The new Volvo FH puts more power at your disposal. This means you can maintain a higher average
speed, obtain better hill-climbing ability and get more work done in less time. The responsive, flexible
new 13-litre engine delivers 60% of maximum torque within one second of starting up. This massive
urge combined with a perfectly matched powertrain means minimum gear changing and exceptional
driveability in all conditions. On downhill gradients, the powerful new Volvo Engine Brake with its up
to 300 kW of braking power is a great asset. The market’s most powerful engine brakes has become
even more powerful.

The Volvo FH is pleasantly light to manoeuvre and offers better directional stability than before. A newly
developed pusher axle helps minimise tyre wear. With our tyre pressure monitoring system, sensors at
each wheel work together with the on-board main computer to constantly monitor inflation pressure in
the truck and trailer tyres. The result is higher safety and better fuel economy.

Whether you prioritise weight or volume, the Volvo FH has the capacity to meet your requirements. For
example, we’ve extended our range of low chassis so you can load more by loading higher. If you want
to increase both weight and volume, our single drive wheel configuration is a useful alternative. You can
increase your load by about 100 kg thanks to the weight saving, compared with the conventional dual
wheel format.
To make loading and unloading easier we have developed a new ergonomic control box for manual
height regulation on trucks with air suspension. For added convenience, the system can be pre-programmed with the most frequently used heights.

VOLVO I-Shift for more users
Volvo I-Shift is an automatic gear changing system
that combines the robustness of the manual gearbox with the convenience of automatic transmission. Above all else, however, I-Shift contributes
to low fuel consumption and superior driveability.
The new version of I-Shift considerably extends
its operational area. Irrespective of whether
you drive on good or poor roads, carry light or
heavy loads, I-Shift is available in a version that
is designed for your needs. It can handle gross
combination weights in excess of 60 tonnes (130
tonnes in special applications). You can use a power
take-off and obtain up to 300 Nm while on the
move. What is more, retarder performance has
been considerably enhanced over previous levels.
Volvo I-Shift is available for different types of
application. Choose between Basic, Distribution
& Construction, Long Haul Fuel & Economy and
Heavy Duty. Ask your dealer for more information

NEW VERSION OF POWERTRONIC
For truly heavy construction duties in tough operating conditions, we recommend the new version
of our robust automatic transmission, Powertronic.
It is designed to handle the high levels of torque
delivered by the 520 bhp Volvo D13A engine and
has a new torque converter that gives you faster
throttle response and thus better starting traction
and gradient-climbing ability.
Internal losses have been minimised, which has
a positive effect on fuel consumption. Powertronic
changes gear without any interruption in power
delivery, which in turn promotes excellent get-youthere ability on even the poorest surfaces.

WE BID THE VOLVO D12 a fond farewell and express our thanks for an excellent job over the years. It’s
time now to extend a warm welcome to its replacement, the Volvo D13A. The Volvo FH has received
a new, larger heart that beats strongly for profitable haulage. Replacing one of the most successful
ever truck engines was no easy decision, but after just over a decade we felt the time was right. The
new engine beats its predecessor in every respect. The Volvo D13A is more powerful, lighter, cleaner,
quieter and more economical. But above all it offers fantastic response right from the start.
FROM 400 TO 520 BHP
The Volvo D13A is an in-line, six-cylinder, electronically controlled 12.8-litre diesel engine with an overhead camshaft and unit injectors. It is available with a choice of four power outputs – 400, 440, 480
with 520 bhp – and in variants conforming to Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 (incentive).
2500 NM OF TORQUE
The Volvo D13A delivers high levels of torque across most of the rev range. Just touch the accelerator
pedal and you’ll have massive power at your disposal. Maximum torque runs from 2000 to 2500 Nm,
depending on engine variant.

900 NM FROM THE POWER TAKE-OFF
The timing mechanism of the Volvo D13A is at the rear of the engine, which means it is possible to
extract far greater power for the power take-off – up to 900 Nm when idling and 650 Nm while on the
move.
INDIVIDUAL SERVICE PROGRAMME FOR MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY
In order to ensure maximum availability from your truck, your Volvo dealer can schedule an individual
service programme based on driving conditions and application. This means optimum maintenance,
and various measures can be synchronised to reduce the number of workshop visits. For example, a
44-tonne truck in long-haul operations only needs an oil change every 100,000 km or 12 months.
In order to minimise the time spent in the workshop, we have also further developed our fault-tracing
and diagnostics systems.

FULFILS EURO 4 REQUIREMENTS AND MEETS EURO 5
The Volvo FH is certified
according to the new Euro
4 European emissions
regulations. In order to reduce particulate emissions
to the stipulated levels, we
carried out a number of changes to our combustion technology, while after-treatment of exhaust
gases reduced nitrogen oxide emissions too. The
system that Volvo and most other producers have
chosen is called Selective Catalytic Reduction,
SCR. The technology involves injecting a mix of
urea and water, a blend called AdBlue, into the
engine’s exhaust fumes and converting nitrogen
oxide into harmless nitrogen gas and steam.
The truck’s diagnostics system ensures that the
exhaust emissions really do meet the legislated
levels.
If you want already today to meet the Euro 5
requirements that come into effect in 2009, we
will be happy to supply you with a special version
of the Volvo D13A.

MORE POWER FROM EACH DROP OF FUEL
Even though it is almost one litre larger in terms of
displacement, the Volvo D13A uses less fuel than
its predecessor did. For operators choosing the
Euro 3 variant, this is a straight saving. For the
Euro 4 and Euro 5 variants, this means that the
cost of the AdBlue you use is compensated by
reduced diesel fuel consumption. In practice, you
gain higher torque and power output without

CLEANER EXHAUST GASES. Over the past 10 years,
exhaust emissions from heavy trucks have decreased
considerably. The step from Euro 3 to Euro 4 means that
emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides will be cut
by 80% and 30% respectively. With Euro 5, emissions of
nitrogen oxides will drop still further.

By optimising fuel injection, sound levels during

VEB with even higher power
Our VEB (Volvo Engine Brake) system is now available with
up to 300 kW of braking power. This means both higher
safety and lower wheel brake wear. If you often drive on
very hilly roads, the Volvo Compact Retarder is a suitable
alternative.
ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED DISC BRAKES
The Volvo FH is equipped with the latest generation of electronically
controlled disc brakes featuring a range of comfort- and safety-enhancing functions. Among these features are “Hill Start Aid” – which
prevents the truck from rolling backwards during a hill start – a facility
for engaging the differential lock at low speeds, and continuous
monitoring of brake pad condition and brake disc temperature.
ELECTRONIC STABILISATION
ESP (Electronic Stability Program) significantly reduces the risk of
driving off the road on tight bends or during fast avoidance manoeuvres and skids. It also reduces the risk of jack-knifing when driving
a tractor/semi-trailer rig. The brake system is automatically activated
if the truck behaves abnormally. Each wheel is braked individually to
stabilise the truck and power to the driven wheels is reduced. ESP
also features an advanced anti-spin system. Available for 4x2, 6x2
and 6x4 tractors.
LESS WEAR WITH BRAKE BLENDING
When Brake Blending is activated, the wheel brakes, engine brake
and retarder can be activated just by pressing the brake pedal.
When the brake pedal is pressed the wheel brakes are first activated,
then the auxiliary brakes are activated and take over, in order to
reduce wear on brake discs and brake pads.
PARKING BRAKE REMINDER
Alerts you if you forget to apply the parking brake after you switch off
the ignition or open a door.
New generation of ACC
A new generation of ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) is now
available that also integrates the wheel brakes. The system
continuously monitors the distance to the vehicle ahead
using radar. In normal driving, speed is continuously adjusted using the cruise control and auxiliary brakes so that you
always maintain a safe distance. If the gap decreases too
much, the system issues an audible warning and the wheel
brakes are applied.
UNDER-RUN PROTECTION
The Volvo FH has an integrated front under-run protection system
(FUPS), which adds no extra weight. You can also specify integrated
side under-run protection (SUP) and rear under-run protection (RUP).
WORLD-CLASS COLLISION SAFETY
The Volvo FH meets an extremely high injury-prevention safety standard. It has been put through the world’s strictest safety tests and
features standard equipment such as a three-point seatbelt with belt
tensioner, a deformable steering wheel, energy-absorbing interior
trim materials, injury-preventing pedals and fire-resistant textiles. A
driver’s airbag is available as an option. The seat belts are now also
available in red, for those who really want the belts to be seen.
PERSONAL SAFETY
The Volvo Anti-Theft System gives you complete protection against
break-ins, theft and attacks. The system includes a break-in alarm,
anti-theft protection connected to the truck’s electronic starter
inhibitor, and a security alarm. The Volvo Anti-Theft System meets
the insurance companies’ toughest demands on security systems.
Several functions are available as options or accessories, such as the
Volvo Immobilizer (starter inhibitor). A smoke detector and protection
net by the bed are other examples of onboard equipment that further
raise safety levels.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCE. The Volvo Trucks Accident Research
Team, formed in 1969, gives us access to a unique database
containing more than 30 years of data from accidents involving Volvo trucks. It forms a valuable foundation on which to
build the world’s safest trucks.

Volvo’s patented towing member concept has been further
developed for the new Volvo FH. It gives you even greater
flexibility and more choice of installation along both the length
and height of the member. Most of our towing members
can be fitted at intervals of 25 mm.
CORRECT OVERHANG
With a chassis of the right length straight from the factory,
you avoid unnecessary work and get a rear overhang that
is exactly configured to the bodywork. The rear overhang
can be specified at length intervals of 50 mm.
SIMPLER MANOEUVRING WITH STEERED TAG AXLES
The electro-hydraulic steered tag axle makes for more convenient manoeuvring while at the same time reducing tyre
wear. Perfect for narrow streets or vulnerable surfaces.
SIMPLE BODYBUILDING FOR RIGID TRUCKS
Pre-routed wiring, electrical and electronic connections,
specially designed hole patterns and detailed bodybuilding
instructions on the Internet mean the bodybuilding process

The front suspension of the disc brake-equipped Volvo FH
is entirely maintenance-free. Axles with maintenance-free
unit bearings and lubrication-free propshaft universal joints
are other examples of details that reduce service requirements.

NEW FIFTH-WHEEL MOUNTING FOR HEAVY LOADS
A new fifth-wheel mounting certified for a kingpin load of

Air suspension with height control and the option of preprogrammed loading and unloading heights. The latest
generation of air-suspended axles has added adjustment
range for height selection while driving, a height-control
function for the front axle and the possibility of adjusting

the battery box fitted in the rear overhang. This frees space

Volvo Trucks Online Services encompasses a variety of Internet-based services and smart features that
assist you in your daily work and help boost your profits. You can get help with everything from planning
your truck purchases and buying parts to scheduling maintenance and monitoring your operating costs.
A few examples: Dynafleet Online gives you reports on fuel consumption, distances covered, driver hours,
environmental impact and lots more. Volvo Truck Finder helps you find used trucks for sale throughout
Europe. Show Vehicle Specifications shows the specifications of your truck. Find Dealer contains a list

VOLVO ACTION SERVICE
Volvo’s own emergency response organisation is at your service
24 hours a day, every day of the year. If your truck breaks
down, one single phone call is all that’s needed to ensure
that we get it back on the road again as quickly as possible.
We’ll rebook ferries and hotels and do everything else that’s
needed.

CABS
Day cab. For daytime journeys.
Sleeper cab. Excellent overnight accommodation for one person.
Globetrotter. A cab designed for long-haul
operations with comfortable overnight accommodation for two people. Interior height
is 193 cm (176 cm on the engine compartment cover).
Globetrotter XL. Our most exclusive cab
has full standing height and is available with
two comfortable beds and generous storage
space. Interior standing height: 210 cm (193
cm on the engine compartment cover).

Power take-off
A wide range of gearbox-driven and engine-driven power take-offs is available for the Volvo
FH with or without directly installed hydraulic
pumps. The Volvo D13A has its timing
mechanism at the rear of the engine and is
factory-prepared for an engine-driven, clutchindependent power take-off with flange mounting (DIN) and a connecting flange for a hydraulic pump. Max power 650 Nm on the
move and 900 Nm while at a standstill. It is
possible to set a range of conditions for power
take-off operation, such as activated parking
brake, engine rev range, engine rev restriction, torque restriction, gearbox in neutral/low
splitter, emergency stop and remote start.

2 225 Ah batteries, 80 or 100 A alternator.
Brakes
The latest generation of Volvo’s electronically
controlled disc brakes (EBS) with a range of
safety- and comfort-enhancing features. Available in a choice of three alternatives. The most
extensive package includes the electronic
stabilisation program (ESP) which is available
for 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 tractors.
