Hardware produced by the local blacksmiths at their forge and anvil was common to many
early American homes. Our blacksmiths take great pride in authentically reproducing these pieces,
one by one, using 18th century tools and techniques. This hardware is carefully built to ensure
that it will function, as designed, for many years to come.

PERIOD LIGHTING N
Lighting is a most important aspect of 18th century decor. Our copper and tinsmiths recreate,
by hand, a very comprehensive selection of candle and electrified fixtures which are historically
correct for restorations of the period. Using only traditional materials such as tin, copper and
brass, the metals are left with a natural finish which will darken slightly with time.

Brass and porcelain designs of the 18th and early 19th centuries created a more formal decor as
compared with the hand-forged iron of the village blacksmiths. Typically executed as a sand
casting, the manufacture of this hardware required more complicated means for its production.
Our selection of brass door and cabinet hardware was made only after careful research into the
numerous methods used in making brass hardware today. Meticulous attention to detail and
historically accurate appearance are the major criteria.

A collection of iron hardware which offers the design and function of our hand-forged iron at a
more economical price. These pieces are the result of machine-forging and therefore do not show
the hammer marks and natural, forged finish of the hand-wrought hardware. Our machine-forged

Smonuffolk
style thumblatches ( A-D) were in comuse throughout all of the colonies during the
18th and early 19th centuries. The “Bean Latch”
(A) was the first and most popular design.
Originally made by English blacksmiths and
imported here, the American smiths soon began
producing these and many other designs. The
cusp and handle styles eventually became as
numerous as the craftsmen who made them and
we are pleased to offer a selection of four
popular designs.

The Norfolk latch shows the first influence of the Industrial
Revolution on door latch manufacturing. In the interest of mass
production, the back plates were made on a strip shear. Our
interior Norfolk latch set combines a hand-forged handle with
back plate and is furnished complete with a special standard
trim set with knob or a reverse bevel trim set. (Please specify door

Closet, cellar or storm doors require the
thumblatch handle on the side that pulls
out to open. The Reverse Bevel Trim Set
includes a special latch bar, staple
and catch, for use with any thumblatch.
Offset latch bars are often used for doors
not hung flush with the casing. Our
standard would be for a 3⁄4” thick casing,
but we can tailor it to fit any thickness

Interior Door Pulls
These interior Suffolk and Norfolk door
pulls are made to complement our thumblatch sets. They are for use on all types of
interior doors that don’t require a latch.
This is a complete latch set designed
specifically for pantry or closet doors.
It consists of a “coiled rat-tail” latch bar
with a screw mounted staple and drive catch.
The latch bar has a prong that protrudes
through a slot in the door so, as an emergency
release it can be opened from the inside.

to grasp the handle easily, even with a
gloved hand. These are complete sets that

Hadlyme Entrance Thumblatch Set
Inspiration for this generous latch came from an
original, which was forged by a well-known
blacksmith in Hadlyme, CT., circa 1810. One of
our blacksmiths re-created this design in both a
traditional (black) finish and a whitesmithing
version. For a substantial entryway this latch is
historically appropriate and indicative of early
work that would have been commissioned for
a large home. The latch comes with an extra
large latch bar, screw mount staple and footed
drive catch. (Please specify door thickness and

Norfolk Entrance
Thumblatch Set
The Norfolk thumblatch style was a design
that was easily adapted to large- scale
production. By the 1830’s, these were
manufactured in factories by the thousands.
There is, however, plenty of evidence that
the earliest Norfolk latches were completely
hand-wrought, just as the entrance set
offered here. A lift knob on the latch bar
generally characterizes Norfolk trim sets.

Dutch Door Quadrant
Two piece Dutch doors were most common
in eastern Pennsylvania and New York State.
Quadrants were designed to hold the two
door halves in alignment and to allow the
quick separation of the top half from the
bottom when desired. They are also
popular on stable doors.

Strap hinges are the sturdiest of period styles and can range in lengths from 8” to 48” and
larger. Usually spanning 1⁄2 to 2⁄3 of a doors’ width, our strap hinges reflect the best
characteristics of craftsmanship and design from the 18th century. The surface of each
hinge is fully worked and deep beveling is painstakingly hammered into each edge.

Pintle Styles
We hand-forge 3 pintle styles to work with any jamb detail. 18th
century door framing usually provided a hardwood post into
which a drive pintle would be mounted. These pintles can be used
with modern framing as well. We also make the (I) “Jamb
Mounted” and (J) “Plate Mounted” pintles, which the installer
may find more workable for certain applications. The pin sizes are
1⁄2” dia. for 30” and 24” straps, 3⁄8” dia. for 18” and 12” straps.

soldiers hired by the British. So impressed by their

HAND-FORGED IRON

The hearth and fireplace were the center of family life for most early American
homes. A carefully tended wood fire created heat to warm the house and
prepare meals. The practice of cooking on a hearth was basic to 18th
and early 19th century America. Family members could gather and
assist as the food was prepared with ingenious techniques utilizing
fireplace tools and hearth cooking utensils of the period.
We at Historic Housefitters are pleased to make available replicas
of some of these appliances and utensils and invite you to give
hearth cooking a try. Preparing your food in this way requires
“active participation” and, while not for the faint of heart, the
techniques and fresh herbs produce flavors which are superb.
Tinned Reflector Oven
Here’s an exact reproduction of an 18th century reflector
oven or “tin kitchen,” which is ideal for roasting meat or
fowl. The curved design and brightly tinned surface reflect
the fire’s heat around the food. Entrees prepared with this
oven will give you the true flavor of authentic roasting!
Comes complete with a hand-forged spit and 3 skewers which
allow for timely rotation of the roast for even cooking. The oven’s
rounded bottom acts as a drip pan and the door on the back provides
for basting and testing as cooking progresses. 20” H x 20” W x 12” D.

cannot begin to duplicate the succulent roasts
resulting from open-fire cooking.
A “spider” is a long handled frying pan
with 3 legs. It was used extensively around
the fire to catch drippings from roasting
meats and to sauté vegetables. The long
handle provided some space between the
fire and cook.

Cast Iron Cookery
Skewers & Holder
In practicing the art of hearth cooking, cast
iron dutch ovens play a major role. Dutch
ovens are extremely versatile and much
quicker to use than a brick beehive oven for
baking rolls, bread, pies, meats and vegetables. These are placed on a bed of coals and
with their flanged lids securely in place,
can be covered with more coals as needed.
Cooking times are much the same as for
modern ovens.
Another example of a very common utensil
used in open fire cooking, skewers were
used to position meat or fowl on a spit.
The holder was typically hung near
the fireplace keeping the skewers in
easy reach. The set comes with
6 skewers; 6” to 8” in length.

The broad, flat blade and long handle of an 18th century peel was
perfectly suited to the task of
cooking in a beehive oven. Coals

The actual uses for cooking trivets appear to
have been twofold. Some were designed to
create a resting place to insulate hot cookery
from wooden surfaces. Those with shorter
legs were likely used over coals for cooking.

metals we favor for outdoor lighting. These pieces are not polished or lacquered but
do receive a mild “antique” finish which chemically “ages” the metal. Once exposed to
weather, natural aging takes over.
When selecting a lantern remember that the piece will be outdoors, and should
therefore be large enough to appear correct from a distance away.

Early redware was used in a variety of ways in 18th century New
England homes. Made from clay that was commonly found near
riverbanks, the local potter produced an amazing selection of plates,
pitchers, bowls, candlesticks and teapots to name a few!
The majority of these items were glazed, making them impervious to
moisture. Redware can be used to store and serve food and will easily
withstand temperature necessary for baking. Potters would sometimes
decorate their pieces with a white clay slip before glazing with simple line
and dot designs.

was one of casting to produce plates,
cups, mugs and a wide assortment of
other house wares.

In the 18th century pewter was produced as
a substitute for sterling silver and in widespread
use as a more affordable alternative for setting the dinner
table.
The pewterware we offer is completely safe to use (it contains no lead), but unlike much of the reproduction pewter
available today it has the soft patina and texture of the
originals. We feel it is an essential element of period décor.
