How to Install a Replacement Coil
CAUTION
To avoid personal injury or property
damage, de–energize both line and control
power connected to the Bulletin 500LC
Lighting Contactor before proceeding.
1.
Open circuit breakers, then use a voltmeter to verify no voltage is present at
both control and line terminal screws.
2.
Label, disconnect, and tape all wires (control, line, load) from the lighting
contactor.
3.
Loosen the mounting screws and remove the Bulletin 500LC Lighting
Contactor from the enclosure.
Disassembly
Coil assembly is mounted in center of the lighting contactor base. See Figure 1.
4. Disconnect the coil leads. Carefully pull the coil lead with the flag terminal off
the side of the miniature switch; the lug can be pushed from behind. Then
loosen the terminal screw closest to the coil to disconnect the other coil lead.
See Figure 2.
5.
Remove the coil assembly. Use a screwdriver (counterclockwise) to remove
the two screws in the magnet frame. Then pull the coil assembly and
nameplate straight out.
Note: Leaf spring and actuator are loose parts on 2–...6–pole lighting
contactors. On lighting contactors with more than 6 poles the leaf spring is not
present, and the actuator is held in place by the lower contact block.
6.
Remove the coil. Slide the coil out of the right side of the magnetic frame.

Reassembly
Be sure that the control voltage stamped on the replacement coil is the same as
the coil voltage on the nameplate.
1. Install the new coil in the magnetic frame. Position the frame with the seam
facing the base. Position the new coil with the small hole outward and slide it
into the right side of the magnetic frame.
2.
Install the coil assembly onto the base (cam/core fits into the coil). Be sure the
magnetic frame is flat against the base. On 2–...6–pole contactors reinstall
and hold the lower actuator while reinstalling the leafspring and nameplate
onto the magnetic frame. The leaf spring is not used on 8–...12–pole
contactors. Then reinstall the two screws and tighten them to 10 in–lb. See
Figure 1.
3.
Connect the coil. Connect the coil lead with the lug to the push–on terminal on
the miniature swich. Connect the bare coil lead to closest top screw terminal
(under plate). See Figure 2.
4.
Insert the plastic screw from the kit into the center of the coil and carefully
turn it clockwise until the threads engage the cam/core. See Figure 3.
5.
Manually operate the lighting contactor. Use the plastic screw to close and
open the contactor by pushing it inward and pulling it outward. The action
should be smooth, without any binding. If not, recheck alignment of coil
assembly. See Figure 3.
Remove the plastic operating screw !
6.
Remove the plastic operating screw from the lighting contactor.
7.
Reinstall the lighting contactor into the enclosure and tighten the mounting
screws.
8.
Reconnect all wires previously removed. Tighten control connections to 10
in–lb. Tighten the line and load connections to 18 in–lb.
9.
Close circuit breakers and check electrical operation of the lighting contactor.
