INTRODUCTION
The Scanline high-speed option is used by districts/charter schools that use
preprinted answer forms. The student name and their unique ID in addition to the
test ID number may be entered manually on these forms. Galileo K-12 Online
Scanline technology eliminates errors associated with manual data entry by
preslugging the preprinted forms. Scanline simplifies the preslugging task by using
test scheduling information to identify the students to be assessed in a given school
or class. In order to implement preslugging, the Scanline user simply identifies the
school or class to which the students to be assessed are assigned. The user then
hits the start button on the printer and preslugged answer forms are produced for
each test to be administered.
Preslugged Answer Sheet Example
Since the answer sheets contains the student identification information, to scan the
sheets the user must simply places the sheets onto the Galileo-supported scanner
and presses the start button on the scanner. When the sheets are scanned, Galileo
K-12 Online “knows” what test has been taken, what students have taken the test,
what classes they are in, etc. Scoring occurs automatically for multiple choice and
true/false items. However, manual scoring is also available and can be used in
combination with automated scoring.
A district/charter school must purchase Scanline from ATI. There should
be a Scanline purchase for each Galileo-supported scanning unit.
Administering offline tests is a simple process:
1. Prepare test. This includes printing a test booklet for each student and
scheduling the test.
2. Prepare the answer sheets.
3. Administer student tests.
4. Scan tests for automatic scoring and immediate reporting.
TECHNOLOGY
The Scanline high-speed option is used by districts/charter schools that use the
Scanton scanners onsite to scan test results into Galileo. These scanners are

compatible with the Scantron/NCS Blue 100 Answer Form 219482 and/or the
Scantron/NCS Orange 350 Answer Form 224944 propriety forms.
The high-speed scanning units must be connected to a computer with a supported
Windows operating system and has Internet access. Only the scanning operation
and Scanline application require the computer; other Galileo K-12 applications are
compatible with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems. Refer to ATI’s
System Requirements/Security page (http://ationline.com/galileoK12/K12TrainingSystem.php) for supported operating systems,
scanners, and forms.
Please note, only programs that have the Scanline component of Galileo Online
testing will scan tests into Galileo to be automatically scored.

KINDERGARTEN FLIPBOOK ASSESSMENTS
Kindergarten flipbook assessments are handled a little differently than other
grades. Kindergarten teachers receive a test booklet, but instead of receiving a test
booklet for each of their students, they receive one test booklet for their class.
Additionally, instead of generating answer sheets for students, grading sheets are
generated. The teacher, not the student, will be marking the grading sheet. The
high-speed version of Scanline does not support the printing of grading sheets. If
you want to generate grading sheets for scanning, you must use the plain-paper
Scanline.

Refer to the System Requirements/Security page for GradeCam requirements.

Galileo® K-12 Online
The high-speed version of Scanline does not support the printing of
grading sheets.
Refer to the “Scanline Plain-Paper” manual or the “Kindergarten
Assessments” document for details.
Galileo provides users with the ability to enter the score test items manually on the
Score Test page. Teachers may utilize this page when an answer sheet could not
be scanned and/or not generated for the student but the student took the test.
OVERVIEW OF THE STEPS
1. The scanner is hooked to the computer and the Scanline application is
downloaded onto the computer you will be using to scan the answer sheets.
The Scanline installation directions are found in the Installation section, page
8.
Districts/charter schools are responsible for outfitting each Scanline station
with a Scantron Galileo-supported unit in sufficient quantity to meet their
scanning needs. A minimum of one unit per scanning location is
recommended.
2. Tests are printed directly from Galileo. The test must have a User-defined
ID number. This number can be manually entered or auto-generated. This
designation is automatically made for benchmark tests and also when the
previous Test Builder tool is utilized.
3. Propriety answer sheets are ordered separately and are preslugged using the
Scanline Preslugger tool. Instead of preslugging using the Scanline
Preslugger tool, the teacher and/or student may manually enter the student

name, student ID, and test ID number on these forms. The preslugging
direction is found in the Printing section, page 17.
4. Paper and pencil assessments are administered according to district/charter
school protocol.
Information on ATI’s recommended test security protocols as well as a
discussion of how to develop test security protocols specific to your
district/charter school, please refer to the Developing District Test Security
Protocols white paper found in the Publications section of ATI’s web page,
www.ati-online.com.

Page 6
Galileo® K-12 Online
The Offline Test Administration Manual for District-Wide Assessment
document located within Galileo provides the Galileo test administrator with
ATI’s guidelines for administering a benchmark assessment.
5. Collect completed offline tests and answer sheets.
6. Teachers generally go through the answer sheets to make sure:

Students have clearly bubbled-in answers.

Students have not written on barcodes or mutilated tests.

Answer sheets are all facing the same direction.
7. Scan completed answer sheets into the computer with Scanline. Scanning
directions can be found in the Scanning Answer Sheets section, page 32.

The sheets are placed in the automatic document feeder; for most models
the paper is placed face up with the test key feeding first into the
scanner.
8. Reports based on raw scores are available immediately in Galileo once the
bubble sheets are scanned. Reports based on Developmental Level (DL)
scores are available once an Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis is
performed by ATI.
IRT analysis is automatically calculated for core subjects
(e.g., ELA, math, science) for districts/charter schools
based on Arizona. These districts/charter schools do not
need to contact ATI for IRT analysis to be generated.
Districts/charter schools outside of Arizona, or Arizona
districts/charter schools testing in non-core subject areas
(e.g., music, social studies) must contact ATI for IRT to
be generated.

ANSWER SHEETS
The Scantron/NCS propriety answer sheets can be preslugged from the Scanline
Preslugger to automatically include the name of each student and their class along
with a unique student/class identification bar code. By minimizing data entry and
data duplication errors, the automatic printing of this information helps to ensure a
high level of quality control.
High-speed Scanline does not support the printing and/or scanning of
answer bubble (answer) sheets and worksheets. These are items
supported by plain-paper Scanline; please refer to the “Scanline PlainPaper” manual for further details.
USING THE PRESLUGGER
When using the high-speed version of Scanline, you will want to preslug the answer
sheets from using the Scanline Preslugger tool.

SCHEDULE
Bulk schedule a test, or multiple tests, as you normally would in Galileo Online.
Using the Scanline Preslugger, you can choose multiple scheduled tests to preslug
all of the answer sheets in a batch, so it’s best to schedule all the tests you intend
to preslug answer sheets for at once.
The bulk scheduling instruction is in the “Galileo Administrator
Guide” manual and in the online help files. Instructions for
scheduling from the Teacher Dashboard page are found in the
online help files.
TEST IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Please note, before preslugging confirm with your ATI Educational Management
Services (EMS) Coordinator (800.367.4762) that your benchmark test(s), or the
user who created the assessments, has all been given test identification numbers.
Before preslugging a user-created test that was created using Galileo’s previous
version of the Test Builder tool, confirm with the user that they designated a test
identification number.
PRESLUG TIPS
To ensure that the Galileo-supported high-speed paper scanner reads the answer
sheets correctly, it is important that you following these preslugging tips.

It is important that the class roster is updated before answer sheets are
preslugged. This is because the answer sheets automatically include the
name of each student and their class along with a unique student/class
identification bar code.
Roster may be accessed from the Teacher Dashboard
page and from the Student Demographics page.

answer sheets you are using. The Scantron/NCS answer sheets are not standard
between the blue and the orange, and if you are using both kinds of sheets, you will
have to align the printer for each one. However, as long as you use the same
printer, the alignment should remain the same, and the Preslugger will retain the
alignment settings for subsequent batch printing. The first time, choose the range
to only print one, print it with the default settings, and check how close the

1. Click the Printer Alignment… button.
2. You will have to adjust the up-down and left-right alignment as needed.
(Negative numbers move it up and left, positive down and right.) The
numbers you see in the below example are NOT settings you should copy, as
it will vary by printer. However, as a frame of reference, 17-18 is
approximately one vertical printed line’s or one horizontal character’s worth
of change. Continue to print single-page samples until the alignment is
optimal. Those alignment settings will be saved and will not have to be reset
unless you change answer sheet types or printers..
3. Click the OK button.

SCANNING ANSWER SHEETS
Once students have taken an offline test, those test propriety answer sheets may
be scanned into Galileo. Once tests are scanned into Galileo, Galileo will
automatically score the multiple choice, true/false and yes/no items.
The first steps to using Scanline is to make sure that the Galileo-supported scanner
is hooked to the computer and the Scanline application is downloaded onto the
computer you will be using to scan tests. If Scanline is not on the computer,
contact an administrator as only District- and School-level users may download the
Scanline application. (Installation directions are found in the Installation section,
page 8.)
Typically, teachers:
1. Collect completed offline tests and answer sheets.
2. Go through the answer sheets to make sure:

Students have bubbled-in answers clearly.

Students have not written on barcodes or mutilated tests.

Answer sheets are all facing the same direction.
3. Scan completed answer sheets into the computer with Scanline.

The sheets are placed in the automatic document feeder.

The answer sheets are all facing the same direction; for most models the
paper is placed face up. The test key feeds first into the scanner.
4. Reports based on raw scores are available immediately in Galileo once the
bubble sheets are scanned. Reports based on Developmental Level (DL)

scores are available once an Item Response Theory (IRT) analysis is
performed by ATI.
IRT analysis is automatically calculated for core subjects
(e.g., ELA, math, science) for districts/charter schools
based on Arizona. These districts/charter schools do not
need to contact ATI for IRT analysis to be generated.
Districts/charter schools outside of Arizona, or Arizona
districts/charter schools testing in non-core subject areas
(e.g., music, social studies) must contact ATI for IRT to
be generated.
