About Us...
Optical Fibre Systems Pty. Ltd is a wholly privately Australian owned organisation with a committed
staff of optical fibre communications specialists. We specialise in manufacture and supply of high
quality optical fibre cables, high performance cable assemblies, termination enclosures, optical test
and measurement equipment and supply of optical fibre cable installation accessories.
We also specialise in jointing and testing of long haul single mode communication links. This
part of our business gives us the much needed continuing hands on experience which enables us
to develop products suited to the man in the field working with our products. This continuing
feedback process enables us to constantly improve our products ensuring that they are cost effective and practical for the end user.
We have been actively involved with manufacture of high return loss single mode cable assemblies for many years making our cable assemblies the first choice for the most discerning buyers. Our cable assembly laboratory is the most modern in Australia. Connector polishing is performed is a pseudo clean room environment to ensure that the polishing process is performed under ideal conditions.
Our manufacturing process makes use of mechanisation where possible to ensure that the
finished product is accurate and reliable every time. The state of the art manufacturing equipment includes the following:-
Seiko Instruments OFL-12 Mass Production Connector Polishers.
Schleuniger FO 7045 Automatic programmable optical fibre cable stripping machine which gives
unsurpassed accuracy in stripping and preparation of cable ends.
Rifocs 585RL, 575L and 586RL return and insertion loss measurement equipment enabling measurements of return and insertion loss at both 1310 nm and 1550 nm. This equipment enables automatic logging and serial numbering of all test results.
Direct Optical Research ZX-1 Zoom Interferometer which enables fast and accurate characterisation of connector end-face geometry including automatic measurement of the critical connector
parameters of fiber undercut, apex offset and radius of curvature.

The OFS-500 is a 1RU high enclosure with a patch panel capacity of 24

and is fitted with a clear perspex lid for pigtail protection. Access to the
OFS-500-SSC-A 1RU, 24 Way SSC Panel Fitted, No Cassettes, No T/A’s
pigtail splicing area can be obtained by undoing the 4 mounting bolts
which mount the closure into the equipment rack and then sliding off the OFS-500-DSC-A 1RU, 12 Way DSC Panel Fitted, No Cassettes, No T/A’s

The Optical Fibre Systems OFS-900 rack mounted splice and distribution
enclosure is specifically designed for LAN applications to enable optical

The enclosure comprises of a sheet metal rectangular drawer and a 1RU
high housing with adjustable recess mounting brackets.

RACK MOUNT ACCESSORIES
The 1RU Slotted Panel is designed for use with the OFS
range of rack mount enclosures. Mounting above the
rack mount enclosure provides a convenient path for
patch leads to run safely to equipment in the rack whilst
managing fibres away from the fronts of patch panels to
provide good drawer access for the future.
These 1 Rack Unit (1RU) blanking panels are magnolia in colour and match all
the Optical Fibre Systems range of rack
mounted enclosures.
They can be supplied with a warning
label to warn customers about disconnection ramification, appropriate cleaning, and hazards.
These protective panels mount above the rack mount
enclosure and provide good mechanical protection to
limit accidental damage to patch cords plugged into the
patch panels. Patch cords simply run back over the top
portion of the enclosure and run down the rails to equipment in the rack. These panels come complete with the
Laser Safety Symbol and written Laser Warning notices
attached to the front panel.

The closure features internal strain relief posts to anchor loose tube type
cables and “L” brackets for anchoring riser style cables. Each enclosure is
provided with one cable gland for the incoming cable and a patch lead
anchor point for outgoing cables. Patch lead exit is via a rectangular hole
in the top and bottom of the enclosure which can accommodate Clipsal
PVC mini trunking number 900/40. The enclosure is provided with a
blanking panel for unused exit holes.

This versatile 12 way termination module is suitable for the termination of
a Riser or Loose Tube style cable by either fusion splicing or direct termination where the flexibility of a patch panel is required.
The enclosure can be mounted by fixing of two screws, and has a hinge
plate design to allow access to the fusion splices stored below the patch
panel. A brass heat-shrink nipple for entry into the enclosure provide
adequate strain relief for loose tube style cables. Flexible tubing runs
underneath the splice cassette tray to provide a convenient splice point
underneath the patch panel area. This provides great mounting flexibility
at a low cost.

JOINT ENCLOSURES
The OFS-1080 Optixlink joint closure is a single ended metallic enclosure developed for use on optical grounding wires of overhead electrical power network
lines.
The closure is suitable for use above or below ground. It can be attached to
high voltage towers, poles (concrete or wooden), walls or other structures.
One model can be used for many applications including hybrid jointing to Air
Dielectric Self Supporting (ADSS) or Loose Tube Underground cables, spur
joints or in-line splicing.
The Optixlink has been specifically designed to meet the harshest of weather
conditions. With an all 316 grade stainless steel exterior including cast stainless
steel cable clamping cleats makes this closure the most survivable in the market.
The large 144 splice capacity combined with a range of cleat sizes between 10 and
19 mm diameter makes the Optixlink adaptable to most OPGW applications.
One mounting bracket covers all mounting requirements from concrete pole,

specifications, with either single-mode or multimode fibre.
Our use of premium quality, industry recognised, connectors and cables combined with our stringent assembly
procedures and quality control methods ensures that Optical Fibre Systems cable assemblies achieve superior
optical performance and mechanical strength.
Every cable assembly manufactured by Optical Fibre Systems is built to the customer’s requirements, examined
and tested in accordance with EIA 455-95 to exceed the connector manufacturer’s insertion loss and return loss
specifications. Typical insertion losses are less than 0.3 dB.
Our facility is capable of handling both large and small volume assembly requirements, as well as PC polish (PC),
ultra PC polish (UPC), and angled PC polish (APC) techniques. In addition we stock a quantity of cable assemblies pre-terminated with popular connector types to reduce turn around time in breakdown situations.
Our facility has the latest range of test equipment to ensure that product delivered is of the highest quality and
within specification. This equipment includes a DORC interferometer and a range of Return Loss Test Sets capable of measurements at wavelengths of 1310nm and 1550nm. All cable assemblies are 100% tested before
dispatch to the customer.
The factory can offer quick turn-around for small quantities of cable assemblies and as every lead is made to

The FITEL S178A Core-Alignment Fusion Splicer is
the latest, state-of-the-art addition to the S17x
series of splicers. By combining high speed, precision, durability and portability in one unit, the
S178A Fusion Splicer ushers in an entirely new
range of application for core alignment splicing.
Equipped with a new alignment system that can
save up to 20% splicing time, the S178’s improved
heating mechanism can also reduce protection
sleeve shrink time by more than 30%. In addition, a
newly incorporated USB2.0 interface speeds PC
communication and image/video transfer, while
enhancing reliability.
Although the S178A Fusion Splicer is significantly
smaller and lighter in weight than previous models,

GLOSSARY
Adaptor:
A device used for joining two optical fibre connectors together.
Attenuation:
The decrease in magnitude of power of a signal in transmission between points. A term used for expressing the total losses on an
optical fibre consisting of the ration of light output to light input. Attenuation is usually measured in decibels per kilometer (dB/
km) at a specific wavelength.
Attenuator:
A device inserted into the optical path to lessen or weaken the signal.
Bandwidth:
Measure of the information carrying capacity of an optical fibre, normalized to a unit of MHZ.km. This term is used to specify
capacity of multimode fibres only. For single mode fibres dispersion is the limiting factor.
Bend Loss:
A form of increased attenuation caused by either having the fibre curved around a restrictive radius of curvature, or microbends
caused by minute distortions in the fibre imposed by externally induced perturbations. Excessive bend loss may result from poor
drawing or cable manufacturing techniques.
Bend Radius:
Radius a fibre can bend before the risk of breakage or increase of attenuation.
Bidirectional:
The movement of optical signals in opposite directions through a common fibre.
Buffer:
A protective material extruded directly on the fibre coating to protect it from the environment.
Cable Assembly:
Optical fibre cable that has connectors installed on one or both ends. General use of these cable assemblies include the interconnection of multimode and single mode optical fibre cable systems. If connector is attached to one end of the cable, it is known as
a “Pigtail”. If connectors are attached to both end, it is known as a “Patch Lead”.
Cladding:
A low refractive index glass/medium that surrounds the core and provides optical insulation and protection of the core.
Connector:
A mechanical device used to align and join two fibres together to provide a means for attaching and decoupling it to a transmitter, receiver or another fibre.
Core:
The central region of the fibre through which light is transmitted.
Coupler:
A device that connects three or more fibre ends, dividing one input between two or more outputs or combining two or more
inputs into one output.
Decibel (dB):
The standard unit used to express gain or loss of optical power.
Dispersion:
The cause of bandwidth limitations in a fibre. Dispersion causes the broadening of input pulses along the length of a fibre. Two
major types are a) “Modal Dispersion” caused by differential optical path lengths in a multimode fibre, and b) “Chromatic Dispersion” caused by a differential delay of various wavelengths of light in a waveguide material.
Duplex:
A duplex cable contains two fibres; a duplex connector links a pair of fibres.
Ferrule:
A mechanical fixture, generally a rigid tube, used to confine and align the stripped end of a fibre.
FOTP:
Fibre Optic Test Procedure.
Fusing:
The actual operation of joining fibres together by fusion splicing.
Graded Index:
Fibre design in which the refractive index of the core is lower towards the outside of the fibre core and increases towards the
centre of the core; thus, it bends the rays inward and allows them to travel faster in the lower index of refraction region. This
type of fibre provides higher bandwidth capabilities.
Insertion Loss:
Additional loss in a system when a device such as a connector is inserted, equal to the difference in signal level between the input
and output.

LAN:
Local Area Network: a geographically limited communications network intended for the local transport of data, video and voice.
Macrobending:
In an optical waveguide all macroscopic deviations of the axis from a straight line.
Microbending:
In an optical waveguide, sharp curvatures involving local axis displacements of a few micrometers and spatial wavelengths of a
few millimeter. Such bends may result from waveguide coating, cabling, packaging, installation, etc.
Numerical Aperture: The number that expresses the light gathering power of a fibre.
OTDR:
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer.
Pigtail:
Optical fibre cable that has a connector fitted to one end only.
Reflectance:
The full or partial return of transmitted optical or electromagnetic energy to the source by an index or impedance mismatch,
measured in decibel (dB).
Simplex:
Single element as in a single fibre cable or single fibre connector.
Single Mode Fibre:
An optical waveguide (or fibre) in which the signal travels in one “mode”.
Splice:
A mechanical or fusion joint connecting two fibres together.
Splitter:
Another name for a Coupler.
WDM:
Wavelength Division Multiplexer, a passive device that transmits signals at different wavelengths through the same fibre.
