With single drive wheels, the weight of your rig drops by about 100 kg compared with a conventional dual wheel conﬁguration (4x2 tractor). 15 VOLVO I-Shift for more users Volvo I-Shift is an automatic gear changing system that combines the robustness of the manual gearbox with the convenience of automatic transmission. Above all else, however, I-Shift contributes to low fuel consumption and superior driveability. The new version of I-Shift considerably extends its operational area. Irrespective of whether you drive on good or poor roads, carry light or heavy loads, I-Shift is available in a version that is designed for your needs. It can handle gross combination weights in excess of 60 tonnes (130 tonnes in special applications). You can use a power take-off and obtain up to 300 Nm while on the move. What is more, retarder performance has been considerably enhanced over previous levels. Volvo I-Shift is available for different types of application. It’s time now to extend a warm welcome to its replacement, the Volvo D13A. The Volvo FH has received a new, larger heart that beats strongly for proﬁtable haulage. Replacing one of the most successful ever truck engines was no easy decision, but after just over a decade we felt the time was right. The new engine beats its predecessor in every respect. The Volvo D13A is more powerful, lighter, cleaner, quieter and more economical. But above all it offers fantastic response right from the start. FROM 400 TO 520 BHP The Volvo D13A is an in-line, six-cylinder, electronically controlled 12.8-litre diesel engine with an overhead camshaft and unit injectors. It is available with a choice of four power outputs – 400, 440, 480 with 520 bhp – and in variants conforming to Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 (incentive). 2500 NM OF TORQUE The Volvo D13A delivers high levels of torque across most of the rev range. Just touch the accelerator pedal and you’ll have massive power at your disposal. Maximum torque runs from 2000 to 2500 Nm, depending on engine variant. 20 900 NM FROM THE POWER TAKE-OFF The timing mechanism of the Volvo D13A is at the rear of the engine, which means it is possible to extract far greater power for the power take-off – up to 900 Nm when idling and 650 Nm while on the move. INDIVIDUAL SERVICE PROGRAMME FOR MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY In order to ensure maximum availability from your truck, your Volvo dealer can schedule an individual service programme based on driving conditions and application. This means optimum maintenance, and various measures can be synchronised to reduce the number of workshop visits. For example, a 44-tonne truck in long-haul operations only needs an oil change every 100,000 km or 12 months. In order to minimise the time spent in the workshop, we have also further developed our fault-tracing and diagnostics systems. 21 FULFILS EURO 4 REQUIREMENTS AND MEETS EURO 5 The Volvo FH is certiﬁed according to the new Euro 4 European emissions regulations. In order to reduce particulate emissions to the stipulated levels, we carried out a number of changes to our combustion technology, while after-treatment of exhaust gases reduced nitrogen oxide emissions too. The system that Volvo and most other producers have chosen is called Selective Catalytic Reduction, SCR. The technology involves injecting a mix of urea and water, a blend called AdBlue, into the engine’s exhaust fumes and converting nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen gas and steam. The truck’s diagnostics system ensures that the exhaust emissions really do meet the legislated levels. If you want already today to meet the Euro 5 requirements that come into effect in 2009, we will be happy to supply you with a special version of the Volvo D13A. 22 MORE POWER FROM EACH DROP OF FUEL Even though it is almost one litre larger in terms of displacement, the Volvo D13A uses less fuel than its predecessor did. For operators choosing the Euro 3 variant, this is a straight saving. For the Euro 4 and Euro 5 variants, this means that the cost of the AdBlue you use is compensated by reduced diesel fuel consumption. Over the past 10 years, exhaust emissions from heavy trucks have decreased considerably. The step from Euro 3 to Euro 4 means that emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides will be cut by 80% and 30% respectively. With Euro 5, emissions of nitrogen oxides will drop still further. QUIETER IDLING The Volvo D13A is quieter than its predecessor. By optimising fuel injection, sound levels during idling have been cut by as much as 2 dB(A). This means both higher safety and lower wheel brake wear. If you often drive on very hilly roads, the Volvo Compact Retarder is a suitable alternative. ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED DISC BRAKES The Volvo FH is equipped with the latest generation of electronically controlled disc brakes featuring a range of comfort- and safety-enhancing functions. Among these features are “Hill Start Aid” – which prevents the truck from rolling backwards during a hill start – a facility for engaging the differential lock at low speeds, and continuous monitoring of brake pad condition and brake disc temperature. ELECTRONIC STABILISATION ESP (Electronic Stability Program) signiﬁcantly reduces the risk of driving off the road on tight bends or during fast avoidance manoeuvres and skids. It also reduces the risk of jack-kniﬁng when driving a tractor/semi-trailer rig. The brake system is automatically activated if the truck behaves abnormally. Each wheel is braked individually to stabilise the truck and power to the driven wheels is reduced. ESP also features an advanced anti-spin system. Available for 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 tractors. LESS WEAR WITH BRAKE BLENDING When Brake Blending is activated, the wheel brakes, engine brake and retarder can be activated just by pressing the brake pedal. When the brake pedal is pressed the wheel brakes are ﬁrst activated, then the auxiliary brakes are activated and take over, in order to reduce wear on brake discs and brake pads. PARKING BRAKE REMINDER Alerts you if you forget to apply the parking brake after you switch off the ignition or open a door. New generation of ACC A new generation of ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) is now available that also integrates the wheel brakes. The system continuously monitors the distance to the vehicle ahead using radar. In normal driving, speed is continuously adjusted using the cruise control and auxiliary brakes so that you always maintain a safe distance. If the gap decreases too much, the system issues an audible warning and the wheel brakes are applied. UNDER-RUN PROTECTION The Volvo FH has an integrated front under-run protection system (FUPS), which adds no extra weight. You can also specify integrated side under-run protection (SUP) and rear under-run protection (RUP). WORLD-CLASS COLLISION SAFETY The Volvo FH meets an extremely high injury-prevention safety standard. It has been put through the world’s strictest safety tests and features standard equipment such as a three-point seatbelt with belt tensioner, a deformable steering wheel, energy-absorbing interior trim materials, injury-preventing pedals and ﬁre-resistant textiles. A driver’s airbag is available as an option. The seat belts are now also available in red, for those who really want the belts to be seen. PERSONAL SAFETY The Volvo Anti-Theft System gives you complete protection against break-ins, theft and attacks. The system includes a break-in alarm, anti-theft protection connected to the truck’s electronic starter inhibitor, and a security alarm.
