Everything contained in this manual is based on the latest product information available at the time of publication. The right is reserved to make changes at any time without notice. 1.1 Foreword The MCI and MCS are designed for use by trained service personnel to diagnose and repair motorcycle electronic systems. Every attempt has been made to provide complete and accurate technical information based on factory service information available at the time of publication. To increase their effectiveness with the MCI, users should familiarize themselves with the format and information contained in this guide. The MCI and MCS provide the following capabilities: • • Data Transfer and Control Module Update Future expandability, including diagnostic applications of MCS. 1.2 Location of Vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC) For the location of vehicle DLC connector refer to the Service Manual for the vehicle being tested. 1.3 CAUTIONS AND NOTICES In this User Guide: • CAUTION: indicates there is a possibility of injury to you or other people. • NOTICE: indicates the possibility of damage to the component being repaired. Operating Precautions CAUTION When performing any checks with the engine running in an enclosed space such as a garage, be sure there is proper ventilation. Never inhale exhaust gases; they contain carbon monoxide – a colorless, odorless, extremely dangerous gas which can cause unconsciousness or death. NOTICE • Make sure all cables and adapters are firmly connected before starting to use the MCI. • Always read the instructions completely before attempting a new procedure. 1.4 FCC COMPLIANCE (only USA) This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy. If not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, it may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his or her own expense. 3 1.5 Taking the Product Back and Recycling (only EU) Applicable to product that is sold into the European Union, the European Union has passed a directive called Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, or WEEE for short, to ensure that systems are setup throughout the EU for the collection, treating and recycling of electronic waste. This ensures that the devices are recycled in a resource-saving way representing no danger to health or the environment. The WEEE symbol is shown at the right. The WEEE symbol on the product or its packaging shows that the product must not be disposed of as residual garbage. The user is obliged to collect the old devices separately and return them to the WEEE take-back system for recycling 1.6 LIMITED LIABILITY Vetronix does not warrant that the operations of the Vetronix software will be uninterrupted or error free. Select the MCI icon (30) on the screen and click on Recover (31) to update the MCI. 30 31 20 5. IF YOU ARE HAVING A PROBLEM This section is to help you if you are having problems with the MCI. 5.1 MCI ERROR ICON LIGHTS UP AFTER POWER ON This indicates a problem has been detected during power on. Recommendations: • Power down the MCI and verify that it has the same problem when you power up again. • Perform the recovery procedure. Refer to “Recover MCI Software” section of this manual. • Contact your local Honda distributor. 5.2 MCI FAILS TO POWER UP The MCI should power up when external power is applied. If the MCI does not turn on, first check the cable connections. Try supplying the MCI with power from another power source – the vehicle DLC, USB connector. Recommendations: • Check that there are no bent, broken, missing, or dirty cable connector pins. • Check that the cables are securely attached to the MCI. • If connecting to the vehicle DLC, try powering up from the USB connector to the PC. • If connecting to the USB connector, try powering up the vehicle DLC. • If the MCI still fails to power up, you may have a problem with your MCI. Contact your local Honda distributor. 5.3 VCI MANAGER CAN NOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE MCI The VCI Manager must be installed on the PC and the MCI must be powered up in order to communicate with each other. If using the Wi-Fi interface (optional), the MCI must be configured for wireless in order for communication to be successful. The MCI will first attempt to communicate with the VCI Manager with the USB connection. If USB is not available, the wireless connection will be made. Recommendations: • Verify that the MCI has completed its power on cycle, the connector pins are clean, and the VCI Manager is running on the PC. • If connecting with USB, check that the MCI USB connection is detected by Windows. o Check that the cable is securely attached to the MCI and the PC. o Connect the MCI to the PC USB port. 21 o From Windows Control Panel, open the Network and Dial-up Connections window (Windows XP and Windows Vista) or the Network and Sharing Center window (Windows 7). Check for device name “ETAS USB Remote NDIS Network Device”. If not found, then either the USB driver has not been loaded on the PC or the MCI is not connected to the USB port. Check all ports on the PC and verify the MCI is powered on. • If connecting with the Wi-Fi interface (optional), make sure the wireless communication is enabled. o Check that the USB cable is not plugged in. USB connection takes precedence over wireless connection. o Check that the wireless device is properly inserted in the MCI. o Contact your PC Administrator and check that your PC is detecting wireless. • Perform the recovery procedure. Refer to “Recover MCI Software” section of this manual. • Contact your local Honda distributor. If you are experiencing problems with your MCI and the above suggestions do not solve the problem, contact your local Honda distributor. 22
