Multiple serial ports for external
devices
Each board is designed for control of multiple
external serial devices. Multiport serial boards
are commonly used to control devices for
applications such as industrial automation,
building automation, and CNC machine
control.
Various types of external
connector
MOXA offers different external connector
types on its multiport serial boards, including
DB9, DB25 and RJ45. Adapters are also
available, so any serial device (modems,
terminals, etc.) can be connected to a
computer.

Why MOXA Multiport Seria
Boards?
Flexibility. With MOXA boards, users can
begin with a small-range system of 8 ports
and later expand to 128 ports, depending
on business growth. In addition, users can
choose the type of control board (PCI or ISA),
connection module (rackmount or desktop), and
serial interface (RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485).
Any combination of these options can be used
in one system.
Speed. MOXA has developed a proprietary
chip that is integrated with a dedicated
processor, allowing full duplex transmission
speeds up to 921 Kbps across all ports
simultaneously. This is four times faster than
the speed available using standard UART
technology.
Reliability. Not only do MOXA boards
provide host systems with high speed serial
transmission and reduced CPU loads, they are
also extremely reliable. With long MTBF (Mean
Time Before Failure) values, users are assured
of many years of uninterrupted service.
Efficiency. Many MOXA multiport
serial boards include 128-byte FIFOs,
which is more than the standard 16550
UART provides. Experience has shown
that 128 bytes is sufficient to prevent
data from getting backed up at the serial
controller level, while still conserving CPU
resources.

There are physical limits to the number of port
connectors that can fit on a multiport serial
board,. However, by connecting an octopus
cable and rackmount external box, many
more serial ports can be added.

What Is Direction Control?
RS-485 is often used to create a simple network
consisting of two or more nodes. If more than
two nodes transmit at the same time, data from
the two transmissions could collide. For this
reason, RS-485 devices need to control the
direction of data transmission.
MOXA's PComm Utility is a professional
development tool for serial communication
that runs under Windows 2000, XP, 2003,
NT, 95, 98, and ME. The software package
includes useful utilities such as Diagnostic,
Monitor, Terminal Emulator, Data Scope,
and Performance Analyzer; a powerful
serial communication library for easy
programming in most popular languages;
and comprehensive online documentation with
illustrative example programs.
Use the serial communication library to develop
a system for data communication, remote
access, data acquisition, or industrial control
for Windows environments. PComm offers a
simpler and easier solution than the Windows
Win32 COMM API.

Five useful utilities are available to help
you quickly debug and troubleshoot
serial communication problems. PComm
Diagnostic, PComm Monitor, and Terminal
Emulator are available on the Multiport Serial
Board CD-ROM, while Data Scope and
Performance Analyzer can be downloaded
from the MOXA website.

on or off for data transmission. A longer time makes data collisions

PComm Diagnostic performs internal and external
testing of hardware processes, including IRQ,
TxD/RxD, UART, CTS/RTS, DTR/DSR, DTR/DCD, and
more. This utility is designed for use with MOXA
boards only.

A typical Point of Sale (POS) application is
a PC-based checkout system, which may
include bar-code scanners, credit card readers,

A major U.S. airline company recently needed to
update and streamline their flight display system.
This required many serial devices, such as luggage
sticker printers, boarding pass readers, and flight
display boards, to be connected to one computer
on the network. The high-volume, time-sensitive
nature of airline operations required a rugged,

Solution
The airline company selected MOXA’s CP-118U,
incorporating more than 10,000 units into their
flight scheduling system. The CP-118U greatly

MOXA's CP-134U-I V2 and CP-132UL-I
V2 multiport serial boards can installed in
a PC, allowing supervision of a building’s
air conditioning control system, elevator
controllers, entrance controllers, and fire
alarm systems. With the boards installed, the
building’s devices can all be managed from
one PC, and a custom application can be
developed as necessary to coordinate between

In effect, with a single PC and a multiport serial

2000V optical isolation protection system is also
