LEAB Power Supply Systems for Commercial and Emergency Vehicles
Police, fire-fighting and emergency rescue vehicles are important resources for fulfilling increasingly demanding tasks
in an ever more complex world. The smooth functioning of the
vehicle and its ancillary equipment is a basic requirement for
reducing the stress on emergency services, enabling them to
concentrate on their main objective: to protect and save human lives. Today‘s concepts for vehicles place high demands
on a continuously available power supply that guarantees the
uninterrupted functioning of onboard communication, medical and signalling technology.
LEAB – which has focussed on providing specialised electrical
equipment for vehicles for more than 20 years – develops, designs and delivers all of the equipment for mobile power supplies in emergency vehicles from a single source. However, we
do not see ourselves as a parts distributor; instead, we offer
sophisticated concepts whose reliability has been proven
by years of experience and which meet today‘s practical demands. Since automotive technology and operational tactics
are continuously changing, we are also constantly developing
new solutions for optimum power supplies based on practical

One of LEAB’s particularly innovative fields is the successful
development of a practical and safe lithium battery system
as a booster battery for emergency vehicles. A unique battery
system was developed in cooperation with the world‘s
leading manufacturer of battery management systems. From
the very beginning, we focussed on a system that is perfectly
suited to everyday use while, at the same time, fulfilling the
highest safety requirements. This has made the CLAYTON
lithium battery system the booster battery with the highest
safety concept and the most advanced solution on the
market.
LEAB is launching a pioneering advanced development in
the field of conventional lithium battery power supply systems with its Lithium Power Supply (LPS) – an “all-in-one solution” which can definitely be described as a world first. The
LPS combines a 12 V / 100 Ah lithium battery with integrated
battery management (BMS), a 12 V / 50 A charger, a 1500 W sine
wave inverter and a 50 A booster in one single unit. This innovative “green generator”, which weighs just 28 kg, takes over
all the functions of the classical equipment with an output of
100 Ah at 12 V, is easy to install (plug & play) and ready for use
immediately once switched on.
Another innovative in-house development from LEAB is the
PowAirBox, a fast and safe system for the reliable supply of
power and compressed air to rescue and fire brigade vehicles.

LEAB CTC Twin Charger

Install & charge – twice as good
The outputs of the CTC twin charger (Compact Twin Charger) can be
set separately for wet cell, gel/AGM or traction batteries as well as
for CP lithium batteries. It is suitable for all types of 12 V lead batteries as well as for CP lithium batteries. Ignition interlock and remote
display connections round off the extensive features.
The new LEAB CTC 1230-2 is an innovative battery charger with two
outputs which work completely independently and can be used
for charging different types of batteries. It can be used for the reliable charging of two 12 V/30 Amp batteries. The size and shape of the
new LEAB twin charger corresponds to the familiar CPC series. Moreover, the CTC twin charger is equipped with an additional 12 V
output which can be used for the connection of an ignition interlock
or additional LED.

NEW!
The keypad is easy to use and permits each output to be switched
separately between four different charging characteristics for standard wet cell, gel/AGM or traction batteries as well as lithium batteries. A twin LED display provides information about the respective
state of charge during charging as well as about any faults that may
occur.
The completely separate structure means that there are two
independently settable and adjustable outputs available, enabling
different battery types to be charged at the same time at the two
outputs. Both outputs can charge batteries even better and more
gently by compensating the ambient temperature through CTS
sensor cables for temperature and voltage measurement (Art. no.
16.010.36713, sensor cable for temperature & voltage, 5.0 m).
CTC 1230-2 Twin Charger
The standard rubber border around the case and the 230 V
connection via the Neutrik plug system are further advantages of
the CTC 1230-2 twin charger.

Selecting the Right Charger
• numerous basic models available
Most battery manufacturers recommend a charging capacity for
their batteries of 10 to 30 % of the battery‘s nominal capacity (Ah). For
this reason, automatic chargers are specified for a certain range of
battery sizes.

However, some applications such as hand-held lamps, radios, DC
chargers, refrigerators, lights, etc., require operational feed while
charging the battery. This means that part of the charging power is
diverted and effectively reduced. This consumption must be taken
into account when determining the loading capacity so as to achieve
a charge that is fast, sufficient and protects the battery.

Champ Pro chargers:
Like their predecessors, the LEAB Champ chargers of the new Pro
series in IP67 enclosures are extremely compact, light and robust as
well as fully waterproof and dust-tight. They are used to charge wet,
gel and AGM batteries fully automatically.
The chargers of the Champ Pro series can be converted to different
battery types using a keypad and can even be used as a power supply
independent of the battery.

Charge Generators & Portable Pumps using Onboard Power Supply
Portable pumps and fire service generators with their own
starter batteries will only start up reliably if the batteries are
charged regularly. LEAB TS onboard chargers are used for
the automatic charging of 12V batteries for generators and
portable pumps using the 12V or 24V onboard power supply
– depending on the vehicle type. A helix charging cable, preassembled with MagCode or plug connection according to
DIN 14690 as required, makes flexible use possible.

Lithium Power Supply – compact, efficient & emission-free
The complete unit on a lithium basis:

Whether in special fire brigade or ambulance vehicles or
for private use during camping trips and on power gliders:
those who use a system for mobile power supply that is independent of the mains network currently have to put a lot of
time and effort into materials, which means a financial commitment too. In addition to a bulky and heavy lead battery,
various additional devices are required such as a booster for
supplying from the starter battery, a charger and an inverter,
an electric switch panel, a display module as well as two separate connections (input and output) for 12 V direct current
or 230 V alternating current. On top of all that – depending on
the make – a lot of noise is to be expected, as well as a relatively high susceptibility to maintenance due to the networking of several individual units.
Thanks to the latest development from LEAB, the Lithium
Power Supply (LPS), these problems are now all a thing of the
past. Despite compact dimensions of only 390 x 244 x 250 mm,
the new device takes over all the functions of the classical
equipment. It thus offers users a smart all-in-one solution
which can easily be installed by non-electricians and is ready
to operate immediately when switched on (plug & play). These key improvements compared to all the solutions available
before make the new development truly worthy of the “Word
First” title.
At the heart of the compact system is a 100 Ah lithium battery
(lithium iron phosphate LiFePo4). It has the same efficient
capacity as two 100 Ah wet cell/gel batteries and provides
more than 2,000 charging/discharging cycles at 80 % discharge. An intelligent 50 A charger charges in just over an hour
via the mains grid (on-land connection) or in two hours when
connected to the generator during the trip.
Consumers which require 230 V alternating current are supplied via an integrated 1500 W sine wave inverter during the
trip or at a standstill. Since no engine needs to run for operation, annoying secondary effects such as exhaust gases or
noise are no longer relevant. In addition, the unit makes additional charging via a solar panel possible.
The reliable control of the charging/discharging power and
time, the remaining running time, capacity and all other functions is taken over by a complex Battery Management System (BMS). A charge current distributor ensures that the starter battery is charged as top priority, then the LPS. A 50 Amp
DC-DC booster makes optimum use of the generator power to
charge the lithium battery and is also compatible with generators equipped with a generator management system. Last
but not least, the LPS includes an integrated electric switch
panel with 2-pole 230 V fuse and a residual current circuit
breaker (RCCB). Both devices allow safe and straightforward
installation.
The decisive advantage of the new product compared to the
conventional solution is its compact size. The LPS requires
far less space than two 100 Ah batteries and still only weighs
28 kg despite all its integrated components.

Two different CLP DC universal cable sets (medium/large) are available as accessories, for connection to the existing or new consumer
battery. All CLP G3 inverters and combi units are compatible with

G3 Display/Remote Control
The G3 display/remote control is an optional accessory which can be
used to control and monitor up to 6 combi units or inverters. It can
also be used to switch a power generator on and off automatically.

Providing the power supply has been designed correctly, emergency vehicles can work almost independently without any external

A dependable synchronous 3-phase alternator is the power station of
a vehicle. Even when the engine is idling, it supplies all of the auxiliary
components with electric power and charges the starter battery.
Today‘s basic equipment includes 14 V generators with a charging
current of 90 to more than 200 A and 28 V generators with 55 to 100 A.
They are driven almost exclusively by V-belts: depending on the engine,
either by poly V ribbed belts or by simple V belts.

In every type of commercial vehicle it is necessary for all the
on-board functions to be ready for use at all times. However,
this is quite literally vital for vehicles used by the rescue services and fire brigade, because in these cases, lives might be
lost if the technology does not work perfectly. Charged batteries and full compressed air tanks are among the most important basic requirements for a successful rescue mission
where every second counts.

Up to now, this could only be guaranteed by using two separate systems for power and compressed air supply. This is
not only impractical, it also involves a significant risk potential: the plug connections can be forgotten when the vehicle leaves the station, leading to considerable damage to the
vehicle and the building. Every time the vehicle is called out,
two connecting lines have to be separated manually from the
vehicle. With the PowAirBox® these problems are a thing of
the past!

The PowAirBox® is a supply system that was especially
developed for rescue vehicles and fire trucks. It supplies
every vehicle with power and with compressed air if required. When the vehicle engine is started, a special separation device automatically separates the supply line from the
vehicle. Ejection is by means of a stainless steel spring and an
electric magnet which can withstand any load. Even repeated engine start-up does not cause any damage.

Two of the auxiliary contacts available in the standard version can be freely assigned, for example for status display
on the central PC, for start prevention or charging at higher
charging powers. The PowAirBox® complies with the currently valid DIN 14679. The insulated protected casings are made
of glass-fibre reinforced polyamide in accordance with PA6
GF30 and the IP55 standard.
The PowAirBox® is available in 4 variants, whereby the couplings with and without compressed air are mutually compatible. Coded pins reliably prevent faulty connections being
made e.g. between a 24 V coupling and 12 V onboard power
supply.
The PowAirBox® is absolutely operator-friendly, reliable
and maintenance-free onboard equipment which has an excellent chance of becoming the norm in future. We grant a
warranty period of at least 3 years for all orders (optionally
up to 5 years).
A battery state of charge display with LED indication is
part of the standard equipment. This guarantees permanent checks on the current state of charge of the battery.
In the event of undervoltage, a clearly audible acoustic
signal is sounded in addition to the optical display. The extremely sturdy ejection system separates the supply

The converters in the PV series make it easy to operate standard versions of 12 V devices such
as mobile phones, built-in radios and 2-way radio sets or 12V refrigerators in vehicles with a 24 V
electrical system or aircraft with a 28 V wiring system. The voltage converters operate with low
heat emission thanks to their efficient switch mode power supply technology with SMD circuit
boards throughout. This achieves high efficiency as well as high resistance to mechanical shocks.

Battery Monitor & Booster
LEAB has a series of powerful battery monitors – BW – in its range to
protect supply batteries and connected loads from the potentially
dangerous consequences of undervoltage and total discharge.
LEAB BW 20
The battery monitors set off alarms and switch the device off when
the set switch-off thresholds are reached, ensuring that the necessary
battery recharging measures are taken and voltage dips can be avoided when powerful loads are switched. It is important that batteries
“hold out” for problem-free operation.

LEAB BW 60
The BW 801 battery monitor provides low voltage protection and can be universally applied for 12V and 24V electric systems. The
threshold value is set using a DIP switch, and the high current capacity of 70 A as well as the solid M6 bolts enable even more powerful loads to be switched off without an intermediate relay.
Transient voltage dips or peaks, such as those that may occur when switching powerful loads, do not cause false trips. The BW 801
is a two-stage low voltage protector that sets off an alarm when the first threshold value is reached and switches the device off
when the second value falls below the threshold and the set time span. A three-colour LED display is used as an operating state indicator. The “alarm” connection can be used to switch an external buzzer (contact to earth, max. 1 A).

DC-DC booster PBU 1412 / 12V-12V with relay
The LEAB DC-DC booster PBU 1412 increases the charging voltage irrespective of the state of charge of the starter battery to the
required value of 14.4V and supplies a continuous current of 12 amps (IU characteristic). If the auxiliary battery is fully charged,
the output current of the booster automatically adapts itself and drops.
The LED on the device lights up when the booster is charging. The
starter battery and load battery are disconnected at switch-off.
The LEAB DC-DC booster is suitable for all types of lead batteries
providing they have been designed for a charging voltage of 14.4 V.

EXIDE DUAL AGM batteries are high-current batteries that were developed to
supply emergency rescue vehicles with power and ensure especially good starting
performance for engines.
The battery‘s particularly low internal resistance enables a faster and higher charge
current (over 100A). Accordingly, a discharged battery will recharge itself extremely
quickly! This means that this battery type is ideally suited, for example, for emergency rescue vehicles used for short distances.

TN network
In TN systems one of the points is connected directly with
earth (operational earth), the bodies of the electrical system
are connected to this point via the protective earth conductor.
The maximum permissible total earthing resistance is 2 Ohms.
Residual current circuit breakers (FI) are usually used for monitoring purposes.
IT network
The IT network is supplied either by another network via an
isolating transformer or a separate voltage source such as
an inverter or dynawatt generator. The special feature here
is that none of the active conductors are connected to earth.
For this reason, only a very small fault current can flow in the
event of an insulating fault; this is mainly determined by the
network leakage capacity. Upstream fuses do not respond,
so that operation can be continued even with one-pole earth
connection (so-called first insulation fault). If a second earth
connection occurs, the upstream fuses switch the system off.
IT network with insulation monitoring
The operational reliability of an IT network can be increased
even further by use of an insulation monitoring device. Continuous insulation identifies and signals even a gradual
decline in the insulation value before a second insulation
fault leads to an unexpected interruption in operation. Combination with a switch-off relay results in switch-off after
occurrence of the first insulation fault if required.
