensors control unit computes a probable rearend collision from the closing speed of the vehicle behind,
the longitudinal PRE-SAFE® occupant protection measures
are activated. The seat belts are tightened, the front passenger backrest is moved to the upright position and, if fitted,
the air cushions are inflated. The rear PRE-SAFE® occupant
protection features are only included in the optional PRESAFE® at rear package (code 305).

In vehicles with Canada version (code 460) and USA
version (code 494), there is no warning of the traffic
behind by the PRE-SAFE® PLUS function.
Function sequence for preparing the vehicle for collision
(escalation stage t2)

t = 2 s after impact:
After a rear-end collision, the brake pressure is held for
t = 2 s if it had been increased previously (escalation stage
t2). Then the brake pressure is reduced again to allow the
vehicle to be maneuvered.
If the vehicle behind continues to approach, the next stage is
initiated under certain conditions. If the system vehicle is stationary and the system detects a brake command from the
driver, the vehicle is preventively “secured” by increasing the
brake pressure. This measure helps to prevent a further collision with a vehicle in front, for example, or stop the vehicle
from being pushed into the intersection. It can also reduce
the potential of neck injuries to the occupants.
bbNote
When a rear-end collision has been detected and has
occurred, the PRE-SAFE® PLUS function is no longer
available until activated via the diagnostic tester. This
means that, when the accident damage has been
repaired, the function must be reactivated using the
diagnostic unit.

Traffic Sign Assist is based on the familiar Speed Limit Assist.
The range of traffic signs recognized by the mono or stereo
multifunction camera has been expanded to include the

and in the map view of the navigation system in the Audio/

If the multifunction camera detects No Entry signage (combination of No Entry signs on left and right and a blue arrow)
when the vehicle drives onto a freeway or expressway and
the vehicle is therefore traveling in the wrong direction, the
No Entry sign is displayed in the instrument cluster and in the

Wrong-way driver warning
The warning message “Check Direction!” is displayed in the
instrument cluster and an acoustic warning is sounded from
the instrument cluster speaker. This acoustic warning can be
canceled after 5 seconds at the earliest.

Two different multifunction cameras are available for the new
S-Class depending on the equipment fitted: the mono multifunction camera and a new stereo multifunction camera.
Stereo multifunction camera
The stereo multifunction camera consists of two high-resolution mono cameras housed approximately 20 centimeters
apart in a single housing. While a mono camera merely
estimates the distances to objects, the stereo multifunction
camera can measure the range to an object as well as the
height of the object above the road. This is made possible by
the perspective differences between the left and right optical
paths. The evaluation electronics in the stereo multifunction
camera therefore employ the same effect that enables humans to see in three dimensions: the parallax shift between
two images. At a moderate distance of 20 to 30 meters, the
stereo multifunction camera can calculate the range to an
object to an accuracy of within 20 to 30 centimeters. This
high resolution also exists under more difficult conditions; for
example, when several objects are very close together, when
objects are partially obscured, or when the contrast between
the object and the background is low. One significant property of the stereo multifunction camera is its ability to distinguish shadows and road markings from real objects.
As well as the three-dimensional location of a detected object, the stereo multifunction camera also provides crucial
additional information: For each pixel of the detected object,
it is possible to calculate a direction of movement on the
horizontal, vertical and longitudinal axes of the object. This
clearly shows whether and where an object is moving. In
combination with the object classification (e.g. pedestrian)
by means of common features, a high degree of certainty is
achieved. It is possible, for example, to calculate the exact
impact point of a collision and therefore make the best possible use of the time interval remaining until the impact for
protective measures. The stereo multifunction camera assists
with this across the entire vehicle speed range.

The new DISTRONIC PLUS with Steer Assist extends the
assistance to the driver in his task of longitudinal control by
adding lateral guidance, conveniently relieving the driver of a
great deal of stress. This is especially useful on long journeys,
in traffic jams and flowing traffic in the speed range from
v = 0 to 200 km/h (v = 0 to 120 mph). It does not absolve
the driver of his task of keeping the car in lane, but is rather
aimed at reducing his workload and therefore increasing
his comfort. Furthermore, the assistance occurs only within
certain defined steering torque limits. Large steering angles
at low speed, for example when negotiating mountain roads,
cannot be supported.
Steer Assist comprises the following functions:
• Track guidance v = 0 to 200 km/h
• Object guidance v = 0 to 60 km/h
• Detection of driver activity/steering intervention
Function sequence for object guidance
In urban traffic or in a traffic jam on the freeway, for example,
lane markings may not always be detected due to the short
distance from the vehicle in front. This also applies when
lane markings are poor/unrecognizable or ambiguous (e.g.
at roadworks). For this an additional calculation basis is required to compute the lane. In this case, prominent objects
(preceding vehicles) in the same lane are also evaluated. The
effect of parallax shift (disparity) means that the stereo multifunction camera is able not only to optically detect the preceding vehicle, but also to measure the distance to the vehicle
and its dimensions. The image data from the two cameras is
conditioned by the integrated stereo multifunction camera
control unit and relayed to the radar sensors control unit.
This compares the image data with the signals from the radar
sensor system. The transition from lane-based to objectbased lateral guidance occurs continuously and fluently at
speeds below 60 km/h.
Function sequence for track guidance
The stereo multifunction camera constantly scans in images
of the lane markings on the road at a fixed sampling rate.
From the image sequences and the measurements resulting
from the images of the lane markings, the integrated control
unit of the stereo multifunction camera computes a driving
lane. The integrated control unit of the stereo multifunction
camera forwards this lane data to the radar sensors control
unit.

Function sequence for steering power assistance
The required steering assistance is calculated from the steering moment applied by the driver and the vehicle speed,
and the electric power steering actuator motor is actuated
accordingly. As the vehicle speed increases, the steering assistance is reduced.
Function sequence for detection of driver activity
The electric power steering control unit continuously evaluates the steering moment applied by the driver via the torque
sensor. If the control unit detects insufficient or non-existent
torque on the steering wheel for a period of 10 s (“hands-off
detection”), a message is sent to the radar sensors control
unit. At the same time, the warning appears in the instrument
cluster: it displays a gray steering wheel icon with red hands.
If the driver fails to react to the message within the next 5 s,
an acoustic warning is sounded through the instrument cluster speaker. In this case the radar sensors control unit passivates the Steer Assist function. This is indicated to the driver
via a gray steering wheel icon in the instrument cluster. When
Steer Assist is activated and ready to intervene, a green steering wheel icon appears.

In the following traffic situations object guidance is terminated and Steer Assist is switched to the passive state:
• If the vehicle in front changes lane during object
guidance, the system vehicle terminates this and automatically switches from object-based to lane-based lateral
guidance, provided it can detect a lane. If the stereo multifunction camera is unable to detect a lane, the system
vehicle follows the car in front.
• If there is another vehicle in the blind spot when the vehicle in front changes lanes, Steer Assist is switched to
the passive state and object guidance is terminated in
order to avoid a collision.
• If the system vehicle is following a vehicle that drives very
close to an obstacle (e.g. a parked car), object guidance
is terminated and Steer Assist is switched to the passive
state in order to avoid a collision with the obstacle.

BAS PLUS
The BAS PLUS function assists the driver in the event of
emergency braking. The braking assistance necessary for
this is calculated according to the situation. This means that
the braking is automatically as intensive as necessary (maximum approx. a = 10 m/s²). In this way an imminent collision
can be prevented or at least its consequences mitigated.
In the speed range from v = 7 to 250 km/h the BAS PLUS
function is activated in potentially hazardous situations. The
BAS PLUS function in the new S-Class has been extended to
include detection of crossing objects and people.
BAS PLUS with Intersection Assist
Brake Assist System PLUS with Intersection Assist detects objects crossing in front at vehicle speeds from
v = 7 to 72 km/h depending on the nature of the objects
(height, width) and their closing speed.
Objects are detected by the following sensors and cameras:
• Front long-range radar sensor
• Stereo multifunction camera
• Short-range radar
Under ideal conditions, the front long-range radar sensor can
detect objects up to a distance of 200 m. The stereo multifunction camera detects the relative position of the crossing
object to the driving corridor and its lateral closing speed.

BAS PLUS can also sense pedestrians to the side of the vehicle. They are detected by means of the long-range sensor
system and the stereo multifunction camera.
If there are any objects within the hazard area, the instrument cluster provides a visual or visual-acoustic warning. If
the driver then brakes with insufficient brake force, BAS PLUS
increases the brake pressure for effective hazard braking, if
necessary up to an emergency stop.

The pedestrian detection feature expands the PRE-SAFE®
Brake function by adding detection of people in the vehicle's
path.
PRE-SAFE® Brake is active in the vehicle speed range from
v = 7 to 200 km/h. In the case of stationary obstacles, PRESAFE® Brake is activated only up to a maximum speed of
v = 72 km/h and reacts to:
• Obstacles, e.g. stopping or parked vehicles in the car's
path
• Pedestrians in the car's path
When PRE-SAFE® Brake registers the risk of a collision with
obstacles in the detection range of the radar sensor system
or the stereo multifunction camera, the instrument cluster
provides a visual or visual-acoustic warning. If the driver
fails to react (evasive maneuver, BAS PLUS-assisted hazard
braking), an autonomous partial braking action is initiated. If
there is still no reaction to this from the driver, an emergency
stop is performed and the vehicle is braked to a standstill,
provided all the requirements are satisfied. In the best case,
accidents can be avoided at speeds of up to 50 km/h.

The function of Attention Assist has been expanded by the

trip (ignition on)
• Attention Assist deactivated status, e.g. at vehicle speeds
v < 60 km/h or > 200 km/h
In “Sensitive” mode the Attention Assist function reacts more
sensitively and issues warnings earlier than in “Standard”
mode. In “Off” mode the output of warnings is suppressed,
but the system continues to analyze the driving behavior.
Therefore, if the system is switched on while driving, it can
refer to all the data collected during the entire journey.
Most recently selected active mode
The operating mode (“Standard” or “Sensitive”) that was
selected prior to a driving sequence is activated again when
the ignition is switched back on. If the system is switched off
while driving, the most recently selected mode (“Standard”
or “Sensitive”) is reactivated after a restart.
Rest stop display
If the warning threshold is exceeded, the driver receives
a warning in the instrument cluster and also, when on the
freeway, the nearest rest stops are displayed in the Audio/
COMAND display. Only premium rest stops with filling stations and catering are shown.

Active Blind Spot Assist uses short-range radar to monitor
the zones on either side that are outside the driver's field
of view and cannot be seen in the outside mirrors (“blind
spots”). The driver is alerted when there is a vehicle in this
area.
Furthermore, Active Blind Spot Assist can initiate course-correcting brake interventions immediately prior to an imminent
side-on collision during a lane change maneuver, taking into
account the surroundings of the system vehicle (the driver's
own vehicle). This also requires monitoring of the traffic in
front of the vehicle in order to avoid collisions with other road
users (including oncoming traffic) due to a possible change
of course. In addition to the warning indicators in the outside mirrors, a warning (showing the system vehicle and the
vehicle detected in the right or left blind spot) is displayed in
the instrument cluster.

Active Lane Keeping Assist
The advanced Active Lane Keeping Assist can now also intervene when the vehicle inadvertently strays across a broken
line if the adjacent lane is occupied and therefore there
could be a risk of collision when changing lanes. The system
detects this by means of the information from the stereo
camera and the radar system. This has been expanded to
include a rear sensor that operates in conjunction with the
other sensors in the front and rear bumpers.
Active Lane Keeping Assist operates in the vehicle speed
range from 60 to 200 km/h. If action from the driver is
detected, e.g. active steering, braking or acceleration and
activated turn signals, the warning and the course-correcting
brake intervention are suppressed.
Critical situations that can be identified by Active Lane
Keeping Assist include, for example, overtaking vehicles or
vehicles to be overtaken, and parallel traffic; however, the
system is also effective in the case of oncoming traffic. If
the adjacent lane is detected to be occupied as the vehicle
crosses the lane marking, the system not only warns the driver haptically by means of pulsed steering wheel vibrations,
it also corrects the vehicle's course with a braking action on
one side via the ESP® system. It therefore perfectly complements the Active Blind Spot Assist system and for the first
time enables frequently serious collisions with oncoming traffic to be avoided.

Active Parking Assist in the new S-Class includes the following new features:

Monitoring zones
The distance sensors are activated according to the direction
of travel.
The parking system uses an ultrasonic measuring system to
register the distance from the vehicle to an obstacle. While
driving at speeds below v = 36 km/h, the system measures
and stores parallel and perpendicular parking spaces on both
sides of the vehicle, and can park or unpark the car semiautomatically at the driver's request.
The monitored zone at the front measures a maximum
of 100 cm, while the monitored zone at the rear is max.
120 cm.
The front/rear zones and the front/rear corners are monitored by the appropriate sensors.
The driver is notified of the current distance between the
vehicle and an obstacle via the “parking system warning
display” in the instrument cluster and the parking system
warning indicator at the rear of the headliner. An acoustic
warning also sounds from the instrument cluster at distances
< 30 cm.

Parking and unparking with active brake intervention
The driver is assisted during parking and unparking maneuvers by active intervention by the brake system. The system
is activated automatically when the engine is started, but it
can also be deactivated and reactivated manually by pressing
the “Parking System” button in the driver-side instrument
panel button group. Parking and unparking are assisted at
speeds up to v < 10 km/h.
When an appropriate parking space is detected and the
transmission is put into “R”, the question “Activate Park
Assist?” appears in the instrument cluster. When confirmed
with the OK button, Park Assist is activated. The instrument
cluster displays the warning “Pay attention to your surroundings” in combination with the message “Please accelerate
yourself”. The driver can now take his hands off the steering
wheel; all he needs to do is change gear and accelerate. The
parking system control unit uses the size and position of the
measured parking space and the relative position of the vehicle to calculate the required steering angle.
When the distance to the end of the parking space falls
below 30 cm, the driver is alerted by the lighting of the first
red segment of the display on the relevant side. At the same
time the parking system control unit sends information about
the remaining distance to the obstacle to the ESP control
unit. This computes the necessary braking torque for the
vehicle, and the vehicle is braked. Braking occurs at the
necessary maneuvering points as well as at the final parking
position.

The vehicle can only be unparked under semi-automatic control if it was parked semi-automatically beforehand. The unparking sequence is complete when Active Parking Assist has

Reversing camera
The reversing camera is an optical parking and maneuvering
aid. Its tasks include scanning the surroundings of the reversing vehicle, generating dynamic and static guide lines and
transmitting image data to the COMAND Online controller
unit. The camera's images are scanned with an extended
angle of vision of > 180° and are conditioned accordingly by
the reversing camera.
The reversing camera function enables the driver to select
between the following parking modes:
• Maneuvering mode
• Trailer mode (with code 550 Trailer hitch)
• Wide-angle mode
This selection is made via the system menu of the COMAND
Online controller unit at the relevant operating level.
On the basis of the vehicle dimensions, its speed and the
steering angle, the current path of the vehicle is shown in the
Audio/COMAND display.
The lens of the reversing camera is protected against dirt
by a camera cover. The camera cover is opened and closed
automatically according to the status of the reversing camera
(activated or deactivated). Above a speed of v > 30 km/h
(regardless of whether a calibration sequence is in progress)
or after “ignition off” at circuit 15 it is closed automatically. If
it is not calibrating, the camera closes soon after the maneuvering sequence is complete.

Wide-angle mode
Wide-angle mode assists the driver in reversing out into a
complex traffic situation. The area behind is shown in the
Audio/COMAND display as a three-part split screen view
with an angle of > 180°. This gives the driver an early view,
e.g. when reversing out of a narrow sidestreet onto a perpendicular road.
Wide-angle mode also incorporates an object detection
function for objects moving relative to the vehicle. Therefore
when the vehicle is stationary, only moving objects and people are detected, while when driving forwards or reversing,
it is also possible to detect static Jambobjects. These are
shown in a bar display below the object.

A new feature in the S-Class is the 360° camera, an assistance system consisting of four digital cameras that the
driver can use for checking around when parking and maneuvering, and when driving out of driveways. The 360° camera
will be available from about the 4th quarter of 2013.
The cameras are located in the radiator grille, in each of the
outside mirror housings and in the handle strip of the trunk
lid. In addition to the original image data captured by the cameras, the 360° camera control unit also computes an artificial image (“virtual viewpoint”). The Audio/COMAND display
shows the driver the vehicle and its surroundings (3 m to the
front and rear, and 2.5 m sideways measured at ground level)
in the form of a top-down (bird's eye) view.
The “top-down” view also displays any open doors and an
open trunk lid. The area covered by the corresponding camera, however, is obscured in the relevant view. When the
outside mirror housings are folded in, the areas to the sides
of the vehicle can no longer be scanned. In this case, these
zones are also hidden in the Audio/COMAND display.
The camera optics, with a horizontal viewing angle of approx.
180° and a vertical range of approx. 123°, produce views
that cannot be seen in same way from inside the vehicle.
Dynamic and static guide lines representing the vehicle's
dimensions and trajectory (path) on the basis of the steering
angle are projected on the image.
The driver can choose between the following views of his
surroundings:

The camera is active during forward travel up to a speed of v
= 30 km/h, above which it is automatically deactivated. The
function must be reactivated by the driver, and if the speed
is v > 30 km/h, a message appears in the head unit and the
camera is only reactivated when the speed drops back below
this threshold. When reversing, the 360° viewing system is
always active regardless of speed, as long as the relevant setting is activated in the COMAND Online unit.

360° camera
The 360° camera system can be activated and deactivated
manually by pressing the “360° camera” button in the driverside instrument panel button group, by pressing the appropriate softkeys or the Favorites button on the Audio/COMAND
control panel. Alternatively, the system can be activated
automatically by engaging the gear range “R”. For this, the
setting “activated at R” must be set via the head unit system
settings.
In order to ensure that the surroundings are captured even
in darkness, the ambient illumination in each outside mirror
housing is activated relative to the ambient brightness.
The lenses of the front 360° camera and rear 360° camera
are protected against dirts by camera covers. The flaps operate in the same way as those of the reversing camera.
The system automatically switches between rearward and
forward views according to the gear range selected. In addition to automatic selection, the driver can also choose between the different views manually via the COMAND Online
controller unit.
The background illumination of the Audio/COMAND display
can be manually adjusted to suit the ambient brightness. The
background illumination is set via the COMAND Online controller unit in the function bar of the “360° camera” system
menu by selecting the “sun” symbol.

Night View Assist Plus
In model series 222 the previous version of Night View Assist
has been expanded to include the following functions:
• Pedestrian detection in the range up to 160 m in front of
the vehicle
• Detection of animals (e.g. deer, cattle, horses) in the
range up to 100 m in front of the vehicle
• Clear, color highlighting of detected pedestrians and
animals
• Automatic display of the Night View image in the instrument cluster when objects are detected (Pop-Up Mode)
• Spotlight function for flashing pedestrians in dark
surroundings
Pedestrians or animals in the area in front of the vehicle are
detected in darkness and highlighted. Under good conditions,
pedestrians in front can be identified at ranges of up to s =
160 m; animals are detected, depending on their size, at ranges of up to s = 100 m.
Depending on the equipment installed, the right or left
headlamp can be made to focus its light cone on the object
(“spotlight”) so that the driver has the opportunity to prepare
for the situation accordingly in good time.
Night View Assist Plus provides images of the area in front
both in daylight and in the dark. In darkness, Night View
Assist Plus reveals obstacles in the driver's field of view before they can be seen in the light cone of the conventional
headlamps.
The area in front is scanned by two cameras. Night View
Assist Plus infrared camera 1 is installed at the top of the
windshield; Night View Assist Plus infrared camera 2 (thermal
imaging camera) is installed on the right behind the radiator
grille.
In Night Mode, when the remaining light is inadequate for optimum image acquisition, additional infrared lamps are activated. As infrared light is invisible to the human eye, oncoming
traffic is not dazzled.
The detection range of the two cameras is comparable to the
range of visibility when the high beams are on. The image
data is conditioned by the Night View Assist control unit and
displayed for the driver in the instrument cluster.

Night View Assist Plus can be activated as follows:
• For automatic image display (Pop-Up Mode), it is activated via the Assistance menu in the instrument cluster.
• When automatic image display is active, the image appears automatically on unlit roads whenever pedestrians
are detected within the range of infrared camera 1, or
pedestrians or animals are identified within the range of
infrared camera 2 (thermal imaging camera). When there
are no longer any objects or people in the relevant detection range, the image is hidden again. Pedestrian/animal
detection remains active.
• Manual activation (Classic Mode) is performed with the
Night View Assist button.
When Night View Assist Plus is activated manually, the image
is displayed until deactivated by another press of the Night
View Assist button. If automatic image display is active, the
Night View Assist button can be pressed to force an image to
be displayed in the instrument cluster even when there are
no objects in the detection range, i.e. manual activation is
prioritized.

If Night View Assist Plus is switched on in daylight or at twilight with adequate light remaining, the area in front of the
car is scanned by infrared camera 1 without activating the
infrared light. The rain/light sensor evaluates the ambient
brightness. In Classic Mode the image is displayed via the
instrument cluster even in daylight, but it is not possible to
identify pedestrians or animals by day.
When the rain/light sensor detects that the ambient brightness is too low as twilight darkens (night detection), the left
and right infrared lamps are activated at speeds above v = 10
km/h. The area in front of the vehicle is then illuminated with
infrared light. As infrared light is invisible to the human eye,
oncoming traffic is not dazzled. In Night Mode, pedestrians
and animals can be detected.

Pedestrian and animal detection
Night View Assist Plus is designed to be able to distinguish
pedestrians or animals from moving objects such as vehicles
and stationary objects such as streetlights.
At night, infrared camera 1 provides information on whether
there are any pedestrians in the detection range in addition
to the image data of the area in front. Animals are not identified by infrared camera 1.
Infrared camera 2 (thermal imaging camera) operates with an
extended wavelength spectrum and can recognize pedestrians and animals in the detection range.
When Night View Assist Plus identifies pedestrians or animals
on or beside the road, these are highlighted in the instrument
cluster display.
Spotlight
When pedestrians or animals are identified on or beside the
road, the headlamp light cone (the right light cone in vehicles
for left-hand traffic; the left light cone in vehicles for righthand traffic) of the appropriate front lamp unit is aimed in the
direction of the pedestrian or animal detected. Pedestrians
are flashed a warning several times; identified animals are
not flashed because their reaction to pulsed light beams is
unpredictable.
If more than one pedestrian is detected, the warning is flashed to the one that the system considers to be in the most
critical position in the current driving situation. This allows
the driver to prepare for the situation (e.g. pedestrian on the
road) in advance.
The spotlight function is only permitted outside built-up areas
and on unlit roads, and it activated only when the headlamp
light cone cannot dazzle the vehicle in front or the oncoming
traffic.
The spotlight function is suppressed if the multifunction
camera registers a large number of static light sources (e.g.
streetlamps identifying a built-up area) and individual dynamic light sources (vehicles).

Two versions of climate control can be selected in the new
S-Class:
• THERMOTRONIC automatic air conditioning with 2-zone
temperature control (without A/C at the rear)

Front climate control operating unit
The front climate control operating unit is located in the
cockpit below the center air outlets. The adjustment options
for air distribution at the front can only be performed via
the Audio/COMAND control panel and are displayed in the
Audio/COMAND display.
The climate control is operated via the Audio/COMAND control panel, via the front climate control operating unit or via
the rear climate control operating unit.
The system is controlled and regulated by the climate control
control unit, which is located on the front of the climate control housing on the passenger side.

of the center console between the front seats. The operating
unit is used to set the functions for climate control in the rear
passenger compartment.
The air conditioning in the rear compartment can also be
operated from the front via the climate control operating unit

possible to operate the rear air conditioning via the rear climate control operating unit.

Rain/light sensor
In this model series the function of the humidity/temperature
sensor is for the first time integrated in the rain/light sensor.
The familiar functions of the rain/light sensor have been expanded to include a “measurement of relative humidity and
temperature at the windshield” function for determining the
dew point temperature. This allows any possible fogging of
the windshield to be prevented in model series 222.
Sun sensor
In addition to the sun sensor at the front of the cockpit, another sun sensor is installed on the rear shelf in model series
222. The sun sensors measure the angle of incidence and
the intensity of sunlight. The interior temperature and the blower output are adjusted according to the measured values.
This provides a reasonable temperature difference between
the target temperatures on the left and right sides.
A/C shutoff in the event of a crash (Impact X signal)
To prevent harmful gases from entering the vehicle interior
after an accident, the climate control control unit initiates the
following actions:
• The blower motors stop so that no air is circulated in the
interior.
• The fresh air/recirculation flap is set to the recirculation
position. Outside air can no longer enter the vehicle
interior.
• On refrigerant compressors without magnetic clutch, the
regulating valve is switched off. The refrigerant compressor stops circulating the refrigerant.
• On refrigerant compressors with magnetic clutch, the magnetic clutch is opened so that the refrigerant compressor is no longer being driven.
• The electric refrigerant compressor is no longer energized
(S 400 HYBRID).
Pollutant sensor-controlled air recirculation
The multifunction sensor at the air inlet of the air conditioner
housing registers the following environmental influences:
• Carbon monoxide (CO)
• Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
• Exterior dew point temperature
• Relative humidity
The multifunction sensor transmits the values over climate
control LIN 2 to the climate control control unit. Above a
certain pollutant concentration, the air recirculation flap is
automatically set to the recirculation position and the supply
of outside air is prevented. Pollutant-controlled air recirculation mode is not indicated by the LED in the air recirculation
button.

Perfume atomizer system
The perfume atomizer is a component of the AIR-BALANCE
Package; it consists of the perfume atomizer generator with a
glass vial with function head and is located on the left in the
glove box.
The fan in the perfume atomizer generator produces a filtered
air stream from the area behind the glove box. This air stream
is directed through the function head of the glass vial and
enriched there with perfume molecules. The enriched air is
carried by a hose line to an opening in the diffuser grille in
front of the COMAND display and released from there into
the vehicle interior.
The perfume atomizer system is pulsed, i.e. once it has
been switched on, it runs for five minutes and then switches
itself off for five minutes, etc. This intermittent switching is
intended to prevent the nose from becoming habituated to
the fragrance. The ability to appreciated the perfume is not
impaired.
The Audio/COMAND control panel can be used to switch
the perfume atomizer system on and off, and to adjust its
intensity in three stages. The intensity control increases or
reduces the air volume per unit of time.

Filtration
In order to produce a high air quality in the vehicle interior,
the air conditioning system of the S-Class features a fine
dust activated charcoal filter as standard. This ensures that
any particles, such as fine and coarse dust, soot and pollen,
are filtered out of the intake air before it reaches the interior
compartment.
In conjunction with the AIR-BALANCE Package, a filter is installed with even more efficient pollutant and oder reduction
than the standard-equipment fine dust activated charcoal filter. This further improves the air quality in the vehicle interior
compared to the standard filter.
Ionization
The ionization system is also a component of the AIRBALANCE Package (code P21). This has an ionizer integrated
in the air duct of the driver-side air outlet to improve the air
quality. Actuated over the LIN bus of the climate control control unit, it ionizes the air in the duct.
Ionized oxygen molecules can neutralize certain organisms
and pollutants in the air and produce a perceptibly higher
quality of air.

The new S-Class is equipped with COMAND Online as standard. The COMAND Online controller unit is the central
control unit for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle. Audio output comes from ten
speakers with Frontbass. The standard equipment includes a
Digital Owner's Manual for COMAND Online.
Emergency call system and emergency call/assistance
system
The Mercedes-Benz emergency call system is standard
equipment (in specific countries). The emergency call system enables a manual or automatic emergency call to be
made. It requires a mobile phone or a telephone module with

The technology for the Media Interface is housed in the head
unit and no longer in a separate control unit as it was in the
predecessor model. The terminal units are linked via the existing USB interfaces in the stowage compartment of the center console. The antennas for the COM module are located
on the left and right at the rear of the vehicle in the vent flaps
(as with the PASS control unit in the USA).
Tuner unit
The individual control units for the TV tuner, DAB and SDARS
are combined into a tuner unit depending on the equipment
installed. The advantage of this is that there is only one installation location for all the control units in the vehicle.
SDARS is standard in the USA.
Live Traffic Information
The new S-Class features Live Traffic Information as standard. This service allows up-to-date and highly accurate
traffic information to be received. Users of Live Traffic
Information also function as traffic reporters. The COM module installed in the vehicle transmits anonymous information
about the current traffic situation in the immediate vicinity of
the vehicle to a central master system. This then calculates
the overall traffic situation in real time.

The Navitainment system provides better and more up-todate route information for the passengers and the driver. It

form of a 3D flight to the destination.
Drive Show displays a slideshow to the passengers (with a

The rear mobile phone system in the new S-Class can be
used in a variety of ways.

controller unit. The mobile phone is charged via the rear mobile phone contact plate.
The secretary function makes it possible to transfer existing
calls between the two rows of seats. It also incorporates a
hands-free function in the rear compartment so that the rear
passenger can e.g. view and edit current e-mails while a call
is in progress.
Rear handset
The handset in the rear can be used as a classic telephone,
but also as a remote control and as a keypad for the Rear
Seat Entertainment system. The user interface for the remote
control appears in the touchscreen. The remote control can

The bodyshell of the new S-Class is manufactured in a
composite structure of steel, aluminum and plastic hybrid
components.
Substructure
The substructure in the area of the rear suspension strut
mounting consoles is made of cast aluminum because of the
weight benefits.
Repairs to the aluminum structures employ the familiar repair
methods of adhesive bonding and riveting. MIG welding is
also used in the area of the front end.
The stricter crash requirements at the rear end on account
of the high-voltage battery in hybrid vehicles are satisfied by
various installation solutions and longitudinal members made
of ultra high strength steels.
Integral carrier
The weight-optimized integral carrier consists of a combination of extruded, cast and sheet aluminum parts. It is attached to the bodyshell at six points.
Front end with firewall
Compared to the steel construction of the predecessor model series, the use of aluminum in the front end provides a
weight saving of approx. 14 kg. Aluminum struts are installed
between the shock-absorber strut mounting consoles and the
crossmember. The crossmember itself is split, with the center
section made of cast aluminum.
A sheet steel structure is used in the area of the firewall.
The use of ultra high strength materials has ensured that the
weight could be reduced compared to that of the predecessor model series.
The front end and firewall form a steel/aluminum hybrid
interface. Semi-tubular punch rivets and structural adhesive
have been used in order to produce a strong connection that
is resistant to corrosion. In addition, the components of the
double longitudinal member plane have been pretreated with
cathodic immersion painting.

The mountings of the 12 V batteries are made of plastic in
the new S-Class.
Side wall
The one-piece side wall paneling is made of steel. The paneling contains a reinforcing frame made principally of hot-formed high strength sheet metal. This prevents the reinforcing
frame from penetrating too deeply into the interior in the
event of a crash.
Roof
For the first time the new S-Class is fitted with a full aluminum roof that is bonded to the body. This provides a significant advantage in terms of weight and produces a lower
center of gravity.
In contrast to previous roof repair methods, adhesive bonding
is now used exclusively on the new S-Class.
Rear center section
The rear center section that connects the two side walls and
terminates the rear end is made of aluminum as in the predecessor model.

Engine hood and front fenders
The hood and front fenders are made of aluminum for reasons of weight. In order to meet the legal requirements for
pedestrian protection with regard to the deformation behavior of the hood, the inner section is made with an appropriate dished structure.
Doors
All four doors have a one-piece aluminum sheet inner part
with paneling 1.0 mm thick extending from the lower edge
to the roof frame. Side impact protection is provided by two
struts in each door with a multiple-chamber profile of high
strength aluminum.
Front end
The front end consists of an extruded aluminum box section.
It carries the front bumper and a three-piece structure made
of GMTex® (fiber composite component) for the headlamps
and the radiator. The front end is bolted to the forward front
end longitudinal members with plug-in extruded aluminum
parts and is fastened to the upper longitudinal member
plane.
Corrosion protection and paintwork
Long-term corrosion protection of the lightweight body is
provided by the galvanizing of the body panels and the use of
corrosion-resistant aluminum alloys.
A new door module is used in the S-Class. The basic carrier
is made of long-fiber reinforced polypropylene. The plastic
blend and the specially adapted injection molding process
produce a plastic carrier that satisfies the strict safety requirements of side-on crash tests.
These measures are supplemented by cathodic immersion
painting and automated seam sealing for all critical areas.
Structural zones that are highly susceptible to corrosion are
additionally subjected to fully automated cavity preservation
with wax.
Rear wall
The rear wall in the new S-Class is for the first time designed as an assembly component in order to accommodate
the different seat variants. It is an aluminum/plastic hybrid
component.
The new S-Class is finished with a scratch-resistant clearcoat
system.

High-voltage safety precautions when working on the
vehicle
In the event of an accident, the high-voltage battery is shut
down and the entire high-voltage on-board electrical system
is discharged in two stages:
Triggering of emergency tensioning retractors, stage 1:
• This shutoff function can be reversed by switching the
ignition on or off.
Triggering of emergency tensioning retractors, stage 2:
• This shutoff function can only be reversed by trained
personnel.
Power disconnect
Before repair work, after an accident, or to enable service
operations to be conducted without the risk of electric shock,
a power disconnect of the high-voltage on-board electrical
system must be performed using the Xentry Diagnostics diagnostic system. Unauthorized reactivation of the high-voltage
on-board electrical system is prevented by fitting a commercially available padlock to the high-voltage disconnect device.

High-voltage safety devices in the vehicle
Interlock circuit:
The purpose of the interlock circuit is to protect people
against accidental contact with live voltage-carrying parts. A
12 V/88 Hz interlock signal is looped through all the removable or openable components of the high-voltage system.
For this purpose, each high-voltage plug connection contains
a contact bridge that interrupts the interlock circuit when the
high-voltage plug connection is separated.
In addition, the interlock circuit is routed in series via the 12
V control unit plug connections of the high-voltage components. When a control unit plug connection is unplugged, the
interlock circuit is broken via the interlock input and output
contacts. Interruption of the interlock circuit opens the contactors in the high-voltage battery module and powers down
the entire high-voltage system, involving in particular the shutoff and discharge of the power electronics control unit.
Galvanic separation:
• The high-voltage on-board electrical system is insulated
from both the vehicle body and the 12 V on-board electrical system.
Equipotential bonding:
• All the housings of the high-voltage components are
grounded to the body ground via separate equipotential
bonding lines.
• The shielding of the high-voltage lines is also routed to
the body ground.
Monitoring of insulation resistance:
• Insulation faults are detected in the entire high-voltage
on-board electrical system.
• Faults are displayed in the instrument cluster.
Protection against the dangers of electrical current:
• High-voltage components are protected against direct
contact
• Color coding (orange cables) of components carrying
high voltages during operation.
• Warning notices on high-voltage components.

The high-voltage on-board electrical system is shut down in
the event of an accident by the triggering of the pyrotechnical
separator, which is actuated by the supplemental restraint
system control unit when a crash is detected:
• Disconnection of power sources and storage devices at
all terminals
• Deactivation of generator operation (both the electric machine and the DC/DC converter)
• Discharge of the intermediate circuit capacitors to below
the dangerous voltage range
Shutoff of the high-voltage on-board electrical system in the
event of short circuit:
• Shutoff in stages in event of short circuit via software and
fuse
Active discharge:
• Protection from residual voltage through discharge of
intermediate circuit capacitors to below the dangerous
voltage range
