Because it is a free, open source program it can be installed on any machine without needing to worry about license agreements. To use the full power of R, one writes a series of commands telling R what to do. These can either be one at a time or as a set of commands in a text file. For example, to load in a file of results, pick out the results from particular days, get a random subset of a million of the samples, then do a scatter plot of two variables in these million observations, you might write the instructions: > mydata <- read.csv(“results.txt”) > mysubset <- subset(mydata, mydata$days==16 | mydata$days==18 | mydata$days==20 | mydata$days==22 | mydata$days==24 | mydata$days==26 | mydata$days==28) > myrandommillionsubsample <- mysubset[sample(1:dim(mysubset)[1], size=1000000, replace=FALSE),] > qplot(myrandommillionsubsample$green, myrandommillionsubsample$red, shape = myrandommillionsubsam ple$substance, method = ‘lm’, colour = myrandommillionsubsample$substance) R (continued) However, when coming to grips with R, some people prefer to use GUI with windows and menu commands. This is similar to getting the full power of SPSS by typing your own commands, or using what is available via the menu options. In R, a GUI called R Commander gives easy access to most of the R commands. Because it is open source, interested people can develop it in a number of different ways, one of which is the version Red-R. In Red-R, you clip together the steps you want to perform on the data as a flowchart, which you can save for future use. If you would like to find out more about how R works you should book a place on the session later this month R - Statistics Overview Tuesday 21 February 9 am - 11 am IT TRAINING COURSES COMING UP IN FEBRUARY 2012 PC, Word Processing, Graphics and DTP, Database, Email/Communication and Teaching Tools courses ...
