Product Overview
The Otis Instruments, Inc. Model OI-715 Single-Channel Rack Mount Monitor is specifically designed to monitor and display a 4 to 20mA signal transmitted from a sensor/amplifier assembly. The device is able to detect toxic combustible gases and oxygen levels in ambient airs, and activate alarms for the safety of operating personnel.
The device was designed with several unique features to meet the needs of various applications. Each
OI-715 provides three alarm levels that, when activated, are indicated by Front Panel LEDs. Each alarm level is independent, may be adjusted full-scale, and can be set to either latching or non-latching.
In addition, each alarm can be tested individually or collectively using the Front Panel Alarm
Reset/Test button.
The OI-715 incorporates a model-specific relay board containing six 20 Amp fused relays that can be wired normally open or normally closed. The device can be powered by an AC or DC power source and is housed in a standard 19-inch rack for up to 16 controllers. For smaller systems, an 8-inch rack is used, and/or multiple controllers can be wired together.
The OI-715 provides maximum system flexibility, reliability, and ease of use and maintenance.

Introduction
This document is an Operation Manual containing diagrams and step-by-step instruction for proper operation of the Otis Instruments, Inc. OI-715 Rack Mount Controller. This document should be read before initial operation of the product.
Should a question arise during the use of the product, this document will serve as a first reference for consultation. If further questions arise, or if the device is not working properly, please contact the sales representative of this product.

Warnings
To ensure personal safety, make certain that no power sources are connected to any part of the system while wiring the device or during any part of the startup process.

System Configurations
The OI-715 is delivered fully-assembled with the control cards placed on the Control Panel and the
Back Panel. Depending on the needs of the user, there are several ways to configure the system. This section of the Operation Manual is intended to provide the user with the knowledge necessary to configure the device to their specific needs.
To ensure personal safety and full-functionality of the device, the following System Configurations—
System Connection, Fault Alarm Connection, and Amplifier Sensor Connection—should be completed before initial operation of the product.
NOTE: Make certain that no power sources are connected to the system during startup.
Refrain from connecting a power source to the device until the following System
Configuration instructions affirm that is it safe to do so.

System Connection
1. Make certain that the Control Panel is firmly connected to the Back Panel (directly or via the extension card).
2. Plug the gray ribbon cable into either of the alarm connection ports on the Back Plane.

3. Plug the other end of the gray ribbon cable into the alarm connection port on the Relay
Board.
NOTE: When using multiple OI-715 racks that are stacked vertically, the user may choose to “daisy-chain” the Back Panels together with ribbon cables and then connect the Back
Panel of (only) the last rack to the Relay Board.

Fault Alarm Connection
1. Connect the desired fault alarm to the fault terminal on the Back Panel.
NOTE: The fault terminal output is generally DC 12 to 24V (depending on the input).

Amplifier Sensor Connection
It is imperative that the amplifier is correctly wired to the Back Panel. The sensor amplifier connector terminals on the Back Panel are clearly marked with a channel number that corresponds to the control card in front of it.
NOTE: Once the amplifier has been wired to the Back Panel it is safe to wire the sensor to the Amplifier Card.
1. Locate the three cables that extend from the input terminal on the Back Panel of the Amplifier

2. Connect each of the three cables from the sensor's Amplifier Card to the corresponding sensor amplifier connector terminal on the Back Panel as follows:
Red wire to power “PWR”
Black wire to ground “GND”
Green wire to signal “SIG”

Oxygen Jumper Connection
The oxygen jumper has been provided for users needing electrochemical sensors that monitor oxygen levels. Due to the EC sensor's inability to solitarily produce enough current, an electrochemical sensor jumper must be used in conjunction with any EC sensor (and the oxygen jumper).
The oxygen jumper is to be used in conditions where oxygen levels may fall below a point that is safe for technicians in the area. An oxygen jumper is used in conjunction with the Low Level Alarm, which may be set to any level desired by the user. The High Level and Danger Level Alarms may be set to any level to notify the user when oxygen levels have exceeded safe conditions.
1. Locate the oxygen jumper connection on the Control Panel.

2. Insert an oxygen jumper into the oxygen jumper connection.
NOTE: Use of an oxygen jumper (and EC sensor) requires an EC sensor jumper. Refer to the following section of this Operation Manual for instructions on how to install an EC sensor jumper.

Electrochemical Sensor Jumper Connection
An electrochemical sensor jumper has been provided for users who will be utilizing an EC sensor. Due to the EC sensor's inability to solitarily produce enough current, an electrochemical sensor jumper must be used in conjunction with any EC sensor.
An EC sensor will detect various gases. Take note that the use of an oxygen jumper requires an EC sensor, and therefore, the use of an electrochemical sensor jumper.
1. Locate the electrochemical sensor jumper connection on the Control Panel.
2. Insert an electrochemical sensor jumper into the electrochemical sensor jumper connection.

Power Source Wiring Configurations
The versatility of the OI-715 allows for various powering options, including the ability to use a jumper to supply power from the Relay Board to the Back Panel (or vise versa). Due to the numerous options, this Operation Manual will only cover the basic foundations for powering the system. When choosing a power source, take note of the following critical details:
The Back Panel requires power
The Relay Board requires power
DC inputs require 12-24V
AC inputs require 12-18V
AC power sources have no polarity
DC power must be connected accordingly:
“+” wire to “+” terminal
“-” wire to “-” terminal
AC Power
The OI-715 has an AC power rating of 12-18V input. The components most directly involved with powering the OI-715 as AC are:

1. Connect the AC power source hot (HOT) line to the fuse terminal.
2. Connect the AC power source neutral (NEU) line to the Terminal Array.

4. Connect the SPST switch to the Transformer's “primary side”.
5. Connect the neutral (NEU) terminal to the Transformer's “primary side”.

Alarm System Power (AC)
NOTE: The following set of instructions must be completed for each AC Alarm Device that will be used in conjunction with the OI-715.
1. Locate the alarm connection terminal banks (“A” and “B”) on the Relay Board.
2. Decide which alarm connection terminal bank will be used.
3. Decide and locate the alarm connection terminal that the Alarm Device will be wired to.

4. Connect the AC Power Source hot (HOT) line to the common (COM) alarm connection terminal.
5. Connect the AC Power Source neutral (NEU) line to the neutral (NEU) line on the Alarm
Device.
6. Connect the Alarm Device hot (HOT) line to the normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) alarm connection terminal on the Relay Board.

DC Power
The OI-715 has an DC power rating of 12-24V input. The components most directly involved with powering the OI-715 as DC are:

2. Connect the DC power ground (GND) line on the Terminal Array to the DC power terminal labeled “GND” on the Relay Board.

NOTE: An AC powered system with DC back-up power is a combination of the AC System
Power and DC System Power Wiring Configurations, with wires going into the corresponding power terminals.

Alarm System Power (DC)
NOTE: The following set of instructions must be completed for each DC Alarm Device that will be used in conjunction with the OI-715.
1. Locate the alarm connection terminal banks (“A” and “B”) on the Relay Board.
2. Decide which alarm connection terminal bank will be used.
3. Decide and locate the alarm connection terminal that the Alarm Device will be wired to.

4. Connect the DC Power Source positive (++) line to the common (COM) alarm connection terminal.
5. Connect the DC Power Source ground (GND) line to the ground (GND) line on the Alarm
Device.
6. Connect the Alarm Device positive (++) line to the normally open (NO) or normally closed
(NC) alarm connection terminal on the Relay Board.

Power On
Powering on the device activates its functions. When powered on, the device is fully functional; the relays are inhibited and access to system and settings menus is allowed.
1. Verify that the device is wired according to the System Configurations in this manual (see page
12).
2. Once the wiring configurations have been completed, the device will power on.
3. When powered on, the display screen and the green Monitor LED on the Front Panel will illuminate.
4. The device will count down from 25 to 0.

5. When “0” is show on the display screen, the device is signifying that:
a radio signal is being received there is no gas present

6. Reattach the thumb screws on the Front Panel.
7. Close the enclosure box.
8. The device is now in fully operational and in Normal Operating Mode.
NOTE: The device's power may be controlled by the SPST switch that its power source was wired to using the Power Source Wiring Configurations of this Operation Manual.

Power Off
Powering off the device shuts down the system. When powered off, the device will no longer receive radio transmissions from the sensors.
The device itself does not have the ability to be turned off.
NOTE: The device's power may be controlled by the SPST switch that its power source was wired to using the Power Source Wiring Configurations of this Operation Manual.

Setting Memory Default
This feature allows the user to: set alarms (Low, High and Danger), choose which alarm bank (“A” or
“B”) will be consulted, and choose whether each relay will be latching or unlatching.
Complete all eight sections of the following set of instructions before moving to the next section of this
Operation Manual.
Low Alarm Setting
1. Open the enclosure box.
2. Unscrew the two thumb screws on the Front Panel.

3. Using the thumb and forefinger, slide the Front Panel out of the enclosure.
NOTE: Do not use any metal object to slide the Front Panel out of the enclosure.
4. Locate Calibrate on the Front Panel.
5. Press Calibrate once to disable the alarm relays.
6. The Calibrate/Inhibit LED will begin to blink.
7. Press Calibrate again to enable setting the Low Alarm.
8. The Low Alarm LED will illuminate and the display screen will show the current setting of the
Low Alarm.

9. Locate ADD and SUB on the Control Panel.
10. Press ADD (increase) or SUB (decrease) to manipulate the Low Alarm setting.
11. Once the Low Alarm is set, proceed to the next step.

High Alarm Setting
1. After the Low Alarm has been set (see above), press Calibrate once.
2. The High Alarm LED will illuminate and the display screen will show the current setting of the
High Alarm.
3. Press ADD (increase) or SUB (decrease) to manipulate the High Alarm setting.
4. Once the High Alarm is set, proceed to the next step.
Danger Alarm Setting
1. After the High Alarm has been set (see above), press Calibrate once.
2. The Danger Alarm LED will illuminate and the display screen will show the current setting of the Danger Alarm.
3. Press ADD (increase) or SUB (decrease) to manipulate the Danger Alarm setting.
4. Once the Danger Alarm is set, press Calibrate once to return to Normal Operating Mode.
NOTE: When in Normal Operating Mode, the green Monitor LED will be illuminated.
5. The display screen will show the current PPM level(s) of the monitored gas(es).
NOTE: Activated alarms will remain activated until “Alarm Reset” is pressed.
Alarm Setting (Control Card)
Alarms can also be set on the Control Panel. To set alarms on the Control Panel, the Extender Card will need to be placed between the back of the Control Panel and the Back Plane, extending the Control
Panel out of the Rack Mount.

Alarm Bank Selection
By using the dip-switches on the Control Panel, the user can set the device to monitor the alarms on either terminal bank (“A” or “B”). The user can also use the dip-switches to choose whether the terminal bank's alarms (Low, High and Danger) are latched or unlatched.
NOTE: Unlatched relays will activate alarms when the alarm conditions are met, but will reset when alarm conditions are no longer present.
1. Locate the dip-switches on the Control Panel.

2. Locate the alarm bank (A/B) dip-switch (on the Control Panel).
3. To select bank “A”, move the alarm bank dip-switch to the left. To select bank “B”, move the alarm bank dip-switch to the right.
4. Once the Alarm Bank is selected, proceed to the next step.
Low Alarm Latch Setting
1. After the Alarm Bank has been selected (see above), locate the low alarm dip-switch on the
Control Panel.
2. Move the low alarm dip-switch to the left for latched (right for unlatched).
3. Once the Low Alarm is set, proceed to the next step.

High Alarm Latch Setting
1. After the Low Alarm has been set (see above), locate the high alarm dip-switch on the Control
Panel.
2. Move the high alarm dip-switch to the left for latched (right for unlatched).
3. Once the High Alarm is set, proceed to the next step.
Danger Alarm Latch Setting
1. After the High Alarm has been set (see above), locate the danger alarm dip-switch on the
Control Panel.
2. Move the danger alarm dip-switch to the left for latched (right for unlatched).
3. Once the Danger Alarm is set, slide the Front Panel back inside the enclosure.
4. Reattach the thumb screws on the Front Panel.
5. Close the enclosure box.

Alarm Reset
In the event that the OI-715 detects gas at Low, High or Danger levels, the corresponding alarms and alarm LEDs will activate. The following instructions allow the user to reset the alarms once the gas level has been addressed.
1. Open the enclosure box.
2. Locate the Alarm Reset/Test on the Front Panel.
3. Press Alarm Reset/Test once to reset the activated Front Panel LEDs and alarm relays.
4. Close the enclosure box.

Alarm Tests
This feature should be used to test that all relays/alarms and their corresponding LEDs are fully functional.
Take note that running Alarm Tests WILL activate the operational safety systems that are attached to the alarm relays. Running Alarm Tests will not reset alarm LEDs or alarm relays.
1. Open the enclosure box.
2. Locate Alarm Reset/Test on the Front Panel.
3. Press and hold Alarm Reset/Test for approximately eight seconds to activate the Low Alarm
LED.

4. Press and hold (or continue holding) Alarm Reset/Test for an additional eight seconds to activate the High Alarm LED.
5. Press and hold (or continue holding) Alarm Reset/Test for an additional eight seconds to activate the Danger Alarm LED.
6. Release Alarm Reset/Test.
7. Press Alarm Reset/Test once to return to Normal Operating Mode.
8. Close the enclosure box.

Hardware
Otis Instruments, Inc. (Manufacturer) warrants its products to be free of defects in workmanship and materials—under normal use and service—from the date of purchase from the manufacturer or from the product's authorized reseller. The hardware for this device is under a one-year limited warranty.
The manufacturer is not liable (under this warranty) if its testing and examination disclose that the alleged defect in the product does not exist or was caused by the purchaser's (or any third party's) misuse, neglect, or improper installation, testing or calibrations. Any unauthorized attempt to repair or modify the product, or any other cause of damage beyond the range of the intended use, including damage by fire, lightening, water damage or other hazard, voids liability of the manufacturer.
In the event that a product should fail to perform up manufacturer specifications during the applicable warranty period, contact the product's authorized reseller or return the product directly to the manufacturer with a Return Material Authorization (RMA).
