TWO YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY ON TROY BILT HEDGE TRIMMER
For two years from the date of purchase, when this Hedge trimmer is used and maintained according to the operator’s manual, Troy Bilt will repair any defect in material or workmanship free of charge.
This warranty excludes the spark plug and air filter, which are expendable parts that can wear out from normal use in less than two years.
If this Hedge trimmer is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.

This
unit is factory equipped with a spark arrestor. If it requires replacement, ask a Troy Bilt or other qualified service dealer to install the

FUEL SAFETY WARNINGS
WARNING:
Gasoline is highly flammable, and its vapors can explode if ignited. Take the following precautions: WARNING:
When using the unit, you must follow the safety rules. Please read these instructions before operating the unit in order to ensure the safety of the operator and any bystanders.
Please keep these instructions for later use.
• Store fuel only in containers specifically designed and approved for the storage of such material.
• Avoid creating a source of ignition for spilled fuel. Do not start the engine until fuel vapors dissipate.
• Do not operate this unit when tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
• Children must not operate the unit. Teens must be accompanied and guided by an adult.
• All guards and safety attachments must be installed properly before operating the unit.
• Always stop the engine and allow it to cool before filling the fuel tank. Never remove the cap of the fuel tank, or add fuel, when the engine is hot. Never operate the unit without the fuel cap securely in place.
Loosen the fuel tank cap slowly to relieve any pressure in the tank.
• Inspect the unit before use. Replace damaged parts.
Check for fuel leaks. Make sure all fasteners are in place and secure. Replace parts that are cracked, chipped, or damaged in any way. Do not operate the unit with loose or damaged parts.
• Add fuel in a clean, well-ventilated outdoor area where there are no sparks or flames. Slowly remove the fuel cap only after stopping engine. Do not smoke while fueling or mixing fuel. Wipe up any spilled fuel from the unit immediately. Always wipe unit dry before using.
• Move the unit at least 30 feet (9.1 m) from the fueling source and site before starting the engine. Do not smoke. Keep sparks and open flames away from the area while adding fuel or operating the unit.
• Carefully inspect the area before starting the unit.
Remove all debris and hard or sharp objects such as glass, wire, etc.
• Clear the area of children, bystanders, and pets. At a minimum, keep all children, bystanders, and pets outside a 50 feet (15 m.) radius; there still may be a risk to bystanders from thrown objects. Bystanders should be encouraged to wear eye protection. If you are approached, stop the unit immediately.

WEAR CLOSE FITTING, TOUGH WORK CLOTHING that will provide protection, such as long slacks or trousers, safety work shoes, heavy duty work gloves, hard hat, a safety face shield, or safety glasses for eye protection and a good grade of ear plugs or other sound barriers for hearing protection.
2 REFUEL IN A SAFE PLACE. Open fuel cap slowly to release any pressure which may have formed in fuel tank. To prevent a fire hazard, move at least 30 feet
(9.1 meters) from fueling area before starting.
3.
COMPLY WITH ALL FIRE PREVENTION REGULA-
TIONS. COMPLIANCE WITH ALL LOCAL, STATE,
OR FEDERAL LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES IS
THE USER’S RESPONSIBILITY. Your unit comes with a spark arrester screen furnished in the user kit.
Replacement spark arrester screen kits are available at your nearest Troy Bilt Authorized Service Center .

TURN UNIT OFF before setting it down.

ALWAYS HOLD UNIT FIRMLY WITH BOTH HANDS, the thumb and fingers encircling the handles.

KEEP ALL SCREWS AND FASTENERS TIGHT.
Never operate this equipment if it is improperly adjusted or not completely and securely assembled .

KEEP HANDLES DRY, clean and free of fuel mixture.
8.
CHECK AREA YOU WILL BE TRIMMING FOR
DEBRIS that may be struck or thrown during operation.
9.
KEEP ALL PARTS OF YOUR BODY AND CLOTHING
AWAY FROM TRIMMER BLADES when starting or running engine. Before starting engine, make sure trimmer blades will not come in contact with any obstacle.
10. STOP ENGINE before examining trimmer blades.
11. STORE EQUIPMENT AWAY FROM POSSIBLE IGNI-
TION SOURCES, such as gas-powered water heaters, clothes dryers, or oil-fired furnaces, portable heaters, etc.
12. ALWAYS KEEP THE BLADE GUIDES AND BLADES
FREE OF DEBRIS BUILD-UP. Turn ignition switch to
OFF position and remove spark plug boot to avoid any chance of accidental starting before cleaning blades or performing any mainenance.
13. OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT should always be restricted to mature and properly instructed individuals.
WHAT NOT TO DO
1.
DO NOT USE ANY OTHER FUEL than that recommended in your manual. Always follow instructions in the Fuel and Lubrication section of this manual. Never use gasoline unless it is properly mixed with 2-cycle engine lubricant. Permanent damage to engine will result, voiding manufacturer’s warranty.
2.
DO NOT SMOKE while refueling or operating equipment.
3.
DO NOT OPERATE UNIT WITHOUT A MUFFLER and properly installed muffler shield.
4.
DO NOT TOUCH or let your hands or body come in contact with the muffler. Hold unit with thumbs and fingers encircling the handles.
5.
DO NOT OPERATE UNIT IN AWKWARD POSI-
TIONS, off balance, outstretched arms, or one-handed. Always use two hands when operating.

Keep children, other people and pets away from the trimmer.
3.
Always dress properly. Don’t wear loose clothing or jewelry; they can be caught in moving parts. Use of gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when working outdoors. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair.
4.
Use face or dust mask if operation is dusty.
5.
Do not use the trimmer if the cutting device is not secured properly or is damaged.
6.
Before starting the trimmer, make sure that the cutting blade is not touching stones or debris.
7.
When the trimmer is in operation, keep the cutting section away from all parts of the body.
8.
Do not cut against hard objects. This could cause injury or damage the trimmer.
9.
Only cut during broad daylight or with corresponding artificial light.
10. When the trimmer is not in use, store it in a dry place and out of the reach of children.
11. Never use the trimmer when it is raining. Try to prevent it from getting wet or being exposed to humidity. Do not leave it outside overnight. Do not cut damp or wet bushes.
12. Do not attempt to remove cut material or hold material to be cut when blades are moving. Make sure trimmer switch is off when clearing jammed material from blades. Do not grasp the exposed cutting blades or cutting edges when picking up or holding the hedge trimmer.
13. Don’t force hedge trimmer, it will do the job better and with less likelihood of risk of injury at the rate for which it was designed.
14. Stay alert, watch what you are doing. Use common sense. Do not operate hedge trimmer when you are tired.
15. Maintain hedge trimmer with care, keep cutting blades sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the risk of injury. Keep handles dry, clean and free from oil and grease.
SPECIAL NOTE: Exposure to vibrations through prolonged use of gasoline powered hand tools could cause blood vessel or nerve damage in the fingers, hands, and joints of people prone to circulation disorders or abnormal swelling. Prolonged use in cold weather has been linked to blood vessel damage in otherwise healthy people. If symptoms occur such as numbness, pain, loss of strength, change in skin color or texture, or loss of feeling in the fingers, hands or joints, discontinue use of this tool and seek medical attention. An anti-vibration system does not guarantee avoidance of these problems. Users who operate power tools on a regular basis must closely monitor their physical condition and the condition of this tool.

OIL AND FUEL INFORMATION
OIL AND FUEL MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
Old and/or improperly mixed fuel are the main reasons for the unit not running properly. Be sure to use fresh,
(less than 30 days old) clean unleaded fuel. Follow the instructions carefully for the proper fuel/oil mixture.
Definition of Blended Fuels
Today's fuels are often a blend of gasoline and oxygenates such as ethanol, methanol, or MTBE (ether).
Alcohol-blended fuel absorbs water. As little as 1% water in the fuel can make fuel and oil separate and leads to formation of acids during storage. When using alcoholblended fuel, use fresh fuel.
Using Blended Fuels
If you choose to use a blended fuel, or its use is unavoidable, follow recommended precautions:
• Always use the fresh fuel mix explained in your operator's manual
• Always agitate the fuel mix before fueling the unit
• Drain the tank and run the engine dry before storing the unit
Using Fuel Additives
The bottle of 2-cycle oil that came with your unit contains a fuel additive which will help inhibit corrosion and minimize the formation of gum deposits. It is recommended that you use our 2-cycle oil with this unit.
If unavailable, use a good 2-cycle oil designed for air-cooled engines along with a fuel additive, such as
STA-BIL ® Gas Stabilizer or an equivalent. Add 0.8 oz.
(23 ml.) of fuel additive per gallon of fuel according to the instructions on the container. NEVER add fuel additives directly to the unit's fuel tank.
CAUTION:
For proper engine operation and maximum reliability, pay strict attention to the oil and fuel mixing instructions on the
2-cycle oil container. Using improperly mixed fuel can severely damage the engine.
To Obtain Correct Fuel Mix:
Thoroughly mix the proper ratio of 2-cycle engine oil with unleaded gasoline in a separate fuel can. Use a 40:1 fuel/oil ratio. Do not mix them directly in the engine fuel tank. See the table below for specific gas and oil mixing ratios.
NOTE: One gallon (3.8 liters) of unleaded gasoline mixed with one 3.2 oz. (95 ml.) bottle of
2-cycle oil makes a 40:1 fuel/oil ratio.

STARTING/STOPPING INSTRUCTIONS
STARTING A COLD ENGINE (Above 55˚F)
Mix the bottle of
2-cycle oil (included) with 1 gallon of unleaded
gasoline (less than 30 days old). Combine them in a
separate container using a 40:1 ratio. Pour into fuel tank.
1. Move on/off ignition switch to the “RUN (I) ” position.
(Figure 1)
2. Your unit is designed with a 3 position choke: FULL
CHOKE “ ”, PARTIAL CHOKE “ ”, and RUN “ ”.
Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE “ ” position.

3. Prime the carburetor. Pump the primer bulb (A) 10 times (Figure 3).
4. Set throttle advance by squeezing trigger and at the same time depressing throttle lock (B). (Figure 4)
5 . With the unit on the ground, hold the front handle and step on the bottom of the frame with foot. Pull starter rope 3 times. (Figure 5 )
NOTE: The unit uses the Spring Assist TM starting system, which significantly reduces the effort required to start the engine. You must pull the starter rope out far enough to hear the engine attempt to start. There is no need to pull the rope briskly--there is no harsh resistance when pulling. Be aware that this starting method is vastly different from (and much easier than) what you may be used to.
6 . Move choke lever to PARTIAL CHOKE “ ” position then pull starter rope 4 times (Figure 6 ) Engine should start.
7 .
After engine starts move the choke lever to RUN “ ” position. Warm up 30 seconds in idle then depress trigger. (Figure 7 )
8 . If engine fails to start, repeat steps 1 through 6.
NOTE: If engine fails to start after repeated attempts, refer to Troubleshooting section.
NOTE: Always pull starter rope straight out. Pulling starter at an angle will cause rope to rub against the eyelet. This friction will cause the rope to fray and wear more quickly. Always hold starter handle when rope retracts.
Never allow rope to snap back from extended position.
This could cause rope to snag or fray and also damage the starter assembly.

WARM ENGINE START

3. Grasp throttle handle firmly, depress safety trigger, and squeeze throttle trigger to FULL position.
4. Pull starter rope briskly until engine starts, but no more than 6 times. Keep throttle at FULL position until engine runs smoothly. Move choke lever to “ ” position.
5. If engine does not start, place choke lever in RUN “ ” position and pull starter rope 5 more times. If engine still does not start it is probably flooded. Wait 5 minutes and repeat procedure with choke lever in RUN “ ” position and throttle full open.
Normal Stopping Method. For normal stopping, release trigger and allow engine to return to idle speed. Then
DEPRESS the OFF “STOP ” switch until the engine stops completely. (Figure 10 )

IDLING/CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
1. Occassionally, due to atmospheric conditions such as altitude it might be necessary to make slight adjustment to idle speed.
2. Insert phillips or flat screwdriver into access hole A (figure 9 ). Turn 1/8 turn clockwise to increase idle speed and 1/8 turn counterclockwise to decrease idle speed.

• ALWAYS TRIM OR CUT AT HIGH ENGINE SPEEDS.
Do not run engine slowly at start or during trimming operations.
• DO NOT use equipment for purposes other than trimming.
• DO NOT operate unit with other people or animals in the immediate vicinity. Allow a minimum of 50 feet (15 meters) between operator and other people and animals when trimming.
TRIMMING INSTRUCTIONS
1.
WORKING POSITION. Maintain proper footing and balance and do not overreach. Wear safety goggles, non-skid footwear and gloves when trimming. Hold the tool firmly in both hands and turn the tool ON. Always hold the trimmer, as shown in the illustrations, with one hand on the body handle and one hand on the front handle. Never hold the tool by the blade guard.
2.
TRIMMING NEW GROWTH. A wide, sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through the twigs is most effective. A slight downward tilt of the blade, in the direction of motion gives the best cutting. ( Fig. 11 )
3.
LEVEL HEDGES. To obtain exceptionally level hedges, a piece of string can be stretched along the length of the hedge as a guide.
CAUTION: greater than 3/4” . Use the trimmer only for cutting normal shrubbery found around houses and buildings.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

CLEANING TRIMMER BLADES
Trimmer blades should be cleaned periodically to remove sap and accumulated debris.
To Clean Blades:
1. Turn ignition switch to “ STOP” position. Remove spark plug boot.
CAUTION : the blades to the bar. This operation is intended to be performed by a Troy Bilt Authorized
Service Center.
DO NOT loosen the bolts or nuts retaining
2. Wash blades with kerosene. Use a stiff bristle brush to remove dirt, debris or sap that has accumulated on blades.
3. Reinstall spark plug boot.
CAUTION :
DO NOT OIL or lubricate trimmer blades. It is important that blades have complete running freedom.
AIR FILTER
CAUTION: out the air filter. The air filter must be kept clean. If it becomes damaged, install a new filter.
NEVER operate hedge trimmer with-

1. Remove cover (A) by depressing clip on front of cover and lift filter (B) from air box ( Figure 13 & Figure 14 ).

4. The cutting blades are made from high quality, hardened steel and with normal usage, they will not require resharpening. However, if you accidentally hit a wire fence, stones, glass or other hard objects, you may put a nick in the blade. There is no need to remove this nick as long as it does not interfere with the movement of the blade. If it does interfere, use a fine toothed file or sharpening stone to remove the nick.
5. If you drop the trimmer, carefully inspect it for damage.
If the blade is bent, housing cracked, or handles broken or if you see any other condition that may affect the trimmer’s operation contact a professional service center for repairs before putting it back into use.
6. Do not store unit near fertilizers as they contain corosives that may cause the blade to rust more rapidly.

However, if you accidentally hit a wire fence, stones, glass or other hard objects, you may put a nick in the blade. There is no need to remove this nick as long as it does not interfere with the movement of the blade. If it does interfere, use a fine toothed file or sharpening stone to remove the nick.
5. If you drop the trimmer, carefully inspect it for damage.
If the blade is bent, housing cracked, or handles broken or if you see any other condition that may affect the trimmer’s operation contact a professional service center for repairs before putting it back into use.
6. Do not store unit near fertilizers as they contain corosives that may cause the blade to rust more rapidly.

FUEL CAP / FUEL FILTER
CAUTION:
Remove fuel from unit and store in approved container before starting this procedure. Open fuel cap slowly to release any pressure which may have formed in fuel tank.
Fuel Filter:
1. Completely remove fuel cap (A) from fuel tank (B) to be able to remove fuel filter (D) from tank. Use a piece of wire (C) with a hook formed at the end to pull filter out of tank. ( Figure 15 & Figure 16 )
2. Pull filter (D) off with a twisting motion.
3. Replace fuel filter (D). ( Figure 17 )
NOTE: Never operate the hedge trimmer without the fuel filter. Internal engine damage could result!

SPARK PLUG
1. To remove spark plug (B) ( Fig. 19 ) for cleaning or replacement: make sure engine is off, spark plug is cool, then grasp spark plug boot firmly and remove from spark plug. Remove spark plug with correct spark plug tool. Inspect, clean or replace as needed.
2. Spark plug gap = .025" (.635mm) ( Figure 18 ).
3. Torque to 120 inch pounds (12 to 15 N•m). Connect spark plug boot.
4. If needed, replace spark plug with spark plug RDJ7Y or equivalent.

STORING A UNIT
Failure to follow these steps may cause varnish to form in the carburetor and difficult starting or permanent damage following storage.
1. Perform all the general maintenance recommended in the Maintenance Section of your User Manual.
2. Clean outside surface of unit.
3. Drain fuel from the fuel tank.
4. After fuel is drained, start engine.
5. Run engine at idle until unit stops. This will purge the carburetor of fuel.
6. Allow engine to cool (approx. 5 minutes).
7. Using a spark plug wrench, remove the spark plug.
8. Pour 1 teaspoon of clean 2-cycle oil into the combustion chamber. Pull starter rope slowly several times to coat internal components. Replace spark plug.
9. Store unit in a cool, dry place away from any source of ignition such as an oil burner, water heater, etc.
REMOVING A UNIT FROM STORAGE
1. Remove spark plug.
2. Pull starter rope briskly to clear excess oil from combustion chamber.
3. Clean and gap spark plug or install a new spark plug with proper gap.
4. Prepare unit for operation.
5. Fill fuel tank with proper fuel / oil mixture. See Fuel and Lubrication Section.

Your Warranty Rights and Obligations
The California Air Resources Board, The Environmental Protection Agency and Troy Bilt are pleased to explain the emission control system warranty on your 2005 and later small off-road engine. In California and the 49 states, new small off-road engines must be designed, built and equipped to meet stringent anti-smog standards. Troy Bilt must warrant the emission control system on your small off-road engine for the periods of time listed below provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your small off-road engine.
Your Emission control system may include parts such as the carburetor or fuel-injection system, the ignition system, and catalytic converter. Also included may be hoses, belts, connectors and other emission-related assemblies.
Where a warrantable condition exists, Troy Bilt will repair your small off-road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts and labor.
The 2005 and later small off-road engines are warranted for two years. If any emission-related part on your engine is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by Troy Bilt.
Owner’s Warranty Responsibilities
• As the small off-road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in your operator’s manual. Troy Bilt recommends that you retain all receipts covering maintenance on your small off-road engine, but Troy Bilt cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance.
• As the small off-road engine owner, you should however be aware that Troy Bilt may deny you warranty coverage if your small off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unapproved modifications.
• You are responsible for presenting your small off-road engine to a Troy Bilt authorized service center as soon as problem exists. The warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days.

Manufacturer’s Warranty Coverage
• The warranty period begins on the date the engine or equipment is delivered to the retail purchaser.

LLC with respect to new merchandise purc hased and used in the United States, its possessions and territories.
Troy-Bilt LLC warrants this product against defects in material and workmanship for a period of two (2) years commencing on the date of original purchase and will, at its option, repair or replace, free of charge, any part found to be defective in material or workmanship.
