ª Cautions about Batteries
This product uses batteries. Misuse of batteries could cause a leak, rupture or other trouble. Always abide by the following precautions when using batteries.
• Never recharge non-rechargeable batteries. The batteries could rupture or leak, causing fire or injury.
When installing batteries, pay attention to the polarity indications
(plus/minus (+/–) orientation), and install them correctly in the battery compartment as indicated. Putting them in backward could make the batteries rupture or leak, causing fire, injury or stains around them.
When throwing used batteries away, follow the disposal instructions indicated on the batteries and the local disposal laws. When you store or dispose of batteries, isolate their terminals with insulation tape or something like that to prevent them from contacting other batteries or metallic objects.
Do not use batteries other than those specified. Do not mix and use new and old batteries or different types of batteries together. The batteries could rupture or leak, causing fire, injury or stains around them.
Do not carry or store batteries together with small metal objects. The batteries could short, causing leak, rupture or other trouble.

Step 1: Prepare the SD card and power
ª Install the SD card
Insert the SD card into the SD card slot, which is inside the battery compartment on the bottom of the unit.
ª Preparing the power
Using AA batteries
Insert AA batteries into the battery compartment, which you opened when installing the SD card. This unit can use either alkaline or nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. It cannot recharge batteries.
Formatting is necessary if you insert a new SD card.
(Formatting will erase all the data on the card.)

Connect the unit with a computer using the included USB cable.

ª Setting the date and time
Use the
DATE/TIME
item from the
MENU
to set the internal clock to the current time.
The unit uses its internal clock to include the date and time of the recording in its file.
The unit will function properly even if you do not make this setting. When you first put batteries into the unit, however, the clock will begin advancing from the default value of
2000-01-01/00:00:00 and this incorrect date and time will be added to recording files. (See “Setting the date and time” on page 45.)
Be sure to use file formats that this unit can play back. These formats include MP3 (32–320 kbps, 44.1 kHz) and WAV (44.1 kHz, 16/24-bit).
ª Connect the computer
Use the included USB cable to connect the unit to the computer.
ª Transfer files from the computer
Copy audio files to the MUSIC folder on the LR-10 drive that appears on the computer.
ª Disconnect from the computer
After using the correct procedures to dismount the LR-10 drive from your computer, disconnect the USB cable. The unit should automatically turn off.

Step 2: Copy audio files from a computer
ª Prepare the audio files
Create audio files using the functions of the computer operating system or other computer software applications.

Connect the headphones/stereo line output jack of the keyboard or other instrument to the LINE IN jack of this unit using a 3.5-mm miniplug cable.

To record the sound from the LINE IN jack or hear it through headphones, line input must be ON ( ). If mic input is activated, set the

Connect headphones or a monitoring system (such as powered speakers or an amplifier and speakers) to this unit’s

CAUTION
Before connecting headphones, use the OUTPUT (–) button to minimize the volume. Failure to do so could cause the sudden output of loud sounds, which might lead to hearing damage or other harm.
Step 5: Tune the instrument
Use the unit’s tuning function to tune an instrument using the
LINE IN jack or built-in microphones.
Press the TUNER button to open the
TUNER
screen.

Step 6: Use the effects
This unit has built-in effects. You can use these effects on the input signal and on the playback signal.
Press the EFFECT button briefly to enable the effects. The last effect setting used is activated and the
FX icon appears highlighted (light letters on a dark background).
Step 7: Adjust the input and output levels
ª Adjust the headphones volume
Use the OUTPUT (+/–) buttons to adjust the headphones volume.
When adjusting the volume, the current level appears in a pop-up at the bottom of the display.
Press this button again to disable the effects. The
FX
icon appears as dark letters on a light background.
Press and hold the EFFECT button to open the
EFFECT
screen where you can make detailed settings.

ª Adjusting the microphone and line input level
Use the INPUT level dial on the right side panel to adjust the built-in microphones and LINE IN input level.

ª Adjusting the mix
Press the BALANCE button to adjust the volume of the file that is playing. Use this function to adjust the balance between the playback sound and the sound of the input from the built-in microphones or the LINE IN jack. Press the Á button to start playback of the song. Adjust the volume of the playback sound using the VALUE (+/–) buttons. While playing the instrument, adjust the balance between the playing song and the instruments.
NOTE
The
BALANCE
setting only affects the volume when MIC or
LINE is ON ( or ). When MIC or LINE is OFF (
), changing the
BALANCE
value has no effect on the
or volume.

Step 8: Play along with the music
This unit will output the sound input through the mic or the
LINE IN jack even when recording is not enabled. This allows you to select a song and play along after pressing the Á button.
This unit also has the following functions, which you can use as you like to make practicing your instrument even easier.
ª Use repeat playback
You can use two types of repeat playback. You can either play a loop between two set points or play an entire song and the entire playback area repeatedly.
Use the LOOP button for loop playback, which is useful for practicing a phrase repeatedly.
During playback (or when paused), press the LOOP button briefly at the point where you want to start loop playback to set the IN point. Then, press the LOOP button briefly again at the point where you want to stop loop playback to set the
OUT point and start loop playback of the interval between the points.

Press and hold the LOOP button to open the
LOOP SET pop-up screen where you can make fine adjustments to the
IN and OUT points. Other loop playback functions include, for example, the possibility of setting up to five loops for each file when the playback area is the playlist.

For repeat playback of a single file or the entire playback area, press the MENU button to open the

ª Change the key
You can change the playback pitch (key) in semitones. Press the KEY button to show the key setting at the bottom of the display.
Use the VALUE (+/–) buttons to change the setting value.

ª Changing the speed
You can also change the playback speed without changing the pitch.
You can, for example, reduce the speed to practice a song and gradually increase it as you become more proficient.
Press the SPEED button to show the speed setting at the bottom of the display.
After making the setting, press the HOME button to return to the Home Screen.

Use the VALUE (+/–) buttons to change the setting value.

Step 9: Record your performance
You can record the sound input through the built-in microphones or the LINE IN jack. Press the RECORD [–] button to start recording (except when the auto-record function is on and the input level is below the set value). Press and hold the RECORD [–] button to enable the pre-record function and put the unit into recording standby. Press the
RECORD [–] button to start recording, capturing sound up to 2 seconds before pressing the button. Press the [ª] button to stop recording.

Step 10: Record over a song
(overdub)
You can also record your performance together with the music that is playing back.
Use the  and ¯ buttons to select the song. Press the Á button while pressing and holding the RECORD [–] button to begin overdubbing.
Press the [ª] button to stop recording.

CAUTION
If you press and hold the record button, the unit will be put in recording standby with the pre-record function enabled, and overdubbing will not be possible.

Step 11: Use other functions
This unit has other functions, including a convenient playlist and the ability to divide files, which you can use as you like.
One such function is the metronome, which can be accessed easily by pressing the METRONOME button.

Step 12: Turn off the power
To turn the power off (put the unit in standby), press the
[ª] button and hold it until the shutdown screen appears.

About SD cards
This unit uses SD cards for recording and playback.
You can use 64 MB–2 GB SD cards and 4 GB–32 GB SDHC cards with this unit.

Use of cards that have not been verified for use with this unit could result in the unit not functioning properly.

The operating temperature should be between 0°C and
40°C (32°F and 104°F).
Do not install in the following types of places. Doing so could degrade the sound quality and/or cause malfunctions.
• Places with significant vibrations or that are otherwise unstable
• Near windows or other places exposed to direct sunlight
• Near heaters or other extremely hot places
• Extremely cold places
• Places with bad ventilation or high humidity
• Very dusty locations
Avoid installing this unit on top of any heat-generating electrical device such as a power amplifier.
1–Introduction
Beware of condensation
If the unit is moved from a cold to a warm place, or used after a sudden temperature change, there is a danger of condensation; vapor in the air could condense on the internal mechanism, making correct operation impossible. To prevent this, or if this occurs, let the unit sit for one or two hours at the new room temperature before using.
Cleaning the unit
Use a dry soft cloth to wipe the unit clean. Do not clean the unit with a chemically treated cloth or substances such as benzene, thinner and alcohol because they might cause damage to the surface of the unit.

5 button (F FWD)
Press this button to search forward.
Press briefly to search forward to the end of the current file. Each time you press this button, the search speed increases.
Press and hold to search forward continuously for as long as the button is pressed. When the end of the current file is reached, searching stops there.
6 [ª] button (POWER, STOP)
Use to stop recording and playback, as well as to end recording standby.
Press during playback to pause playback. Press again when paused to stop playback.
Use also to respond “NO” to a confirmation pop-up message that appears during the operation of a setting screen.

Use these to adjust the volume level of the output from the built-in speaker or the /LINE OUT jack. When using these buttons, the volume level is shown in a pop-up at the bottom of the display.

In addition to the MENU button, which opens the

Inserting and removing SD cards
Inserting an SD card
The SD card slot is inside the battery compartment on the bottom of the case. Insert the SD card here.
NOTE
An SD card is already in the unit when it is purchased. You can use this SD card as is for recording and playback. There is no need to reinsert it.
1. Remove the battery compartment cover. If there are batteries in the compartment, confirm that the unit power is OFF and then remove them.

Removing an SD card
Press the inserted SD card in slightly to eject it.
Preparing an SD card for use
To use an SD card with this unit, you must format it by using this unit first.
1. Confirm that an SD card is inserted, and press and hold the [ª] button on the top panel of the unit to turn the power ON.
2. If a new card or a card that was formatted by a different device has been inserted in the unit, the following popup message appears.

CAUTION
Do not remove the SD card from the unit when it is connected to a computer by USB.
SD cards that meet SD/SDHC standards can be used with this unit.
A list of SD cards that have been verified to work with this unit is posted on the TASCAM website (http://www.tascam.
com/).
3. Press the Á button to start formatting.
Remove the SD card if you do not wish to format it.
CAUTION
Formatting will erase all the data on the card.
4. After formatting completes, the Home Screen opens.
You can also reformat a card with this unit at any time.

Special cases
If you insert an SD card that has been formatted by a device other than another LR-10, the
FORMAT ERROR
screen will appear. In this case, format the card to use it with this unit.
SD cards that have been formatted by a TASCAM DR series device, however, are compatible with this model.
• If the system file or another important file has been accidentally erased from the SD card when accessing it from a computer, the following pop-up screen appears.
Card write protection
SD cards have write-protection switches that prevent new data from being written to them.
Unprotected Protected
If you slide the protect switch to the “LOCK” position, file recording and editing will not be possible. Move the switch to the unlocked position in order to record, erase and otherwise edit data on the card.
In this case, press the Á button to format the card again.

Powering the unit
This unit can be powered by two AA batteries, USB bus power or a TASCAM PS-P520 AC adaptor (sold separately).
This unit can use either alkaline or nickel-metal hydride
(NiMH) batteries.
Using AA batteries
As described in the “Inserting and removing SD cards” section above, this unit has a battery compartment in the bottom.
Insert 2 AA batteries into this compartment, aligning them correctly with the plus/minus indications inside, and then close the compartment cover.
When using AA batteries, set the type of battery in order to allow the unit to accurately show the amount of power remaining and determine whether enough power is available for proper operation. (See “Setting the battery type” on page
83.)

CAUTION
Manganese batteries cannot be used with this unit.
This unit cannot recharge Ni-MH batteries. Use a commercially-available recharger.
• The included alkaline batteries are provided for confirming the operation of the unit and might not last very long.
Using USB bus power
Connect the unit with a computer using the included USB cable as shown in the illustration below.

Connect this unit and the computer directly. Operation using a USB hub cannot be assured.

(copy) audio files (WAV or MP3 format) on the computer to the SD card in the unit, as well as erase files and work with folders on the card from the computer.

Connecting an instrument
In addition to the built-in microphone, this unit has a line in jack (stereo mini-jack) on its right side panel to which you can connect the outputs of keyboards and other instruments, as well as audio devices.
Keyboard
The LR-10 drive contains MUSIC and UTILITY folders.
Disconnecting from a computer
After using the correct procedures to dismount the LR-10 drive from your computer, disconnect the USB cable. The unit should automatically turn off.
Please refer to the operation manual for your computer system for instructions about the correct procedures for dismounting an external drive.

NOTE
You can apply the built-in effects to sound input by the connected instrument and play along to a song playing back on the unit or its metronome.
• To use an electric guitar or bass with this unit, connect the instrument first to an effect pedal or other device that has a headphones/line level output.

This unit can record a performance through the built-in mic or from a keyboard or similar instrument that is connected to the
LINE IN jack. The audio file format used for recording is always
44.1 kHz, 16-bit WAV.
In addition, this unit can also mix the input signal and an audio file that is playing back and record both together
(overdubbing).
Setting the location where recorded files are saved
You can set the location where recorded files are saved. (See
“Folder operations” on page 59.)
If you do not set a destination, files will be saved directly in the MUSIC folder.

The PEAK indicator to the right of the display lights red just before the recording level begins to distort. Play the instrument or start playback on the connected device, and input the loudest volume you intend to record. Set the INPUT level as high as possible without making the PEAK indicator light red, and set the INPUT level as high as possible without making the PEAK indicator light red.

In order to hear through headphones the sound that you are recording from the built-in microphones or the line in jack, the mic/line input must be ON ( off ( or

Press and hold the RECORD [º] button to enable the pre-record function and put the unit into recording standby. The RECORD [º] button indicator blinks when in recording standby. (See “Recording a few seconds before pushing the record button (pre-recording)” on page 51.)
2. Press the [ª] button to stop recording.
To pause recording, press the RECORD [º] button. To resume recording to the same file, press the RECORD [º] button again.
Press the [ª] button after pausing to complete the creation of an audio file with the music recorded up to the moment that recording was paused.

Recording a few seconds before pushing the record button (prerecording)
The unit can capture up to 2 seconds of input signal during recording standby, allowing recording to start before the
RECORD [º] button is pushed.
1. Press and hold the RECORD [º] button briefly to start recording standby. The RECORD [º] button indicator blinks, and the PRE ( ) icon appears on the display.
2. Press the RECORD [º] button again briefly to start recording. Input signal is recorded starting up to 2 seconds before the button was pushed.

Recording the input sound with the playback sound (overdubbing)
You can combine the input signal with the signal from an already recorded file being played back to record a new file.
For example, you could record a new instrument part over an existing track.

When overdubbing, You cannot use the auto-record or manual file incrementation functions.
• You cannot pause during overdubbing. (The RECORD [º] button does not respond if pushed.)

Track incrementation
You can start recording to a new file without interruption manually. If a file reaches the maximum size (2GB), the unit will also automatically start recording to a new file. In both cases, the original file is saved and no gap occurs in the recording.
Manual track incrementation during recording
At any time during recording, you can manually start a new file and continue recording easily.

On the Browse Screen, you can view the contents of the
MUSIC Folder, which contains the audio files on the SD card.
On this screen, you can also play and erase selected audio files, create folders, add tracks to the playlist and so on. (See
“Playlist” on page 67.)
TIP
If you connect this unit with a computer by USB or connect the SD card directly with a computer, you can change the folder structure within the MUSIC Folder and erase files in it using the computer. Furthermore, you can change file names from the computer.
To open the
BROWSE
screen, from the Home Screen, press the

BROWSE screen navigation
On the
BROWSE
screen, folders and music files appear in a hierarchical structure much like they would appear on a computer. Folders can only be used to two levels.
• Use the § / BROWSE and ¶/MIC buttons to select files and folders.

SD cards that have been formatted by a TASCAM DR series device can also be used with this unit.
Playback
When the unit is stopped, press the Á button to start playback.

Stopping playback
When the Home Screen is open and a track is playing back, press the [ª] button to stop playback at the current position (pause).

Selecting a file
During playback or when stopped, use the  and ¯ buttons to select a file.
Press the  button to skip to the previous file.
Press the ¯ button to skip to the next file.
Only files in the playback area can be played. (See “Using the
PLAY MODE screen to set the playback area” on page 6.)
The song name, file number and other information for the currently playing file are shown on the display.
The ª icon appears on the display when playback is stopped at the beginning of a track, and the π icon appears when playback is stopped in the middle of a track (paused).

Searching forward and backward
During playback or when stopped (or paused), press and hold the Ô/ button to search backward/forward. Release the button to return to the previous state.
Use the
CUE/REV SPEED
item on the
SETUP
screen to set the search speed. (See “System settings (SETUP)” on page 83.)
Press the Ô/ button briefly to search backward/ forward to the beginning/end of the file.
Press the same button again briefly to change the search speed. The speed options are: x2, x5, x10, x20, x40 and x120.
NOTE
Searching backward/forward continues only until the beginning/end of the current file. Searching will not continue into the previous or next file even if you continue to hold the button.
Adjusting the playback volume
Use the OUTPUT (+/–) buttons to adjust the volume level output from the built-in speaker or the /LINE OUT jack.
While being adjusted, the volume level is shown in a pop-up at the bottom of the display.
NOTE
If you turn the MIC/LINE input off, the playback level returns to its original level.
If the MIC/LINE input is on, and you have used the BALANCE button to lower the volume of the playback (
BALANCE
) to overdub an audio file, when you play back that file, the playback monitoring level will be lower than it was when recording. In this case, use the BALANCE button to set
BALANCE
to its maximum.

Adjusting the balance between playback and input signals
You can adjust the balance between the input sound of an instrument being played and the playback sound of a file.
Use the INPUT volume to adjust the level of the input signal, and press the BALANCE button to open the

When you want to listen to just the playback signal, you can disable the MIC/LINE input to prevent any unwanted noise.

Press the ¶/MIC button again to enable the MIC/LINE input.

If the card contains a large number of files, for example, setting a limited playback area can make file selection easier. On the

Adding files to the playlist
1. On the Home Screen, press the § / BROWSE button to open the

9–Special Playback (playback control function)
Using this unit’s playback control functions, you can change the speed of playback without changing the pitch and vice versa. You can use these playback control functions for effective practice and learning new parts.
Changing the speed
You can use the SPEED function to set the playback speed.
This unit has a Variable Speed Audition (VSA) function, so even when playback speed is changed the pitch stays the same.
Press the SPEED button to show the SPEED setting area at the bottom of the Home Screen.
Changing the key
You can use the KEY function to change the pitch of playback in semitone intervals (and the FINE TUNE function to change it in cents) without changing the speed.
Press the KEY button to show the

In ordinary playback mode, unless you do something to stop it, once playback starts, it will stop only when the end of the last file in the current playback area is reached. By making the settings and conducting the operations described in this chapter, however, you can also make the unit loop a section of a file that you choose, repeat all the files in the current playback area, play a single track repeatedly or play a single track once and stop.
NOTE
A ccurate assignment of IN (starting) and OUT (ending) points is not always possible for variable bit rate (VBR) MP3 files.
The current position is set as the OUT (ending) point, and loop playback between the IN (starting) and OUT (ending) points begins.

Transferring songs to and from a computer
You can transfer audio files from a computer by USB, and play them back for practice, to learn new parts and to overdub.
Moreover, this unit can play back MP3 (32–320 kbps, 44.1 kHz) and WAV (44.1 kHz, 16/24-bit) audio file formats.
NOTE
Instead of using USB to connect this unit and a computer, you can also conduct the same operations by removing the SD card from this unit and connecting it directly to a computer that has a built-in SD card slot or by using a card reader.
Copying audio files from a computer
1. Connect the unit to the computer. (See “Connecting with a computer” on page 46.)
2. Click the LR-10 drive that appears on the computer to
open it, revealing UTILITY and MUSIC folders.
3. Drag-and-drop the desired audio files from the
computer to the MUSIC folder to copy those files to the
SD card.
Preparing audio files on a computer
Use the abilities of your computer OS or a software application to copy music files from a CD or other source to your computer.
When copying files to your computer, choose file types that this unit can handle (the MP3 and WAV files types listed above).

4. After you finish copying files and closing the connection with the unit SD card from the computer, disconnect the USB cable. (Please refer to the operation manual for your computer system for instructions about the correct procedures for dismounting an external drive.)

TIP
You can also manage the contents of the MUSIC folder on an
SD Card from a computer.
You can create up two levels of sub-folders inside the MUSIC folder. Since you can set the unit to only play the contents of a specific folder, you can conveniently organize tracks into musical categories and artists. (See “Folder operations” on page 59.)
Name the sub-folders and music files as you like, and these names will appear on the unit’s display.
Transferring audio files to a computer
1. Click the LR-10 drive that appears on the computer to
open it, revealing UTILITY and MUSIC folders.
2. Open the MUSIC folder, and drag and drop the files that you want to copy to the desired location on the computer.

13–Using the tuner
This unit has a built-in tuner. By inputting the sound of an instrument, you can use the tuning meter on the display to tune that instrument accurately. In addition, you can output a tone for tuning from the built-in speaker or the /LINE OUT jack, which is convenient for tuning multiple instruments simultaneously, for example.
3. The first item shown for each mode is

. Use this to set the frequency of A between 435 Hz and 445 Hz.
Preparation
1. Press the TUNER button to open the TUNER screen.

The FAT formatting of the card is abnormal or broken. This message also appears if you FAT formatted the card using a computer connected by USB and if a new card is inserted in the unit. Always use the LR-10 to conduct
FAT formatting of cards to be used with it. Change the card or press the Á button when this message appears to format the card in FAT format.
