The aim of Certificate in Contemporary Music Performance is to
The aim of Certificate in Contemporary Music
Performance is to prepare you to gig in the
contemporary music industry, and also for
higher level study (e.g. entry into the Bachelor
of Musical Arts).
Through the year, you will develop your music
performance and production skills, your ability
to work in a team, and also your study skills.
You will contribute to writing original songs
while studying various genres such as Blues,
Reggae, Ska, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, R’n’B, Pop,
Rock and Contemporary.
Additionally you will have one-to-one lessons
on your instrument e.g. drums, guitar, voice,
bass, keys, EMP, or wind instrument.
PROGRAMME INFORMATION
MUS401 Applied Music
Learn the fundamentals of music theory including reading
music, listening analysis and knowing your scales. We apply
the concepts on keyboards in class as well as on your chosen
instrument in one-one lessons.
MUS402 Applied Music 2
Develop your music theory knowledge including music
notation, modes and scales, harmony, melody and rhythm,
sight reading, listening analysis and notation skills. We apply
the concepts on keyboards in class as well as on your chosen
instrument in one-one lessons.
MUS403 Contemporary Music in Context
Develop an understanding of an array of historical music
genres, and study the historical and technological influences
on these in the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
MUS404 Performance 1
Develop essential band performance skills, as well as practise
and rehearsal skills. Prepare for and perform a series of
concerts covering a range of contemporary music genres.
MUS405 Performance 2
Develop your stagecraft skills, as well as practise and
rehearsal skills. Prepare for and perform a series of concerts
covering a range of contemporary music genres.
EMP403 Electronic Music Production
Learn to use technology in recording and live sound
production using digital audio workstations (DAW). Work
with sound equipment in studio and live performance
environments.
MUS406 Contemporary Music Writing
Creatively apply your music theory knowledge and
performance skills in song writing tasks to help write your
own material… or be an effective collaborator.
MUS407 Music Industry Studies
Gain essential knowledge for working in the music
industry, including basic business skills and an
understanding of copyright so you can
earn royalties!
