Safety Instructions
When using electrical appliances basic safety precautions should be followed, including the following:

To reduce the risk of burns, electric shock, fire, injury to persons, or exposure to excessive microwave energy:
PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID POSSIBLE EXPOSURE
TO EXCESSIVE MICROWAVE ENERGY
(a) Do Not Attempt to operate this oven with the door
open, since open-door operation can result in harmful
exposure to microwave energy. It is important not to
defeat or tamper with the safety interlocks.
( b) Do Not Place any object between the oven front
face and the door or allow soil or cleaner residue
to accumulate on sealing surfaces.
(c) Do Not Operate the oven if it is damaged. It is
particularly important that the oven door close
properly and that there is no damage to the:
(1) door (bent),
(2) hinges and latches (broken or loosened),
(3) door seals and sealing surfaces.
(d) The Oven Should Not be adjusted or repaired by
anyone except properly qualified service personnel.
Read and follow the specific precautions in the Precautions
to Avoid Possible Exposure to Excessive Microwave Energy
section above.

This appliance must be grounded. Connect only
to a properly grounded outlet. See the Grounding
Instructions section on page 6.
Install or locate this appliance only in accordance
with the provided installation instructions.
This microwave oven is UL listed for installation over
electric and gas ranges.
Troubleshooting Tips
This microwave oven is not approved or tested
for marine use.
This over-the-range oven is designed for use over ranges
no wider than 36.″ It may be installed over both gas and
electric cooking equipment.
Do not operate this appliance if it has a damaged power
cord or plug, if it is not working properly, or if it has been
damaged or dropped. If the power cord is damaged,
it must be replaced by General Electric Service or an
authorized service agent using a power cord available
from General Electric.
To reduce the risk of fire in the oven cavity:
— Do not overcook food. Carefully attend appliance when
paper, plastic or other combustible materials are placed
inside the oven while cooking.
— Remove wire twist-ties and metal handles from paper
or plastic containers before placing them in the oven.
— Do not use the oven for storage purposes. Do not leave
paper products, cooking utensils or food in the oven
when not in use.
— Do not pop popcorn in your microwave oven unless in
a special microwave popcorn accessory or unless you
use popcorn labeled for use in microwave ovens.
— If materials inside the oven ignite, keep the oven door
closed, turn the oven off and disconnect the power cord,
or shut off power at the fuse or circuit breaker panel.
If the door is opened, the fire may spread.
— Do not use the Sensor Features twice in succession
on the same food portion. If food is undercooked after
the first countdown, use Cook Time for additional
cooking time.
Do not cover or block any openings on the appliance.

Use this appliance only for its intended use as described
in this manual. Do not use corrosive chemicals or vapors
in this appliance. This microwave oven is specifically
designed to heat, dry or cook food, and is not intended
for laboratory or industrial use.

Do not clean with metal scouring pads. Pieces can burn off
the pad and touch electrical parts involving risk of electric
shock.
Do not store any materials, other than our recommended
accessories, in this oven when not in use.
Do not store this appliance outdoors. Do not use this
product near water—for example, in a wet basement,
near a swimming pool, near a sink or in similar locations.
Keep power cord away from heated surfaces.
Some products such as whole eggs and sealed
containers—for example, closed jars—are able to explode
and should not be heated in this microwave oven.
Such use of the microwave oven could result in injury.
It is important to keep the area clean where the door
seals against the microwave. Use only mild, non-abrasive
detergents applied with a clean sponge or soft cloth.
Rinse well.
This appliance must only be serviced by qualified service
personnel. Contact nearest authorized service facility
for examination, repair or adjustment.
As with any appliance, close supervision is necessary when
used by children.
Do not store anything directly on top of the microwave
oven surface when the microwave oven is in operation.
Do not mount this appliance over a sink.
Operating Instructions
Thermometer—Do not use regular cooking or oven
thermometers when cooking by microwave. The metal
and mercury in these thermometers could cause
arcing and possible damage to the oven. Do not use
a thermometer in food you are microwaving unless
the thermometer is designed or recommended
for use in the microwave oven.

If you see arcing, press the Clear/Off pad and correct the problem.
Arcing is the microwave term for sparks in the oven.
Arcing is caused by:
Foil not molded to food (upturned edges act
like antennas).
Metal, such as twist-ties, poultry pins
or gold-rimmed dishes, in the microwave.
Metal or foil touching the side of the oven.
Recycled paper towels containing small metal
pieces being used in the microwave.
Turntable ring support not installed correctly.
Troubleshooting Tips
The metal rack not installed correctly so it touches
the microwave wall.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS.
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING.
Do not boil eggs in a microwave oven. Pressure will
build up inside egg yolk and will cause it to burst,
possibly resulting in injury.
Operating the microwave with no food inside for
more than a minute or two may cause damage
to the oven and could start a fire. It increases the
heat around the magnetron and can shorten
the life of the oven.
Care and Cleaning
Foods with unbroken outer “skin” such as potatoes,
hot dogs, sausages, tomatoes, apples, chicken livers
and other giblets, and egg yolks should be pierced
to allow steam to escape during cooking.
Superheated water
Liquids, such as water, coffee, or tea, are able to
be overheated beyond the boiling point without
appearing to be boiling. Visible bubbling or boiling
when the container is removed from the microwave
oven is not always present. This could result in very
hot liquids suddenly boiling over when the container
is disturbed or a spoon or other utensil is inserted
into the liquid.
Troubleshooting Tips
To reduce the risk of injury to persons:
— Do not overheat the liquid.
— Stir the liquid both before and halfway through
heating it.
Foods cooked in liquids (such as pasta) may tend
to boil more rapidly than foods containing less
moisture. Should this occur, refer to the Care
and cleaning of the oven section for instructions
on how to clean the inside of the oven.
Avoid heating baby food in glass jars, even with
the lid off. Make sure all infant food is thoroughly
cooked. Stir food to distribute the heat evenly.
Be careful to prevent scalding when warming
formula. The container may feel cooler than
the formula really is. Always test the formula
before feeding the baby.
Don’t defrost frozen beverages in narrow-necked
bottles (especially carbonated beverages). Even
if the container is opened, pressure can build up.
This can cause the container to burst, possibly
resulting in injury.
Hot foods and steam can cause burns. Be careful
when opening any containers of hot food, including
popcorn bags, cooking pouches and boxes. To
prevent possible injury, direct steam away from
hands and face.
Do not overcook potatoes. They could dehydrate
and catch fire, causing damage to your oven.
Cook meat and poultry thoroughly—meat to
at least an INTERNAL temperature of 160°F
and poultry to at least an INTERNAL temperature
of 180°F. Cooking to these temperatures usually
protects against foodborne illness.
— Do not use straight-sided containers with narrow
necks.
— After heating, allow the container to stand in the
microwave oven for a short time before removing
the container.

— Use extreme care when inserting a spoon or other
utensil into the container.

either in or next to the dish. Microwave 30–45
seconds at high. If the dish heats, it should
not be used for microwaving.
If the dish remains cool and only the water in
the cup heats, then the dish is microwave-safe.
Sometimes the oven floor, turntable and walls
can become too hot to touch. Be careful touching
the floor, turntable and walls during and after
cooking.
If you use a meat thermometer while microwaving,
make sure it is safe for use in microwave ovens.
Some styrofoam trays (like those that meat
is packaged on) have a thin strip of metal
embedded in the bottom. When microwaved,
the metal can burn the floor of the oven or
ignite a paper towel.
Use of the rack accessory:
Paper towels, waxed paper and plastic wrap can
be used to cover dishes in order to retain moisture
and prevent spattering while microwaving. Be sure
to vent plastic wrap so steam can escape.
Cookware may become hot because of heat
transferred from the heated food. Pot holders
may be needed to handle the cookware.
When microwaving “boilable” cooking pouches
and tightly closed plastic bags, they should be slit,
pierced or vented as directed by package. If they
are not, plastic could burst during or immediately
after cooking, possibly resulting in injury. Also,
plastic storage containers should be at least
partially uncovered because they form a tight seal.
When cooking with containers tightly covered with
plastic wrap, remove covering carefully and direct
steam away from hands and face.
Use foil only as directed in this manual. When using
foil in the microwave oven, keep the foil at least 1″
away from the sides of the oven.
Troubleshooting Tips
Do not use recycled paper products. Recycled
paper towels, napkins and waxed paper can
contain metal flecks which may cause arcing
or ignite. Paper products containing nylon or nylon
filaments should be avoided, as they may also
ignite.
Not all plastic wrap is suitable for use in microwave
ovens. Check the package for proper use.
Plastic cookware—Plastic cookware designed for
microwave cooking is very useful, but should be
used carefully. Even microwave-safe plastic may
not be as tolerant of overcooking conditions as
are glass or ceramic materials and may soften or
char if subjected to short periods of overcooking.
In longer exposures to overcooking, the food
and cookware could ignite.
— Use pot holders when handling the rack and
cookware. They may be hot.
— Be sure that the rack is positioned properly inside
the oven to prevent product damage.

with metal foil. This will cause overheating of
the microwave oven.

they increase the risk of electric shock and could

Do not use your microwave oven to dry
newspapers.
Operating Instructions
Do not operate the oven in the microwave mode without the turntable and the turntable support seated
and in place. The turntable must be unrestricted so it can rotate.
Make sure all cookware used in your microwave oven is suitable for microwaving. Most glass
casseroles, cooking dishes, measuring cups, custard cups, pottery or china dinnerware which
does not have metallic trim or glaze with a metallic sheen can be used. Some cookware is labeled
“suitable for microwaving.”

grounded. In the event of
an electrical short circuit,
grounding reduces the risk

providing an escape wire
for the electric current.
This appliance is equipped with a power cord
having a grounding wire with a grounding plug.
The plug must be plugged into an outlet that is
properly installed and grounded.
Do not under any circumstances cut or remove
the third (ground) prong from the power cord.
Do not use an adapter plug with this appliance.
Do not use an extension cord with this appliance.
If the power cord is too short, have a qualified
electrician or service technician install an outlet
near the appliance.
For best operation, plug this appliance into its
own electrical circuit to prevent flickering of lights,
blowing of fuse or tripping of circuit breaker.
Care and Cleaning
Consult a qualified electrician or service technician
if the grounding instructions are not completely
understood, or if doubt exists as to whether the
appliance is properly grounded.
If the outlet is a standard 2-prong wall outlet,
it is your personal responsibility and obligation
to have it replaced with a properly grounded
3-prong wall outlet.
THE VENT FAN
Troubleshooting Tips
The fan will operate automatically under certain
conditions (see Vent Fan section). Take care to
prevent the starting and spreading of accidental
cooking fires while the vent fan is in use.
Clean the underside of the microwave often.
Do not allow grease to build up on the microwave
or the fan filters.
Consumer Support
In the event of a grease fire on the surface units
below the microwave oven, smother a flaming
pan on the surface unit by covering the pan
completely with a lid, a cookie sheet or a flat tray.
Use care when cleaning the vent fan filters.
Corrosive cleaning agents, such as lye-based
oven cleaners, may damage the filters.
When preparing flaming foods under
the microwave oven, turn the fan on.
Never leave surface units beneath your microwave
oven unattended at high heat settings. Boilovers
cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may
ignite and spread if the microwave vent fan is
operating. To minimize automatic fan operation,
use adequate sized cookware and use high heat
on surface units only when necessary.

Light. Touch this pad to turn the light on high,
low or off.
Cook. Touch this pad to cook baked potatoes,
vegetable casseroles, rice and frozen entrées.
The oven’s sensor will tell the oven how long
to cook depending on the amount of humidity
coming from the food.
Vent Speed. Touch this pad to choose one
of 5 fan speeds.
Reheat. Touch this pad to reheat pizza, dinner
plates, soup/sauce and casseroles. The oven’s
sensor will tell the oven how long to cook
depending on the amount of humidity
coming from the food.
Popcorn. Touch this pad when popping popcorn
in your microwave oven. The oven’s sensor will
tell the oven how long to cook depending on the
amount of humidity it detects from the popcorn.
Add 30 Seconds. Touch this pad to add
30 more seconds to the cooking time.
Clock. Touch this pad to enter the time of day.
Time Cook. Touch this pad to set
a cooking time.
More. Touch this pad to add ten seconds
of cooking time each time you press it.
Vent On/Off. Touch this pad to turn the fan
on/off.
Turntable. Touch this pad to turn on and off
the turntable.
Less. Touch this pad to subtract ten seconds
of cooking time each time you press it.
Power Level. Touch this pad to select
a cooking power level.
Display. The display includes a clock and
indicators to tell you time of day, cooking time
setting and cooking functions selected.
Timer. Touch this pad to set the timer.
Settings. Touch this pad to change the oven’s
default setting for sound, clock, display speed
and defrost weight.
Hold Warm. Touch this pad to keep hot, cooked
foods warm in your microwave oven for up to
90 minutes.
Quick Defrost. Touch this pad to provide quick
defrost for 1.0 pound of frozen food.
Time Defrost. Touch this pad to defrost most
other frozen foods.
Auto Defrost. Touch this pad to select food type
and defrost food (meat, poultry, fish and bread)
by weight.
Melt. Touch this pad to melt butter/margarine,
chocolate, cheese and marshmallows.

If you open the door after the oven begins to
cook, touch Start/Enter again.
Number Pads. Touch number pads to enter
cooking time, power level, quantities or weights.

You can use your microwave oven as a timer.
Use the Timer for timing up to 99 minutes,
and 99 seconds.

Enter the time by using the number pads.
Touch Start/Enter. When the time is over,
you will hear beeps and END will display.
Vent Fan
The fan moves steam and other vapors from
the cooking surface. There are five speeds.
Example (setting Level 4):

Touch Vent On/Off. This shows the last
level until you select the fan speed level.

Touch Vent Speed until LEVEL 4 appears
in the display.
Consumer Support
Touch Vent On/Off to turn off the fan when
desired.
Light
Touch Light once for bright light, twice
for night light or three times to turn
the light off.

NOTE: If the temperature from the range
or cooktop below the microwave oven gets
too hot, the exhaust fan in the vent hood
will automatically turn on at the LEVEL 4
setting to protect the oven.
It may stay on up to an hour to cool the oven.
When this occurs, the Vent On/Off pad will
not turn the fan off.
Child Lock
You may lock the control panel to prevent
the microwave oven from being accidentally
started or used by children.
The Child Lock feature is also useful when
cleaning the control panel. Child Lock
prevents accidental programming when
wiping the control panel.
Operating Instructions
To set Child Lock:

Touch Clear/Off.

Touch and hold Start/Enter more
than 4 seconds. LOCKED will appear in
the display window and two beeps will
sound.
To cancel Child Lock:

Touch and hold Start/Enter more than
4 seconds. LOCKED will disappear and two
beeps will sound.
Hold Warm
You can keep cooked food warm in your
microwave oven for up to 90 minutes. You
can use Hold Warm by itself or to follow
a cooking cycle automatically.

What happens when using the Sensor Features:
The Sensor Features detect the increasing humidity released during cooking. The oven
automatically adjusts the cooking time to various types and amounts of food.
Do not use the Sensor Features twice in succession on the same food portion—it may result in
severely overcooked or burnt food. If food is undercooked after the countdown, use Time Cook
for additional cooking time.
Operating Instructions
NOTE: Sensor features will not operate when the oven is hot. If one of the sensor cooking
pads is touched when the temperature inside the oven is greater than 200°F, “OVEN TOO
HOT FOR SENSOR COOKING---USING ALTERNATE METHOD” will be displayed. The oven will
automatically change to cook by time (follow the directions in the display) or once the oven
is cool enough, the sensor features will function normally.
The proper containers and covers are essential for best sensor cooking.
Covered
Always use microwave-safe containers and cover them with lids or vented plastic wrap.
Never use tight sealing plastic containers—they can prevent steam from escaping and
cause food to overcook.
Be sure the outside of the cooking containers and the inside of the microwave oven
are dry before placing food in the oven. Beads of moisture turning into steam can mislead
the sensor.

be entered is the net weight in pounds and
tenths of pounds (the weight of the food
minus the container).
Use Auto Defrost only for raw food. Auto
Defrost gives best results when food to
be thawed is a minimum of 0°F (taken
directly from a true freezer). If food has
been stored in a refrigerator-freezer that
does not maintain a temperature of 5°F
or below, always program a lower food
weight (for a shorter defrosting time)
to prevent cooking the food.
If the food is stored outside the freezer
for up to 20 minutes, enter a lower food
weight.
The shape of the package alters the
defrosting time. Shallow rectangular
packets defrost more quickly than
a deep block.
Separate pieces as they begin to defrost.
Separated pieces defrost more easily.
You can use small pieces of aluminum foil
to shield foods like chicken wings, leg tips
and fish tails, but the foil must not touch
the side of the oven. Foil causes arcing,
which can damage the oven lining.
Shield areas of food with small pieces
of foil if they start to become warm.
For better results, a preset standing time
is included in the defrosting time.
For best results, elevate food to be
defrosted on a microwave-safe roasting
rack. This prevents the possibility of warm
meat juices cooking food during defrost.

Utility dishes, loaf dishes, pie plates, cake plates,
liquid measuring cups, casseroles and bowls
without metallic trim.
METAL UTENSILS:
Metal shields the food from microwave energy and produces uneven
cooking. Also avoid metal skewers, thermometers or foil trays. Metal
utensils can cause arcing, which can damage your microwave oven.
PAPER:
Paper towels, waxed paper, paper napkins
and paper plates with no metallic trim or
design. Look for the manufacturer’s label
for use in the microwave oven.
ALUMINUM FOIL:
Avoid large sheets of aluminum foil because they hinder cooking
and may cause harmful arcing. Use small pieces of foil to shield
poultry legs and wings. Keep ALL aluminum foil at least 1 inch
from the side walls and door of the oven.
WOOD:
Wooden bowls and boards will dry out and may split or crack
when you use them in the microwave oven. Baskets react
in the same way.
TIGHTLY COVERED UTENSILS:
Be sure to leave openings for steam to escape from covered utensils.
Pierce plastic pouches of vegetables or other food items before
cooking. Tightly closed pouches could explode.
BROWN PAPER:
Avoid using brown paper bags.
They absorb too much heat and could burn.
FLAWED OR CHIPPED UTENSILS:
Any utensil that is cracked, flawed or chipped may break
in the oven.

METAL TWIST TIES:
Remove metal twist ties from plastic or paper bags.
They become hot and could cause a fire.

PLASTIC:
Plastic wrap (as a cover)—lay the plastic
wrap loosely over the dish and press it
to the sides. Vent plastic wrap by turning
back one edge slightly to allow excess steam
to escape. The dish should be deep enough
so that the plastic wrap will not touch
the food. As the food heats, it may melt
the plastic wrap wherever the wrap touches
the food. Use plastic dishes, cups, semirigid
freezer containers and plastic bags only
for short cooking times. Use these with care
because the plastic may soften from the heat
of the food.
METAL DECORATION:
Metal-trimmed or metal-banded dinnerware, casserole dishes, etc.
The metal trim interferes with normal cooking and may damage
the oven.

Getting the Best Cooking Results
To get the best results from your microwave oven,
read and follow the guidelines below:
Storage Temperature: Foods taken from the freezer
or refrigerator take longer to cook than the same foods
at room temperature.
The time for recipes in this book is based on the normal
storage temperature of the food.
Size: Small pieces of food cook faster than large ones, pieces
similar in size and shape cook more evenly. For even
cooking, reduce the power when cooking large pieces
of food.
Natural Moisture: Very moist foods cook more evenly
because microwave energy is attracted to water
molecules.
Stir foods such as casseroles and vegetables from the
outside to the center to distribute the heat evenly and
speed cooking. Constant stirring is not necessary.
Place delicate areas of foods, such as asparagus tips, toward
the center of the dish.
Arrange unevenly shaped foods, such as chicken pieces
or salmon steaks, with the thicker, meatier parts toward
the outside of the dish.
Shield, with small pieces of aluminum foil, parts of food
that may cook quickly, such as wing tips and leg ends
of poultry.
Let It Stand: After you remove the food from the microwave,
cover food with foil or casserole lid and let it stand to finish
cooking in the center and avoid overcooking the outer
edges. The length of standing time depends
on the density and surface area of the food.
Wrapping in waxed paper or paper towel:
Sandwiches and many other foods containing prebaked
bread should be wrapped prior to microwaving to prevent
drying out.
Turn over foods like pork chops, baking potatoes, roasts
or whole cauliflower halfway through the cooking time
to expose all sides equally to microwave energy.

The metal filters trap grease released by

For this reason, the filters must always be

Definition
Arcing
Arcing is the microwave term for sparks in the oven. Arcing is caused by:
the metal rack being installed incorrectly and touching the microwave walls.
metal or foil touching the side of the oven.
foil that is not molded to food (upturned edges act like antennas).
metal such as twist-ties, poultry pins, gold-rimmed dishes.
recycled paper towels containing small metal pieces.
the turntable ring support being installed incorrectly.
Covering
Covers hold in moisture, allow for more even heating and reduce cooking time. Venting plastic wrap or
covering with wax paper allows excess steam to escape.
Shielding
In a regular oven, you shield chicken breasts or baked foods to prevent over-browning. When microwaving,
you use small strips of foil to shield thin parts, such as the tips of wings and legs on poultry, which would
cook before larger parts.
Standing Time When you cook with regular ovens, foods such as roasts or cakes are allowed to stand to finish cooking
or to set. Standing time is especially important in microwave cooking. Note that a microwaved cake is not
placed on a cooling rack.

During this five-year limited warranty, you will be responsible for any labor or in-home
service costs.

What GE Will Not Cover:
Replacement of house fuses or resetting of circuit
breakers.
Improper installation, delivery or maintenance.
Damage to the product caused by accident, fire, floods
or acts of God.
Failure of the product or damage to the product if it is
abused, misused (for example, cavity arcing from wire
rack or metal/foil), or used for other than the intended
purpose or used commercially.
Incidental or consequential damage caused by possible
defects with this appliance.
Damage caused after delivery.
Replacement of the cooktop light bulbs.
This warranty is extended to the original purchaser and any succeeding owner for products purchased
for home use within the USA. If the product is located in an area where service by a GE Authorized Servicer
is not available, you may be responsible for a trip charge or you may be required to bring the product to
an Authorized GE Service Location for service. In Alaska, the warranty excludes the service calls to your home.
Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages. This warranty
gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. To know
what your legal rights are, consult your local or state consumer affairs office or your state’s Attorney General.

EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES—Your sole and exclusive remedy is product repair as provided
in this Limited Warranty. Any implied warranties, including the implied warranties of merchantability
or fitness for a particular purpose, are limited to one year or the shortest period allowed by law.
