Standalone Media Converters
Connecting and powering small devices at the edge of a wired network
infrastructure becomes increasingly important to LANs/MANs as they add
WiFi access points, webcams, entry control systems, etc. Sometimes, the
most optimal location for one of these devices is not only out of reach of the
existing copper wiring, but also too far from an AC power source. Spending
a lot of money to rewire electric cabling isn’t the alternative, nor is moving
the location of the access point, or sacrificing it altogether. Deploying a
media converter supporting the Power Over Ethernet standard is the solution
for both extending the access point up to 40 Km from the central office
equipment as well as powering the end-device at the access point.

Supporting the IEEE 802.3af PoE standard, the new
standalone PoE-McBasic media converter offers
unparalleled installation flexibility and cost-savings.
Equipped with all the features— copper-to-fiber conversion,
troubleshooting capability, a small yet rugged design, and an
internal AC power supply— that have made the McBasic series
one of IMC Networks’ most popular brands for over six years, the
new 100 Mbps PSE-McBasic also includes the IEEE 802.3af Power
Over Ethernet (PoE) standard.
The Power Over Ethernet technology allows the media converter to be the Power Source Equipment (PSE) by distributing
an electrical current across existing copper data cabling. If the
connected unit requires power and is 802.3af compliant, the PSE
detects it and supplies power. LEDs on the PSE indicate the amount of
power being supplied to the “Powered Device” (PD) as well as if the PSE is
over temperature or over current or has an open circuit.
Also available is an Extreme Temperature model; the PSE-XT-McBasic has an operating
temperature of up to 65°C, perfect for installing in even the hottest of conditions.

Incorporating the PoE standard into the product design allows network administrators to install the
PSE-McBasic up to 100 meters from the access point while support of single-mode fiber allows
installation of the media converter up to 40 Km from a central office (CO) switch. For instance, the best
location for a WiFi access point may be on a utility pole outside or in the ceiling where there is no AC
outlet. The PSE-McBasic makes the connection between the CO switch, via single- or multi-mode fiber, and
the twisted pair access point while also providing
power to the WiFi device.
Using the PoE technology, the PSE-McBasic becomes the
Power Source Equipment for the WiFi access unit (the
Powered Device). This gives installers greater installation
flexibility since the access device no longer has to be in the
immediate proximity of an AC power source and/or UPS.
The Optical Ethernet Company
All converters in the PSE-McBasic series (PSE-McBasic
and PSE-XT-McBasic) provide a single conversion between
100 Mbps twisted pair and 100 Mbps multi-mode or single-mode fiber,
or single-strand fiber. Single-strand fiber technology allows two individual
channels to share one strand of fiber; Full-Duplex data travels on different
wavelengths— 1310 nm and 1550 nm— to effectively double fiber capacity.
The PSE-McBasic series includes troubleshooting features such as LinkLoss and FiberAlert that
make isolating fiber breaks easier should they occur. The PSE-McBasic series also features
AutoCross for crossover/pass-through twisted pair connections, and LEDs that assist in network
diagnostics and troubleshooting. Additionally, each converter includes an internal AC power
supply. This feature can significantly increase reliability over products that use bulky, external
AC/DC power transformers.
