Product Overview
Introduction
The 3Com Baseline Switch 2026 is versatile, easy-to-use, unmanaged switch.
It is ideal for users who want the high-speed performance of 10/100 switching
but do not need sophisticated management functions. The Switch is shipped
ready for use, and operational straight out of the box. No configuration is
necessary. Your 3Com Baseline Switch incorporates the latest in Green
technology to yield more than 20% power savings over the previous generation
products.

automatically negotiates with the attached
device to determine the correct speed and

To connect a device to the Baseline
10/100 Switch, use Category 5/6
unshielded or shielded (screened) 100
Ohm TP cable (or Category 3/4/5 cable for
a 10 Mbps connection). The maximum
length of cable for each connection is
100m (328ft). Connect one end of the
cable to an RJ-45 port on the Baseline
10/100 Switch, and the other end to the
appropriate RJ-45 port on the client or
uplink device.
Each port supports automatic MDI/MDI-X
detection and can be connected to either a
10BASE-T or a 100BASE-TX port.
10/100/1000 Mbps

Ports 25 and 26 of 3Com Baseline Switch
2026 are Gigabit RJ-45 ports. These
10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 ports support
automatic MDI/MDI-X operation, so you
can use either straight-through or
crossover cables for all network
connections to workstations or servers, or
to other switches or hubs.
Use Category 5/6 cables for 1000BASE-T
operation.

Network Design
The Switch provides high performance switched connections to 10
Mbps, 100 Mbps (and 1000Mbps on port 25 and 26) hubs, switches,
servers and workstations that need a dedicated switched link.

Installing The Switch

Positioning the Switch
The switch is suited for use in an internal wiring closet, a network
room, or telecommunications room, where it can be mounted in a
standard 19-inch equipment rack, or free-standing.

Ensure that the ventilation holes are not obstructed.
When deciding where to position the switch, ensure that:
z
Cabling is located away from:
1) Sources of electrical noise such as radios, transmitters and
broadband amplifiers.
2) Power lines and fluorescent lighting fixtures.
z
The switch is accessible and cables can be connected easily.
z
Water or moisture cannot enter the case of the switch.
z
Air flow is not restricted around the switch or through the vents in
the side of the switch. 3Com recommends that you provide a
minimum of 25 mm (1 in.) clearance.
z
Air temperature around the switch does not exceed 40 °C (104
°F).
If the switch is installed in a 19-inch rack or closed assembly its local
air temperature may be greater than room ambient temperature.
z
The air is as free from dust as possible.
z
The switch is situated away from sources of conductive
(electrical) dust, for example laser printers.
z
The unit is installed in a clean, air conditioned environment.

z
The AC supply used by the switch is separate to that used by
units that generate high levels of AC noise, for example air
conditioning units.
z
Do not place any object on a device when the device is
operating.
Rack Mounting
The Switch is 1U high and will fit in most standard 19-inch racks.
z
Disconnect all cables from the switch before continuing. Remove
all self adhesive pads from the underside of the switch if they
have been fitted.
z
If you use a shelf or support ensure that it will not obstruct the air
flow through the side panels of the switch.
To rack-mount the switch:
1) Place the switch the right way up on a hard flat surface, with the
front facing towards you.
2) Locate a securing bracket over the mounting holes on one side of
the front of the switch, as shown in Figure 2-1.
3) Insert the two screws and tighten with a suitable screwdriver.

You must use the screws supplied with the securing brackets.
Damage caused to the unit by using incorrect screws invalidates your
warranty.
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the other side of the switch.
5) Insert the switch into the 19-inch rack and secure with suitable
screws. Ensure that ventilation holes are not obstructed.
6) Reconnect network cables.
Powering On
The following sections describe how to get the switch powered-up
and ready for operation.
1) Check the network connections and cables.
2) Connect the power supply cable to the appropriate power socket
located on the rear panel of the unit.

3) Connect the plug to the power supply outlet socket and switch on
the power supply at the socket.

Problem Solving
At frequent intervals you should visually check the Switch. Regular
checks can give you an early warning of a possible failure; any
problems can then be attended to when there will be least effect on
users.
Check that all external cabling connections are secure and that no
cables are pulled taut.
Refer to the information about LEDs given earlier in this guide to see if
the problem can be identified and solved. Here are some common
problems that can occur:
Activity Status LED not lit for a port that has a connection
There is a problem with this connection. Check that:
1) The device being connected to is powered on and operating
correctly.
2) The cable is connected at both ends.
3) You are using a TP cable that is not damaged.
4) If the connection is to a workstation that the workstation’s network
interface card is installed and configured correctly.
All Activity LEDs appear to be lit continually
There may be broadcast storms on the network. Remove port
connections one at a time, waiting a few seconds between each port.
If the LEDs go off after removing a port connection, the device that
was connected to that port is introducing an excessive amount of
broadcast frames to the network (some pieces of network equipment
operate by sending out broadcast frames regularly).

If the problem persists and the unit still does not operate successfully,
contact your supplier with the following information before returning
the unit:
1) Product number and serial number (printed on a label supplied
with the unit).
2) A brief description of the fault condition.

Appendix A - Safety Information
Important Safety Information
Please read the following safety information carefully before
installing the Switch.
z
If installing the Switch unit in a stack with other Baseline units,
the Switch must be installed below the narrower Hub units.
z
The unit must be earthed (grounded).
z
Connect the unit to an earthed power supply to ensure
compliance with safety standards.
z
The appliance coupler (the connector to the unit and not the wall
plug) must have a configuration for mating with an
EN60320/IEC320 appliance inlet.
z
The socket outlet must be near to the unit and easily accessible.
You can only remove power from the unit by disconnecting the
power cord from the outlet.
z
This unit operates under SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage)
conditions according to IEC 60950-1. The conditions are only
maintained if the equipment to which it is connected also
operates under SELV conditions.
z
France and Peru only:
This unit cannot be powered from IT† supplies. If your supplies are of
IT type, this unit must be powered by 230V (2P+T) via an isolation
transformer ratio 1:1, with the secondary connection point labeled
Neutral, connected directly to earth (ground).
