Title: Resolving a corrupt spfile in Oracle
Platform
IWS Server
Version
3.0.x
Operating System
Windows, Solaris
Category
Oracle
Description:
This technical bulletin describes how to resolve the situation when the database will not start because of
spfile corruption. This can happen by editing the spfile or by saving an invalid string in the spfile.
When this happens, the SQL startup mount command produces error messages like these:
ORA-16032: parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST destination string cannot be translated
ORA-09291: sksachk: invalid device specified for archive destination
OSD-04018: Unable to access the specified directory or device.
O/S-Error: (OS 3) The system cannot find the path specified.
Action:
1)
Rename out the bad spfile:
a.
Go to the ORACLE_HOME\database subdirectory.
b.
Rename the spfile, e.g. from SPFILEORAIWS.ORA to something like SPFILEORAIWS.BAD.
2)
Shut down the database with shutdown immediate
3)
Startup the database specifying the init.ora file to use, with:
SQL> startup pfile=c:\oracle\admin\oraiws\pfile\init.ora.<number>;
4)
Create a new spfile with:
create spfile from pfile=’c:\oracle\admin\oraiws\pfile\initoraiws.ora’;
You should now have a new SPFILEORAIWS.ORA in c:\oracle\u01\product\920\database
Test to make sure that the original problem is fixed.
