PREFACE

This document is to be used by Field Engineers (FEs) when performing daily operational and maintenance tasks for which they are responsible on an IBX S/10, S/80, S/80+,TELARI and

Intecom E System(s). The document is organized in accordance with the approved outline established at the Home Office of Intecom. The scope of this manual reflects the type of

Installation, Test, Operations and Maintenance philosophy selected for this product.

This document describes the procedures for installing and maintaining the Programmable

Data Interface-1000S (PDI-1000S). There are numerous applications for the use of this piece of equipment, and the specifics of each usage is covered in the respective application document. INTRODUCTION

This manual contains general and technical hardware information for the Programmable Data

Interface-1000S (PDI-1000S) used with the Integrated Business Exchange (IBX) or

TELARI/Intecom E System. This information describes the PDI-1000S's specifications, installation, and maintenance procedures.

This manual is intended for use by Field Engineers and System Managers who have successfully completed the Intecom Training Department course covering IBX or

TELARI/Intecom E Operations and Maintenance.

The information contained in this manual is subject to change without notice.

2.0

GENERAL

The PDI-1000S is an ITE circuit switch interface device used for communication between the

IBX or TELARI/Intecom E and various applications with peripheral equipment.

This manual provides a description of the unit, specifications, installation, and maintenance information (including some troubleshooting procedures). Several illustrations are provided to show the physical appearance of the unit.

3.0

DESCRIPTION

The hardware description of the PDI-1000S, in this section, includes the characteristics, specifications, indicators, ports, and RS-232 type signals of the PDI-1000S. Refer to Figure 1 for a front and rear isometric views of the PDI-1000S.

3.1

Characteristics

The following are characteristics of the PDI-1000S:

Power Source -48 +/- 10VDC ITE Line Power

Power Consumption 2.0 Watts

Ambient Operating Temperature 32° to 104° F (0° to 40° C)

Storage Temperature 32° to 158° F (0° to 70° C)

Wire (24 AWG) between IM line card and PDI-1000S must not exceed 4000 ft.

Wire between the optional ITE and PDI-1000S must not exceed 25 ft.

Cable between Data Device and PDI-1000S (DB-25 Connector) must not exceed 25 ft.

3.2

Specifications

The PDI-1000S' dimensions are:

9.50 inches (24.13 cm) long

6.25 inches (15.875 cm) wide

1.50 inches (03.81 cm) high

2.5 lbs (1.13398 kg) weight.

Consult the appropriate applications document for the specific PDI-1000S part number.

Available part numbers include:

Part numbers for PDI-1000S as DCE:

520-1000-XXX (Desk Top)

520-1010-XXX (Rack Mounted)

Part numbers for PDI-1000S as DTE:

520-1100-XXX (Desk Top)

520-1110-XXX (Rack Mounted)

Other part numbers may be added as applications are added. Refer to the particular applications document to determine which PDI (DCE/DTE) will be required.

3.3

Indicators and Connectors

The PDI-1000S features include 3 Red LEDs and 1 Green LED, which are located on the front of the unit. See figure 2. The Red LEDs are STATUS, RX (receive), and TX (transmit).

The Green LED is labeled MODE. The STATUS and MODE indicators are under the control of the applications firmware. The TX and RX indicators reflect the state of the user peripheral interface on the DB-25 connector, inbound and outbound data interfaces (analogous to a modem).

The rear panel of the PDI-1000S contains a DB-25 applications interface connector, RJ-11 jack for connecting an ITE, and RJ-11 jack for connecting an IBX line.

Indicator Flash Rates

The flash rates for the PDI-1000S LEDs are explained on the following page. Refer to figure

2 for a front view of the PDI-1000S.

The flash rates for the green MODE LED are as follows:

Solid from power up through self test (diagnostic).

.5 second ON and .5 second OFF during idle mode of INITIALIZATION CODE.

.1 second ON and .1 second OFF during Loading of application program.

2.5 second ON and 2.5 second OFF during APPLICATION MODE (heart beat).

The flash rates for the red STATUS LED are as follows:

ON SOLID - indicates an error status if the Green MODE LED is not pulsing.

FLASHING - indicates inbound signals from MCU.

The PDI-1000S configured as either a DCE or DTE:

- The red TX LED flashing indicates signals are being transmitted from an external device (Inbound).

- The red RX LED flashing indicates signals are being received by an external device

(Outbound).

RS-232 Type Signals

The application data devices may be attached to the PDI-1000S using an RS-232 type cable.

The lead designations (see figure 3) for the RS-232 connector (DB-25) are as follows for a typical PDI-1000S application.

Data Communication Equipment (DCE) Configuration

The following is a typical DB-25 pin-out for a DCE configuration. The actual configuration is application dependent.

PDI-1000S Inputs/Outputs Direction

Pin 2 = Transmit Data (TXD)

Pin 3 = Receive Data (RXD)

Pin 4 = Request To Send (RTS)

Pin 5 = Clear To Send (CTS)

Pin 6 = Data Set Ready (DSR)

Data Terminal Equipment Configuration

The following is a typical DB-25 pin-out for a DTE configuration. The actual configuration is application dependent.

The previous information is valid for P/Ns 520-1000-XXX, 520-1010-XXX

(DCE), 520-1100-XXX and 520-1110-XXX (DTE) only. Use of these available signals is application dependent.

4.0

INSTALLATION

The PDI-1000S requires one circuit on an ITE line card. It can be installed on any IBX or

TELARI/Intecom E ITE port.

The following documents contain information about punching down cable and 66 blocks: For

TELARI , refer to the TELARI Installation and Maintenance Manual, Intecom part number

590-2260-00X. For Intecom E , refer to the Intecom E Installation and Maintenance Manual,

Intecom part number 590-2340-00X. For IBX, refer to Troubleshooting Interface Trunks,

Intecom part number 590-2048-00X.

PDI-1000S may be installed as desk-top, wall-mount, or frame-mount units. Refer to the following pages for the specific installation procedure.

Desk Top

Verify cabling between station jack (RJ11) and ITE Line Card.

Build the port in the database using the Man/Machine. Use the specific PDI-1000S

Applications Manual for building the desired configuration (i.e., MKO, Modem

Pooling, etc).

Place the PDI-1000S on top of the desk.

Connect the IBX LINE, 4-wire RJ-11 connector, to the line connector on the back of the PDI-1000S.

Connect a user interface cable to the DB-25 connector on the back of the PDI-1000S

(if used for the application).

The PDI-1000S is now ready for diagnostic testing.

Pooling, etc).

Install the wall bracket (Intecom Part Number 993-0009-100).

1. Remove the top screw from the top retaining bracket.

2. Place the bracket on the wall at the mounting location. Make a mark on the wall at the top of each of the two elongated holes in the retaining bracket.

3. Install the two screws at the marked location on the wall. Mount the wall bracket on the screws and tighten the screws.

Place the PDI-1000S, with the RS-232 connector side pointing down and rubber feet toward the wall, on to the wall bracket. Hold the PDI-1000S in place.

Place the wall bracket top retainer over the PDI-1000S and wall bracket as shown in figure 5. Install the screw on the wall bracket top retainer and tighten.

Connect the IBX LINE, 4-wire RJ-11 connectors, to the Line connector on the back of the PDI-1000S.

Connect a user interface cable to the DB-25 connector on the back of the PDI-1000S

(if used for the application).

The PDI-1000S is now ready for diagnostic testing.

Application Manual for building the desired configuration (i.e., MKO, Modem

Pooling, etc).

Mount the PDI-1000S Data Unit frame assembly by inserting and then tightening the four frame mount screws (figure 6) Attach the adapter for a 24-inch frame (when necessary). Otherwise, the frame will mount in a standard 19-inch cabinet. Intecom

Part Numbers: for the shelf unit is 993-0010-028; for the shelf enclosure is

993-0010-029.

Lower the front door of the PDI-1000S Data Unit. Insert the PDI-1000S card(s) into the Data Unit. The 4-wire RJ11 connectors should be facing toward the back of the

Data Unit.

Attach the IBX LINE (and ITE 4-wire line and DB-25 connectors when necessary) to the appropriate receptacles on the back on the PDI-1000S.

Label each IBX LINE and DB-25 connector cable with the appropriate PDI-1000S board designation. Label each PDI-1000S board slot on the top front and rear panels of the Data Unit frame assembly.

Group the cables together. Place a tie wrap around the group. Arrange the group and attach it to the frame in a manner that allows easy access to other cables located in the frame assembly.

The PDI-1000S is now ready for diagnostic testing.

NOTE

Cabling from the Classic IM are run to the area where the PDI-1000S' are located. The IM 25-pair cables are connected to the 25-pair cable (adapter cable, Intecom part number 100-0392-XXX) that is wired to twelve (12) station jacks. Each 25-pair cable can connect up to twelve (12) frame mounted PDI-1000S' at one time. Refer to Figure 7.

MAINTENANCE

There is NO field-level maintenance for the PDI-1000S. The only maintenance action is to remove and replace the unit.

CAUTION

There are no Field Serviceable parts inside the PDI-1000S. PDI-1000S cover removal will void the warranty .

TROUBLESHOOTING

If a problem occurs with an application, first remove and reinsert the RJ-11 plug in the IBX

LINE jack on the PDI-1000S. This will force a download of the application firmware. If the problem is not corrected by reloading the application program, then follow these steps to determine which unit is faulty:

Verify that the database configuration is correct for the application and that the program is being downloaded to the PDI-1000S.

To check out a Terminal-to-PDI-1000S interface problem. Turn OFF the power to the application data device and disconnect the DB-25 cable. Re-initialize the PDI-1000S, using one of the following methods and observe the PDI-1000S LED's.

To force a download in a PDI-1000S/IBX configuration use the

UTIL/LODR/FLPT command string. To force a download in a

PDI-1000S/TELARI or Intecom E configuration, use the CFG command.

To recycle power, remove and reinsert the Line Cord in the IBX LINE jack on the rear of the PDI-1000S.

The flash rates for the green MODE LED should be as follows:

Solid from power up through self test (diagnostic).

.5 second ON and .5 second OFF during idle mode of INITIALIZATION CODE.

.1 second ON and .1 second OFF during Loading of application program.

2.5 second ON and 2.5 second OFF during APPLICATION MODE (heart beat).

Observe the operation of the Green MODE LED. An error is only indicated, if there is no

Heartbeat pulsing on the MODE LED.

The flash rates for the red STATUS LED should be as follows:

ON SOLID Indicates an error status, if the Green MODE LED is not pulsing.

FLASHING Indicates inbound signals from the MCU.

Indicator changes reflect the connection status when any application is used. Applications may redefine the operation of the Status LED.

Refer to the troubleshooting chart on the following page.

With a PDI failure, remove the PDI-1000S by disconnecting all external connections

(DB-25 connector, IBX line, ITE station line). Replace the PDI with another unit having the same part number. Connect the cables previously removed.

TROUBLESHOOTING CHART FOR THE PDI-1000S

SYMPTOM

a. Mode light does not come on or stays on solid.

b. PDI does not go into Load Mode.

c. PDI goes into Load Mode, but does not complete

loading.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Bad line cable, ITE port or PDI. Test each by substitution.

Port out-of-service, Loader Database and/or

Application Name incorrectly defined.

Check Application Load software and revision information on PDI Loader.

Check PDI Load Abort Alarm 2080 on Primary

Console for additional information.

Insure PDI unit is the correct part number for the specific application.
