Overview

Running the firmware utility tool requires setting up a special connection on the VideoRAID

(See “Connecting the VideoRAID” on page 4

), checking the configuration on your

VideoRAID via HyperTerminal (See “Accessing the VideoRAID Using HyperTerminal” on page 6

) and then running the firmware upgrade on each of your media drives (see

“Performing a Firmware Update” on page 8 ).

Avid Firmware Update Utility Requirements

The Avid Firmware update utility is now supported on the Windows Vista

® and

Windows

®

XP workstations. You can access the VideoRAID Firmware Update Utility on the

Avid download center. Visit www.avid.com

.

The Avid Firmware update utility has been used on the HP

®

xw8000 series workstations running on Windows XP Professional with service pack 2 and Windows Vista. Although other Windows computers might be able to perform the firmware update, Avid has not qualified the utility on any other Windows platform or operating system.

n

When using the ATTO UL4D on HP xw8000 series workstation, use driver version 3.0.8 or later.

The firmware update utility is only available for use with Windows operating systems. A similar utility for the Macintosh

operating systems has not been released. If you use the

VideoRAID arrays on a Macintosh computer, you must connect your VideoRAID arrays to a

PC to perform this upgrade. When you have updated the firmware on the VideoRAID, disconnect the chassis from the workstation and reconnect to your Macintosh workstation.

Firmware Utility

This document describes how to update the firmware in your Avid VideoRAID disk arrays using v2.0 of the AvidUtil Windows updating tool. The details of AvidUtil v2.0 are as follows:

• Firmware Release: 320_02_40_x00 dated 02/29/08

• Filename: rtr320_02_40_x00.mot

• File Size: 1.72MB

n

Updating the Firmware on the Avid VideoRAID disk arrays does not corrupt any data already on your dives.

As future firmware updates are available, this information might no longer be valid but the

utility and the procedure does not change, see “Performing a Firmware Update” on page 8

.

Changes from RTR320_02_38_05 to RTR320_02_40_x00

This utility can be used for future firmware releases, but the following details list the changes in version RTR320_02_40_x00 (rtr320_02_40.mot):

• Added support for the driver version SCSI HBA driver, version PC 3.08

• Increased the maximum I/O size from 2MB to 8MB

• Added support for Windows Vista

®

Connecting the VideoRAID

You must connect the SCSI cable to the HP system and terminate the other SCSI port on the

VideoRAID in order to use HyperTerminal. You also need to connect the null modem cable that is included with VideoRAID kit to the serial port. For detail of these connections, see the Avid VideoRAID Setup and User’s Guide.

To connect the SCSI cable, terminator, and null modem cables to your VideoRAID:

1. Make sure the power is off on both the Avid system and VideoRAID array.

2. Locate the null modem (serial) cable that shipped with your VideoRAID kit.

3. Attach one end of the null modem cable to the serial connector on the VideoRAID.

4. Attach the other end of the null modem cable to the serial COM port on your

Windows-based Avid editing system.

5. Secure both cable connectors with the thumbscrews on the connector.

6. Locate an Ultra320 SCSI cable (Avid part number 0070-03158-xx).

7. Attach one end of the SCSI cable to the SCSI connector on the Avid system. Secure the cable connector with the thumbscrews on the connector.

n

You might need the workstation documentation that came with your Avid system to help locate the appropriate SCSI connector on the system.

8. Attach the other end of the SCSI cable to the left SCSI connector on the rear of the array. The connectors are labeled.

9. Secure the cable connector with the thumbscrews on the connector.

10. Attach the SCSI terminator to the right SCSI connector on the rear of the array. Secure the terminator to the connector with the thumbscrews on the terminator.

5

Accessing the VideoRAID Using HyperTerminal

You can now access the VideoRAID configuration settings using HyperTerminal through the serial connector. Each VideoRAID is configured using the serial connection on that channel.

The VideoRAID RTR320X needs to be configured for each RAID set.

To access your VideoRAID using HyperTerminal:

1. Connect the serial COM port on your workstation to the serial connector on the

VideoRAID power supply using the serial null modem cable provided with your

VideoRAID, if you have not done so.

2. Make sure your VideoRAID and workstation are powered on.

3. From a Windows system, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications >

HyperTerminal.

4. Type a name for the connection, select the COM port, and configure the connection using the following serial protocol:

Baud Rate — 57600

Data Bits — 8

Parity — None

Stop Bits — 1

Flow Control — None

6

Accessing the VideoRAID Using HyperTerminal

5. After the VideoRAID completes its startup, the following window opens in your

HyperTerminal window. Note the current Firmware Version number in the display.

n

After the firmware update, the Firmware version number displays the version you have installed. This is not the firmware version number of the individual drives.

6. Press any key to display the Main Menu.

Proceed to “Performing a Firmware Update” on page 8 .

7

Performing a Firmware Update

After downloading the Avid Firmware Utility to your local Windows system, use the following procedure to perform the update. This procedure updates the firmware on the controller and the arrays. The firmware utility downloads and updates the firmware using the

SCSI bus. n

Updating the Firmware on the Avid VideoRAID disk arrays does not corrupt any data already on your dives.

To update the controller firmware on the arrays:

1. Create a new folder and copy the utility (AvidUtil.exe) and firmware (*.mot) files into a single folder on the Windows computer in which the VideoRAID disk arrays are connected.

2. Exit all applications before starting the firmware upgrade.

3. Double click the “AvidUtil.exe” file in the folder you created.

The firmware utility splash screen appears.

8

4. Click the Start button if the arrays do not display immediately.

The arrays connected to your local system appear in the list.

Only one array can be updated at a time.

6. Click the Browse button and select the firmware file you copied to your folder on your computer (for example, rtr320_02_40_x00.mot).

7. Click the Update Firmware button.

The following dialog box displays: c

You have not completed the firmware upgrade when this dialog box appears. This dialog box only informs you that the firmware code has been copied from the computer to the Avid VideoRAID. The firmware update automatically starts after the download has occurred but you must allow time for the update to complete.

8. Wait 2 minutes after the download is complete before accessing the array with the host.

The drive LEDs on the rear all turn red and return to green as it resets itself after the update.

9

9. Click OK and do one of the following: t Close all the open dialog boxes and windows.

t Go back to the list of arrays and select another array you want to update.

10. After updating all arrays, reconfigure for Windows or Macintosh, see
