Craft beers are currently all the rage around town. ‘Little Creatures Pale Ale’ (from Australia) and ‘Yeastie Boys Gunnamatta IPA’ (from New Zealand) are two new additions on draught. Bottled varieties are also available, ‘Little Creatures IPA’, ‘Orchard Crush Cider’, ‘Ballast Point Longfin’, ‘Digital IPA’, ‘First World Problems’, ‘Dry Hop’, ‘Coedo Shiro’, ‘Coedi Rui’ and ‘Ghost Ship’. A new selection of house wine is also on the horizon, featuring Californian Red and is an easy drinking, everyday style wine. Our chef’s, Willie, William and Udhey have been hard at work, creating many exciting promotions for our Members. The Indian Buffet is back and available on the first Wednesday of the month and there is a Japanese Ramen promotion, a Mediterranean promotion and a Mexican promotion as well as a salad promotion! On top of all this, do not forget our Easter Brunch Buffet, very popular and always gets fully booked, so book early to avoid disappointment. The night started off with Mr. Burns giving his opening speech and was joined by Marco Veringa for the champagne toasting. The food was delicious and was accompanied by lots of drinking – and it showed, with everyone very much happy! With lots of new and old faces, the night was filled with excitement and lots of fun as the programme included many games such as Bingo, drinking games and a chopsticks challenge. The host and MC’s, Eric from the Sports Department, Natalie from Front Desk, Ryan from Accounts and Edwin from Purchasing, made sure everyone was kept informed and suitably amused. There were prizes for all, and of course Mr. Burns distributed the yearly tradition of Lai See packets. Thank you to the committee for organising such a wonderful party this year! 10 11 12 C L U B M A T T E R S Compliments from Members To: Catering Subject: Wedding Celebration 12 Nov - Thank you! In summary records to date: U-11 With two wins out of two, by impressive margins of 120 and 94 runs, (and a share of the points in an abandoned match) the boys have made a strong start in their top level Elite league, and currently sit in first place. Keep going boys and try to make it 4 finals in 4 years! U-13 With a season record of 3 wins and 1 tie across their seven matches, the team placed 3rd out of 8. A great effort, including a strong victory by 84 runs against DLSW Littles. U-15 Unfortunately the season is not going as well as one would hope, but the team have recorded a great win against DLSW Lions by 142 runs, thanks to 66 from Danish Mohammad, and great bowling from Ali Shebang Zaidan (3 for 10) and Bilal Akhtar (3 for 16). One match left in the season. U-17 With another victory since the new year, the team have finished the season 3rd out of 5. Their latest win by 10 wickets against HKCC Wanderers came with openers Zakir Hayat and Hamza Bukhari knocking off the required runs without loss, with scores of 45 and 54 not out respectively. Men’s Saturday Our Championship A team stands 7th out of 10, with 3 matches to go. A great performance before CNY saw the defeat of HKCC Nomads by 98 runs, thanks to a century from Max Abbot (103 not out), 58 from Rameez Raja, and 4 for 31 from the bowling of Uwaise Rahman. Womens Our ladies are sitting 6th out of 7 in their T20 League, and still have all to play for in their Sixes competition which has yet to start. 26 New Bowling Machine A little over a year ago, the Club supported the Cricket section in the purchase of a bowling machine, to allow batsman to conduct focused training sessions in our nets. The machine has been very useful in honing the techniques of our leading players – however, it was only able to deliver ‘hard’ balls and thus was not suitable for Juniors. At the end of last year our supplier, ‘BOLA’ (a dedicated manufacturer of this equipment from the UK), advised us that they now had available a scaled down version of the machine, suitable for younger players. The section is now delighted to have available one of ‘BOLA’s’ junior machines, and thus able to provide the same level of technical batting instruction to its younger players. The machine delivers either tennis balls for beginners, or a ‘soft’ ball for more experienced players. Speeds are moderated, and at between 20-60 miles per hour replicate the bowling pace through the U11, U13 and U15 age groups. Already the machine has proved very useful in allowing coaches to run highly structured sessions with guaranteed bowling accuracy, allowing batsmen to work confidently on repeating their shot techniques. This machine has been purchased through yearly allocated section budget. The AGM will re-elect the next Lawn Bowls Section Subcommittee, and will consider and pass if thought fit any resolution raised according to the Byelaw of USRC. 34 Questions Frequently Asked Q: If one of the team members is absent at the scheduled start time, what shall we do? A: For team games (e.g. national competitions), if one or more players are absent from a team, the defaulting team will forfeit the game to their opponents. (Laws of the Sport of Bowls clause 39.1). Remark: All matches shall start at the time as appointed or subsequently mutually agreed by the teams and duly notified to the Association (HKLBA Byelaw clause 6.8a); no grace period. For side games like premier league, if at the appointed time plus grace period, less than 12 players (9 for triples league) but at least 9 (6 for triples) are present, the offending side shall field teams of 3 players (2 for triples league). Should a fourth (third in triples) team member subsequently appear, (s)he may play in any position except skip, and 25% of the score shall be deducted from only those ends played with 3 players (2 in triples). (HKLBA Byelaw clause 3.5c & 4.5c). Remarks: There is a grace period of 30 minutes on private greens. No grace period applies on public greens. (HKLBA Byelaw 3.5a & 4.5a) Grace period on private greens is under revision by the HKLBA Council. No-grace-period practice as public green may be adopted in Premier League 2017. Q: What if the absentee is the Skip? A: Any player comes in late will be treated as substitute and (s)he can play in any position other than skip. Please note that the scorecard will have to be updated with the new lineup before the start of the game. (HKLBA League Notice, 8 Sept 2015). Answers are based on Laws of the Sport of Bowls Crystal Mark Third Edition and HKLBA Byelaw version 16. Welcome New Members For all those Club members who would like to join the Lawn Bowls Section or to have a glimpse of lawn bowling, please feel free to contact any of our Subcommittee members for arrangement of beginners' classes. Enjoy the green! Do You Know? Pace of Green is the time (in number of seconds) taken by a bowl from its delivery to the moment it comes to rest at approximately 27 metres from the mat line. The World Bowls recommended the pace of green to be from 10 to 18 seconds. The pace for green currently adopted by HKLBA for Hong Kong is from 9 to 18 seconds. HKLBA Notice 21 June 2016: Either side may request to check the pace of green after trial ends. Each side shall assign one player to deliver the bowl and another player to time. Time starts when the bowl leaves the bowler’s hand, and stops when the bowl stops completely. Only bowls stopped within 1m from the jack will be valid. Time registered by both sides will be averaged and recognized when their difference is less than 1 second. In league, the test shall be conducted on a rink where the two players delivering the bowls will not play on. The above arrangement will also apply in national competitions (except in games with duty umpire). The leads of each team (or marker in Singles) shall conduct the test on the rink of play. If the pace of the green proves to be outside the allowed range, the game will be re-scheduled and the current bye-laws apply. Once both sides agree to start the game, no more query on the pace of green should be raised. Should the green condition change during the game due to inclement weather, the current rules and bye-law(s) apply. With impressive performances against Fiji and Japan, where Tigers Natasha Olson-Thorne with her dynamic, powerful drives and Jessica Ho’s controlling head featured heavily. This coupled with a sweep of Kazakhstan in the buildup shows we are starting to see the early returns of increased resources being pumped into the Women’s game. After beating Fiji 45-7 and solid performance in a 20-8 loss to Japan saw Hong Kong qualify as Asia/Oceania 2 in Pool A alongside Women's world's number one team New Zealand, Canada who currently sit in 5th and Wales who are 7th. When asked “What does it mean to you?” after qualifying, Jessica Ho responded “To be honest, qualifying for the world cup is life changing. It's an incredible opportunity for us to be able to play against the best in the world. Only having played our first game against a non-Asian side in December 2015, we've come a long way in a short time. It's a real credit to how dedicated and hard working the squad have been leading up to the qualifiers and how hard each individual will work to get into the world cup squad. We're all really proud of the legacy we're creating and inspiring young girls in Hong Kong to want to be part of the national squad one day.” With Hong Kong sitting at 22nd in the ranking they know they have a tough job on there hands but with the great strides the community, domestic and national game has made in recent years it will undoubtedly be the building blocks for a great future. The qualification marks the first-time any Hong Kong team will feature at a fifteen-a-side World Cup for either men or women, with the men’s side having made six previous appearances at the Rugby Sevens World Cup. With Winnie Siu Wing-Ni, Jessica Ho Wai-On, Lindsay Varty, Natasha Olson-Thorne and Wong Yuen-Shan all taking part during the last Qualification rounds the Borrelli Walsh USRC Tigers are looking forward to a large contingency of their squad pushing hard for selection and representing them and Hong Kong during the World Cup, which takes place in Ireland this year. We wish them the best of luck. 37 Tennis News Martin Li, Tennis Convenor Congralutions to the match winners. Thanks to Chairman Mr. Patrick Cheung, who was our honoured guest to present the prizes. Known by several local names in different countries – Chaughan (Persian), Da-Kyu(Japanese), Khis-Kouhou(Russian), Djerid(Turkish), and Sagol Kangjei (Indian), the origin of Polo modern name is perhaps most closely akin to its Tibetan variation, Pulu, which means ball. In India, Polo or the game of kings was popularized under the rule of Babar, founder of the Mughal dynasty in the 15th century among the royalty. With the rise of the Mughal dynasty, Polo gained its regal status and was firmly established as the national sport of India, and sadly with the eventual decline of the dynasty in the 18th century, the sport too lost its place in the hearts of many. Fortunately, in the remote regions of Gilgit, Ladakh and Manipur, the sport survived and it was in Manipur, many decades later that the sport was rediscovered once more and gained popularity among the Westerners. The origination of ancient Polo may be controversial; yet its spread to the west is undoubtedly credited to India around 1860 when a British officer, together with seven British Tea Planters based in Silchar, set up the first club of the modern game, the Silchar Polo Club. From then on, the popularity of the sport caught on among the British subjects in India and eventually the sport was introduced to Europe. Modern day polo credits India as the birthplace for the sport as it was in Manipur, India, that the sport was introduced to the Western civilization in the late 19th century. 44 The sport retained much of its regal status and format of play, as it did in India, among the European nobility. American polo, however, differed from its European counterpart in that it was a much faster sport, involving short passes to move the ball towards the oppositional goal. Today, Indian polo has evolved much since the times of Babar, the founder of the Mughal royalty, in the 15th century, who popularized the sport. No longer has an exclusive sport reserved for royalties, Indian polo turned professional with numerous privately owned teams and significant corporate sponsorships all in tow. As well, there are more than 30 Indian polo clubs dotted all over India, catering to the needs of polo enthusiasts and the uninitiated alike. Clinics Have you always wanted to learn how to play polo?
