VPCCW Series Hard Disk Drive Replacement Instructions IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU START These easy instructions are intended to guide you through the replacement process. Before you begin, place your notebook computer on a clean or covered surface to avoid damage to the computer's case.* Follow the ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) damage prevention instructions: o o Hold parts by the edges, away from exposed circuitry when possible. Do not walk around excessively as this promotes static build-up. Remove jewelry before you begin work to avoid scratching the surface of your notebook computer.* The appearance of the electronic components shown in the illustrations may be different from the components shipped. This slight difference does not affect the accuracy of these instructions. * Sony is not responsible for damage caused by incorrect handling of the notebook computer. 3. 1. 2. Step 1. Prepare the Computer. (Look for the screw hole with 2 dots) Step 2. Remove the Battery Pack. (HDD Removal) Steps 3-7) CAUTION: Make sure the computer is turned off, the lid is closed, and the AC Adapter is disconnected. Failure to do so can result in damage to the computer. Place the computer upside down on a protected surface with the front edge facing you. P/N 989200670 Rev. A Locate the release tab as shown in the picture. 1. Slide the left battery tab to the Unlock position. 2. With your finger slide the right battery tab in the release direction and hold. 3. Hook your finger under the battery pack and lift. 1/3 Step 3. Rotate the computer with the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Bay facing you as shown in the picture. Using the enclosed magnetic screwdriver, remove the (2) screws securing the hard drive access cover. VPCCW Series Hard Disk Drive Replacement Instructions Step 4. Remove HDD access cover and set aside. Step 5. Using the enclosed magnetic screwdriver, remove the (2) screws securing the hard drive assembly. Step 7. Once the hard drive assembly is disconnected from the connector carefully lift the hard drive assembly to remove from hard drive bay. (HDD Disassembly) Steps 8-10 OLD HDD Step 9. Holding the edge of the HDD, remove each screw and set the screw aside. These screws will be used to mount the HDD bracket onto the new HDD. NEW HDD Step 10. All (4) screws and bracket should now be removed from old HDD. Set old HDD aside. P/N 989200670 Step 8. After the HDD is completely removed, identify the (4) side screws that mount the HDD bracket to the HDD. Step 6. Locate the black plastic tab on the hard drive assembly and gently pull the original hard drive to the right to disconnect from connector. Rev. A (HDD Assembly) Steps 11-13 Step 11.
