3M™ E-A-R™ Optime™ Alert System
The Optime System is a complete solution to the question of identifying the required protection,
selecting and purchasing the right product where your employees are exposed to hazardous
noise levels.
Our system uses a simple, logically coloured classification to make the selection process easy. Firstly find out what your noise exposure
is, then look at the icons below and establish which class of hearing protection you require. Take note of the icon and choose from the
wide range of products featuring the correct icon.

3M™ E-A-R™ Optime™ Sound Check Meter
3M has a simple sound level indicator, the E-A-R Optime Sound Check Meter, that complements the
Optime™ Alert System by establishing which colour code you need to follow.
Use the Optime Sound Check Meter to identify the noise level
Place the meter as close to the work area as possible for a full shift. The
meter measures the sound level and then calculates an 8-hour time weighted
average. The symbols light up to the corresponding noise level. These
symbols correspond to an Optime classification.
Match the Optime Classification to a product
Using the Optime classification from the meter, you can find the matching
column on the Hearing Selection Chart on page 5. Choose one or more of the
products in that column for use in that work area.

Hearing Protection
3M™ E-A-Rfit™ Validation System
Technology that takes hearing conservation
to the next level…
Fit Test Your Hearing Protectors
The E-A-Rfit system assists in achieving optimal fit through hearing protector selection and employee training. In less than 10 seconds
per ear, the system generates a personal attenuation rating (PAR) that indicates a worker’s noise reduction levels for a given fitting and
hearing protector. Compare ratings across hearing protectors and fittings to determine best fit.
Get Objective, Personalised Results
This in-the-ear testing procedure differs from many other systems on the market by providing quantitative data that does not rely on
subject response. Fit, train, and motivate every worker using their Personal Attenuation Rating (PAR).
Audit, Assess & Manage
• Helps identify workers receiving inadequate protection that leaves them at risk of threshold shifts
• Indicates employees needing further fit training or alternative hearing protectors
• Input your noise exposure data and the E-A-Rfit software can help you identify the most appropriate hearing protector(s) and help
minimise over/under protection
• Improves long term performance of your hearing conservation programme
Fit, Train and Motivate
• Provides a tool for training proper insertion techniques and to assess proficiencies (as per requirements AS/NZS 1269.3)
• Motivates employees by helping them realise the control they have in protecting their hearing
Test is compatible with a variety of 3M™ E-A-R™ earplugs
Protection levels can be validated with many different 3M E-A-R earplugs. This selection includes specially-probed versions of foam,
no roll and reusable earplugs. Test plugs are sold separately.

H10 P3E Series Helmet Attachment
If you need to change your current Peltor helmet attached ear muffs to fit a different helmet
We recommend using the appropriate Z3* adapter (see selection table above) depending on the type of helmet you need to fit to. To retrofit the appropriate Z3* adapter onto the
existing P3* helmet attachment connection, use a Phillips screwdriver to take out the current Z3* adapter and replace with new Z3* adapter.

3M™ Peltor™ H10 Series Extreme Performance (Class 5)
The H10 Series is a high performance hearing protector and has been
developed for use in extremely noisy environments. The protection is based

The sealing rings are broad and filled with liquid and foam for the best fit
and low contact pressure. The H10 Series stands for effective protection

3M™ Peltor™ Push to Listen™
Earmuff
Peltor Push to Listen (PTL) lets workers listen to low level sounds safely
without removing their muffs. Just push the button on the PTL muff and
speech and sounds “outside” the muff cup can be heard “inside” – clearly
and safely. After 30 seconds, the muff automatically returns to its protection.
To listen again, just push again. It’s that simple. To listen with standard
earmuffs, many workers lift their earcups or remove their muff completely. This exposes them to the dangerous noise (see page 29,
100% usage). The Push To Listen feature is in one earcup only. Other cup is standard protection style.

Hearing Protection Use and Care
Disposable Earplugs
How to use
Care and cleaning
Slowly roll and compress
foam earplugs into a
very thin cylinder. While
compressed, insert the
earplug well into the ear
canal. Fitting is easier if
you reach around the head
to pull the ear outward and
upward during insertion.
Keep the earplugs clean
and free from material that
can irritate the ear canal.
Reach around the back of
your head and pull outward
on the ear while inserting
the plug until you feel it
sealing. This may seem
tight at first, especially
if you have never worn
earplugs.
Pre-moulded earplugs
could last several months
depending on the plug type,
your work environment,
hygiene and body chemistry.
They should be replaced if
they shrink, harden, tear,
crack or become permanently
deformed. Wash them in
warm soapy water and rinse
well. When dry, store them in
a carrying case.
Hold the large ends of the
pods and swivel them to
direct the tips into the ear
canal openings. Firmly
push and wiggle the pods
into the ear canal until
a snug seal is obtained.
Pulling on the outer ear
while pushing the pods will
be helpful to most wearers.
Most semi-aural hearing
protectors can be cleaned
in the same way as
pre-moulded earplugs.
Since the band holds the
tips in place to provide
an acoustic seal, do not
tamper with it otherwise the
protection afforded by the
device may be reduced.
Earmuffs must fully enclose
the ears to seal against the
head. Adjust the headband
so cushions exert even
pressure around the ears to
get the best noise reduction.
Pull hair back and out from
beneath the cushions. Do
not wear caps, store pencils
behind the ear or anything
that may break the seal.
Cushions can be cleaned
with warm soapy water
and rinsed thoroughly. Do
not use alcohol or solvents.
Cushions normally need
replacing at least twice a
year or more – whenever
they become stiff, cracked,
or do not seal. Do not modify
earmuffs in any way, and
especially do not stretch or
abuse the headband as this
will reduce protection.

100% Usage
Damage to hearing depends not only on the actual noise level but also exposure time. Just five
minutes carelessness during an eight-hour day can potentially lead to lifelong hearing loss.
That’s why 100% usage is critical in noisy environments if you are to get the protection that
the chosen hearing protector provides.
Choose a comfortable hearing protector that suits you and your needs.

Injuries Are Lifelong
The human ear is designed to pick up natural sounds. Many workplace processes and applications can generate noise levels that are
potentially harmful to hearing. When the tiny sensory hair cells are repeatedly exposed to excessive doses of noise, they break.
The surviving sensory hair cells can only process a fraction of the usual information transfer, thus leading to permanent hearing damage.
Normal ear showing an electron micrograph of tiny sensory hair
cells that are responsible for processing sound vibration into meaningful information.
Damaged ear showing an electron micrograph of tiny sensory hair cells broken as a
result of repeated exposure to loud noise resulting in permanent hearing loss.

Training and Support
3M’s team of Technical Specialists offer support and training to meet the needs of our customers. They can provide customers:
• Initial and ongoing technical support
• Advice and training for your company, including hazard audits for your workplace
• Can organise for fit testing for respiratory and hearing protection
No matter how effective a piece of PPE is, it will offer little or no protection if it is not fitted and worn correctly. Proper inspection,
cleaning and storage is vital for safety equipment that protects a worker's health and well being. That is why 3M offers training
programmes that explain the correct way to fit, inspect clean and store the PPE designed and manufactured by our company.
